DROID Bionic Jelly Bean Update Available for Download and Manual Install

bionic jb1

On Friday, Verizon approved the much-anticipated Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.2) update for the Motorola DROID Bionic. As is typical with Motorola updates, an initial rollout of the new firmware was pushed to members of a test group to make sure that no major issues were hanging around. Thanks to that push to testers, we now have the file for anyone willing to take the plunge and manually update ahead of time.

In order to flash the update file, you’ll have to be running stock 6.7.246, which is the last update the Bionic received. You can have root prior to updating, but will likely need to utilize the OTA Rootkeeper app in order to keep it afterwards. Reports seem to be mixed thus far on whether or not this is working, though.

In order to flash the update, download the file from below, drop it on your SD card, reboot into recovery, and then install from SD Card.

The full changelog for the update can be found here.

Update:  If the download link below is dead, be sure to head to the XDA thread.

Cheers Russel and Justtyn!

Still nothing here is good old Springfield ohio but it would be nice if I would get it here sometime today the sooner the better. Any one else get it and when did you get it?

  • Guest

    Still nothing in Colorado :(

  • Cody Myers

    Still waiting here in Iowa

  • Tayquil

This is bs I haven’t gotten it yet. This article is obviously a fake!

    • zombiewolf115

its to manually download it. this is the update from the soak testers. the OTA gets pushed within the these next 2-3 days

      • Silver Veloz

Not true! I got mine on Monday – OTA. I am not a soak tester and never signed up for it. I am a regular stock Bionic user. The OTA update showed up on my phone Monday morning and I’ve had JB since.

  • Pat

Where is mine I am in Ohio and nothing yet

  • syphillisdiller

Not thrilled so far. My battery is so bad now that I can literally sit and watch the percentage # drop. It’s an old battery, but it usually survives a lot more than 45 minutes of browsing mixed in with 5 hours in airplane mode not being used. I also haven’t been able to get a 4g signal anywhere since updating yesterday,

Has anybody heard any similar complaints, or run into these problems?

    • Justin

Mine has been up for 24hrs…looks to be the same as usual

    • bakdroid

      Factory reset.

      • syphillisdiller

I was hoping to avoid that, but have since tried twice. No luck. I also gave the *#*#4636#*#* thing a shot to manually switch my network…no luck there either.

        It’s a shame…because otherwise, i like it.

        • John

I dont know why.. but this seemed to help: go to your data settings (Settings > More… > Mobile Networks) then keep clicking the “Data Enabled” toggle for about 15 seconds, leave on, and your 4G should kick on momentarily. Found this out of anger… lol.

    • Rockwell

LTE On/Off from the play store. I keep mine on 3G like all the time. It helps loads with the battery. Especially with all the data intensive background processes.

      • Rockwell

I forgot to mention, even though you are having trouble with the 4G signal, what could be killing your battery is the radio failing to connect to a 4G tower.

    • RoadsterHD1

install “android assistant” and look at the CPU activity, see if its idling at around 80-90% or if its running a user app or system app at full speed. If you have a user app that has gone rogue then you need to find it and remove it or reinstall it. To find it you might want to look at “manage apps” and look under “running” and find an app that looks to active or you can “force stop” one at a time and look at your CPU activity after each one you stop to see if CPU activity calms down. Your CPU activity should be around 80-90 idle your user and system should be around 1-2% when not doing anything.

      • syphillisdiller

I tried this, but don’t see anything that looks like it’s causing a problem. I like the Android Assistant app though, thanks.

  • Dslush

Getting error error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip …. please help.

  • John Jenness

The OTA is definately rolling out, got it this morning.

    • SkateRyan

      Where’s mine? Dx

      • Justin

Download the .zip and do it yourself!

        • SkateRyan

I’d rather wait for OTA. I’m being more silly than serious.

          • zombiewolf115

i feel more better waiting for the OTA there are alot of being on these comments alone saying they are getting errors trying to use the .zip

        • RaBron

Why don’t you download the zip you dingus

          • SkateRyan

I’d rather wait for OTA. I’m being more silly than serious.

  • bakdroid

What is with the Chinese keyboard? Seems like this is something that should have been removed before release. I also thought Moto was debloating the phone and that Chrome was the only browser. OS seems like a good build so far but like they forgot to finish up by deleting stuff.

  • http://www.elliottblufer.com Elliott Blufer

    So much better.

  • Bionic

    Yay jellies

    • Christopher Riner

Hahaha, I don’t know why that’s so funny. I’m gonna go by the number of comments you’ve posted here that you’re a pretty happy guy right now. This comment of yours definitely confirms.

  • redragn5

I’m getting an E: signature verification failed error on all the different versions still open on the XDA post. Completely stock with no frozen apps, any advice?

  • SkateRyan

So far, nothing here in Dallas. I’m getting antsy. I don’t want to do the manual update. I want to wait for the download… So hard to wait…

    • ROB

      I didn’t…and it is a nice update.

    • ROB

      I didn’t…and it is a nice update.

  • SkateRyan

Anyone know when the OTA will be available?

  • ranlil

Could someone else please post some links? All the present xda links have been overwhelmed.

    • Justin

Pg 15 and 16 on the thread XDA

      • ranlil

        Thanks man… Getting it now

        • Justin

No prob. If that one goes down, message me i hgave the .zip too

  • http://www.facebook.com/nathanielnewmanmusic Nathaniel Newman

Ok I got rid of Bootstrap and removed the Logwrapper hack and renamed Logwrapper.bin to logwrapper. However JB update STILL failing due to logwrapper error. Voodoo OTA unrooted too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/MMBlackstar Blackstar Firewall

All I really care about, is if the update fixed the whining noise with earphones. Between Kexec support (bypassing the bootloader) and LiquidSmooth (JB 4.2.2) being officially ported over to the Bionic, all of my other issues with the phone have been resolved.

  • Justin
  • http://www.facebook.com/jessica.limke Jessica L Limke

I’m having issues getting my phone from 232 to 246, any suggestions?

  • http://www.facebook.com/jon.renz Jon Renz

got the update few hours ago. the camera is finally fixed. still playing around w/ it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nathanielnewmanmusic Nathaniel Newman

I got it via Torrent. Seeding now!

  • Trevor

    Holy crap; it happened

  • Tom Edwards

I checked my system update and its telling me its up to date with 4.0.4 When will it roll out nationwide?

    • RoadsterHD1

Its going out in spurts. be patient, if your area was not selected today, maybe tomorrow.

    • Tom Edwards

Still no update available this morning……. waiting for this sucks!! lol

      • Justin

        Download thezip

  • Daniel Russell

This makes Tax Day infinitely better. My Bionic is no longer sad.

  • RoadsterHD1

I’ve heard allot of two versions of this update and people are concerned we got the wrong one. Can anybody share any information you have?

    • Bionic

We’re all clear. It’s been addressed. Per sarge

      • RoadsterHD1

        thanks dude

  • ddevito

Say what you want – but updating a phone 9 months after the OS is released is still unacceptable. In 6 weeks Android 5 will be released and you’ll be bitchin all over again

    • Silver Veloz

We are not bitching, we are excited about this. Remember, we got ICS and now JB, which we weren’t originally going to get anyway. They could have easily left us behind with Gingerbread. I’m happy about it.

    • Bionic

Wrong. 5.0 will be PREVIEWED at IO not released

  • osp422

Will this affect the access to the lapdock.

    • Silver Veloz

I heard we’ll be good to go there. But I guess the only way to find out is try once someone installs the update. I’m hoping – fingers crossed.

  • neo1738

UPDATE: I created a torrent for it. Please remember to seed. I will not be seeding to multiple people for more than 12 hours. Just going to do enough to get it out there the community needs to do the rest. Visit the XDA link for the torrent.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000097716654 Michael Contreras

As a former Bionic owner, it’s exciting to see a device this old to get such a major update that is jellybean, but I was swayed more with the Nexus 4 and the better ecosystem it provided than the Bionic considering the whole debacle it went through just to get ics. I don’t hate the phone, just hate how Motorola and Verizon handled the update process.

  • http://www.facebook.com/danielspaulding Dan Spaulding

Can anyone attest to better battery life?! I love the Bionic, but I cant get through a day with the battery, and I have gotten replacements from big V. Wondering if my phone is the prob, or the last update, because the Bionic had great battery life before 6.7.246 … now, it is poop.

    • zombiewolf115

idk about you but my droid bionic lastest all day. and i sit in college for 7 hours watching netflix and i go home on 40%

      • scastro87

I watch Netflix on the way to work. After 20-30 minutes I’m at 60%, even with new batteries that I’ve bought.

    • RoadsterHD1

do you have the original battery if so I need to buy a new one

  • KOBALT

Just outta reach for me when i bitched enough to get a Rezound and upgraded to Note 2. I can’t imagine this phone…

    • hkklife

At the time everyone was biotching and the Bionic had issues (fall of 2011/early 2012), the Rezound was a better device due to more stability, better camera & a 720p screen. Now it is so ironic that the Bionic has had the last laugh as it’s gotten ICS AND JB and the poor Rezound is likely stuck forever on ICS with a dated Sense…

      • KOBALT

Wow, I had no idea. I do miss my Bionic. I was first in line and played with it my whole honeymoon. I’m on the Note 2 now and couldn’t be happier. Looking forward to the N3 in Sept.

  • Silver Veloz

Ok – get this! I picked up my phone as I was messaging a buddy back and forth. I saw on the screen a message “An update is available……will automatically download in xx seconds. Well, it started automatically, didn’t have a chance to pick Later or Download (the two choices). I was trying to read what it said. Well, here I go. I’m not part of the soak test or anything, just a regular stock user. I do remember quickly seeing 22 at the end of the number. So whether I wanted to do it now or not, too late. It’s already going. I’m at 56% right now. Will see how this goes.

    • neo1738

It won’t auto install, click “install later” then go onto your phone files and “cache/temp” and take the 321mb Blur.zip file and share it on google drive, box, etc and post a link in the XDA for others…k thanks.

  • Stephan

Any chance at another download link for the file? The others appear to be maxed out at the moment :(.

  • Justin

I can honestly say I’ve never really had a problem with my Bionic besides a few random reboots. Downloading the update here in a few!

  • Kahil

has anyone gotten this to work? I am running the stock version of the OS….the file is on the root of the SD card. When I go into recover it just shows a droid with a red warning triangle over it and doesn’t let me go any further. I’ve done the manual updates before…don’t know why it isn’t working.

    Ideas?

    • neo1738

hit volume up and down at same time when red triangle, it will get you to stock recovery

  • hkklife

Wow, this phone is FINALLY at peace with itself and what I was expecting it to be when they announced it at CES 2011!
Well, honestly, it’s been pretty dang good with ICS but the wait to get GB “fixed” and then to get ICS rollout felt like 3 eternities.

Anyone got any early reports on how JB is performing? I won’t have time to load it on the wife’s phone until tonight or tomorrow.

  • Justin

I keep getting “Sorry, you can’t view or download this file at this time.

Too many users have viewed or downloaded this file recently. Please try accessing the file again later. If the file you are trying to access is particularly large or is shared with many people, it may take up to 24 hours to be able to view or download the file. If you still can’t access a file after 24 hours, contact your domain administrator”

    • Endless VertiGo

Same here… failed about 20% into the download for me….. Dammit

      • Justin

Even the alt links on XDA are getting the same errors!
        Too many eager beavers!

        • neo1738

Sorry more people who download from them need to start sharing.

  • troll

My phone bricked…so i used it in a masonry wall outside

    • Bionic

      LMAO

  • http://twitter.com/SD1337 Steve DeBellis

    Link is dead :(

    • Justin

Pg15 & 16 on the XDA thread has new ones

  • zombiewolf115

i want to install it via recovery but i always have the constant feel that if i mess with my phone ill brick it. its been that way ever since my droid X sadly ill just wait for them to push the update OTA

    • Bionic

booting from recovery is so easy dude, even i can do it.

      • neo1738

just read step by step instructions on website. Even if you failed miserably Verizon has posted the Software so you can RSDLite back to stock if absolutely necessary.

  • iphoneh8r

So I’m guessing everyone was happy with .22? Whatever happened to all this talk about it sucking and needing .23?

    • Bionic

i am not going to go into details but lets just say there were some adjustments made

      • Bionic(the guy)sucks

You are such a douche, man. Quit acting like some insider considering the real people in the know have told you to stfu repeatedly.

        • Christopher Riner

Ah, crap I down voted on accident. That is funny tho, I hadn’t really thought about it until now but I have seen him do the insider thing a few times.

      • Bionic (Poser)

You post as if one ounce of information that you pass on is actually your sources. Stop being such a loser already. We all know you plagerize your information from other people. SO when you say your not going to go into details, its because A you don’t know them or B you don’t understand them. Seriously dude, your annoying.

  • Bionic

    And oh yeah……….X phone

    • hkklife

Per Sarge etc, is there any cause for potential for concern on the rumored X Phone delays that have been making the rounds on other sites over the past few days?
I would hate the see the same thing happen to Moto VZW fans this summer as happened last summer….RAZR HD arrived late and relatively under-spec’d to the market and the GS3 cleaned up due to arriving earlier and with mostly stronger specs. Moto has not had a solid VZW summer release since the Droid X in 2010!

      • Bionic

considering those web sites are still reporting a 4.7 inch screen I think you know where we stand on those website

        • hkklife

Good point. I/O cannot get here fast enough…

  • David Dudovitz

Droid DNA update is rolling out also.

  • Bionic

Suddenly I feel faster, smoother, and I suddenly have the ability to predict what my owner is going to ask.

I was asleep and suddenly I heard a voice say “become the phone you were born to be.” I awoke with these strange new feelings and abilities.

    I am reborn

    • zombiewolf115

so theres no problem with the .22 build?

      • Bionic

that is correct, lets just say some things were fixed

        • zombiewolf115

thank god the fear of getting fucked over by verizon at the last second was killing me

          • Bionic

boot it from recovery dude, you’ll be happy

          • zombiewolf115

links dead at the moment lol

          • Bionic

go figure, but im sure somone will have it soon

          • zombiewolf115

so i grew balls and manually updated and it feels great. but i dont like how the camera app got the look of a the camera app from droid x

          • neo1738

I posted it to two different sites, both got taken up pretty quickly. They will restore sometime so keep checking. Problem is people take it and don’t share themselves and eventually it gets bandwidth blocked.

    “X Phone” – Bionic

    • Bionic

      yup

    • Bionic

wanna be my assistant and start posting it for me?

  • ERIC REED

Did the radio problems ever get fixed on the Bionic? The two that I had could never hold a data connection.

    • Diablo81588

That was fixed well over a year ago with the 905 GB update.

      • Christopher Riner

That’s a pretty big update. Wah wah wah wahhhhh

    • Bionic

      forever ago

  • Scott

This would have gotten me real excited in Sept 2011.

    • Scott

      I meant 2012

  • Yoderz

Congratulations, Bionic owners. I’d say this is well deserved. (honestly)

    • RoadsterHD1

      Thanks man….

  • MattInPDX

Didn’t Moto say this update was coming Q1 ’13? If so, another missed target date for the Bionic. Honestly, I didn’t have many problems with this phone, at least not to the extent that many others had. I am glad that I switched to the S3 though.

    • TomStieger

No, they specifically stated at first “will receive JB”, then changed it recently to “Will receive JB Q2, 2013″. They didn’t want to fail, so they didn’t give details until they were sure! :-)

  • http://www.facebook.com/chris.moch.10 Chris Moch

$10 bucks they locked down the bootloader…

    • JoshGroff

IIRC it was never unlocked in the first place. I know it was bypassed though.

      • Guest

That and you can’t be sure because recently they opened up various bootloaders.

    • Justin

All you have to do is get a coat hanger, unravel it, and stick it in the earphone jack port.
Jam it around firmly and continue to do so for a minute. The phone will unlock itself shortly thereafter.
