Eric Schmidt has a White Moto X Already, Yes He Does

eric schmidt moto x

So Eric Schmidt is hanging out in Sun Valley this week at the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference with all sorts of tech moguls and other influential billionaire types. While we normally wouldn’t care about a billionaire boondoggle at a resort, we started caring the minute Schmidt pulled out a phone that just so happened to be the Motorola Moto X.

There really isn’t much else to say about the phone other than how Schmidt is interacting with both people and the phone. For example, Schmidt starts by holding it up to his head for what has to be a hilarious conversation with some overseas diplomat, because that’s how Big E rolls.

“Aaaahahhaha, Kim Jon Un-derrated.”

We also see him holding it down in the perfect position for texting to Sergey Brin or Larry Page about, well what else? How awesome it is to be a Google big wig worth billions of dollars.

“Yo Sergz and Larr, have I told you how awesome we are lately? Picked up a new Brooks Bros. sweater to celebrate in the Valley.”

But then Tim Cook, giddy as all hell, showed up and the mood changed.

Until Schmidt shouted out “How’s that stock price, Cookie?” Which of course gave everyone a good laugh thanks to the hand gesture for added value.

In the end, the Moto X was there, with Eric Schmidt. In white. Here are a couple of extra pictures.

  • Kanaga Deepan N

I really hate white phones… But this one is kinda cute… But I don’t like the front of Moto X (even though its black like Nexus 4)…

  • Fresh360

Those leaks really did not do this phone any justice. This is very lust worthy… *Slow Claps*

  • Mark Mann

did i miss the extra pictures or…

  • MotoRulz

That phone looks good in-hand. Looks sorta HTC ONEish at a glance and thats not a bad thing

  • maxx1987

    man that thing looks slick

  • Nex

“How’s that stock price, Cookie?” LOL CLASSIC

  • sagisarius

Unless he has enormous hands, it looks a lot like a 4.3 inch phone.

    • Kenton Douglas

      4.5″

      • Jay

        4.7″ actually

        • Mike Hilal

I’d go as far as to say it looks to be the size of the Gnex. 4.7″ wouldnt be out of the question

        • Mike Hilal

I’d go as far as to say it looks to be the size of the Gnex. 4.7″ wouldnt be out of the question

  • jcorf

I just want to know the specs on this thing already..

  • Blue Sun

I’m surprised no one made any comments/complaints about the face of the device not being white.

    • Mitch Joa

Did you read the comments? Many many many posts about that.

      • Blue Sun

I just looked again, did a CTRL+F search in this thread for posts about the FACE of the device not being white. I did not see once comment at the time I initiated this comment about this.

  • Bionic

Im gonna go see Pacific Rim, peace out

  • T4rd

I lol’d at Cook’s reaction to the imposed stock price joke.

This is why I love Droid Life. It’s not a “professional” site like the Verge or Engadget, therefor you all can have fun with your articles like this and everyone will love you more for it.

    Well played! =D

    • Idon’t Know

      It’s childish.
Meanwhile Apple makes 70% of smartphone revenue and Goggle makes more money from services on iOS devices than on Android. Plus the only Android manufacturer not losing money is Samsung who pretend they don’t even use Android. Nobody can give away an Android tablet unless they sell it for cost like the Nexus devices which have huge quality control issues. Not quite how Google saw Android working out.
Schmidt btw uses a Blackberry and has said so recently. He has also been demoted to mouthpiece and has a reputation for being a slime ball and all around joke.

      • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

This guy was having a really bad day.

  • Bionic

Tim cook looks like an aging metro sexual in that pic. Oh wait……….he is!

  • hfoster52

Looks like the camera sensor and audio jack is what is making that phone so thick.

    • Bionic

that……….and the fact that this is a budget phone and motorola believes super thin phones are over hyped.

      • Mitch Joa

        *cough* entire RAZR line *cough*

        • Bionic

I said super thin not makes sense thin

  • Michael

Where’s the Verizon LOGO?! I need the Verizon logo!

  • Bionic

That’s me holding the phone. My identity has been leaked.

  • http://www.naskaras.com/ Thanassi Karageorgiou

I agree this was a fun post. Makes me conscious of how geeky our community is though. Can Moto win me back from two consecutive Samsung phones, including my rooted, AOSP’ed VZW GS4? Show me the specs!

  • Terrormaster

I really want to like this device. But the more I see the more its starting to not look like the device for me. Looks like only the back comes in different colors. The back appears to be curved which means the phone wont sit flat on a surface unless face down (which can be solved with cases but defeats the purpose of customizing the look). Also looks like the headphone jack is at the top which makes no sense to me. OK, that last one is nit picking as the screen will rotate.

    • Mitch Joa

they took a page from apple’s book and innovated the screen rotation right out, didn’t you hear s

    • Eric Ramos

Everything your comment contained was nitpicking lol I like headphone jacks on the bottom if m listening to music and have my phone in my pocket, in the car I prefer it on the top so it doesn’t yank my phone around if its on my lap. I listen to music in the car a lot more so its not a big deal at all.

  • Matt Galyon

So…I’ve seen people on other sites throwing around “kevlar” as the material for the backing like it comes from some solid leaks. All I find is some old February rumors suggesting it would have a kevlar backing.

From the pictures we’ve seen so far of the back plate, it looks like polycarbonate right?

    • Looks_like_Kevlar

The close-ups show a weave-like texture… I can’t tell if it’s an actual Kevlar weave or just a printer/engraved texture to look like a wave..

  • enigmaco

It could be a mid tier phone, but I thought the rumor of key lime pie is that it is designed to run on lowered powered phones? I am willing to give up some upper tier specs for a smooth functioning phone.

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

And then there was someone that made sense.

      • enigmaco

Also lower specs means lower prices win win

    • ROB

So…my bionic can run is smoothly and I dont have to upgrade?

  • Drome

    A+ article.

  • shecalledmejay

The only thing I don’t like is the audio jack on top of the phone.

    • bananatroll

      I think its perfect!

    • Terrormaster

Agreed. Not sure why it’s at the top. Jacks are better at the bottom whether in pocket or on your desk it just makes the most sense.

      • thefullritz

        Except when in a cradle….

    • enigmaco

I don’t understand the issue with it being at the top, it makes more sense to me to have it there, your phone is going to be in a upright position majority of the time.

      • Mitch Joa

where do you keep your phone when you’re listening to music? in your hand facing you or in your pocket? and then how do you hold it in your pocket? top up or down? DL has trained many of us to use top down, screen in :)

        • enigmaco

It’s in my pocket or in the center console, or I might be using bluetooth headphones. But my phone is still up, for when I need to pull my phone out for a call or something it is in the right position that I do not need to turn it. My problem with it being on the bottom is for instance you use your phone as your player in your car, there is no flush way to put it down without it being on its back. Now with the jack being on top you have multiple options of how and where to put the phone.

          • Mitch Joa

If it’s top down in your pocket, it’s the right orientation when you pull it out. At least we can all agree, screen out is bad. :)

          • enigmaco

understandable just feel it is more versatile to have it on the top. Think DL needs to do a pros/cons on top vs bottom jack position. Screen out is bad I agree.

          • Mitch Joa

If it has this same writing style, I definitely agree :)

        • Paul Hansen

And for the rest of us that were trained by Motorola years ago… Top up screen in ;)

    • Droidzilla

I prefer it to be on top . . . that’s what she said!

      I’ll show myself out.

  • Mordy Festinger

@kellex I like this writing format. You should do it all the time.

  • Turdferguson

Love this phone but does anyone know if there will be a high end model of this device coming out? I would really enjoy a 1080p display with a better processor..

    • bananatroll

October, this year for sure. Likely at the google event they hold every year at the same time.

    • MikeCiggy

This topic has been beaten to death. Bionic says this is a mid-range device and a hero device is to follow some time after. No one knows when.

    • Bionic

      Yes

      • ravenofdoom

So the X comes out with mid-range specs (<5" 720p, S4 pro) in Aug.
(8/23), and the "X+" (moto hero device) comes out in Oct. with high
specs (5"+ 1080p, Snapdragon 800)? Why even release the Droid Ultra if
the specs between this and the "X+" (hero) seem so similar?

        • Bionic

Because the new droid line is old pipeline and it won’t be snapdragon 800

          • ravenofdoom

Seems like Motorola’s tradition is continuing… releasing a convoluted series of phone variants to dump inventory on the uninformed consumer.

Aug. 8 release date for Moto Ultra, then an unveiling of the Hero Moto “X+” 2 months later? This smells like Droid Bionic / Razr all over again.

          • Verizon

Contracts are contracts. Since Moto had to fulfill it’s obligations to Verizon and Verizon wanted three new Razr like phones, that is what Moto did. These are probably the phones that someone (forget who) inside Google/Moto said weren’t that impressive.

Will they sell? Probably, but once Moto starts that $500 million add campaign they probably won’t sell that well and end up as free phones before you know it.

          • LucasMonroe

So I guess I need to wait for the good one?

  • Weber

I wonder how easy it will be to use swipe to text if your phone is set down on a flat surface. Looks like there’s gonna be a lot of rocking.

  • DanWazz

The front is black. I though they were gonna make the whole thing one color. I like the all black front with a color back, just noticing it is different than previously reported.

  • moelsen8

this phone looks really nice. like some serious thought went into it.

  • Allen Yates

Does Tim Cook really need a name tag?

    • Guest

I thought it was Anderson Cooper. /s

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

I think the name tag is fly. I might invest in one. Xeroxed and all.

      • http://www.naskaras.com/ Thanassi Karageorgiou

lol you said “fly”. 90′s throwback slang. I love it.

  • Jack Hoffman

I’ve always hated white phones, but I have to admit, that looks amazing!

    • EC8CH

Yep, this one so far and the HTC One are the only ones I’ve thought have looked any good.

      • Mitch Joa

The white HTC One is wayyy better than the black one, maybe it’s because it’s more silver?

        • Weber

I was gonna say….it’s silver, not white, right? Maybe more of a shiny matte silver (if that makes sense)?

  • Ian Smith

narrative sucked but phone actually looks phenomenally better than i though.

  • EC8CH

+1 on the textured back…. very Nexus 7 which is a good thing!

  • EC8CH

It’s and older rev… the new pics show the speaker perforations on the other side of the camera….

    just sayin’

    • Robert Macri

or maybe its a newer rev?

      • Nideda24

Could it be that this is the higher spec’d hero device with the speaker on the right? Lower spec’d Moto X has speaker on the left?. The build quality of this phone looks much nicer than the phone is yesterday’s article.

        Or it’s just a prototype…

        • Paul Hansen

Or it’s a CEO’s device that he had built with a “Custom” shell to his liking? :P

          • Mitch Joa

I wanna be a CEO with those privileges :(

          • Paul Hansen

            Don’t we all…

        • EC8CH

Interesting thought. If so they’re piratically identical in their layout and shape.

          • Bionic

Sarge has said that the hero device almost looks the exact same but with a bigger screen and more parts of it are metal instead of plastic

  • Michael Valadez

Is the back textured and not just a pattern? I like the look of it so far. So is the consensus that that this phone is not truly a flagship device but some mid-tier device? The more I read about it, it looks like an upgrade over my GNex. I am not in love with the S4, and I hate the button arrangement on the One. Right now, I’m leaning towards the X. Where are others at on this?

    • bananatroll

think of a gnex with better build quality, dependability, call reception, signal, camera, etc,. The only thing NON-stock about it is the fact that motocare, my verizon, and motocare ID will installed on big reds version. The rest is all stock android, including the new camera featured on the S4 google edition, and HTC google edition.

It’s a Nexus phone in all but name, except its on ALL major carriers, while being heavily advertised, and heavily competitive with iphone, galaxy phone.

  • Steve Benson

    Love this. Made my Friday.

  • Ben Davis

Looks great! I love the textured back. Give me a stock or near-stock experience, external SD or 64GB internal storage, and a low off-contract price, and I’m there.

    • bananatroll

It is pure android, with the exception of motocare and each carriers proprietary account management apps.

  • Taylor Abrahamson

This phone just looks like the HTC Rezound, and the HTC Incredible to me.. Sure you only one color option on those phones. But they just look the same if you ask me. Which is not good because those two were the worst phones I’ve ever had.

    • turdbogls

phone asthetics have very little to do with bad software.

      • zurginator

Especially when it’s from a different manufacturer…. and doesn’t really look like either of those phones to begin with.

      • bananatroll

unless its hardware navigation buttons of course

        • turdbogls

          touché

      • Taylor Abrahamson

Absolutely. I am a software engineer. But it doesn’t change the fact that every time I see it I immediately just think of all those issues, it just ‘reminds’ me of the painful experiences I had with the other devices and how cheaply they were made. The only way I’m going to get over that is by getting to hold and use this new device.

        • turdbogls

so true….i have a very sour taste in my mouth from my Thunderbolt days, but the HTC one (every time i play with one) washes that sour taste out a little bit.

  • Guest

    Hilarious captions!

  • Timothy Bracken

White back with black trim? This may be the first pic of a different color combo.

  • Weber

    hahaha Kellen, you’re an idiot.
I’m digging the look of the phone, oddly.
Also, is “Cookie” wearing Transition lenses? Those are still a thing?

    • WAldenIV

Why would Transitions lenses not still be a thing? People need prescription glasses. Clip on sunglasses are often bulky, ill-fitting, and all-around horrible.

      • Weber

I didn’t think that they were still around. Come to think of it, Tim Cook looks like he would be in a commercial for Transitions.

        • Anon

They’re incredibly common, and widely sold, though not necessarily under that trademarked name, for the exact reason WaldenIV mentions.

          • Weber

I guess not having to wear glasses has kept me out of the loop all these years.

    • Droidzilla

He doesn’t have to move forward in his life with Glass compatibility in mind since Apple won’t “invent” that tech for another 5 years.

  • Droidzilla

A wild Hypebeast appeared! What do you want to do?
    -Run
    -Fight
-Take pictures and post like mad

    • https://twitter.com/paladaxar Paladaxar

Oh man…I miss those books. Actually, now that I think of it, this would be a great idea for an app/ebook mashup :)

      • Mitch Joa

        books? pretty sure it’s a pokemon reference..haha

        • https://twitter.com/paladaxar Paladaxar

Oh, I thought it was a reference to the old “choose your own adventure” books where you had two or three choices for each option:
          1) run! (turn to page 18)
          2) fight (turn to page 30)
          etc.

But maybe you guys are right about Pokemon…I was a little too old for Pokemon when it came out

          • Mitch Joa

i forgot about those! ya darn old man ;)

          • justincase_2008

            I miss text adventures.

      • PaulSchroeder

        Those Pokemon books?

      • Weber

Are you thinking of the Goosebumps books where you could choose your path?

        • Droidzilla

It was a Pokemon reference, but I can’t help but post this. Also, thank you @paladaxar:disqus for reminding me of choose your own adventure books; good times in elementary school!

          • deadpenguins

            LMFAO. EPIC.

      • LiterofCola

The Choose Your Own Adventure series?

      • Adam Emshwiller

He may or may not be talking about the Goosebumps books series for children…

      • Verizon
      • Jack Hoffman

Sounds like NES-version Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior to me!

    • Sirx

Where’s the option for “Capture”? You throw your Mastercard Ball at it (which is like a regular pokeball except made out of crushing debt and your children’s college funds) and hope that it’s enough to bring it under your ownership!

Of course, if I have to damage it first, I’m gonna be pissed, what with Verizon jacking up the price of their warranty coverage and all :-(

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

Someone explain the volume rocker to me. It didn’t just disappear.
And if Schmidt has it, damn right i’m buying it.

    • Pengwn

You can see it below the power switch in the “texting” photo. That’s actually really disappointing for me.. I hate that configuration on my N7 as its very cumbersome to take screenshots and boot into recovery.

      • Daeshaun Griffiths

        Damn i didn’t peep that!!
And damn that positioning is a turn off.

      • EC8CH

Agree. I think the G-Nex has the perfect button/port arrangement.

        • zurginator

I actually prefer the N4′s arrangement. Similar, but tweaked to be just right.

          • EC8CH

            I guess I should have said “button/port arrangement”….

            and carrier availability :-(

          • zurginator

Ah yes, Gnex definitely had the better port arrangement. And camera location.

          • Droidzilla

I will forever be grateful to the N4 for luring me out of my Verizon contract. I save more money monthly from that than I did when I refinanced my house.

    • p_droid

What do you mean? It’s on the right side, underneath the power button.

    • nick rigsby

What do you mean it didn’t just disappear? if you look in the extra gallery the volume rocker is on the right side below the lock button. unless i’m totally missing something

      • nick rigsby

apparently replies aren’t shown automatically anymore, sorry for being redundant, didn’t see all of those under me until i commented

  • Warwick

Will it come in purple? If so buy!

  • Bob G

    Interesting textured back.

  • tyguy829

Wtf did i just read? Lol

  • sc4fpse

    This narrative rocked. Thumbs up.

    • Idon’t Know

      Kids

  • Butters619

    Love the story telling…

    …want the phone!

  • MrOrange645

Looks like a different texture than the matte black one we’ve seen photos of, which appeared almost rubberized. Also the camera looks flush with the back instead of slightly indented.

    • xXyolo_boyx69x420

It looks like the back is rounded??

Seems like it will be a pain in the ass to type on if I have it down on the table while eating a bowl of cereal.

      • tomn1ce

all you have to do ix type then go back to your cereal or finish your cereal and then type… -_-

  • Eric R.

    I’d get red

  • djnorton

That is one good looking phone! The back reminds me of the HTC ONE.

  • AndrewScottRox

I wonder how often he changes phones. Probably not as much as Kellex.

    • El_Big_CHRIS

The phone kinda looked like an HTC one series. Looks really nice.

      • Eric

Indeed. This design is a lot better than the Moto Droid series.

        • jose

The textured white is actually quite sexy.

          • Joseph Barrientos

couldnt agree with you more, i think if it was a plain white i wouldnt like it but the texture looks as if it has a more tactical feel, diggin it.

          • Jared Tau

I hope the textured white back is rubber or rubberized

      • michael arazan

I’m Guessing Schmidt is just waiting for his 24 kt Gold one to come back from being plated

    • JonathonFlores

Wouldn’t it be awesome if Schmidt was running CM 10 on that bad boy hahaha

      • Butters619

If he was, then CM is doing freaking amazing on their release schedules :P. I mean it’s not often they have a ROM made before a phone.

        • JonathonFlores

He also has a PHONE before everyone else does. He must be doing amazing thigs.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Probably not as much as me. I will say that changing phones all of the time is not that much fun. Setting up a phone takes way too much time.

      • AndrewScottRox

That brings up an interesting question: have you found that you have streamlined your list of installed apps over all of this time? That’s to say that you only install your go-to apps or most frequently used apps?

  • Dan

The whole phone should be white, having only the back white is a hideous trend.

    • NexusPhan69

Could be he black trim, white back version. It can be customized, don’t forget.

    • normmcgarry

Well I suppose that would be why you can customize it how you want, dudez.

      • Dan

we’ll see how far the customization goes

    • PhillipCun

black on front looks way better than white, IMO. it doesn’t distract you when you use the screen and the screen (naturally black when off) blends with black. If you had a white front, all you notice is how big and white the bezel is. Again just my opinion.,

      • Dan

I can see how one would feel that way. I just prefer the entire phone to be the same color, But given how google phones have been colored in the past i doubt they’ll let you change the front color.

        • turdbogls

there was a post last week (?) about how this phone is supposed to come in a variety of colors front and back….i remember seeing white Front glass. so for all you black front haters, you will have an option too.

          • bananatroll

the color of the glass, back and trim will be customizable via the online portal at time of release. Carriers will recieve generic white and black ones with 16gb of memory… Non removable.

        • zurginator

Swappable front colors would be obscenely expensive to manage I would presume. Once Moto gets sales like Samsung or Apple it might happen, but right now it would just be too expensive.
