Apple Sets Eyes on Galaxy S4 and Google Now in Newest Patent Infringements Claim

siri vs google now

In what could be labeled as this year’s biggest non shocker, Apple is claiming that Samsung is violating Siri patents with Mountain View’s Google Now software. U.S. patents 8,086,604 and 6,846,959 cover technology related to Siri, a “universal interface for retrieval of information in a computer system.”

Apple is grouping these violations together with the case that is already taking place apparently, but what has us scratching our heads is how this is Samsung’s problem. It is Google that controls Google Now, not Samsung. In addition, the Galaxy S4 is also being thrown into the mix, as Apple claims Samsung’s newest device infringes on five patents.

For the time being, Google Now users won’t have to worry about a thing, as the slowly-moving court system goes through its process. This is justice.

Too bad, so sad. Apple is slipping further down that hill towards extinction,, in terms of a mobile smart device. iPhone 5! Now with a 5 on it! Buy it from us please?

  • Steve

Ugh, Im so sick of hearing about Apple lawsuits. Once again, Apple is suing because they feel one of their patents has been used without compensation. Apparently Siri is so revolutionary that the patent office felt it deserved a patent. But hmmmm….didnt Android have Siri like capabilities …like years ago. I think I am going to file a patent application to try to patent my farting capability. This way, maybe I can sue Apple and its empolyees for farting while designing their products. Or even better. I could patent a “Universal interface for wiping my a@@”. It should be easy to get a patent for that. After all, they did grant a patent to Apple for the “rectangle with rounded edges”. Once I get that patent, I can really stick it to the man. Yeah.

  • Mvrcel Lgt

This is random. Pick the most sold device, pick something you think you got a patent on -> try makin’ money = Apple

  • http://www.arthisoft.com/ Arth I-Soft

Still it’s not happened that apple copied from another and explore it with “Apple” tag in smartphone market.

  • Mchl496

    I have a patent pending…
Using a independent graphical interface to send information remotely from one computer system to another
Lol i’ll be suing a company near you very soon.

  • mightyjohn

This is why I sold my iphone, and my macbook pro is for sale.

  • eric

w hy doesn’t Google stepped in and just take away everything from Apple never download maps no YouTube no nothing suE them for photosphere witch they will somrhow copy come on Google shutting Them down .if Apple haD opportunity They would shut down Google so fast

  • joejoe5709

Ugh. I thought we were done with this type of thing. Such a waste of everyone’s time.

  • Butters619

When it comes to patent claims, it’s the OEMs fault for distributing the infringing software.

  • feztheforeigner

Welp if this patent is valid it’s not just Google Now but also Google Search, Google Maps, Yahoo Search, Bing, Ask, Wikipedia…

    Yay for vague wording Apple!
“universal interface for retrieval of information in a computer system”

    • michael arazan

Apple just pushed the button to get Google involved once they rule Samsung has nothing to do with it, and apple will have to file suit against Google or lose face, and then Armageddon for the Mobile world will begin.

    • Droidzilla

The patent is not valid. Look at the source for this article: FOSS Patents. It’s run by one Florian Mueller, who seems to love Apple and hate Google. He predicted such things as Android being destroyed by Oracle, none of Apple’s bogus patents being invalidated, etc. He’s the biggest troll on the internet when it comes to patent battles (like Apple is the biggest troll in the courtroom).

  • Timothy McGovern

Apple is mad I have a huge cock

    • cid03

Huge cock in your butt and mouth don’t count :)

      • TylerChappell

Well they do for the other two. But as we all know, you wouldn’t have responded to his comment if it wasn’t for your e-p33n envy.

  • antinorm

*cue the ‘aw jeez, not this **** again’ guy*

Just give it up already, Apple.

  • MicroNix

Come on Google, get involved and chew these morons a new apphole!

Welcome to Inception Thursday, where we put puns inside puns.

  • npooty

I wonder if Wolfram Research gets any royalties from Apple. Wolfram Alpha, afterall, is the brain behind Siri.

  • Mike

Apple is grabbing at straws, and has been for some time. A lot of “their” touch patent tech existed long before the iphone and ipad were a twinkle in anyone’s eye. Before anyone claims the Newton, Motorola had the envoy in development first…apple was just first to market.

  • Simon Belmont

Nice try. “A universal interface for retrieval of information in a computer system.” That could mean just about anything. So vague and generalized.

These cases are a waste of taxpayer’s money. This is a good indication that patent reform needs to happen as soon as possible.

    • Mike Hilal

Judge Koh should make them narrow the definition. If not, I’m going to patent a gas….78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 1% various other gasses. I’m gonna sue anyone that tries to breathe it without paying me a royalty.

      • T_Dizzle

That’s a great idea! Make sure the patent office thinks you’re an apple employee.

  • ParksDekle

I thought Apple already sued Samsung and Google over “universal interface for retrieval of information in a computer system” with the Galaxy Nexus. Not to mention wouldn’t any computer search function be considered that. Apple is just mad that Google Now is more functional than Siri.

    • NexusMan

Google Now, Google, Galaxy S 4, and Samsung itself are all more functional…than what Apple has to offer.

  • Maximus

Apple is doing this because Samsung raised the price on the internal components Apple was buying from them. (CPUs IIRC) So this is payback for forcing them to seek out a cheaper vendor or spend funds. Interestingly enough…the host of other phones running JB with Google Now aren’t being sued.

    • Stewie

Ok, lets say that’s true. Then Sammy should just keep raising the price – Apple wil have to go shop to another supplier, in the meantime Sammy sells units, Apple doesnt. Still stupid on Apple’s part as now is not Sammy’s stuff, and Apple just doesn’t have the stones to try a lawsuit on google.

  • Finire

And the award for the most general patent that should never be enforceable goes to Apple! Congrats!

  • Tyler

If your going to be that guy and sue someone at least sue them for their stuff not other peoples.

    • NexusMan

LOL. Good point! How the hell did the app get approve on the Apple appstore if it violates patents? LOL. I guess, maybe their inferior version doesn’t infringe their “supposed” patents.

  • kraig109

What I think is funny here is the screen shot. I tested it, that is the real response from Siri. “Or Ever.” Seems a little bitter if you ask me. Sad

    • MicroNix

I find it disturbing that you own an iOS device to even test it on.

      • MichaelSammler

I love iOs devices. But I prefer flexibility of Android on a phone. Everyone is making great products for different people right now. But I only see the lawsuits as bringing up prices of products I love.

  • monkey082506

Does Siri use Apple search or Google search to comeback with her answers? What’s Apple search you may ask….exactly.

    • Flyinion

I don’t know, if Siri was using Google she might actually come back with a useful answer………………………….

    • npooty

Siri uses Wolfram Alpha. Siri does nothing but query Wolfram Alpha then display/speak the results. Nothing revolutionary about Siri. Just go to Wolfram Alpha and ask it the same questions. You’ll get the same type of answers.

Without Stephen Wolfram, Siri would be nothing. The guy is a genius, graduated from Caltech with Ph.d at age 20…. nuts!

      • NexusMan

EXCEPT for dumb ass snarky answers like the one pictured above. Those, useless, bitter responses are programmed in directly by Apple.

        • npooty

Are you referring to my answer? How is it dumb, snarky, and bitter? All I did was state fact and give credit and praise to Dr. Wolfram. His research is leading the way for algorithms.

  • SKG

this is pathetic.. i say bring on more lawsuits by apple .. they’re just digging their own graves right next to that cracker jobs :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Randy-Bobandy/100001646732960 Randy Bobandy

Crapple, the company that does not innovate, only litigates.

  • Jason James

doesn’t siri rely on google? i should patent breathing through the nose while sleeping!

    • T_Dizzle

      Also a good idea.

  • Eric

The reason they cant/wont sue Google is because Google isn’t actually charging anything for these products…meaning they aren’t directly making any financial gain. It is the companies like Samsung/Moto/ect that are selling the devices, which include Android.

    • tomn1ce

How about all the Nexus devices that Google has sold and the phone that Motorola has sold. I’m pretty sure that Google is not selling those devices at a loss…

      • Eric

Those Nexus devices are not made by Google…Other companies, like Asus, makes them…and Google just happens to sell them. Meaning that Asus would be the company, in that scenario, to take the fall.

        • tomn1ce

I know that but they made those devices for Google…They didn’t just made them and gave them to Google for free…

          • brkshr

No, but Google damn near gives them to us at cost. If you put everything together, hardware, employee’s time, manufacturing costs, support costs… I’ll bet Google breaks even.

          • Eric

Nobody said anything about free…Google just happens to be the one that sells them, and they probably get a cut.

Its just like Amazon…they don’t get all the product they sell for free…they just are the storefront for them.

  • Jroc869, Nexus-Life

What a bunch of ass clowns

  • Jeremy

I grunt when I take a crap. Can I patent that??

    • Simon Belmont

Take some fiber. It’ll help smooth things out.

Grunt no more, friend. Grunt no more.

      • KG

        Would Google Fiber help?

        • gp126904

Tremendously, those fast internet speeds really flush out your system.

        • Simon Belmont

Hahahaha. That was the best response that could have possibly happened.

Thanks, man. That literally made me laugh out loud.

    • Rabid Rotty

Nope, I already have the patent for that

  • shooter50

Apple is gay….maybe not politically correct, but freakin gay!!!!

  • Rawkit

Apple is mad that not only is Google Now better, but so is every Android device now being released mainly to include the S4

  • Michael Brown

    Apple is getting scared :3

  • Tony G.

    dont hate, innovate

  • Bionic

I thought a truce was called? GO FUCKK YOURSELF, APPLE.

  • SkylaC90

I’ve been wondering this for a long time now but, If Google removed all of there products from ios, How long do ya think i’d take for apple customers to defect to Android and how many do you think would actually leave?

    • Bob G

Longer than you would think, and not many. Google knows this and that is why they still remain on there. Money still makes the world go round.

  • El_Big_CHRIS

I guess it has been a while since Apple’s patent trolling has been on the news

“universal interface for retrieval of information in a computer system.”…wouldn’t that pretty much be any search engine?

    • http://twitter.com/AllanMcGraw Allan McGraw

Don’t you know Apple owns the internet?

      • tomn1ce

correction crapple owns everything that has to do with computing…. -_-

        • fauxshizzl

Don’t for get they also own all basic geometric shapes like rectangles, and also things with rounded edges.

      • Rabid Rotty

        I thought Al Gore did….LOL

    • N8shon

Exactly, sounds to me like that definition itself is a bit out-of-whack, as in RIDICULOUSLY GENERALIZED.

  • Silver Veloz

Maybe Google should retract Google Maps from Apple IOS. Or up the price.

    • feztheforeigner

Google’s aim has always been to get their services on as many devices as possible (including iOS). If they wanted to, Google could easily kill off all Apple products.

Imagine Google removing Google Search, Maps, News, Youtube, Stocks, GMail, Drive, Calendar, Talk, Voice, Translate, Google+, Wallet, etc. from all Apple products…I bet everyone is dependent on at least one of those services….

      • http://www.green-glasses.com Ian Josef Bulock

Except that would not really serve google very well. They do not actually care which device you are using their services on, they just care that you are using their services.

        • http://www.Mikereviews.co.uk/ Mike Brown

No, but imagine the problems Apple would have if Google announced that they were removing all Google apps because of Apple. People would be very angry at Apple.

Google has a lot of power. Apple need to stop fighting this. They no longer own the top spot.

    • Carl Draper

Perhaps Samsung or Google could sue Apple for ripping off Android in iOS7!

  • Capt. Crunch

Apple stop acting like a jealous 8 year-old kid and grow up.

  • gregmr

Isn’t Apple already making enough profits by hiding its money in offshore accounts under bogus companies? Why do they need a lawsuit?

    • KleenDroid

What they are doing is fully legal. They are simply using every legal means to make their tax burden smaller just like every business. Our tax system is in need of a complete overhaul.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Randy-Bobandy/100001646732960 Randy Bobandy

What they are doing may in fact be legal, but that however does not make it right. They pay an approximate 2% gross adjusted tax rate. They have the mean to find and use every loophole in the system and take advantage of it, while other small business owners such as myself have no way to do the same. I pay close to 30% in taxes as an LLC and have no way to lessen my tax burden by moving funds ‘offshore’. GE is another huge tax avoider that pays almost no taxes on billion dollars of profit. I agree that the tax system needs to be revamped (gutted actually) and I am all in favor of lower taxes, but the fact remains they are tax cheats playing by the rules setup for these mega corporations by congress via lobbyist and corruption.

        • RaptorOO7

Gut, Gut, Gut, and by the way gut the congress while we are at it. Overpaid, bloated bureaucrats who do nothing but line their pockets with donations and favors in exchange for these idiotic tax breaks.

Instead we focus on crap that isn’t actually going to do anything for the economy and do nothing about revamping the tax code. Reduce the overall corporate tax rate to a flat tax and REMOVE THE LOOPHOLES.

Oh and btw, its times to set term limits like the Republican’s promised when Newt was the Speaker of the House, YET FAILED TO FOLLOW THROUGH.

        • Cowboydroid

If you’re upset about your tax rate, complain to those who are taxing you! Better yet, vote them out! And vote in those who would allow you to keep more of what YOU earn!

It is not “moral” to pay tribute to a gang of thieves. It is not “immoral” to want to keep more of what you earn. What you earn is your property. The immoral act is confiscating that property without any recompense.

          • Justin Ardoin

Building roads, paying for defense, and taking care of the elderly is now “thievery”? You and your GOP have a lot of growing up to do.

          • Joe

            dude, shut up

          • Ben

No building roads through no bid contracts, defense sweet heart deals, and giving prescription drug benefits even to those who are perfectly able to afford on their own is thievery. I remember when welfare reform was going through kids on the street, THE BAD GOP… NEWT THE HORRIBLE… did it happen? Nope, Clinton signed it into law kicking and screaming, we also passed a balanced budget (with Clinton kicking and screaming). You libs need to understand that Govt should not spend what it does not have like us normal folks do! There is plenty areas cuts can be made in. I haven’t seen 1 cut from Obama.. not one. And please don’t point to a reduction in the growth of spending… that’s not a cut!

          • Justin Ardoin

No bid defense contracts… like the ones handed to Halliburton under Bush/Cheney? Those ones? Also, there is no way in hell you can take the 90s budgeting away from Clinton. You are revising history with red goggles on when you try to claim that the increase in taxation on capital gains and income had anything to do with Republicans. It was the first thing Bush got rid of when he hit office – and then look what happened to the budget. Republicans are no more interested in reducing the actual deficit than Democrats are. They just want to shift the burden around so the wealthy don’t have to pay for their benefits.

          • Droidzilla

Wait, so are you against no-bid contracts or for them? @6da42ef0a84ed6d6d7d4da7d1f975872:disqus is saying no-bid contracts are bad, then you bring up George Bush. What does that have to do with anything? Does this mean that you’re for them since George Bush did them? Or are you against them, in which case what’s the purpose of bringing up George Bush? Your point makes zero sense.

          • Rabid Rotty

Just remember everything is Bush’s fault. They are soon going to say The Oklahoma tornado is Bush’s fault.

          • http://twitter.com/Lancer033 Keith Hollis

believe it or not, there are plenty of us out there that didn’t like Bush and like Obama even less

          • Cowboydroid

Right, that’s all the government does…those little angels.

The Reps suck just as hard as the Dems. They both suck, stop voting for either of them.

          • Rabid Rotty

Just make sure you don’t have a tea party sign on your front lawn, the IRS will audit you quarterly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/CalebShwarez Caleb Loop

does it bother anyone else that the Front camera on that ipod tooks slightly off center?

    • Eric

What bothers me is that the iPod still exists.

  • gokusimpson

Shouldn’t they be doing it against S Voice? It’s easier to get to on the S3 or S4 anyways.

  • chris125

Funny they allow it on IOS yet since it is on samsung devices now they decide to sue. Kind of funny, at least they should have blocked it on IOS if they felt this way rather than make it so obvious that they just hate samsung.

    • 4n1m4L

We used to be friends apple!

      • Kevin Hill

Yeah, little Stevey started a lot of crap before life killed him off.

        • TylerChappell

          At least he died off.

    • tomn1ce

Apple problem may lie in that iphone users kicked siri to the curb and are now using Google Now…Maybe they’ll tell the judge that they came up with Google Now and that Samsung is not paying them licensing fee for using it… -_-

      • chris125

Ha I wouldn’t put it past apple to do that lol

    • RaptorOO7

Yet Apple is ONLY suing Samsung, no other Android partner running Google Now is being sued, in fact they are not enforcing their patent IP on their OS, or any other device mfg so that should be tossed out.

      • chris125

Agree this picking and choosing is utter BS. If I was a judge I would throw this out. I mean it is clear they are only doing it because samsung is selling phones like crazy now. I mean at least they could photoshop the pics to look the same when they were suing saying it was a rip off of IOS, this is just low, even for apple.

  • ricardo rodriguez

Apple is just that…. annoying little turd that is always jealous of everyone else.

  • http://twitter.com/expertontech Tylar Overturf

Yet they allow it on iOS…

    • paulmike3

Seriously, this. Shouldn’t they have blocked it from entering their App Store, if it copied intellectual property (per their developer agreements)? What a joke Apple has become.

  • gregmr

Apple slogan: If you can’t innovate, litigate!

    • SylvainZef

That’s true. Apple always litigate Samsung and Google. Google Now is now better but the best way to show that Siri is better is to find new features for the iPhone 6. I hope Apple will now go in this way.

      • repsylvain

        When has Apple sued Google?

        • SylvainZef

I’ve heard that. But if it’s false, Apple will probably sue Google soon lol ;)

        • Carl Draper

Almost, I think they sued Motorola which is owned by Google

  • Gary

Just as expected. If you can’t beat ‘em, sue ‘em.
