Motorola Ad Talks Moto X, USA Assembled, and Customized by You

motorola ad clip

Get ready for it, the new Motorola is coming, and it’s bringing with it a USA assembled, customizable phone known as the Moto X. In an advertisement expected to run in newspapers tomorrow, Motorola talks about their new project and how no one thought they could do what they are about to do.

The Moto X was first announced (if you can call it that) on May 29 by new Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside. He said at the time that they planned to assemble the device (which he dubbed a “hero” device”) in Texas, something no other company currently does. He also mentioned that the phone would use advanced sensors to predict your needs, is “unlike other things out there,” would arrive later this summer, and will be widely distributed amongst carriers.

In this advertisement that will be published tomorrow – can see it in New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post – Motorola introduces another new feature to the Moto X, maybe the most significant. The phone will be the first that “you can design yourself,” the ad reads. We aren’t exactly sure what that means, but your mind can probably come up with a few ideas immediately. Are we talking the appearance of it or are we talking internal hardware choices too? Both? We’ve heard rumors in the past that suggest color choices (maybe up to 20), but will the look be the only thing you can customize?

Motorola’s VP-global brand and product marketing Brian Wallace said in an interview to Ad Age that smartphones are like shoes or a watch in that you carry them everywhere with you. People even judge a person based on their smartphone. “Yet, it’s the one thing you carry that’s the least customizable.” They are going to change that.

We should also point out that Guy Kawasaki – one of Moto’s new champions – asked his G+ followers back in March if they’d like to be able to personalize their phones like Porsche allows with their Exclusive program. We assumed at the time he was talking about a program similar to what we’re about to see. I guess those thoughts were right. How exciting.

  • Bionic

    Colors you can choose.

    Black
    White
Green, baby shitt green, lime green
Blue, metallic blue, 1970’s st Louis cardinal blue
    Red
    Purple, plum crazy purple
    Pink for tim242
    Grey

    • Albert Reyna

if its just colors to choose then do you know what material the phone is made out of?

      • Bionic

        i doubt it, but MAYBE

  • Travis

Cant wait! yea the specs might be mediocre but still going with this. coming from gnex

  • Floski

    Does this mean, motherfucking, KEYBOARD?

    • Bionic

      No

  • Bionic

I’ll say it again. Hardware is not customizable. Color is. You can also pay for premium to upload a picture or skin.

    • AmendFIRSTment

Do you think they will let me choose between a really good camera and a better battery?

      • Bionic

        I just said no hardware.

        • AmendFIRSTment

oh, the camera is hardware. What about the core, like 2 core or 4 core?

          • Bionic

            .

          • bananatroll

Numba one, report to my quarters for debriefing immediately!!!

          • Vanquishgc

Sad you have to keep posting this, but they’re bringing upon themselves :P

    • bananatroll

Whoa, whoa, whoa you’re saying you can pick if it has mm motoblur or stock android?

      • Bionic

        .

        • bananatroll

          Lol OK.

        • Vanquishgc

          THANK YOU LOL

      • Chris

You can already. Buy a nexus or root.

        Pretty simple my friend….

        • bananatroll

No current nexus anything on Verizon. And rooting comes with its own set of drawbacks. I shouldn’t have to root my phone to get back to the Android experience that Google intended the first place.

My RAZR HD is rooted, and an awesome device. But I shouldn’t have had to spend nearly 48 hours hacking and tinkering with a phone I spent nearly 600 on just to remove Verizon’s bloat ware.

    • Sporttster

Makes sense if you look at the ring around the Moto logo above. Shows various colors, indicating you can choose color choice.

    • NexusMan

“In fact some people said it couldn’t be done. But we’re not just any company. And nothing this exciting ever comes easily.”

      • Bionic

since when do we trust what CEO’s say? Trust me the hardware isnt customizable

  • AmendFIRSTment

The original photo has her in a very sexy bikini bottom, the black granny panties were Photoshop’d in after.

  • RoninX

There’s no way that “Designed by you.” just means “You can choose the color.”

(Unless the people at Moto are idiots.)

    ((And I don’t think they are…))

    • Bionic

It’s just the color and uploadable pictures and skins. Nothing hardware. Per sarge.

      • r0lct

that would definitely not live up to the hype of “customized by you”

    • AmendFIRSTment

Your hopes are to high… You should instead hope that, ‘at least’ they will let you pick your own color.

      …There is no spoon…

  • markswoods

Her right leg looks oddly placed. I think she could be trying to signal a “4”. July 14th would be Bastille Day, right. So this goes out in France first, and then…

    • http://www.jaredmucha.blogspot.com/ Jared Mucha

if you look at the shadows, it says 10, the same day t-mobile has something huge planned.. a coincidence??

      • samari711

If you check the angle of the sun, it’s pretty obvious that it’s 7:30, so expect something july 30th

  • jgearson

could the internal hardware be modular so you can buy different hardware if you don’t like the stock but its sold separately?

  • mbagasao

If it’s color customization, are the colors represented in the circle around the Moto logo the choices? hmmm…

    • NexusMan

I definitely think that’s part of it.

  • enigmaco

(in mortal kombat movie voice) IT HAS BEGUN!

  • NIGHTSCOUT

    MoRtorola ERRRX!

  • GigaCode

i would be sold if this is true

  • I-Troll-U

I was just told that Sarge is wrong.

  • Fred

More than likely they will offer phones matching the colors in their new logo. How hip is that!!

  • Nelson Mandela

This is almost as exciting as the Facebook home update!!!

    • meijin3

Really glad to see you’re well enough to post here.

  • Mchl496

Come on Moto… push us to 3 gb of ram

    • Bionic

      2014

  • Hans Dirk Kwazneski

So…. this is…the exact opposite of an Apple device?? Yeeeeeees

    • She_Beast

Apple has transitioned a few product lines into US assembly, and is rumored to be developing an iPhone that gives a choice of color. So, not exactly the opposite… I’m not sure why the iPhone even needs to be brought into this.

      • needa

a few lines? i thought they just started with the mbp as their first.

  • Taylor Abrahamson

Drag and drop features?? Slide out qwerty: Yes. Microsd card slot: Yes please. Water proofing?? YES PLEASE. Moto blur? NO THANKS. Unlocked bootloader? Yes please.

  • Geo

I have a VZW GNEX and this is the only phone that has my interest right now. As for saying mid-range specs, you guys are hurting my phones feelings.

  • shdowman

I tried to tell you all this months ago, but you all laughed and mocked me…that’ll learn ya!!

  • Ian Smith

maybe all of the colors around the new motorola logo will be the ones we can choose from? 12 colors.

  • Bionic

That girl has a big butt

  • lgreg64

They will probably let you choose color and memory size but that will be a great start for the new moto.

    • Bionic

      no, color only

      • lgreg64

still a good start to see how this works before the hero

      • needa

if they give options to let us change the specs… which i cant see happening… it will be a while before i buy one. no way am i going to buy a phone from a brand new plant (so to speak) with brand new employees doing brand new things until all of the kinks are ironed out. and the more they give options on the longer that will take.

      • enigmaco

Color isn’t a big deal, and no reason to devote a whole page to though. if that is the case then they are going to have some problems.

        • Bionic

Well that’s what you’re getting. Confirmed by sarge.

  • Droid4

Please let one of the customizations be an optional slideout keyboard.

    • bananatroll

Bro, you can rent my time machine for free. That way you can go back in time when physical keyboards were still integrated into android phones!

      • Droid 4

Thanks, I’ll need it to be able to text and drive at 88 MPH.

      • Bionic

Haha. People need to grow up.

    • Bionic

      no

    • RoninX

      Yes!

  • Behdad

As I think, the first phone will be Moto X 1!

See how the boy and girl jumped?!

  • tharealoc

I wonder if this was moto/google’s plan the whole time, or if they decided to just follow the rumor mill for a while and take what seemed most popular. If this is the case, it is a genius way of designing a phone based on what users want.

  • Bionic

The internals are NOT customizable. The color is. per sarge

    • bananatroll

      screen size is 4.7″ ?

      • Bionic

The hero is 5 inches. The mid range sarge didnt report on that much because its simply not worth it. anywhere between 4.3 and 4.7 tho

        • bananatroll

I’d bet 20 bucks the mid-range will run the 4.65″ 720p off the HD razr. It’s the perfect way to use the components they already have for a new line-up… Factory efficient!

          • Bionic

i agree that makes sense, but we shall see.

          • bananatroll

any idea if hero will run a AMOLED or SLCD?

          • Bionic

AMOLED from what sarge said in the past

          • bananatroll

thx, so if the 14th is hero day, then what is mid-range day?

          • Bionic

good question, you would think soon based on it passing the FCC for all the carriers

          • bananatroll

well its gotta be a tuesday or thursday in tech world – always has been. I’ll put my money on next thursday lol

  • Kaiken

Looks like we have a X1 by the way those people are jumping in that picture.

  • Patrick Crumpler

With Google at the helm. Probably just one phone with specs you pick out. You want 1080 or 720. Dual or quad. This way they can upgrade the specs and not have to upgrade the phone. Let the others play the game. Pick out a solid chassis and run with it.

    • Dale

This would be a dream come true, being able to customize a phone just like ordering a new computer!

    • CapnShiner

That’s kind of what I’m hoping. Manufacture smartphones in much the same way as computers. Pick a product line, which will determine the base options, chassis, and price. Then chooses optional upgrades, like a more powerful CPU, better GPU, more RAM, more internal storage space, better camera, bigger battery, higher screen resolution, color, etc. There could be a model with a slide-out keyboard, a candybar qwerty version like a Droid Pro, and maybe even a portrait slider like Blackberry Torch or Palm Pre (may it RIP). There could be a model with a slim profile and non-removable battery like a RAZR and thicker models with removable batteries and microSD slots. There could be options for plastic or metal chassis. There could be options for size like 4″, 4.3″, 4.6″, and 5″. There could be customizable graphics for the chassis or maybe even engraving. If Google can pull off any of it, the possibilities are endless.

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

    Goosebumps.

  • EatUrCrap

My upgrade is in 2 months…please come out by then!
Technically the last week of August, before the full 2 year upgrades on Verizon are implemented.

    • Bionic

      October 14th for the hero

      • mike

Just like the bionic…by the time it hit stores

  • Albert Reyna

Crazy thought, but what if the specs leaked of the xfon is how the phone starts off if you don’t customize it but depending the way you customize is how much the phone will come cost.

    • samari711

I’m not sure how that would work with the FCC

      • Albert Reyna

Me either its a crazy thought though lol

    • Bionic

      sorry but no

  • Dre Fay

please oh please be priced reasonable, like the nexus 4, cuz i will not get rid of my unlimited plan w/VZW

    • mike

You have until October to save up some $$, no way it’s gonna be under $500

  • Defenestratus

Shaping up to be the next major letdown in a 4-year long history of letdowns moto.

  • Suralin

I’m trying to think of what could be customizable but doesn’t affect phone development. I came up with the following:

Battery (Size & Removable or not)
    External Storage
    Internal Storage
    Casing (Color and maybe material?)

    Camera

I would think that the only two things available to customize is color and battery size.

    • mike

Color and internal storage….Im sure they’ll only have one battery to start.

      • tharealoc

Considering moto has offered this in the past and samsung does the same with color and storage size options, I think moto will be offering more customization than just color and storage size.

    • aye_winchell

wireless charging could be an option.

  • PyroHoltz

Everyone’s comments for this ad are just too damn funny. Sadly, this phone has been hyped so much, it’s almost impossible that it can live up to the expectations. Still excited for it though.

    • NexusMan

Hyped so much? I think the G Nex was hyped WAAAAAAY more and for a longer period of time than this….This…this is nothing.

  • Liderc

That new logo is hideous lol.

    • bananatroll

      I think its sexy….mmmm

      • Kevin

        the girl isn’t the logo

        • bananatroll

i know. The title is tho.

  • mustbepbs

    Mid range specs.

    Calling it now.

    • nate

well that’s what all of the rumors and leaks have said. Nobody wants that, though.

    • Eric

If it had high end specs, in addition to being customizable, I’m sure the price would go up quickly.

    • j

We already know the specs pretty much, and yes, it’s a mid-range phone which will hopefully command a mid-range off contract price.
This is NOT THE top opf the line xfone that will be available at a later date.

    • Daniel Dlugos

Apple has proven you don’t need high end specs in a phone to be successful (and make a boatload of money in the process). It’s all about the user experience. If Moto can deliver a high end user experience with mid-range hardware, good for them.

      • Dave

I agree, but Samsung now accounts for 71% of Android activations. It’s going to take years of near perfection, incredible marketing, and unbelievable quality to even come near competing on a domestic, let alone global scale with them. I’m all for great competition, but I’m not falling back into Moto’s arms just yet.

      • E A butler

Apple hardware aside, new Apple phones run the software fine, If this X wont run the apps right then it is an instant fail. No one wants a new phone that can’t run their favorite software.

      • mustbepbs

Motorola can only create a user experience like the iPhone if they design the software. Just throwing vanilla Android on there with a few tweaks and features isn’t going to be a compelling device for the mainstream, as brought out by Nexus sales. People like the bells and whistles.

    • Jimneezy

Nothing wrong with it if the price is right

    • NexusMan

I don’t buy the mid range spec X Fon speculation. Moto has said they will have multiple devices, and there is no way their hero device, which they intend to be direct competition with the iPhone and the Galaxy S will be a low or mid spec’d device.

  • sirmeili

I just cracked the screen on my GNex and I was going to either, replace it from ebay (as I’m still in a contract with Verizon), or just pay my ETF and get the hell away from verizon and get an S4/HTC One and do T-Mobile or straight talk.

I’m starting to think maybe I should wait to see what this will be about and just use a cracked screen for now. I’ve always loved Motorola build quality, but once they started adding bloat, I went away from them (My OG droid is still working as a clock today).

  • Blue Sun

What a waste of advertising $$$. Motorola, next time give me that money earmarked for an ad like this & let me kick you in your collective nuts.

  • 2Berad

I pray JLo is nowhere near this announcement!!!

    • nb

      only her ass

  • Moto X Forum

I’m wondering if internal specs such as processor and screen will be customizable as well as external colors and finishes? http://www.MotoXforum.net

    • nate

I hope not. Wouldn’t that make roms confusing and difficult?

    • Bionic

      no

  • Joshua Bailey

The guy is making an “X” and the chick is making a “1.” Maybe this is for the Moto X hero device with an October 1, 2013 release date? Brainstorming here, folks.

    • Doan

      Or maybe it’s the Motorola X 1.

      • Jeff Helget

Yeah, we get the One X from HTC and the X One from Motorola… heads explode everywhere.

        • Doan

But what can HTC follow One X with? Two X doesn’t sound good, neither does One X 2. X1 can be followed up indefinitely. One X is a single year name that will end after the phone runs it’s course, and everyone will forget about it.

          • narlin

Yeah but moto already had an X and X2

          • Doan

You mean the Droid line? This wouldn’t be Droid X1, etc, it would be Motorola X1, etc.

          • Jason B

Milestone X and Milestone X2 outside of the U.S.

          • Doan

Ah. But again, those aren’t simply “Motorola X” titles.

          • Justin W

As Doan said, they aren’t simply Moto X titles. Also, it wouldn’t be much different than HTC’s One X line changing to HTC One for the second “generation” if you could call it that.

          • Justin W

It would be awesome if we could just stick with the same name for a phone… eg, 2013 Moto X, 2014 Moto X, etc. Brand Loyalty, and you wouldn’t have to keep increasing the numbers count.

          • Anon

The HTC One point One. ;)

      • Joshua Bailey

I hope that isn’t it’s name. So confusing for those HTC fans.

      • foamman

I’m going with the X!. Her shadow appears to be the dot for the exclamation point. His shadow is insignificant…they also appear to be coming from two different suns. Photoshop anyone?!?

        • LiterofCola

Who cares if it’s photoshopped, probably about 90% of ads out there are altered.

        • Raven

Obviously photoshopped shadows. Not necessarily two suns, but one artificial light source not very far over their heads. If you draw a line between their hands and their shadows they intersect up in the ad on about the word “nothing”. So, I think their shadows mean just that, nothing. But, I do think their bodies are significant and definitely forming an X and a 1. So, that could mean the Moto X 1 or perhaps a date like 10/1, or even a roman 11 I suppose which could allude to another date.

      • Justin W

        Moto X 1st gen.

    • Bionic

      october 14th, per sarge

      • Butters619

For the mid range or the high end? Those mid range devices seem ready to go. I wonder if Moto would hold onto them until Ocotber just to drop the line up together. It would be smart to not release the mid-range devices before the grand slam.

        • Qwerty

I’m assuming the high end or else this would somewhat contradict Woodside’s announcing of a late summer release… unless October is considered late summer now?

          • Reginald Jefferson

It’s considered late summer in Florida HEEEEYOOOOO!!!!

          • Butters619

            And in Southern CA.

    • Guest

It’s the roman numeral for 11 so it must be releasing on July 11th. :)

      • SparkysShocker

my Birthday ftw…to bad it wont though

        • Eric R.

Maybe August 11. Next week just seems to soon.

    • tharealoc

Nice catch! whoa mind blown…on the X1 part..not so sure about the date..but I see what you did there, X = 10…

    • Tim Buchanan

      Brainstorm like these dudes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PSueHOY-Jk

    • James_75

Maybe Nov 1… as in XI or 11……

    • Albert Reyna

correct me if i am wrong but weren’t there rumors of a july 11th? XI=11

    • the_real_patrick_bateman

The guy is making an X, and the girl was just part of the stock photo. :-P

  • TimXer

I suspect these “customizeable by you” features will be like many of the standard S4 “who cares” features so I’m not anticipating anything mind-blowing here. I am psyched to see a new look/feel Moto device though, hopefully back to that feel of the DX! Love their quality builds!

  • Leroy1983

I hope it works out for them, Motorola been on the downfall for more then 2 years now. And we need more competitive players. because Samsung and apple are sucking it all up. Its do or die right now for them, hope they get it right

  • MotoRulz

Come on MOTO my name sake is counting on you..

    • Tyler Durden

Moving to Texas. Time to take all the prototypes.

    • EC8CH

      America

      Motorola… F#CK YEAH!

  • Butters619

    “XI” August 11th?

    (looking way to into it)

Side Note: Does it visually bug anybody else how much higher and farther out from the dock the guy is?

    • ßen Murphy

      He has a 1 piece, she’s wearing a 2 piece..maybe the 12th.

      • Butters619

If you were to look at them front the front the would be “IX” and then if you look at their shadows on the dock it’s either 10 or 01, so I am replacing my guess with September 1st or 10th.

No, but it bothers me how big the feet are on the woman.

      Peggy Hill size feet.

      • Butters619

She is a big woman. She may be taller than the man and surely in heels would easily edge him out.

    • Micromax

I’d bet on Oct. 1st…..although I hope it’s much sooner.

    • Patrick Crumpler

Zooming in you can tell the humans are poorly photo shopped.

      • r0lct

        how about the aliens?

  • Joshua Bailey

Beautiful ad. If they can boost those specs to the 800 and 1080p screen, it could be a hit.

    • j

dude.. the 800. not gonna happen this early.

  • Warwick

That AD does not have robots! Buy!

    • NexusPhan69

Must not be available on Verizon then. Time to abandon ship.

    • coolsilver

There is a Verizon variant that has made it through the FCC testing process.

      • Jeff C

but has it made it through Verizon testing lol. we all know how long that takes

        • zepfloyd

Jokes aside, Moto is pretty much the only OEM Verizon puts on a show for.

I think its because its the OEM with the least problems reported by users. At least that’s what it seemed like when I went to buy my GS3. They tried getting me to buy a Motorola saying that Samsung phones always have problems.

They know nothing. Blur is atrocious.

          • pappy53

There is no Blur anymore. Moto’s UI is now the closest to stock Android of anyone.

Their cam software and actual camera blows

            So do you.

It’s funny because when I went to buy the G-Nexus they tried to get me to buy the D-Razr….

          • EC8CH

I’ve always assumed that was due to their Droid marketing agreement. They will still push their own droid branded phones over anything else, even non droid moto devices.

it will be., but might not be instant… lol

Can Just see verizon pushing this phone back six months to sell more Razr Ultras.

        • Chris Schmucker

As much as i dont want to admit it, i think your right.

            I want a DROID5

        • Andrew Remmers

I would actually willingly drop verizon if they do this.

        • PhillipCun

only because their network is better… for now.

If pentaband for multiple-carrier-compatibility, will buy instantly.

Verizon will have it. 4 months later than others, and only in 1 color – the one THEY decide you want. With a triple locked boot loader. And no accessories. They won’t be happy until they break us all down and make us go back to 1 phone model choice for everyone. Like Apple.
