Thursday Poll: Are You Covered by Verizon’s 4G LTE Network?

verizon logo 4g lte

This morning, Verizon announced that the build-out of their 4G LTE network is “substantially complete” and that it covers 99% of their 3G network. This news comes right on schedule with what Big Red told us earlier in the year, but even though they claim to be 99% of the way there, we are still hearing from some readers who are still only in 3G territories. So to get a feel for Verizon’s coverage, at least in the DL community, we thought we’d toss out a poll to get your feedback.

Are you covered by Big Red’s LTE network or not? Simple “yes” or “no.”

You guys need a kind of in the poll, although technically fully covered here in NYC. It depends on the time day, location you are within any given building, and how crowded the network is.

  • Tim242

I’m even covered at my favorite vacation spot.

Buffalo National River, AR – Deep in the Ozarks

    • Diablo81588

Deep in the back woods lol

  • yankeesusa

The results of this poll speaks for itself. I hope now that sprint and softbank deal is almost finished and clearwire seems to be theirs too things will pick up.

  • Greyhame

Central Wisconsin is covered but is part of the Alltel leftover mess.

  • clay

yes, and cant wait to drop them and my gnex.

    • LionStone

Try another phone with better radios and you may be surprised.

  • Maxx HD

I consistently get 3g with my RAZR Maxx HD even though I’m in Verizon 4g coverage according to the maps. I’m in Rochester NY (on of the first 4g markets)

    • yankeesusa

Have your phone checked. My friend had issues with his galaxy nexus and then got the s4 and had no more issues.

      • Higher_Ground

well in all fairness it sounds like it wasn’t the individual’s phone but the type of phone he was using. I have a gnex and get terrible signal strength where a friend just recently picked up a motorola razr M and gets almost 2x the reception strength.

    • Dominick White

I would think some thing wrong with the phone, I never had issues with 4g services when I am in Rochester, even with my old thunderbolt, gnex and now DROID dna. . I even had service in hilton NY

  • turdbogls

blackberry Q10…..what do i win? dont tell me it a blackberry Q10

  • shecalledmejay

Everybody is complaining about the speeds getting slower but me I’m happy I tried downloading something on 3g and it took for ever! then turn on the 4g and it took less than a minute. The slowest 4g speeds are still faster than 3g.

    • chihova

agreed. when Red had their 4g issue not long ago and i was stuck on 3g i felt like i went back to the dark ages.

  • RoadsterHD1

I’m grandfathered in an Unlimited 4G plan. I get up to 63Mps ~ avg. 40Mps at home and 8Mps at work. I do not have any speed issues. San Bernardino and Orange county

    • yankeesusa

Lucky fool! I wish they were still offering the 4gb promotion. I would switch right now. 2gb is just too little.

      • RoadsterHD1

Yeah, I use between 20 and 35 Gigs a month.

  • Bionic

    :)

  • Blue Sun

Yes, I have VZW 4G LTE coverage 97% of the time in Silicon Valley. Sadly, I barely have 3G in the office.

  • Jordan Pfingsten

Yes, but I don’t use VZW anymore. I was an early adopter with an HTC Thunderbolt. I loved VZW, until they kicked me off Unlimited when family went to share everything. Been rocking my Nexus 4 on AT&T pre-paid ever since!! Have NOT missed LTE battery drain at all. On my Galaxy S4 I’m now at 70% battery after having the phone off my charger for 16 Hours. HSPA+ > LTE everyday for battery life!

That’s not to say I won’t be using LTE on AT&T when they bring it to Fargo (MINOT FIRST BEFORE FARGO!? THE EFF AT&T?!?!)

    • LionStone

New phones on LTE don’t drain the battery like the first LTE phones did.

  • Adrian

Technically yes, but I have zero bars inside and when I’m outside it will constantly go from 4G with a few bars to 3G with 1 bar. Several places that ATT has coverage I’m with no bars and a draining battery. If this is their 99% coverage, it may be time to switch carriers. It’s unreliable 4G at best.

    • Higher_Ground

Yep, my gf has ATT and while she’s got 3 bars of LTE and ~8-10 Mbps I’ve got 1 bar if I”m lucky and 1-2 Mbps. I guess it’s great for the 2-3 times a year I go far enough into the country that ATT doesn’t have a signal, but at that point I’m lucky to grab 1 bar of 3G on VZW.

  • debonu

Kind of… Should be an option. I have it at work but lose it when I head home… =/

  • debonu

    Razr M

  • JRMACK

I get 3G all throughout my neighborhood. Not sure if it’s just my phone, but I guess i’m part of the 1%!

  • Weber

I voted yes, but I need a “yes, but barely because I have to deal with the GNex radios.” option…

  • EC8CH

    Blackberry’s don’t count.

    • Bionic

Right, who in their right mind uses a damn stupid blackberry anymore?

  • Bionic

    motorola startac?

  • njr1418

    just got switched on yesterday

  • PuzzleShot

I’d say RAZR HD or RAZR MAXX HD except the logos are in the wrong positions based on Motorola’s press shots.

  • Charlie

    Blackberry Q10!!!! What do I win?? :)

    • Bionic

      too skinny

    • EC8CH

      A Blackberry Q10!!!!

      Wah… Wah….

      • Bionic

        lol, punishment

      • XvierX

        We’ve been Viva Movil’d

        • Kyle

          No it’s we’ve been “J-LO’d”

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      Yep. :)

      • Charlie R.

Yay!! Have you used it on any kind of regular basis yet? My wife was seriously considering this phone because of the keyboard, but ultimately went with an Razr M. I still have an old Playbook that I’m hoping gets BB10 as promised.

  • Finire

    I voted yes… But barely.

  • Justin Halcomb

I thinking about switching to Sprint for my services.

    • Bionic

dont, anyone i know who has sprint loves their prices but hates their network.

my buddy has a network extender in his house when a tower is only 2 miles away over flat terrain

    • xXAaronSXx

If you’re in a metro area, I’d suggest T-Mobile. There coverage, for me, has actually been better although when I travel outside of the city I get their Edge network. However, its saving me a bunch of $$$.

      • yankeesusa

If you have tmobile in your area and they are good I would pick them too. Their hspa+ speeds alone are as fast as some lte speeds. Plus they are already working on lte-a which is crazy.

    • yankeesusa

I would rethink that for now. Maybe in 8 to 12 months you could. With the softbank merger and the aquisition of clearwire sprint is looking good. But lets see if they can actually make it happen.

  • Nathaniel Newman

    Razr Ultra or X Phone!!??

  • xXAaronSXx

I was, till I took my service to T-Mobile a couple of months ago (and never looked back).

  • DMBatCOFC

That all depends on if I’m upstairs or downstairs….

  • Nathaniel Newman

Yep I have 4G LTE in my city of McMinnville, TN. But if I go too far from the city I drop down to 3G. LTE was only installed/greenlit 4/12/12.

  • http://www.bfolkers.com Brian Folkers

According to Big V, I had coverage, but couldn’t get it unless I walked a block up my street.

  • Zach Armstrong

Yes I’m covered with Verizon 4G but the speed is getting slower every time I use it Barley get above 8mbs anymore I use get 39mbs or more

    • Bionic

8MBPS should still serve you well for 99.9% of tasks

      • Ian

If only that were the point

        • Bionic

I get the point, once they are done rolling our the footprint so to speak, im sure they will work on the hardware in the background to speed things up again, not to mention get more bandwidth.

      • Zach Armstrong

Here’s the speed I’m getting right now at my home

Is that kinda of slow to you

    • Franklin Ramsey

I generally get 1-2mbs in my area. Sadly, it usually seems slower because it is always switching over to 3G.

    • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Verizon is starting to lack in speed but you can’t deny that their coverage is phenomenal compared to other carriers! I’ve not personally ever experience LTE get under 15mbs in my area but I can imagine in saturated markets that it can bottom out well below 8mbs if the tower is congested! I guess its not helping that the people with unlimited data (myself included) consume all the data they can get their hands on (sorry, its a guilty pleasure of mine lol)!

The speeds were doing great until the iCrap 5 got LTE…..

      • Zach Armstrong

There coverage is good and they do have the most LTE coverage But is it really worth it for the price

        • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Honestly yes. My family loves to take summer vacations and during the fall / winter we all go hunting in South Georgia. During our vacations to big cities, small cities and everything in between I have never once been without at least some sort of signal (always able to send SMS / or make a call) and during our hunting trips there are only a few spots even deep within the woods where I can’t get 3G / 4G! Heck, this past year we sat around a campfire watching ESPN Go on my N7 from my phone that was hotspotting from the Motorola Car dock in my truck.

Now if they took away unlimited data then it would be much harder to justify spending the extra cash but we wil cross that bridge when it comes.

          • Zach Armstrong

If you take lots of trips to rural areas then I see the point of it I don’t take a lot of trips so that doesn’t matter to me.

    • Higher_Ground

8 Mbps would be a godsend… I’m lucky to get over 1.5 Mbps on 4G

  • Jeremy_Bowling

According to the Verizon Coverage Map I should be drowning in 4G, but in reality it is VERY spotty. Some days I can get 3 bars of 4G and some days I get nothing. Very frustrating.

    • peggsie

I agree completely. I live in Summerfield, FL.
      Extremely frustrating

  • Chris Doerman

Where is the option for “I was technically covered by 4G when I last used VZW 6 mos ago, except it would constantly fall back to 3G indoors and in several surprisingly open populated outdoor areas – which is both unusable and taxing on my battery” ???
I really wish VZW 4G coverage was a yes/no question.

    • Franklin Ramsey

      This.

    • Royal Assassin

THIS…..happens to me all day, every day. I’ve always blamed my Gnex’s radios (although currently they’re much better than they were when I bought the phone) but I never thought to blame Verizon…HUZZAH!

    • Cowboydroid

I USED to be covered by it. Speeds have consistently dropped to around 3G levels now.

      • Higher_Ground

Except for the rare occasion I’m standing next to a tower I’ve always gotten what would be normal 3G speeds. A whopping 1.15 Mbps down / 0.27 Mbps up right now.

    • michael arazan

VZW was Great for the first 6 Months, speeds of 15 down and 10 up, then dropped to 12/6, 10/4, now down to 8/2 for lte. My wifi blows away lte now, all with a GNex.

      • FAL_Fan

What speeds are you getting from your wifi?

  • Col_Angus

As of last week, yes, but only within a 2 mile radius of my apartment

  • lang

Need a choice for “partial” as in I occasionally have 4G. It’s almost like it is turned off and on at random.

  • mplacido9

I’m in a LTE area however the speeds have gone down hill and are much slower than when it first launched. I switched to prepaid T-Mobile and I get faster speeds on HSPA+. Plus my battery lasts longer now.

  • http://www.pcprocare.com/ Barry Taylor

500ft around my neighborhood has LTE. We are in a hole.

    • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

Thats pretty much me as well

  • Ryan Batty

im supposedly covered but i get no lte signal inside the house

  • EC8CH

Galaxy S4 with a carbon fiber backplate?

edit: I take that back as it’s a horrible guess.

    • Bionic

      that exists?

      • EC8CH

        does the x phone???

        I keed I keed

        • Bionic

LOL, we have pictures, that has been proven now

      • Franklin Ramsey

Give it a couple weeks and I’m sure Samsung will have it out as another variant.

  • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

I need a ‘sotra’ radio button. Technically I am. But its really flaky. We bought a 4G LTE booster to get the signal stronger inside the house

    • Blue Sun

Would a “sorta” button work better?

      • LionStone

Thanks, a bit jet lagged and I could not figure out what the hell he meant :-)

        • Blue Sun

No problem. Took me a minute too. I just took a guess That it was a typo.

  • Bill Hill

    Covered in bills, yes

    • BaconEater
      • Sqube

I wasn’t prepared for what happened when I clicked too quickly.

    • Richard Yarrell

Coverage that’s sadly overrated and totally saturated with bogged down slow LTE. Speed started drastically slowing down in Apr/May/June 2012 today it’s pitifully slow. Of course on Droid-life this is the Verizon and stock android fanboy central. Piss on Verizon they suck monkey balls.

      • squiddy20

And yet T-Mobile is, at this very moment, trying to roll out its own LTE network, which will be “totally saturated” and “bogged down” as more customers use it in the coming months/years. What a moron.

        • Brandon Golway

Not if they prepare for it properly!

      • Bam

Says the guy who deep throats Samsung on an hourly basis. Love how you derisively refer to the community as fanboys when you yourself routinely bomb Moto or HTC threads to profess your undying devotion to Samsung. Oh, I’ve seen you do it on Android Central as well. Get bent, and good day.

        • Tyler

You should have seen him back in the day when he was sucking Sprints balls squeaky clean. This guy literally thought sprint was the best thing next to sliced bread.

          • tomn1ce

He should take his Note 2 and go back to his corner

      • SpikedRed

Hey DICK, I know it’s hard being a troll, but take it easy on Droid-Life, will ya? This is just a poll. For a techno-blog-site, DL is pretty damned fair when it comes to bias and definitely has had some bad things and good things to say about Verizon.

I live in a po-dunk town that has no business having LTE, but fortunately, I do. I also use about 30GB on average per month of data unlimited on my phone. I’ve never received a hassle from Verizon about it and am content with the fact that I at least have the service, when I need it.

It is true that the speeds did slow down for me, but they have recently picked back up. If the speeds are horrible on your phone, you might want to focus your anger at the right place: Verizon. Seriously, call them.

        • Brandon Golway

HAHAHA I love the “dick” double entendre.

      • Tyler

And you’re not a fanboy???? You are a complete Samsung fanboy, you used to be a Sprint fanboy(glad you finally saw how bad they suck). You’re no better then any of us stock verizion fanboys that apparently flood DL.

      • Dominick White

Man, not this bull sh×t again. I rather deal with Verizon crap and have service, than pay t-mobile price for unusable service

      • treflip

Delete this guy off this site. Your acting like a liitle girl. Go get a cricket phone dumb ass.

      • Geoff Johnson

Don’t listen to the others, Verizon’s network is pitifully slow. I’m lucky to get the advertised 5-12Mbps down.

    • jose

CAN I UPVOTE A COMMENT WITHOUT HAVING THE STUPID BOX POPUP THAT SHOWS WHO UPVOTED???? GEEZUS Fu#(*#$*(kdkjdkj%+)#*(@+#$)589

      Yes, I’m mad bro.

      • Brandon Golway

It’s not so bad on the desktop but on tablets/phones it’s really fu*&^&# annoying!

    • tomn1ce

Covered by vzw 4G LTE and taking full advantage of it all day everyday…

  • jaybar

    Yes*

*Based on their coverage maps but I get maybe a bar of 3g, welcome to my dead zone

  • DS

Where is the “I have coverage but it sucks because the network is always over loaded.”

  • brkshr

Excellent idea for a poll, with VZWs latest claims.

  • Bionic

    x phone

    • Thomas

I was gonna steal your thunder, but knew you would be along shortly ;)

      • Bionic

since he hasnt commented on my answer, im pretty im right

        • Dingodeo

          UR SEW RONG! hahahahahahahhahaha.

  • Bionic

Meanwhile over at vivid.com the thursday poll is for the ladies only and titled “are you covered in……”

  • 4n1m4L

RAZR ultra? Is Kellex under an NDA again?

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

No NDA at all. It’s a real phone already available.

      • Bionic

based on the round corners its gotta be a N4 or S4

        • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

I don’t know of an N4 that works on Verizon. :P

          Also, not the S4.

          • Bionic

true, hmmmm. is it a DNA?

          • LionStone

With the Carbon Ghost Armor maybe, but the speaker is down at the bottom on the DNA :-)

          • Thomas

Your killing me, just tell us already ;)

      • 4n1m4L

Oh, well then its a RAZR HD.

  • Molly Housel

I’m in Boston and the 4G coverage here has severly declined in the last 4-6 months

  • wills96

Its a rare time I have both a 4G connection and a battery thats not dead…

    • r0lct

      I’m guessing you have a GNex…

      • wills96

        Wow you must be psychic.

        • r0lct

Or a former gnex owner with spare batteries still laying around somewhere

  • JsinLegacy

Even tho their coverage map states i am in a LTE enabled town my phone and every one else on Verizon here is on 3G

    • Yep

I think they are playing some word games here re: the 99% coverage. A lot of that 4G is in the “4G Extended” color code when you start drilling down into the map. I don’t know what the 4G Extended necessarily means, but since they feel the need to point it out on the coverage map, it tells me that it’s not “full” LTE or something. Preemptive tip of the hat to whomever will set the record straight.

      • Diablo81588

Extended coverage means you’re on the outskirts of the coverage area. You might get a signal, you might not. Indoor coverage will most likely be spotty.

  • Thomas

Its BA what ever it is.
