Video: Testing Out Google’s Conversational Search in Chrome

google search

If you are a Chrome user on your desktop computer, be sure to update to the newest version that was released this morning as it includes Google’s new conversational search. We first saw conversational search at Google I/O last week in one of the more impressive demos from the keynote, and have been waiting for its release.

For those not familiar, conversational search allows you to search for items as if you are having a conversation with your computer and Google Search. You aren’t supposed to worry about using specific keywords or commands – instead you should be able to casually ask for search results. All of the magic happens as you speak to Google Search, but it becomes incredibly impressive once you follow-up initial questions with secondary questions, just as if you were having a conversation with someone. For example (also in the clip below), you can ask for the age of a professional basketball player and then follow that question up by asking which team they play for. If Google’s new search works properly, it should answer both, but the second shouldn’t require you to say their name again.

It also works if you want to track packages, check on upcoming flight times, search nearby restaurants, and even find the distance from your location to a place you have recently searched for. It’s impressive.

At this time, it’s missing the “OK, Google” activation command, but will likely arrive before long.

  • TechGuy22

  • Steve

    Google is an amazing company!!!

  • beyerku

So many easter eggs: ask it “what’s your name?” and “what’s my name?” and “who are you?”

  • Steve Benson

    Do a barrel roll!

  • valapsp

Kellex I can see your email when you’re scrolling down. BE ADVISED!!!

  • usaff22

The query “How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood” gets you a funny reply.

  • huskerhog

I gave always been able to click on the speaker symbol in Google Search to use voice input . What is different about this update?

    • Hoffman

It’s not that you can talk through the mic in your pc, it’s the way that you can speak without having to use specific keywords and that it recognizes previous search subjects.

  • Wyveryx

I like this feature and can’t wait for the voice activation…can’t help it, I’m lazy! So far though I haven’t been able to hear any responses…
I wonder if I have some 3rd party extension getting in the way

how do u get it to work

    • huskerhog

In Chrome go to Menu (top right) and go to About Google Chrome. Click it and if you are not up to date it will give you an option to update.

  • Austin Mutschler

Mine doesn’t have the hot words like yours does.

  • Shawn

Too bad I have to hit “allow” every single time I want to use this feature. This needs to be changed.

    • Austin Mutschler

I hit allow once and it works all the time.

  • lye

It kinda sucks. Needs a lot of work. I can’t even replicate the example in the video.

  • yodatom10

I have to click “allow” to use microphone EVERY single time I try voice search. Shouldn’t Chrome remember my preference to this permission?

You shouldn’t have to. It only asked me once.. Strange

    • NexusMan

It never asked me. Something must be off in your settings.

Apple decided to add google now to they there list of infringements. http://androidcommunity.com/apple-claiming-google-now-infringes-on-siri-patents-20130522/

  • Myk Robinson

If anybody cares, the “do a barrel roll” trick works with the browser too :)

    • http://twitter.com/Alankrut Alankrut Patel

First thing I do everytime I show off Google Now

  • MikeSaver

how do i update if i havent updated

  • hurrpancakes

I keep wanting to read it as “Google’s controversial search”

    • michael arazan

Google search is Controversial since they now censor your search by making all searches in moderate safe search or full safe search, they got rid of the option to turn safe search OFF now. This is complete BS

  • http://www.adamsneighborhood.com/ Adam Neighbors

I want conversational search on my tablet and phones too.

  • Dylan Patel

God damn, Portland seems miserable, 52 degrees F and raining.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      It is. :(

      • El_Big_CHRIS

not as miserable as Tim attending verizon’s crappy press conference

        • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Poor Tim…what a disaster that was.

        • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

Hey, I had a good time. I was laughing the whole time. I’m more upset about this heat! I wasn’t built for 90 degrees! :P

          • El_Big_CHRIS

Oh yeah, i forgot it was Vegas. I was so disappointed that there was no One announcement…

    • Damian

Not as miserable as it being 102 degrees outside of my house….

      • zurginator

Not as miserable as it being 110 in the building at work. And no, we can’t wear shorts.

  • Ben Landwehr

I want to be able to say, “Ok, Google” to my phone or tablet and Google Now pops up right away instead of going into Google Now and then saying “Google” or clicking the mic button. It’d be so much faster if you ask me, and one more thing we have over siri, not even having to press anything on our phones to do a search.

    • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Timmy

Your battery would also go faster too. lol

      • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

That’s not Google’s Now’s fault, that’s because battery technology currently sucks. Someday we won’t be limited by the battery to do the cool stuff we want.

        • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Timmy

I didn’t say it was Google’s fault. The battery life would still go down, so I doubt Google would do that.

  • Bionic_Pags

    Suck on that Siri

    • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Siri was always a great idea implemented fairly poorly. Google did it right.
