Now Playing Beta, a Fresh Take on an Android Music Player

Now Playing

Happen to be one of the people hoping to see a Google Music app redesign sometime in the future? Well, you are not alone. While we wait on Google to breathe some fresh air into their app’s design, there are developers out there that are making their own works of music app art, such as this one called, Now Playing

Now Playing is still in beta and doesn’t have access to your Google Music library, but if you do have music on your device already, it’s a great 3rd party player. Its design is minimal and simplistic, with small outlines bordering each artist and song title. What the app does quite well is bring attention to each album cover and even song lyrics. And if you don’t have an album cover for a particular album, don’t worry, it auto downloads them from the web via WiFi.

If you want to try out the Now Playing Beta, you can download it via the link below. To install, simply sideload it as you would any other application.

Download: NowPlaying6.apk

Via: XDA

Cheers Jason!

well, when I download and install it in my Nexus 4, It just stay no response..

  • Whoever took these screenshots has a pretty good taste in music.

  • Raven

I keep trying other music players. GoneMAD Music Player was the last. But, I always return to good old Poweramp. Nothing beats it so far.

  • looks great and same music collection as mine!

  • Elliot Kotis

Yes and I would love Android 5.0 to be similar to 4.2 but with a more Google Now look! BTW would this have the streaming feature of Google Music (I just got it in AUS and LOVE IT).

  • xMrRocknRollx

Whoever this developer is, he’s A-OK in my book with that Acacia Strain album.

    Viva La Metal!

  • VegasDerek

App has promise. It should check existing song tags for lyrics and album art. Genre is typically multiple categories, and seperated by a semicolon. An improvement would be to recognise existing tags which which likely exist in users with large music libraries. Power music users typucally tag music such that it is independent of player device.

Wow… this app is beautiful! Take the design of this app, functionality of PowerAmp and Google Music services and you have the perfect music player app. Also add in a little Tasker to auto turn down the music at initialization when headphones are plugged in.

  • Jordan Harrell

This is amazing. I love the simplicity. Now my default player.

  • Lucky Armpit

Whoever’s music playlist that is, you have an AWESOME selection. I’m a huge Otep fan and and I’m just starting to get into Acacia Strain. Metal FTW!

I think Google should buy power amp

  • Dear Google. Hire him and make Google Play Music like this.

  • Tom Z

If it doesn’t have access to your streaming music library, it should be compared to Google Music. I only use Google Music to play songs from my online library. I thought that was the whole idea behind GM.

  • Chad Marfo

It even syncs with GFS. Go over to Google Plus and thank Jack Underwood too.

  • needs to have a black theme also. too bright haha. but its so much SMOOTHER then google music

  • Many thumbs up for The Acacia Strain

  • MK20051

This is a little too bright for me. I would like something a little more battery friendly.

  • Lex_407

What I don’t get is, why is there 3rd party Google Music apps on iOS but, there isn’t one, that I know of on Android. Someone please explain to me.

    • Linda Mitchell

Hmm, that’s very strange. I always thought it was because of DCMA restrictions but apparently not.

  • George264

Oh wow. Oh wow. This is absolutely beautiful and amazing. This is how I want the Google Play Music to look. It matches the design of Now, and the new Store, and this is flat out the best looking music app I’ve seen to date. Will definitely use this from now on.

  • this will drain the galaxy nexus battery in five minutes!! lol

  • Clean…kinda reminds me of spotify’s UI

  • Phil Nolan

I love Google Music but for some reason it won’t just let me play an album, it keeps reverting back to some playlist it made up. Otherwise it’s great. This looks way too bright., needs a darker color scheme.

    Needs Google Music API!!!!

  • alan

Came here for The Dead Walk

  • Wow, take notes, Google!

  • Stevie Thunder

  • Dear Google: Please open up the Google Play Music API. We’d all appreciate it a lot!

    • EC8CH

yes, if updating your app is too much work, do this instead.

      • Pretty much. Additionally, I like options. As long as we’re all tied into Google’s system, MUST we use their apps? I don’t think we should have to.

      • It must be RIAA holding their hands back. Or something to do with DMCA.

  • realfoxm

    • Also, anyone with Protest the Hero in their music collection is a friend of mine. That band rules.

    • Cameron_Watt

      i thought the same thing!

  • Mallahet

Any idea if it finds and files the albums that you download to your phone from Play Music? I have Poweramp, and sadly that just files everything under “unknown”.

Actually, does anyone know of any music app that can do that?

    • doubleTwist. I’ve already feature requested it for Now Playing.

      • Mallahet

Thanks! I’ll have to check it out. Had it a long time ago on my OG Droid.

  • 🙂 Welcome good sir.

For all who like finding new holo driven apps, I recommend check this community out on G+

  • jakebites

I’m so happy you have The Acacia Strain’s best CD playing on your SS. Good man. 🙂

    • No doubt. By far their greatest work.

      • Gonna have to disagree with you buddy and say continent is their best release.

  • Greg Morgan

Beautifully done. This is how I envision Google Music looking.

  • Dan

Lyrics is something I hope to come to google now/music. It’d be cool to open up google now and have the lyrics to the song you’re listening to from google music show up real time. Kind of like soundhound.
