SNL Tries to Spoof Google Glass, Fails to Produce Many Laughs

Google Glass has certainly seen its fair share of criticisms and praises since becoming available for developers and random media personalities over the last couple of weeks. But I think it’s safe to say that no tech product’s early life cycle would be complete without its own Saturday Night Live skit. That has now happened.

And while I’m not here to be a comedy critic, this failed to make me laugh thanks to repetitive joke after repetitive joke. Fred Armisen can be funny from time to time, however, I never want to hear anyone utter the word “peacock” ever again. Or maybe I’m just a grump.

Cheers Kerry and Aaron!

sorry but i was rolling the entire time…. google glass IMO is overhyped and wont take off… FAIL. SNL hit it correctly. Id rather wear the glowing notification bracelet…. lol

  • Artune

I actually chuckled a few times, nothing to lol at.

  • J Dub

It’s because of Portlandia isn’t it Kellen?

  • TheDrunkenClam

Saturday Night Liberals hasn’t been funny for going on twenty years now.

  • baconslayer09

It would have been funny if all of this was true…but it’s not.

Check out Ron Amadeo’s video of Glass. The voice recognition on this thing is fantastic.

  • Sporttster

SNL failing to generate laughs? This has been the case for decades now….

  • mcook

No it was pretty stupid…wouldn’t expect anything less from SNL

  • Sean Bello

probably sucked because Fred Armisen isn’t funny. at all.

  • “Hilarious”, uh, no. “Stupid” is being generous, but that is just me. Generally, I don’t find SNL that funny anymore, not like in the good old days. Perhaps when they have a good guest it can be funny, but their skits with the base staff tend to be much like you see in the video. Repeat the same joke over for 3 minutes and see if we can get everyone to laugh at it. Lame.

Oh, and it doesn’t have anything to do with Android, Google, etc. They could have done a similar skit about Siri, Apple, iPhone, and it would still be stupid.

  • partidroid

Oh SNL, why can’t you just die.

  • Trevor Clement

If you didn’t think that skit was funny then you probably also won’t get why people will be laughing when they see you in Starbucks wearing Google Glasses.

    • rodney11ride

lol… exactly. When people are staring at you because of the hideous thing on your face “its because you look DUMB”

  • David W. Skyview

i’ve seen better spoof clips of glass on youtube. writers are just lazy or uninspired. or don’t actually know what glass is about maybe. i can write a better skit with that dude’s dad using a bt headset and his grandpa use a holster flip phone and do a 3 way call.

Kellen, you just have too much love for Google, and becoming a Google Purist.

  • JolleyMan

I so desperately need Google Glass. I would use it for music lyrics so I could impress everyone with my wealth of knowledge as I sang every song at the top of my lungs and never missed a word. Then again, my voice may negate my newfound coolness. #ifihadglassandtheywerestillacceptingapplications

  • I thought there were funny parts, but the bit as a whole didn’t really measure up.

They spent too much time making fun of it not working right, when the places to mine for comedy are its looks and the fact that it’s a computer on your face.

  • Raven65

I thought it was hilarious! Hit a little too close to home, Kellex?

  • Tom

Disagree! It was hilarious and I got a kick out of it! Even if was based in fantasy, fakeness and lies, still funny at all get out!

    • rodney11ride

  • thefullritz

Kellen is a grump! That was very funny….they went over board with peacock, but otherwise hilarious!

  • Ian Smith

the head movements were a nice touch

  • Ron_Swanson

I found it funny. Armisen is one of the last remaining cast members left who is even funny, of course Portlandia is 10x funnier than SNL right now….so that’s not a big shock

  • Sirx

I like a good ribbing. It wasn’t the subject matter that was the problem–the execution of this joke was terrible. There are at least 20+ different ways of making fun of Google Glass and its users. This skit only used one–and even it wasn’t very good (what happened to POV porn that–judging from the audio–was self-made and not very good, being repeated for everyone to hear?)

  • I laughed when the porn started playing, but for the most part it wasn’t funny.

  • Fred

Kellex is just a grump. It was hysterical. Just like the iPhone 5 owners versus the Asian factory workers skit and the Steve Jobs iPod Invisa skit. Google users getting butthurt now, perhaps? Don’t become humorless like iPhone users who can’t laugh at themselves and take personal offense if someone makes an iPhone joke. Someone made a Google Glass joke. And it was funny. Don’t get bent out of shape. And if you want more funny Google Glass parodies, there’s a ton on YouTube (of all places). Like the one where Google Glass shows AdWords ads on top of everything you look at…

    • Sam’s Son

Come on now. You know he wasn’t getting offended. The other day he was laughing at that Microsoft phone ad poking fun of Apple and Samsung.

  • yankeesusa

Although snl isn’t as good as it used to be and I would love to have madtv back this skit was pretty funny. I couldn’t stop laughing.

  • Seemed a bit forced. They went the standard route – porn, other people talking etc. Not original

  • 213ninja

That skit was pretty funny and SNL is hilarious.

    • 213ninja

The people hating on here sound old.

      • 213ninja

And I’ve been a fan of SNL since Dan Akroyd and Steve Martin were killing it.

  • xkaedoggx

It was hilarious. Some of you fanboys need to lighten up.

  • I found out a while ago, that after you have sex, SNL will just stop being funny for you; however, the episodes that you liked before will still make you laugh…

  • cknight91

This was pretty funny. Too many of you guys are starting to sound like apple customers.

  • i dont know i thought it was pretty funny.. LOL..

  • JoshGroff

SNL died long ago IMO, now they’re just reusing the same old jokes or just throwing sad attempts at humor. Every now and then there’s a good skit, but it’s definitely not as good as it used to be.

  • I think if they had better writers, it could have been funny, but that was awful.

  • It is a pretty decent barometer for public opinion. Maybe when they balance out the design, like putting the camera on the opposite side of the screen, it won’t look so odd to people. Main thing is that it is different and well known enough for a SNL skit. Right now its love or hate. Imitation is the highest form or flattery. Ask any comedian.

  • topherct

    I agree it was terrible

  • Inquizitor

I haven’t laughed at much of SNL in general in the past 3 years or so. However, this headline and article sound really butthurt for no good reason. Lighten up, Kellen!

    • Yeah, it really wasn’t that bad. I found it funny and I cannot wait to get my hands on glass!

  • Edwin Mann

That was funny as hell, you guys must lead boring ass lives

    • T_Dizzle

I definitely prefer my life to yours if you thought that was funny. I’m not being mean but that was not all that funny.

  • That was like someone farting. Funny at first then smells like crap afterwards.

  • valapsp

    The PORN part was awesome.

The one they did on the iPhone 5 was damn funny. I’m sure you can find it on YouTube.

  • prestone1

  • DCABuckeye

Seriously, back, back, back, back.. it was hilarious. Like all satire, not everyone is going to “get it.”

  • Mike

Yea, not funny… Like, at all.

  • Steve Benson

    Yikes, that was terrible.

  • Brian Sargent

Yeah…i thought it was amusing. Don’t care for SNL at all but unless Glass has better speech recognition than my rooted GNex, I can totally see the issues that they blew out of proportion. That’s what a lot of comedy is…an over-exaggeration of the truth.

  • Are you kidding me….that was hilarious…I was cracking up…especially when he rebooted…

    • The reboot was the funniest part

    • 213ninja

I was thinking it was paid for by apple advertising revenue, until I saw in the show that the 2 mac book’s had the apple symbols covered up by round stickers.
There are shows like Hawaii 5.0 ( uses MS tablets and phones) and other shows that are paid for by MS and apple Advertising to feature their products through out the shows with product placement.

Purists don’t take kindly to Google jokes.

    • TylerChappell

Ahaha, I actually found it quite funny for at least 70% of it and I intend to get my own pair when they are released.

  • jeradc

you guys need to lighten up, it was a good spoof on Google Glass, I enjoyed it.

  • Larry Hartman

Awesome! I now have my first reason to purchase Google glasses surf porn and have both hands free oh the possibility’s! I can now keep both hands on my steering wheel while i drive Pervs….

  • zepfloyd

That was just, awkward and unfunny. …like most skits they do these days.

  • AnotherAndroidKid

Looks like they used Siri for this version.

  • My thoughts exactly. I didn’t think it was funny at all. I might smirked at the porn bit, that’s it.

  • EC8CH

    Cue the crickets….

There are some very funny things about Glass, but that failed miserably. That was less about making fun of glass and more about making fun of voice recognition, which BTW works insanely well for me.

Why not make fun of someone staring blindly into space as someone is talking to them?

  • jayray78

    I didn’t laugh either

  • possomcrast

    I really love Portlandia, though.

  • I’m not going to lie, this was downright cringe-worthy to watch.

  • Greg Morgan

It seems to me that SNL isn’t quite as funny as it used to be.

    • Thomas

Agree. It’s back to that crappy stage when Colin Quinn did the Weekend Update. Just not funny at all anymore. I sure miss the days of Sandler, Schneider, Farley, & Spade.

      • tlennon

And back then they were considered the “worst cast ever”. Funny how nostalgia works.

        • Greg Morgan

If they were considered “worst cast ever,” what do we consider today’s cast? lol

    • EC8CH

seems like funny on that show comes and goes on a 5 year cycle

    • KleenDroid

It has never been the same since the original crew.

    • CapnShiner

SNL’s current cast is hit and miss. Some of it is really funny, there will be some bits that are kinda funny (like the one in question here), and the rest is just not funny at all. For example, the most recent time Justin Timberlake hosted, I thought the monologue was awesome, the dating show sketch was pretty good, and the NuvaBling spoof ad was great. The rest of the episode sucked. I think Seth Meyers has some really good jokes during Weekend Update, which is often the only funny part of the episode. They lost Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig this season and they were two of the best. Of the current cast, Bill Hader and Bobby Moynihan are pretty good. Kenan Thompson, Fred Armisen, and Vanessa Bayer have their moments but otherwise they just kind of blend in. Fred Armisen is usually pretty good but he isn’t on screen as much anymore. Jason Sudekis has been on the cast way too long. He doesn’t have any memorable characters that I can think of. Unless he has written good sketches for other people, I don’t know why he’s still there. The rest of the cast is either brand new or just forgettable.

SNL used to be known for original characters but they don’t seem to do much of that anymore. There are some recurring characters that appear during Weekend Update with Seth Meyers but not in their own sketches. I think Kristin Wiig was really the last cast member to have a recurring character in her own sketches. SNL cast members used to build their own brands through their characters, like Chris Farley and his character Matt Foley, Mike Meyers/Dana Carvey with Wayne’s World, or Will Ferrell/Cheri Oteri and the Spartan Cheerleaders. It doesn’t seem like anyone does that anymore and I think that’s a big part of why the show isn’t as good as it used to be. They try to make everything so topical and the cast members’ own personalities don’t have a chance to shine through. Maybe their personalities just aren’t strong enough. Maybe they’re making up for a weak cast that can’t handle making up their own characters by focusing on topical humor. Maybe someone in charge decided to focus on topical humor and won’t let the cast showcase their own original characters. I don’t know what the reason is but SNL has changed. The characters that made people want to watch every weekend are gone. All that’s left is a few really funny jokes or sketches every and then a bunch of crap to fill the rest of the time slot. That’s why people say it sucks.

    • J Dub

I really think it depends on who is hosting. The Kevin Hart hosted show was only so so. Yet some of them have great skits. Seems like each episode has one skit that is really good at least.
