Verizon Galaxy S4 Pre-orders Now Arriving at Homes of Lucky Customers

verizon galaxy s4

If Verizon ever opens up a pre-order for a new flagship device that you are strongly considering or have already made your mind up on, jump on the pre-order. Over the last couple of years, I’ve seen pre-orders arrive early time and time again from Big Red. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is no exception, as pre-orders shipped at the end of last week and are now arriving as early as today to many. Readers of ours (as you can see by the image above) are now the “envy of everyone” they work with.

The device doesn’t officially launch until May 23.

Have you received yours? If so, we’d love to hear your initial thoughts on it!

Cheers Chris!

  • Marcy

Having massive connectivity issues with my s4 in places that I never had a problem with on my droid RAZR

  • XLR8

Got mine today as well. Had to go to Fedex myself and pick it up. Otherwise it would be delivered tomorrow. Overall it is fast… but it is overly loaded with bloatware and apps most people dont need or do not use. Waiting for the root to come out shortly after launch on the 23rd…

  • Mike

I just got mine. I haven’t even unboxed it yet. But I noticed that the box says “Phone Made in China.” I guess it doesn’t really matter but interesting….

  • Karthik

I just received mine, and the Optical Reader app is simply missing! I have been speaking to Verizon and Samsung back and forth and no one knows what’s going on! Can any of you VZW customers please confirm if you have the Optical reader app on your phone? Is anyone else facing this issue?

  • Mayra

Finally! Mine is on its way! I’m excited I should be getting it tomorrow finally, unless Verizon holds it until launch which would be disappointing. I ordered at the store do you guys think I’ll be able to get it tomorrow or will they make me wait?

  • Danny J

Is it here yet? Is it here yet? Is it here yet?

  • natedogg

i took my moms upgrade and ordered it thru her account on verizon. Once i get the phone tomorrow I’m going to activate the phone on my line which has unlimited data. I was told to do this from a VZW employyee. LOOPHOLE. stick it to the man. Suck it.

  • Jared Krinsky

Should have had mine mailed to me and not the store. -.-

    • JeffN

I also pre-ordered mine through the store, thinking they would have them earliest. So it is supposed to arrive tomorrow, they better not try to pull some BS and hold it until “launch day”.

      • Jared Krinsky

just went to the store I preordered at and they said that they will get mine in tomorrow but can’t sell it to me until Thursday. (,-.-),

        • JeffN

I already paid for mine, wonder if that will make a difference. Oh well.

          • Jared Krinsky

Mine was paid for as well except the guy didn’t let me pay for tax for some reason and said I pay that when I get the phone.

  • Daistaar

Can you be the envy of everyone you work with, when you’re about a month late to the party? Talk about fashionably late!

  • Bionic

Just got my 5 inch X Phone tester. Wow.

    • mike

      I lol’d

    • gokusimpson

Is its name “Sarge”? haha jk

    • hkklife

I know you are probably under all kinds of NDAs but can you at least hint if the initial reports suggest that it’s worth us making do with whatever device we’ve got now until September (or whenever)?

      • Bionic

        I was kidding. Sorry

        • hkklife

Dude!!! Don’t be so mean! I fell for that one
hook, line, and sinker! I was really getting ready to start saving my pennies for a full retail purchase.

          • Bionic

Sorry, i wish I had more to report but sarge simply isnt available lately. We’re hoping to hear from him soon regarding the x phone but the general feeling is that the specs simply wont match S4 or ONE.

But we can hope and pray that maybe motorola decided to change some things, lord knows they have given themselves time to do so.

  • DanSan

was suppose to get mine today… a few of us in the office ordered them all together, 1 guy already got his and the other is on the truck. mine is stuck at the fedex depot just sitting there. it had a delivery date of tonight but all of a sudden it got knocked back to tomorrow. so pissed.

    • droi_d

Mine showed in transit on the 18th, now it shows this :

ugh….got mine in the mail…love it, only problem is there is a spec of dust underneath my screen, right in the middle of the phone! Need to get a replacement already….

    • Trevor

Oh man, that sucks bad! So close, yet so far away.

  • Miltos

Mine has been sitting at FedEx in Tennessee since Saturday … grrrr!

    • chris125

How are the radios/signal? Always seemed to be a weak area for Samsung before

    • Mayra

I am jealous! Don’t get mine until tomorrow.

    • michael arazan

Too bad the HTC One isn’t on the results for comparison since they are similar in hardware. I’d bet that the sense software may or may not differentiate the results for the GS4 to be a lil bit faster

    • Chicago Porkchop

Yes, compared to the 2-3 year old devices on that graph. Congrats!

Damn, well only 2 more days for me. Good thing is, no logo on the home button. Verizon didn’t try to pull a fast one

I can see why you would say that. But I just went to bb this past week and held and played around with the s4 again and then tried the htc one and for features alone I would choose s4. Even in look I think the look on the s4 is great.

Sorry, still at work….. no idea :/ hope so though I am a S3 customer, mine was stolen but that was something I HATED. Also I have a 64 GB sandisk ultra coming in so….. :]

    Question:
Friend of mine has 2 phones on her plan. Her phone is unlimited data still and her brothers is NOT on unlimited. Her upgrade is due and wants this phone. Her brothers is not.

Can she go to verizon “transfer” her upgrade to her brother, buy the GS4 at discount price, then put the new phone back on her unlimited data and put her brothers phone back on his plan?

I know verizon wants everyone off of unlimited, will they throw a fit about this?

I’m lost about this and people here seem to know whats up. Thanks DL Community!

        • http://twitter.com/nedrudrelytmai Tyler Durden

No. You cannot transfer an upgrade I don’t think. And any upgrade will make it not unlimited I believe.

Unless they lied to me. And then they are aholes lol

You can transfer upgrades right on the Verizon site. Quit spreading fud!

    • chris125

      Yes

    • T4rd

Yup, this is exactly how I kept unlimited data with my Note 2 too! I have my mom on my account with me with a 2GB plan, so I plan on either stealing her upgrade or transferring my upgrade to her line every time I want to upgrade so I can keep unlimited data B-).

    • T4rd

Awesome….and they didn’t throw a fit? Did you have to have the other phone there with you? Her brother isn’t in town and she wants to go this weekend.

        • Mark Anthony

As I understand you can transfer your upgrade to another line.
However, when they use that upgrade they will be using it to renew their 2 year contract, so they will be out of luck until they come up for renew again.
You can transfer someone the right to upgrade/renew early, but in doing so they renew their 2 year contract with verizon. This means the next chance they should have had to upgrade will be gone, and they will not be able to upgrade for 2 years.
At least that is my understanding.

If you tell them what your doing, they MAY not let you… but they probably wouldn’t care enough to do anything. Better to just not tell them what your doing. Do it online, or simply upgrade the other account, go home swap phones, then call in an order for sim cards to fit the new phones you bought on your own, for full price, some other place (and don’t feel like showing them).

        • T4rd

My Verizon reps didn’t throw a fit. In fact, the Verizon rep I had was the one who showed me the loophole to do it. I’m not sure if you’ll need the other phone with you or not. I had a used iPhone 4 that I was giving my mom when I was there, so I created a new line for her and put the iPhone 4 on it, then he brought out a new Note 2 for me to swap the SIM into from my Gnex.

The Verizon rep told me that as long as you have a tiered data line on your account, you can keep transferring upgrades from unlimited data lines to that tiered data line, then swap phones/SIMs in order to keep unlimited data. The guy was cool as hell about it. I don’t see how they could fight you on doing this if you ask them to.
There IS a restriction if you upgrade at any other phone retailer/e-tailer outside of Verizon and then swap SIMs to other phone. Amazon Wireless would not let us transfer the upgrade online, so when I called to ask about it, they told me that if I upgraded a phone/line and swapped SIMs out of it within 6 months, then they would charge me an ETF-like fee (around $300 I think) because the way they can charge so much less than Verizon is that they have to guarantee that the line you’re upgrading will stay active with that phone for at least 6 months. So you’ll have to go to Verizon directly if you want to transfer upgrades to keep unlimited data.

          • http://twitter.com/Shrtless_Peja Shirtless_Peja

Thank you sir….I appreciate your experience!!

    • tomn1ce

I don’t think she could do that. If her brother was up for an upgrade and you wanted to buy the phone you could’ve had bought it with his upgrade and then transfer the phone to you number.

    • http://twitter.com/Shrtless_Peja Shirtless_Peja

Half say yes, half say no…..DL should do an article on this and other work arounds for contracts!!

Guess I will have to go with her and check on it.

      • DanSan

transfer the upgrade to the line without unlimited data
upgrade that line, activate the phone on that line.
turn the phone off, then activate it on your line with unlimited data.

        problem solved.

his line now has his contract extended 2 years and you now have an S4 with unlimited data.

        • http://twitter.com/Shrtless_Peja Shirtless_Peja

Then his upcoming upgrade is now void right? He will have to wait another 2 years for his upgrade to be available?

          Thanks for the reply.

          • DanSan

yup… it will be void and his contract will be renewed for 2 years.

  • ChrisDG74

My 20-month upgrade is the 23rd. Hope they still have some left.

Left Verizon yesterday. Got a t-mobile S4 (550) on Craigslist. I have high-speed wi-fi both at home and work. Never been happier.

    • mcdonsco

I don’t get why someone would already be craigslisting an S4 on any carrier? Did they miss the return window by 1-2 days?

I suppose the only reason would be they need cash…they have an upgrade, use it to get the S4 specifically to sell it to make a few hundred bucks and keep their existing phone?

      • chris125

To make a quick buck. Buy with contract then sell for profit

      • yankeesusa

Also most return windows are now 15 days. Best buy has 60 for silver members but your still tied to your contract after 15 if your with att, sprint or verizon i think.

That’s what exactly happened with this seller. He needed cash and I wanted an S4. So, he used his upgrade to make some quick buck.

  • Caleb Martin

According to FedEx package tracking, mine still hasn’t even left their Memphis, TN facility, despite having been picked up on the 18th.

    • http://twitter.com/TylerCoffinCMW Tyler J. Coffin

My package says the same thing… WTF?!? I called Verizon and FedEx yesterday, FedEx said there was a hold on the package from the sender (Verizon) and can’t be released unless the Verizon releases the package. I called Verizon and they said it has a hold because 1,800 phones went out early and they put a hold on them so they are delivered on the 22nd. I didn’t think any would arrive today and if my phone is in Memphis and I don’t get it by tomorrow, I’ll be pretty upset!

      • Steve Thornton

yep, they said the same thing to me. Verizon called fedex and put a hold notice on some orders to they arent shipped out till tonight. We should still recieve them tomorrow. The agent I talked to said it will be my county fedex in the morning out for delivery.

        • Justin Kos

I work at ups, if I knew that Verizon had did that I would have sent it on it way anyway ;)

        Grrr…

    • Tony Fortunato

      Mine shows the same way.

    • JeffN

Ok, makes more sense why I’m seeing that now. So stupid.

  • droidrazredge

I would have had my girlfriend get an S4, but with all the device problems that these first batches of S4 are having it was starting to worry me. I’m so glad she got an S3 instead otherwise she’d wish she stayed with her IPhone. To her, compared to her IPhone, the S3 is miles ahead. As long as she’s happy I’m happy. I told her she’ll still get the s4 features through the 4.2.2 update. One a side note, the switch on another line upgrade still works to keep unlimited data on your line as that is what I did for her phone.

    • chris125

      What issues?

      • droidrazredge

While adjusting the brightness in auto mode from the notification bar slide the bar turns purple to pink and screen edges inverted. The XDA thread, however, is brimming with these smearing issues on black background, too, sometimes in a more pronounced variant, to the point of ghosting text while scrolling fast, and the same purple/pink hue issue at times. Since this is a way companies trick the eye to making AMOLED appear to have better blacks, by using dark greys. I don’t think Samsung will implement a much better fix than what people at XDA have done. It is just an issue that AMOLED has.

The massive 2,600 mAh Li-Ion battery is quickly exhausted overnight, leaving less than 50 percent charge by morning.

Meanwhile, owners of 16GB Galaxy S4 handsets are finding that nearly half of the memory in their device is used by “system apps” upon unboxing. The phone notably has a number of “innovative” new features, which are supposedly designed to benefit the user experience despite taking up a considerable amount of memory, Samsung argues. The company said in a statement to CNET that the approximately 6.85GB of internal memory being used powers the Galaxy S4’s high-resolution display and other powerful apps. This leaves approximately 9GB of space free for users. Samsung is reportedly now bundling Galaxy S4 handsets with a free microSD card, according to Android Authority.

But even this may not be a solution, as many note that apps cannot be stored on the an microSD card on Android phones, only in internal memory. On the upside, those who store a lot of photos and video on their phone can take advantage of expanded memory through a
microSD. Samsung Galaxy S4 owners can also take advantage of a number of cloud storage options provided by their carriers.

        • KleenDroid

Most of what you mentioned is of little importance to me. We know how much memory it has, I don’t use auto brightness, and people saying their battery drains overnight is what is said about every new phone… lol. I have learned to form my own opinions about phones. And yes apps can be stored on a sd… Don’t believe everything you read. But that will not be needed since they don’t take much space anyway.

          • droidrazredge

Yup! I was typing without reading, what I meant to say about the internal
storage was not the issues with some stuff not being instead but the fact that
a lot of your storage is already used up. Out of 16GB you only have 6.85GB
accessible that is ridiculous to advertise one thing then you find out you are
getting less then what was advertised.

The screen issues go far more than the autobrigthness. It’s where the
background is black and there are grayish bars, scroll up and down slowly and
you will see the gray screen start to have purple smearing/smudging and you
will start to see ghosting in some of the text. To further go into detail ‘m
certain it didn’t do it on the galaxy s3. I wonder if they’re using a cheaper
screen or something. I was hoping it might be software related but I watched a YouTube
video with dark scenes and I could even see the smearing there. I went to a few
stores to test demo units and they all do the same thing. The more I think
about it the more I’m convinced it’s not a software thing, it just doesn’t look
right, and if you turn the brightness right down it looks even worse. It seems
the pixels on s4 get turned off completely on black areas of the screen and
react slowly when turned on again. On s3 the pixels are never completely turned
off to probably avoid this artifact. That’s why s3 blackest black is deep gray.

          • KleenDroid

Well I’m going to give this phone a try. If it’s a piece of crap I will return it. But I think it will be ok.

      • droidrazredge

My wife and I are actually going to get S3s instead of S4s. Honestly there isn’t much of a reason to pay over $150 for a better screen (subjective) and a few more bells and whistles we’ll never use (just use it for some apps, talk, text, occasional web browsing), and we both have tablets so we don’t need the latest and greatest smartphone.

      Great way to save money.

Yes I totally agree with you, and the fact that most of those features are coming to the S3 makes the 99$ upgrade fee, with a 50$ gift card rebate, a much better deal than the 199$ upgrade fee.

I don’t think it’s a deal. Most third party places are charging $50 for the device, so Walmart just knocked a little off the top I guess.

They only true reason to get s4 is for more speed, better camera and the best feature, ir blaster. If you don’t care for any of that the note 2 or even s3 are a good choice if you can get them under $50. I just got my wife an s3 on craigslist to replace her iphone 4 that kept running out of memory and she loves it. I think she still wants the 4s but for now I think she is happy with s3

  • RockNRollAres

I have been feverishly checking the FedEx shipping info because I don’t want them to try and deliver it and have nobody home to sign for the package… Had to pay full to keep unlimited so I really can’t have them leave my ~$700 purchase on my doorstep.
Luckily my Spigen Slim Armor case and GLAS.tR screen protector got here just in time on Saturday afternoon.

Fedex will never leave a Verizon phone at someone’s house without a signature. Never.

      • mcdonsco

leave a note on the door to leave the package with your name AND signature clearly on it…they will then leave it as long as it’s “indirect signature required” not “signature required” (which is how Verizon ships them).

    • gokusimpson

Where do you live? I can pick it up and….hold onto it for you

      • RockNRollAres

I can’t believe they were able to do 2 day shipping when I’m a 3 day trip away from Earth!

Anyway, I meant that the signature is required for them to deliver and having them leave it is not an option I’m willing to consider.

Unfortunately, I’m at work until 4:30… At least listening to the 1PM XBOX reveal will help take my mind away from the anticipation for the phone for a little bit.

I don’t need luck? apps are small as hell compared with most games, and honestly if your so into your phone that you really need that much storage, I can’t imagine you would have any trouble moving what ever you want to your SD card. Power user and unrooted phone just doesn’t seem to mix to me.

          • Daistaar

The Note 2 was an expensive phone though that was already $300 on contract for the 16GB for all carriers and was/is at least $750 full retail, I believe. I don’t think the carriers wanted to go over $300 on contract for a 32/64GB Note 2.

I’m more curious how many readers here actually are buying this? Oh it’ll sell well to the masses, but to DL readers for the VZ version? I’m more surprised. Most all you hear is “need to keep unlimited” or “leaving VZ” around here.

    • KleenDroid

I am getting two of them. And yes I am keeping my unlimited which means I will be paying full price for both. I looked at the tier plan pricing to calculate which would truly be the best way to go and was surprised to see I’d be better buying 2 phones at full price. I have 5 lines on unlimited data and only pay $200 per month. The tier plan would take me to $270 per month and I’d have to pay more if I got more data. I don’t think losing my unlimited data is worth it. If I paid $30 per line for unlimited data like many others it would be closer but I get a $20 discount per line for data from that deal a couple years ago.

Full price is the way to go. Instead of $200 each I’ll be paying $650. Which is a much better deal for me…

Not sure exactly how but, I made sure:

Jax: When ordering a new device you must select a data package. So I would recommend selecting the 2gb.
You: I understand that…. but does that line not already have data? If it doesn’t.. I’m not so sure I want to go through with this; I don’t want to raise the bill for another 2 years for a phone..
You: haha hope that makes sense.. if I already have data on that line, and the monthly is the same.. that is fine.
Jax: Yes you do have data. It’s not going to raise the bill.
Jax: The order is not looking at your current plan. it is looking at this new phone and being a smart phone it requires data. So you have to select it for the new phone.
You: Alright, as long as the 0146 line already has data, that is what you’re confirming.. is it not?
            Jax: It does.
            You: cool… continuing. lol
            Jax: Great!
You: Actually… why can I not keep the current data plan it has??? It WILL raise my bill; it is only allowing me to select the $30 plan…
You: The line currently has a $10 dollar plan… can I not keep that?
Jax: You will need to select it for the order. There is no way around it. It does have a data plan. But when you activate it, then activate the old device back there will not be any additional charges.
Jax: It is required for the order. But once you activate it on your line the $10 will be there.
            You: Yeah.. I can’t do that….
You: that is at least 20 more dollars a month for 2 years….
You: That is almost half a grand…
Jax: it does not raise your bill.
Jax: You have to select it for the order.
Jax: When you activate the old device it will be right back to $10.
Jax: There is no additional charges.
You: Can you write a note on the account, to ensure that is the case??
Jax: That is how it works. When you activate the old phone back the $10 package will be there not this package. It is JUST for the order.
Jax: I can show you how to get a copy of this chat as a reference.
Jax: at the end of our chat.
            You: Perfect
You: I will make the order now

I was wondering how they could pull that off. That is exactly what they are doing for me. They added me another line, which I bought the S4 via the upgrade price…bought the 7 inch 4G galaxy tab which let me keep unlimited..when I get the phone, the unlimited data from the tab will transfer to me S4. Then I’ll be going to a single line for 80 bucks with unlimited data. Now I do have a 2nd line which my dad was on so somehow it seems I’ll be closing 2 lines so not sure how that will work!

Interesting, that surprises me. You think there was any confusion in the conversation as to whether you were talking full retail price or contract price? I don’t see what differentiates off-contract phones from any other product you could buy in the store.
