DROID Bionic Jelly Bean Update Rolling Out Now!

bionic smart actions

We’ve heard from a handful of readers this morning who were able to update their DROID Bionic devices to official Jelly Bean. The update itself was approved by Verizon last week as build 98.72.22, so the timing for a rollout seems about right. One of our readers that received the update was not a part of the soak test either, leading us to believe that the update may be live for everyone.

To get yourself into Google Now, head into Settings>About phone>System updates and see if the update is available. The support documents for the update show it as being about 98MB in size.

If you aren’t able to pull it, a manual install is still available.

Cheers March, Josh and everyone else!

    No more headphone whine, HOORAY!!

  • Rustin Harris

Mine works, until I try to put in in my dock… Dock mode crashes, anyone know how to fix this?

    • jfr69

I just restarted my phone & haven’t had the problem since.. I use the HDMI & car docks with no problem

  • mart Mason

yes upgrade now the phone doesn’t work at all bravo

  • sonya

With the update, I’ve lost most of my contacts and photo id’s. 🙁

  • As a (hopefully not too late) public note, this update breaks root in most cases. In some cases root can be recovered by using one of several “root backup” utilities BEFORE the update.

  • phone updated last night, and now it’s not working. Unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped. this is a stock phone with only 5 apps installed. seriously wtf verizon

  • I’ve lost twitter and Facebook notifications after the update. I’ve checked the notification check box in App managers, made sure all the notification settings are checked in the apps but still no notifications.

Anyone else having this issue? Anyone know a solution?

    • I had the same problem. It is an issue with Facebook rage facing against the world. LOL!!! Seriously, Facebook and android are not getting along and what is happening is that facebook won’t allow porting. But that is not new news. I’ve downloaded Ubersync for facebook and life was immediately good. Here is the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ro.weednet.contactssync&hl=en

Give it a shot. I’ve heard that it doesn’t work every time, but I’ve had no issues whatsoever.

      • I re-installed the apps and notifications starting working. Thanks for the link… I’ll check it out.

    • SOLUTION: Uninstall and re-install the apps. Once that was done notifications starting working properly.

    • ChuckCaves

      I’m not sure… but that sounds like a feature to me… 😉

  • StuCozza

It is loading onto my Druid Bionic as I type this (on a different system, of course 😉 )..

  • kschang

There are TWO OTA updates, depending on how often you checked. The 100 MB is to update your phone to latest ICS (4.0.4). THEN you get a 312MB OTA to updated to JB.

I’m getting that dreaded “update failed” doing the 312MB update. The update went through about 20% when I suddenly got “Andy laying on ground, stomach open, with a bit red ALERT TRIANGLE over his stomach” picture, then the phone rebooted back into ICS.

I had safestrap recovery installed, but it’s not active. And uninstalling the recovery didn’t affect this failure. I’m trying manual Nandroid recovery install now, but had to download the file manually now. This is the third time I’ve tried (twice via OTA, now third time manual)

  • BILL

yup,got jellybean today without a hiccup.works great. wifes phone looks good now. too bad motorola waited so long to fulfill their promise. i already switched to s-3 and love it. wife will be switching soon too. this will be last update foe bionic.

  • For those that want the Motorola clock widget download app One More Clock

  • RoadsterHD1

    Lets get a Key-Lime Pie update list going….. 🙂

  • boo root didn’t save with either voodoo or superuser. oh well, phone is a lot faster though!!

  • JEddings

Got mine last night. Been waiting a long time, and so far so good.

  • BenAround

updated this morning. Lost root. OTA Rootkeeper doesn’t bring it back. Any suggestions before I go back to the drawing board and try re-rooting it from scratch?

  • andrew galvin

spoiler alert… your phone still sucks

    • RoadsterHD1

      Bite us! dork….

    • RoadsterHD1

      You SUCK!!!

  • Silver Veloz

FYI – For those who have the Motorola Lapdock, it works fine after this Jelly Bean update. Have fun.

  • JPaws67

Got the JB update late last night! Love it except for a couple things…there’s no more clock widget except for the analog clock which I don’t like. I was really hoping to get the Motorola Circle Clock widget…but now there’s no stock widget at all (weird…). Everything else is great so far though!

  • The rest of us exist too

Meanwhile on my international Droid Razr, I’m never getting Jelly Bean. First world crap

    • I am from India and Motorola said NO JB for Asia.Retail… I just flashed EU.Retail ICS ROM, rooted it – then saved it via ota root keeper, then flashed EU.Retail.JB Leak via Stock Recovery, retained root via again ota root keeper…

Now my RazrMAXX XT910 is flying due to JB (rooted).. This is the beauty of Android… You need NOT worry if operator/phone maker ignores a part of market…

  • abdroid

    My update was 322mb

  • Congrats, Bionic owners!

  • Dave

It looks like I’m one of the very few having problems. I got my update this morning, but the 4G (or 3G) won’t work now and I keep getting a pop-up that says “Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped” with an “Ok” button to hit. This keeps popping up constantly. I’m not a happy camper. Does anyone have any ideas?

    • Daniel Clifford

      reset the phone?

      • Dave

        • Michael Ricke

Turn it off and turn it back on!

        • Daniel Clifford

Factory Data Reset. In the settings option.

          • Armored Cavalry

I had the exact same issue as Dave, and took the exact same advice.

This results is a soft-brick of the phone, which took forever to find the solution for.

Here is the thread, along with the exact description of what caused the problem – http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236980

    • RoadsterHD1

Remove battery for 10 minutes. Or Hard shut down. Press volume up and down buttons and power button at the same time for about 15 seconds and the phone reboots.

    • Chris Starke

up, down, up, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, start? Okay, sorry… I’m wondering if there’s any common thread with those experiencing difficulty. Did you encounter any problems with the installation process itself? Did you get the OTA or did you d/l manually? Is your phone rooted?

  • zombiewolf115

the update is great. i manualy updated a few days ago but. am only disappointed in what they did to the gallery. the gallery grabed 50 albums from all my sd card. and put 20 differnt albums with just one pic of all my music covers. quite annoying

    • Oh crap… I haven’t checked. I don’t even wanna look now. Also: oh crap…

      • zombiewolf115

do it mate. even worse. i had 4 droids. all the camera albums are saved on my sd card. so now i have 4 different camera albums. just check around now and watch how pissed ull be trynna sorta it. even though u cant sort it cause theres no damn settings for gallery

        • Whew… mine’s fine. Same as before. Also, I use QuickPic instead of that godawful motoblur Gallery. I checked that first and it was fine; checked Gallery – also fine. Sorry yours is such a mess.

  • CaptM

I just checked for system updates at 9 am Pacific time and I’m downloading it now. Finally.

  • scastro87

    Got mine this morning!

  • Daniel Russell

Any other Bionic owners able to get rid of the default text message icon on the lock screen? The disable button on the app is “greyed out.” Anyone know how to get handcent in the lock screen without root?

    • RoadsterHD1

Not sure, my was disables upon updating to JB and it stayed that way.

  • Tommy

WOW! This update like hit me right in the face! xDD
I was writing a message to my friend over Facebook, then out of nowhere the notification popped up, causing me to inadvertently hit “Upgrade Now!”, which started shutting down the phone. xDDD I was like “Nuuuuuuuuuuu! I didn’t finish my message!” XDDD

  • lord helmet

When will then be now? Soon.

  • Silver Veloz

I received my updated on Monday a.m. and I was not part of the soak group or even signed up for it. It was just there. Great for everyone finally getting JB.

    • RJ

I experienced the same thing. It came in on Monday and I have never been a soak tester. And yes, it’s over 300 MB. I have experienced an odd Motorola Services repetitive crash on it. But ending that service seems to be a workaround for now. Overall my phone is running much better now! I like JB a lot.

  • TJ

Stock unrooted phone in my office took this update and now the mic is working except on speakerphone….

  • matt_helm

Mine updated the first time OTA!!!

  • Bionic

Next up will be an update that turns your Bionic into an X phone

    • zombiewolf115

just be the sales representative for motorola already lmao

  • Joshua Berkowitz

Delicious, delicious jelly bean. I’ve been waiting for you!

  • Kane2165

Got mine this morning. So far so good. Phone seems more responsive than with ICS and who doesn’t like some Google Now!

  • Khammy

Had JB on my Bionic since Monday. Loving the small changes like: text, transparent notification bar and expanded notifications. I’ve no concern about Now and I had a small issue with Search that was solved by re-installing it’s update. Kept my root after update so a big thanks to a certain Digital Samurai and crew.

  • bakdroid

To me, it seems like this update is not finished. Don’t get me wrong, it runs well but it is missing refinements. Still a ton of bloat, weird screen flashes, and that really strange Chinese keyboard that is enabled by default. It just screams beta build and not a public release. Perhaps there will be a maintenance update that will fix things. But this should limp the phone along till the….*wait for it*…..X-Phone!

    • Khammy

Sorry to hear you have these issues. I’m seeing none of these on my own Bionic. To my knowledge there was never a promise of ‘no’ bloat, just a removal of a few items.

    • MGardnerDA1235

Did you wipe the cache partition from recovery mode? That’s usually required to get all the bugs out with these updates. If that doesn’t work, a Factory Data Reset probably would…as painful as that would be.

This is the first time since I’ve purchased the phone that it actually works. It’s actually bearable to use again.

      • bakdroid

When there are major upgrades to an OS I always do a wipe of both internal SD and FR through recovery to include the cache partition. I came from the OG where ROMing is second nature. Old habits die hard, but it is probably a good thing.

The screen flashes are random and could be attributed to some app I have installed, who knows but it is annoying at times. As for the Chinese keyboard, that is a build issue. This is a US phone, there is no reason it should be on the phone at all.

    • ddevito

that IMO keyboard is on stock as well.

      • bakdroid

Seriously? It wasn’t in the Xoom JB.

  • Bionic

Finally I am the phone in was born to be

    • mustbepbs

“Finally I am the phone in was born to be”

You’re right, the Bionic was a phone in.

    • Shane Redman

until KLP hits the mean streets….

  • paul

i need help with my update it downloads and when it finishes it turns the phone off then restarts it and then the lil droid starts downloading sumthn the aftr the download bar gets half way it stops everything then boots the phone normally then says update failed

  • Susyflower

Just tried to get the update and it says “Check for update is not available at this time. Try again later.”

    • Daniel Clifford

Rolls out in stages. You can try doing the Framework Services trick.

    • MGardnerDA1235

I had this probably as well for the last couple months…I don’t think it is only because the update isn’t available to you yet. I think it’s because the Bionic has been crap and ICS was not nice to it either. I downloaded the file manually to my phone and did the install myself. Now when I click to update the phone it provides the more anticipated language of “Your device is up to date! No update necessary at this time.’

  • help

my update wont install it downloads and turns off but when its installing it stops restarts the phone then says update failed

    • Daniel Russell

If you have any apps disabled, it won’t update correctly. That happened to me and enabling all those bloatware apps seemed to do the trick.

  • Illinipoke

Are you sure its 98MB? The one i downloaded on Monday was 321M

  • JimmyF101

I received Jelly Bean this morning. It took an hour from start to finish. I like it so far! The clock font is different. The battery life monitor now shows in increments of 5 (finally). I noticed the Camera icon has changed and there is now a Movie Studio app installed. MOG was still in my app tray but I was able to uninstall it. And finally…Google Now!

    • scastro87

Yeah, I like the old camera icon better but other than that, I like it so far.

  • I wasn’t part of the soak test but got it Monday, I just assumed it was out for everyone on Monday

  • Tillmorn

For those interested in keeping root: Be sure to check out topics on XDA or Droidrzr prior to taking the update. Don’t forget to update SuperUser binaries before using Voodoo!

  • tyguy829

Damn….if this was approved like a couple weeks ago, the bionic would have been running a newer version than the Gnex….imagine that

    • T4rd

Wasn’t that a month or two ago?

      • EC8CH

I seem to remember running JB on my VZW G-Nex a day or two after it was released…
Jelly Belly if I remember correctly

        • JoshGroff

If you’re going to cry about updates, either root and ROM, get a carrier unlocked nexus, or get an iPhone. (I wouldn’t recommend the last one personally, but it’s always an option.)

    • KleenDroid

While it is Jellybean I doubt it the version the Gnex is running.

      • JoshGroff

The G-Nex is now on 4.2.2, but it was on 4.1.1 until last month or so. (Officially)

    • Stewie

Not my Gnex, new AOSP build out now …

  • Woooooooooooooooooo! My day has been made. JB here I come!

  • Daniel Clifford

They started pushing it out to the public last night.

  • I’m downloading it as I write this, awesome!! FINALLY!:)
