Motorola CEO Confirms the Moto X Phone, Will Build It in Texas (Updated)

dennis woodside

Dennis Woodside, Motorola’s new CEO, just confirmed in an interview at D11 that they are indeed making a phone called Moto X. He said that the phone will be the first smartphone built in the U.S. “We’re building it in Texas,” Woodside mentioned during his sitdown. They are going to employee about 2,000 people outside of Forth Worth at a 500,000 square foot facility to make the magic happen.

This is their “hero device,” and it’s going to be “broadly distributed.” Between now and October, Motorola is going to launch a handful of devices though, but way down from the massive portfolio of years past.

Woodside even claimed to have one of the phones with him on stage, though he said he wasn’t able to show it. But should he have decided to pull it out, he mentioned that with new sensors, that the phone anticipates your needs. For example, it would recognize that he took it out from his pants and potentially wake itself or activate a service.

When asked if he was confident in whether or not Motorola could actually move the needle with new products, Woodside said that the “products we are going to ship throughout the fall. They are unlike other things out there.”

While this is mostly an assumption on my part, the first of the handful of devices he mentioned will be the XFON (XT1056, XT1058, and XT1060) that has popped up in pictures, in benchmarks and at the FCC. It will be a mid-to-low range device that will be distributed everywhere at an incredibly low price. Then during the holidays, we’ll see the hero device.

Update:  According to Motorola, the Moto X will arrive in late summer.

Thoughts? What’s up Bionic?

Great the moment I buy a new phone “nexus 4″ I see this -_- oh well . . . wow me Moto and I’ll will rejoin you once again.

  • r0lct

Death to DROID, long live Moto

  • buddyruff777

From my way better than I expected but had to buy on a budget after I destroyed my LG OG Motorola Atrix HD…I say I will look hard at the top end Moto phone when my contract renewal comes up…so I hope they bring a real contender to the game.

  • AC

    YYYEEESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

  • Keith taylor

Still waiting for the day we can build custom phones with what we the consumers want.

    • Chris

the nerds will get mad when they add parts that are not comperable with each other…. then again the nerds wil be the only ones who do this. Average joe is fine with what ever they get….

  • jbdan

I owned a Bionic for one week….only moto device I’ve experienced (HTC & Samsungs). Love my GS4, but won’t have any problem letting it go for this!

no need for the silly cartoons kid.

      • RadicalPie

        Ummmm definitely a need…

  • EvanTheGamer

    Great. Just great.

  • Bionic

I will comment further but I personally believe that we’re looking at a redesign of the quoted hero X phone and that is why we’re looking at a later release the mini x phone is just to get the market salivating

    • Jack Hoffman

Kind of thought something like this would happen when that “google abandons xphone” rumor came out from that Chinese “insider”

  • Bionic

haha way to call me out Kellex anyway yes this is what I have been forwarding You guys from Sarge for many months now. I get off work in a couple hours so give me a chance to get home and I will comment further

    • droidrazredge

oh there he is =p. Guess he did not jump of the Golden Gate Bridge after all

    • motomaniac

what do you know about Artic Fox????

    • bakdroid

So I thought you said it was all BS and Google pulled the plug and you were buying an S4. Now you say you were telling us this the whole time. Someone doesn’t know what blog…I mean insider…they want to “leak” this time around.

      • Bionic

Oh trust me I still may.

        • James_75

Not sure why anyone would judge you poorly if you do. I sold my DNA to get an S4 on VZW and plan to just sell it if the X turns out to be the real deal.

    • Hungry Hamburger

So since Motorola is pushing for a later date, does that mean we might get to see the Snapdragon 800 in the X Phone?

      ugh

      • droidrazredge

        LOLOLOL this made my evening.

  • EC8CH

This could turn out epic like the OG Droid…

    Or epic like the Bionic.

    • PhoenixPath

      “Or epic like the Bionic.”

What’s the extra “the” for? :-)

      • Brendan Small

        “Or epic like Bionic.” Lrn2Englsh

        • PhoenixPath

          Can you say, “woosh”?

    • radiohead14

i truly hope it’s got a camera as good or better than the S4

  • droidrazredge

Makes me wonder if Bionic was dissing Motorola on purpose to get our hopes down because “Sarge” told him that the X-phone would be lights out for every other
phone manufacturer because of it being a game changer. Bionic, knowing this and being the troller at heart that he is, was basically making us feel bad about Motorola because he knew that Motorola would be dropping Bombs soon. He had no intentions what so ever of coping-out and getting a S4 at all.

    • Bionic

no there are plenty of things going on at Motorola right now that I really dislike

  • motomaniac

I could tell you all more about it, but i’d have to kill ya….

  • Chad

Deep down, we all want an awesome device from Moto. I mean, they’re the ones that started this beautiful thing called anDROID!!

    • cb2000a

Well actually HTC started it, but it took the Droid to bring it to the masses. Still have my OG Droid.

  • Geoff Johnson

    Maybe that’s Sarge O.o

    • droidrazredge

Could Sarge == Dennis Woodside ? Now the plot thickens…..

      • Hungry Hamburger

That’s not the only thing that thickens if you know what I mean… ;)

        • WickedToby741

          To far…

    Bionic, where are you?!?!?

  • thedonxr

    Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!! Its real!!!!!

The best piece of news that I heard from this whole article is not the fact that the X-Phone is indeed superior to anything we have seen before but the fact that the phone will be made in the US. We need more companies to adopt this idea because outsourcing is a cheap and cop-out that many tech companies do. This not only hurts the employment workforce of the US, but the economic system of the US. We need more of the manufacture back in the US and not outsourced to China, Indonesia, and Taiwan. GJ Motorola, maybe this is what will be needed to show other companies that products can be made in the US without having to use cheap labor in other countries.

    • Ian Smith

amen. apple has more than enough capital to develop manufacturing plants here in the states but they still cop it all out overseas to foxconn. that infuriates me. this will probably mean a higher priced device from motorola though but i will gladly pay the premium.

      • michael arazan

It’s about time for American Business’ to invest in the United States again.

These corporations ship jobs over seas, hide their money over seas, pay 2%-0% in tax loopholes (Apple paid 2% in taxes last year on 35 billion dollars in profits), but want to live here for our security and freedoms.

These corporations need to pay their fair share in taxes and jobs or GTFO

        • Ian Smith

          2% is ludicrous!

      • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

A big part of the problem is China has a lock on rare earth metal mining, and will only sell it to companies that manufacture with it in the country. Rare earth metals aren’t actually rare, but only China’s dirt cheap labor can mine it profitably.

        • Ian Smith

had no idea – interesting. thanks.

        • Tim Cartwright

Not quite true. We have a ton of rare earth metals here in the US, but mining for them is quite destructive to the environment. Hence the “lock” that China has on rare earth metals. Which is why the US refuses to to do what China does. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/sep/26/rare-earth-metals-technology-boom

          • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

The metals aren’t rare, they are both as you pointed out destructive, but also very labor intensive to mine. Everytime a competitor tries to rise up China just drops the price so low that they eventually go out of business.

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rare_earth_element

“Despite their name, rare earth elements (with the exception of the radioactive promethium) are relatively plentiful in the Earth’s crust, with cerium being the 25th most abundant element at 68 parts per million (similar to copper). However, because of their geochemical properties, rare earth elements are typically dispersed and not often found concentrated as rare earth minerals in economically exploitable ore deposits.”

    • Higher_Ground

In all fairness, aside from Apple, all of the other manufacturers aren’t American. LG and Samsung are Korean, HTC is Chinese.

      • endurotech

        HTC is Taiwanese

    • JoshGroff

If I wasn’t already planning on buying it, this would sway my decision.

    • Bigwavedave25

I agree with you 100%. But it all has to do with being able to manufacture a product at a competitive cost. US manufacturing is more expensive, period. Motorola needs to be able to have a product selling price that covers mfg plus profit margin while hitting a price point that keeps the product competitive in the market. Maybe just the X will be US made because of a higher margin and the XFON will be made elsewhere.

But very glad to hear about the prospect for US production!!

  • Chezitman

It better have onscreen buttons! I’m looking at you HTC!

    • Tyler

RAZR hd and RAZR m both have on screen keyboards and since Google is pushing on screen I doubt that it would have physical.

      • Chezitman

That’s correct. But like the HTC, I’m not sure why they went against onscreen and towards physical. I’m just hoping they go the correct way and not a step back…Fingers crossed on this one.

        • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

HTC has a disturbing history of pretending on screen buttons don’t exist. But, on the HTC One I think they simply didn’t have room to pull the screen down over the physical buttons.

    • Geoff Johnson

The problem with the current RAZR M and HD is that even though it has onscreen buttons, it still has that huge bezel at the bottom. If you are going to remove physical and capacitive buttons, at least make the bezel smaller.

  • BigMixxx

    OMG!

X phone coming…note to self, no lapdances while x phone is in pocket.

    ok.

  • Kyle Cordiano

Great it is being built in the US, now give us some damn information.

  • J PARKER

    YES HELL YES

  • tharealoc

    Cue Bionic in 3…….2……..1……

    haha….really though…OMG!

  • shdowman

So, from what I have “heard” is that this will be the first phone that is like a computer. Meaning that you will be able to upgrade processor, ram, etc over the life of the phone.

    Don’t shoot the messenger..

    • finch300

      in your dreams

      • shdowman

Only what I heard…not saying whether it is true or feasible. I gain nothing by typing that.

    • bose301s

Just way too hard, unlike the PC world the phone isn’t standardized. Exynos vs. Snapdragon vs. Tegra all use different pinouts, voltages, etc. And everything changes from one generation to the next basically, not like Intel and AMD who use a standard socket for multiple generations of chips.

      • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

It would be like all those laptops that had “upgradeable” GPUs. Sure you could swap it out…but newer GPUs never used the same socket.

    • EvanTheGamer

      This will never happen ever.

      *shoots the lying messenger*

      lol

  • Franklin Ramsey

Woodside: “I’ll save the details for later, but you’re correct that battery life is a huge problem. Motorola has some of the world’s best engineers and systems designers who spend their lives on that problem. There are two processors in the device that creates a system that allows you to do such a thing.”

Two processors? Now I am wondering if one is dedicated to supporting battery life? That could be interesting.

    • bose301s

Probably a big.LITTLE Cortex A15 then, basically 2 processors in one, A15 architecture for heavy lifting and A7 for power saving.

      • http://twitter.com/jkc120 Josh Carroll

Yup, so pretty much what the S4 with Exynos is doing…

        • bose301s

Not pretty much, exactly what the Exynos in the S4 is doing.

          • WickedToby741

What interests me is that’ll this sounds like they may be designing their own processors instead of using someone else’s.

          • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

That doesn’t interest me, it horrifies me.

      • Franklin Ramsey

I realize that is what it probably is, but that isn’t what he made it sound like. Technically the Cortex A15 is considered one processor. He made it sound sort of like there is a processor controlling the battery or functions of anything requesting power. I would guess it is Cortex A15 style though.

        • bose301s

There are always power management ICs in the phone, no matter who makes it,

          • Franklin Ramsey

I know there are ICs, but ICs aren’t always a processor of sorts. I guess I am harping on the fact he said there are two processors in it to control battery life.

  • Franklin Ramsey

Also, he is saying other phones/products will be released before the Moto X is released.

  • Qwerty

I cannot even begin to describe how restless I’m becoming waiting for this device to be officially released. My GNex has been acting up and although my contract will not expire for another year, I am willing to pay retail price for a new device. I’m not entirely sold on the S4 and although the One isn’t on Verizon, I don’t think I’d be entirely sure if I’d be content with it. Show me what my options will be Moto!

    • Scott

Exactly how I feel. Please have a reasonable off-contract price so I don’t have to sacrifice unlimited data!!!

      • Qwerty

        I can’t wait until October though… :(

      • DirtyDenim

        DO NOT DO IT.
Let them pry it from your COLD DEAD HANDS.

  • Hungry Hamburger

    But but… It’s a unicorn phone

  • EC8CH

    Bionic call out…. Awesome!

  • ddevito

Did anyone catch what he said about this phone being contextually aware of its surroundings? I must say I’m intrigued.

I want a stock, cheap(er), motorola android phone with a kickass radio and sparkling battery life.

  • finch300

    remember…..he is getting the gs4

    • Fozzybare

oh really? i didnt see that. damn

      • Dylan Patel

Yeah, he lost hope in the rumors so he covered his ass by saying he didn’t want to wait.

        • nvitone23

not true at all…nice try buddy

          • Dylan Patel

That is exactly what originally. Do you remember what he claimed originally and the more recently?

          • nvitone23

Let me clear this up for everyone… its not that he “lost hope in the rumors” on the x phone because to us, they aren’t rumors, they are facts…what he did lose hope in is the state of Motorola and whether they will collapse and his future phone will not be supported…THAT is why he is considering switching…you don’t have to try and tell me what is going through his mind because we are both “in the know” and communicate about these things very often

          • Dylan Patel

            Nice try Bionic.

          • Dylan Patel

            Nice Try Bionic

          • finch300

soon he will reply from his gs4

        • droidrazredge

I wonder if Bionic did that on purpose to get our hopes down because “Sarge” told him that the X-phone would be lights out for every other phone manufacturer because of it being a game changer. Bionic was basically making us feel bad about Motorola because he knew that soon Motorola would be dropping Bombs. He had no intentions of coping-out and getting a Samsung at all.

          • MicroNix

I’d like to see a Moto comeback like that, but lights out for every other phone manufacturer? Not a chance. You heard it here first. Just like the previous hypebeast, I’m betting nothing more than a common 2013 phone with maybe one new feature. Samsung is so far ahead of Motorola right now in *features* that it would take one hell of a game changer to change public opinion about Samsung products and convince people to defect to Motorola.

        • tomn1ce

Maybe he hasn’t pull the trigger yet on the GS4 and is going to wait for the Moto X specs to be officially announced…

  • Chris

Unrelated: is Disqus not working for anyone else?

    • Tyler

Yeah I cant even post anything.

  • Chahk Noir

I really hope Woodside doesn’t throw away the baby with the bathwater during his googlifying of Motorola. As terrible as (most of) their devices were in the past, some things like fingerprint scanner and lapdock of Atrix for example, were actually innovative enough to warrant a second chance.

    • EC8CH

Just make a decent phone first before worrying about things like lapdocks.

      • Chahk Noir

That goes without saying. If Motorola is to have any chance against Samsung in the marketplace, it need to differentiate their phones. Un-skinned Android will only take them so far. I strongly feel that solid hardware is the way to beat Sammy here. Big battery, pentaband GSM w/LTE (maybe even a concurrent launch with CDMA variants,) lots of internal memory (32/64 GB versions) and an SD Card slot are a good start. Once you have that, throw in a few bells and whistles like Samsung does with S/Note lines.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Well he did say they are relaunching the product line so I’m assuming XFON is one of the devices. But I’m pretty sure we can expect MOTO to launch a HALO device on Verizon.

  • Chris Schmucker

    Girlfriend: “Why are you crying?”
Me “Its real…..its really real (sob)”

  • trophynuts

soooo….it has a pants sensor.. sweet

    • Franklin Ramsey

Got to detect what is going on in your pants…

      • michael arazan

And then takes picture and post it to twitter and facebook automatically, perfect for football stars and congressmen

    • sonicyoof

It knows what you want… in your pants.

  • nvitone23

Now let me see those apologies to my buddies Bionic and Sarge! I told you so…

  • Franklin Ramsey

He is currently talking it up as if it will rival the S4 or the HTC One.

    • chris125

Well unless it comes out soon, that isn’t really anything special. IF it doesn’t release until later by then HTC will be on the One 2 lol

      • Franklin Ramsey

True. I’m surprised they way he is talking it up. Things like how users will interact with it are very different than the way rivals do it, and it will know what you want to do before you do. Almost creepy.

        • rodney11ride

          I like creepy…

          • Franklin Ramsey

I’m liking Google Now and that can be sort of creepy sometimes.

        • chris125

If it can do half of what he says well I will be surprised. but at least now all the rumor sites will have lots of materials for “rumors” to kick up until this device actually launches.

        • Higher_Ground

I like that, the “HTC 1-2″

      • Justtyn Hutcheson

October is apparently their general time-frame, which is about right since that’s a year since their last flagship.

That said, I’m hoping they will be one of the first out of the gate with the S800, or even one of the new Bay Trail processors. That, along with a ridiculously good screen and a huge battery/super-long battery life will go a loooooong way towards making a great many users very very very happy.

One thing though: ditch the Maxx, and just make the slightly thicker phone with the insanely huge battery. 4000 mAh MINIMUM Moto. Make it happen :-P

    • bose301s

Glad to hear it, my contract with Verizon expires on December 15 so I will be looking into all carriers and phones then, hopefully this one will be awesome.

  • chris125

I am interested to see what they unveil, hope they don’t disappoint though. It is going to be hard to live up to all the hype and rumors but I think Googlerola can do it

  • Trevor

Actually, he’s been hating on this phone all of a sudden based on what I’ve seen. It was pretty funny how quick a turnaround he made.

    • nvitone23

because if this phone can’t save this company, nothing will and they WILL get bought out…

      • calculatorwatch

        They already are bought out…
I don’t get what you’re saying. Sure Moto might remain structurally separate from Google but you know they still have access to their mountains of cash if they need it. The worst case scenario is that Google takes over operations and restructures everything, but aside from pissing off Samsung, HTC, etc, that wouldn’t be so bad.

        • nvitone23

Yes, but if they fail under Google, Google will not take over for them…they will likely get sold to Samsung…lots of reasons why but not gonna get into them…sarge has mentioned this

          • http://twitter.com/nedrudrelytmai Tyler Durden

Motorola is useless. Nobody would buy them.

  • Rene Barba

    Bring on the leaked photos!

    • EC8CH

I’d love to see the hero device assuming it isn’t the xfone we’ve already seen (which I think looks pretty sweet for a mid tier device)

  • Trevor

Beautiful! As long as it doesn’t suck

  • nb

“Motorola has always been good at managing power on the device but also at different sensors. The new phone will know when you take it out of your pocket, for example.”

    BRING IT ON MOTO X

  • Franklin Ramsey

He also just said it should be coming out around October.

  • rodney11ride

built in the u.s….. workers from oversees, parts from oversees… big deal they found a warehouse under foreclosure… lol

    • Trevor

      Baby steps

      • rodney11ride

i know… i couldnt resist trying to poke fun at it… hey im all for it being built here… if they can keep the cost down

        • Trevor

Haha yeah I figured. I’m all about made in the US as well, as long as it works and isn’t super expensive vs being manufactured elsewhere.

          • ToxMarz

Hopefully they thought to install the suicide nets to catch the jumpers, cause if they ain’t jumping we’re paying too much.

          • PhoenixPath

So not politically correct…but funny as hell.

    • Franklin Ramsey

Well he said about 70% of the components are made overseas. That is better than nothing considering a number of the components simply aren’t made anywhere else.

      • TheWhiteLotus

He said 70% of the phone will be made in the US, not overseas.

      • Josh

That’s not what he said. He said that 70% of the phone will be made in Texas. The complete opposite of what you said.

        • Franklin Ramsey

I am sorry, I was listening to the live blog at work. Hard to focus on doing my job and listening to possibly my dreams coming true at the same time.

    • Josh

Dennis Woodside, the CEO, said that it will be made with parts from the US. Either way, its better than a phone made in China.

    • Ian Smith

don’t you dare tell me why i’m down voting you.

  • Steve

    now im definitely getting one..
