Facebook Home Now Available on Android for Select Devices

facebook home install

After updating the standard Facebook and Messenger apps this morning to prepare for the arrival of Facebook Home, Facebook has released the final piece to the puzzle. That’s right, Facebook Home is now available for select devices. If you own a Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, HTC One, One X, or One X+, feel free to grab the app from Google Play for free.

For those not familiar, Facebook Home is similar in a way to apps like Nova Launcher because it’s nothing more than a 3rd party launcher that can replace your current home experience. But it differs drastically when it comes to features and user experience in that Facebook is pushed to the front of your phone. Your app drawer is accessed differently, there are no widgets, your timeline is streamed as pages on your home screens, and navigation is something that may take some getting used to.

Additional support for devices not mentioned above is on the way, but no specific timeframe has been given.

*Note – At this time, it’s semi-live. We are only able to see it on our Nexus 4s. I can’t get it to show up on my HTC One or Galaxy S3, two devices that are supposed to be compatible. Give it a few minutes.

Update:  It appears to be live for my Galaxy S3 and HTC One, as long as I click on the direct link. Searching, I still come up empty.

Works on my DNA with the sideload apk.

  • Adamania

I’ll try it out. Why not? If nothing else, I’ll just uninstall it.

  • Chagrin

Not working for my international Sgs3 – GT-I9300.

  • JazzoRenee

    I’m not downloading this. #theend

If you’re on a Nexus 4 device just edit your build.prop manufacturer to “samsung”, worked for me!

  • wm snyder

dwn loaded on my note 2, strange i select another launcher and my lock screen was gone but fblauncher was in it’s place. had to go into fblauncher setting’s and turn off facebook launcher then lock screen came back so all is good untill i activate fblauncher again problem reoccurs just a fyi .

    • will bartlett

you can set it up to not show home when the screen turns on. it brought me to the lockscreen after i did that.

  • Joseph Barrientos

if i was more into facebook this app would be perfect, i like the app, but i just dont care for FB anymore.

  • troy studnicka

It appears you have to be on a non rooted phone cause it say my phone isn’t compatible and I have an S3

    • http://www.facebook.com/DanielMcKenzieJTraynor Daniel McKenzie J. Traynor

You can be rooted to use FB Launcher.

  • chris

Will it work with my note 2 which has a custom rom?

    • RichFromBX

if you’ve gone to the point of running a custom rom it’s definitely not worth installing Home – you’ll lose all the goodness that comes with the rom and replace it with an underdeveloped product that may be good after another 3 or 4 updates

      • ian

It didnt seem to work on mine rooted with pacman rom sghi317 says its not supported yet

  • RichFromBX

agree with everyone that said they installed and then uninstalled 5min later – Home felt clunky and a pain in the ass to get to your other apps.

However, I do enjoy Chat Heads (well, any head I can get for that matter)…

  • http://twitter.com/TheDevelosigner Matt Digilio

Curious… I feel like a noob, but how do you uninstall this? I installed it on my S3 but when I go into Manage Apps, the Uninstall button is greyed out? My phone is rooted and running AOKP.

    • http://www.facebook.com/DanielMcKenzieJTraynor Daniel McKenzie J. Traynor

Use Titanium from the Play Store.

      • http://twitter.com/TheDevelosigner Matt Digilio

I was able to uninstall through the Play Store itself.

  • tu3218

installed it on my sgs3, 2 minutes later uninstalled. Maybe I didn’t give it enough time but my first impression: unbelievably stupid. Just launch the facebook app.

  • ItchyEyeball

Installed Home on my Note 2, tried it for 5 min, missed Nova launcher, uninstalled Home

  • The. Great. Cornholio!

Tried it on my Note II just to say I experienced it.
Even for Facebook diehards it seems limited. IMO, I could get more done through the Facebook app. Facebook home just looks/feels like live wallpaper that I can interact with. You can make it so that you can see your notification bar which is good but overall it feels like a widget or wallpaper gone wild. It’s funny that it gives you options for how much data it uses (High Medium Low). In the end, I wouldn’t even call it a home for Facebook diehards. What they should have made was a screensaver that pulled in your updates or displayed your uploaded photos.

  • jnt

Nice, Chat Heads integrates with SMS… Hopefully Google can take a hint with Babel!

  • Mason Lammers

    Downloaded. Tried. Saw. Hated. Uninstalled.

    • http://twitter.com/TheDevelosigner Matt Digilio

How did you uninstall? If I go into manage apps, the Uninstall option is greyed out.

      • The. Great. Cornholio!

Have you tried uninstalling while you’re in the Play Store?

        • http://twitter.com/TheDevelosigner Matt Digilio

Thanks – it works that way, just not through the Settings > Apps in Android.

      • Mason Lammers

I seen you figured this out already but I was able to uninstall in the settings menu. Not sure why that would have been grayed out for you.

    • PhoenixPath

It’s got a whopping 2 1/2 stars! Damn, lots of people out there treating this thing with kid-gloves apparently. I half expected all 1′s and a clamoring for the addition of negative scoring. :-P

If you think Alexander`s story is really cool,, 1 weak-ago my aunt’s step son got paid $8564 putting in a ninteen hour week an their house and the’re co-worker’s step-sister`s neighbour has been doing this for nine months and errned more than $8564 parttime On their laptop. use the information on this link, — Gig60.ℂOM

      • hoytaguilera

If you think Deborah`s story is incredible…, 4 weaks-ago my brother in law basically broght in $7568 workin 40 hours a month in their apartment and there buddy’s sister`s neighbour has done this for 9-months and actually earnt more than $7568 part-time from there computer. follow the steps on this link, — Gig60.cℴm

    • http://twitter.com/AndyDaGhost Andrew Garland

Yeah, I just checked it out. It’s totally awful. It was on my phone for all of 5 minutes, and that’s likely an exaggeration.

    • EvanTheGamer

Yep, exactly. I tried it on a SGS3 and was impressed for about 2.5 seconds, and then I went on with my day.

Guess it’s Nova Launcher Prime here to stay! And honestly, truth be told, that new Everything.Me home launcher offers WAY more than Facebook Home Launcher. Guess I just thought it would be the “Next Big Thing”, but apparently it isn’t. Damn. I was excited all week. Facebook Home did not live up to the hype. At all.

I know everyone expected the new home launcher to majorly flop, but considering the amount of time I spend on blasted Facebook(at home, at work, at the movie theater, in the rest room, at the gas station, at the art show, at Comic-Con, at the zoo, you get the point), I was really expecting something “MORE” from Facebook Home. A new and different kind of home launcher experience. Of course Facebook Home would only appeal to those that actually use the social media site. Ah well. Nothing to lose but my hope and patience. And time spent getting all excited over nothing this past week.

And with all of that said, maybe in a few months when they can work out all the kinks and make it “better”, I may give it another go. But until then, it’s all about Nova Launcher Prime!

the way to do it is go into Facebook>Settings>Enable Home> Install through play store when prompted

Edit: Works on my AT&T Note 2

Kellex, do that cricket thing you did yesterday for this

  • CaliToad

If you love Myspace, you’re really going to love Myspace Mobile for Android. Download the free application to stay connected with your friends… anytime, anyplace!

  • Billzilla2005

this is dumb, its just a live wallpaper with all your friends who annoy you most looking at you constantly

  • Shane Redman

So much for DL and their crickets from yesterday…..

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

It’s still news for quite a few people. But we still needed to take our shot at it yesterday. :P

      • Shane Redman

I dont know why….but this actually makes me mad. not that i would use it for longer than a day…but seriously. “we want to get facebook home on to as many devices as we can” ….but we wont support all devices from the get go. seems logical Zuck

    • derek connolly

what rom are you running? I like that status bar.

      • http://twitter.com/MJBailey14 Mike B

        AOKP with alloy blue theme.

  • Drew Chapman

I think this was facebooks idea to keep its users from saying goodbye and not using the app or visiting the site as often.

  • http://twitter.com/acogg Adam Coggins

Just showed in the online play store for me. Galaxy Note 2.

  • http://twitter.com/Bucknut89D Bob D

Tried facebook home for approx. 30 seconds, hated it, uninstalled. Success! As a side note, the new messenger with chat heads is phenomenal

  • Donnie M.

When installed, says not compatible with my note 2. I’m rommed running pacman ROM.

  • http://www.facebook.com/leif.myhrvold Leif Myhrvold

    It works on Gnote 2

  • Hunter Stephenson

The best way to get it to work is to open the link in your browser of choice and use the play store website. Couldn’t use the play store using a note 2

  • justin

    Now works on note 2!

  • Shane Redman

KILL IT WITH FI…..no…..FB deserves worse. Kill it with water *evil laugh*

  • ChristianJohnson

    • http://twitter.com/turdbogls Turdbogls

if you read ANYTHING about FB home, you would have seen that it is not available to tablets yet. and stop using that word that way….i have gay friends/family. it is offensive to me and them.

      • UndergroundWire

If I can like your comment more than once, I would have.

        • JoshGroff

I will like both of your comments, that way it’s kind of like liking his twice.

          • UndergroundWire

        • John

Elementary my dear Watson. He could either not get any clicks for no article posted -or- some clicks for 1 post.

        • PhoenixPath

“Site traffic is wayyyy down when there are alot of Facebook articles”

I’d love to see your statistics on that. Where might you be presenting them?

He puts way to much emphasis on knowing what your friends are doing. Just the way he stresses the point of facebook home, makes me uncomfortable.

  • EvanTheGamer

So when we’ll the Facebook Home .APK file be available to ALL devices(or most devices, like my Galaxy Nexus?)?

    • silver_arrow

      Give it a few minutes

      • EvanTheGamer

Okay, I will. But will ONLY just give it a few minutes.

        • silver_arrow

Well i know with the new playstore I saw it was being released when i went into class and when my class ended i checked and downloaded it sop maybe more then a few minutes like an hour or two at the max
