Thursday Poll: Going to Make Facebook Home Your Launcher of Choice?

fb10

So far, what I think is great on Facebook’s part is that they are not limiting this new experience to only those that buy an HTC First. Android users that currently own one of the five initially supported devices will be able to download Home from Google Play and immediately immerse themselves with status updates and pictures from friends. By taking this route, Facebook is truly trying to put this experience into the hands of as many people as possible. It may not seem that way yet, since the HTC First is an AT&T exclusive, but that was purely a business move.

With Home as your default launcher, you have the ability to access instant messages between friends no matter what you are doing on your device, look through your News Feed as soon as you unlock the device, and bookmark certain applications that you use more often than others. While Home does seem sort of like an extremely dignified widget, there are bound to be hundreds of thousands of users in no time at all.

Let us know down below if you plan on making Facebook’s Home your default launcher of choice. As a bonus, feel free to let us know why or why not in the comments section below. Personally, I am dying to hear everyone’s thoughts on this.

Going to switch over to Facebook Home as your launcher of choice?

You know, I use my phone for things other than Facebook. This is something for teeny boppers and people who NEED a life!

  • Michael

Honestly idk why no one is going to give this a chance. It looks cool. It’s definitely a cool alternative to what is currently out there. If nothing else maybe it’ll give some ideas to google on new ideas to do.

    • umataro42

You should probably keep in mind that DL readers are more likely than the general populace to have phones that it doesn’t support, like the Nexus 4 or the Galaxy Nexus, and likely got such a phone for either for the stock experience or to flash a ROM, both of which make them less likely to use a Facebook launcher.

That’s my reason, but the only “no” answer was “because I hate Facebook” so that’s how I voted.

      • Tim242

Most DL readers are not Nexus users. Do you not read the comments? Most have the phoned that it is being released for. Not that it will ever find a home on my Note 2!

        • Liderc

What? lol, have you ever seen the polls asking what phone we have here? The majority have a Nexus device, it was a good 70% that had the Galaxy Nexus until the Nexus 4 came out, now that percentage has been split between the two.

          • Tim242

More people on here have Note 2’s than Nexus 4’s. You forget that most users here are Verizon users. Then a large portion have GS3’s and motos.

        • umataro42

I didn’t write that most DL readers are Nexus users. Maybe I didn’t phrase it well but I was trying to say there is likely a higher percent of DL users who have a Nexus phone compared to the general Android phone owning populace. Hypothetical Example: if out of everyone, maybe 5% own a Nexus, then among DL readers it could be more like 25%. I don’t have any actual data to back this up though, its just speculation on my part based on the fact that DL features a custom ROM every Friday and often has articles about Mods, and other things that require root, and I stand by it.

          • Tim242

Since when does a custom ROM require a Nexus? I have owned about 10 Android phones, only one of them being a Nexus. I have rooted and put custom ROM’s on every one of them. Currently, I have a Verizon Note 2 running JellyBeans ROM. This was the featured ROM a few weeks back on Custom ROM Friday

          • umataro42

You seem to be reading more into my comment than what I’m actually saying. I just meant that since Nexus devices are generally easier to unlock and root, and DL often has articles that cater to unlocked and rooted users so it seemed safe to assume that a good number of DL readers are Nexus owners. I also think its safe to say that more Nexus owners would have unlocked and rooted their phones than GS3 or Note owners, partly because those 2 are more generally popular and the Nexus line is more popular with people who want something they can easily unlock and root. Again, no facts to back this up, just speculation.

          • Tim242

That is true to an extent. The thing to remember is that Nexus phones generally have limited carrier availability. Also, this is a Verizon centric site. Samsung phones are very easy to unlock. I got my Note 2 on launch day (Nov.29th). It was unlocked fully within a month. The S3 was even quicker than that. So while DL has a higher Nexus user base than the general public, it isn’t a majority or even close. Samsung phones are about as good as a Nexus for ROM’s.

          • umataro42

I was thinking a combination of the Nexus 4 and the Galaxy Nexus, which is the only Nexus phone Verizon has had (and ever will from the looks of it) and is also a Samsung, but you’re probably right about there being more GS3 owners than Galaxy Nexus since it had better specs and a slightly bigger screen.

  • Nicholassss

We’ve been working so long to get away from stuff like this, give me vanilla.

  • Michael Quinlan

I can’t even drum up the desire to give Facebook a try, much less some overblown home screen that assumes my existence is centered around Facebook. We really need to start calling these things what they are: antisocial networks. They suck people away from their real world relationships into an electronic world of imaginary friends and lives.

    • Liderc

Kind of like the comments section on a phone website…

  • RoadsterHD1

Facebook should not even be mentioned on this site, the numbers don’t lie. :)

  • fgonzo98

What better way to give Facebook access to ALL your personal information? No thanks…

  • Bionic

Is this going to take up the whole droid life show too?

    • Tim242

      Hahaha probably so.

  • Dorian Brooks

    JUST MAKE THE APP WORK!!!

  • Douch E Bagg

I am looking forward to another 8 articles about the Facebook Home thing. Keep ‘em coming!!

    • Tim242

      When it rains, it pours!

  • rosssimpson

I’ll probably stick with it if I use it after testing it out, although I do like my customisation a lot, just the pictures on my newsfeed are far more obscene and low quality than those portrayed in the example’s facebook provided. lol

  • Doan

I’m obligated to play with it, but I’m certain I won’t stick with it.

  • EvanTheGamer

“I will at least give it a try.”

    • Tim242

I’m sure you will. I can see you as someone who spends all day on Facebook.

      • EvanTheGamer

No, I do not spend all day on Facebook…that is because I spend all day on Twitter. ;)

  • http://www.pcprocare.com/ Barry Taylor

Why would anyone want pictures of food on their home screen?

  • Brian

Oh please. You have to try it before you can legitimately claim it sucks.

    ITT: Deluded people.

    • umataro42

I can make an educated guess based on the performance of the Facebook app, which I also don’t use because I find just going to the mobile website to be a better experience and less of a resource hog (it still runs in the background even if I have it set to never refresh on its own).

Also, there wasn’t a “No, because its not supported on my device and I don’t want to bother with a sideload.” option.

    • Tim242

Not everything applies to your logic. I can think of something immediately that I’ve never tried…and don’t need to try it to know it would suck. For a hint, see my avatar.

  • Microsoftjunkie

Definitely not, since i have a better Facebook Home or any social site as a “home” on my wp8.

  • Jroc869, Nexus-Life

    Hell to the naw!

  • Tyler Casilio

Tim, I’m not gonna beat around the bizzush, okay. I don’t like Facebook. It’s stupid, what most people post is stupid, and it’s just plain dumb. This Launcher is just taking away from what these phones have and what made them the best at one point. This is just gonna open a can of social phones, or launchers. It’s unnecessary. They all have an app that ALL need work. Not one of the social media apps are amazing or even great. I got a better idea. You wanna see what your BFF is doing right meow on
your phone, well here’s an idea. Since your already on your phone, why
don’t you just, I dunno, call them. Especially after they just posted
that they want to do something and you were just about to write back
“okay” you could just actually talk on the phone. Maybe?
I love smartphones Tim, and this isn’t a smartphone. This is an abomination of a smartphone. It’s an app that became a launcher.

  • Denvertoad

Enough of the Facebook coverage already. Hasn’t Samsung done something you can cover? ROM Friday??

    • Dorian Brooks

Preach on. I’d take a Huawei story right now.

      • Tim242

        √√√hahaha√√√

      • EC8CH

        this is funny

  • Dylan Patel

Ignore this comment I am stupid.

  • umataro42

I went with No, but I don’t hate Facebook, its good for keeping in touch with family and friends that I don’t get to see in person that often.

But I will say I hate their app, so I probably wouldn’t like Facebook Home either. I just use the mobile website if I’m on my phone and have a shortcut to the bookmark.

My full answer would be “no, even if it was available for my phone, but its not anyway”.

  • Brian_2112

I’ve seen five different polls (including this one) about Facebook Home…in every one of them, the majority says they won’t use it. Makes you wonder how many of those people will actually try it and maybe even like it…it’s a long shot, but I know there’s at least a few hypocrites out there. :p

Seriously, I like using Facebook, it works well for what I do. I’m not about to centralize my smartphone experience around it, though. A 4×2 widget is enough for me, thank you very much. My S II has enough clutter on the homescreen as it is.

  • http://twitter.com/NotAdamCollins Adam Collins

How about, “No, the Facebook app is enough for me.”? I don’t hate facebook but I’m definitely not going to use the launcher.

  • http://twitter.com/Defenestratus Defenestratus

I will personally defenestrate any phone that I see running this crap.

And yes, that means YOUR phone.

  • Russ

OMG! If I hear Facebook Home one more time today I’m going to throw my chair through the window.

    • Tim242

It’s too late for my window. This one drove me over the edge.

  • Joshua Percell

No. The only reason I still use Facebook is that my girlfriend uses it.

  • http://www.industrializeme.com/ Dan

I don’t even use the FB widget, so why would I use it as my launcher. Pass, I find facebook feeds atrocious and intrusive. Making that the center of my attention seems trivial and wasteful when there are so many other more important new feeds I’d rather pay attention too.

  • Lars Callahan

Looking for my polling answer: Aw, HELL no!

Please add to poll options. Thx.

  • Bionic

next up, the Tumblr phone, so 15 year old girls can self shot their boobs and send those pics to everyone at high school easily.

    • NIGHTSCOUT

Or like some other guy said yesterday, imagine a reddit phone. Karma Whoring galore

  • Tsabhira

Android is supposed to be about culling this sort of crap from my phone, not turning it into its core. So…. nopes! Not a chance in hell.

  • Tony Byatt

There are probably going to be ads all over this thing…PASS…

  • NIGHTSCOUT

Well I HATE Facebook, and everything it stands for. Facebook is a great example of a wolf in sheep’s skin.

    • Bionic

sheep skin condoms are the bomb

      • NIGHTSCOUT

        Blister much?

        • Bionic

im kidding, condoms suck, bareback is where its at

          • NIGHTSCOUT

Famous words from Patient Zero :D

          • Bionic

            LOL,

    • ERIC REED

      What exactly do you hate?

      • NIGHTSCOUT

Exploitation of people’s trust, borderline illegal data collection. Using people’s need to socialize, as a tool to harvest valuable private data. Need I say more???

        • ace

          Completely agree.

        • ERIC REED

If I hated every company that collects data on me and gives some of it away I would be without auto, home and health insurance. Wouldn’t have cable or cell phone service and wouldn’t use the Internet at all.

          • NIGHTSCOUT

Facebook is the largest offender by a margin. If you are not aware of this, maybe you should do some research.

          • ERIC REED

So doing it less makes it okay?

          • NIGHTSCOUT

To an extent, yes. Also, straight forward privacy policies is a good idea. Have you read Facebook’s privacy policy lately?

          • ERIC REED

I will admit to never reading these policies, I hit accept and go about what I’m doing. But the selling of our information is despicable, no matter the amount sold. Major corporations are permitted to do so, it’s the laws that the lobbyist have been permitted to push through!

          • NIGHTSCOUT

            Agreed.

          • ERIC REED
      • http://twitter.com/rbrtwillis Robert Willis

        Its User Interface.

  • Guest

Seriously. That picture looks like an iPhone. If you don’t see it then I don’t know what’s up with your eyes.

    • Bionic

      we agree on something

      • Austin Warren

Looks like disqus screwed up. But I am glad that we do.

        • Bionic

          LOL

  • Liderc

Of course not, but do I think it’s a bad idea? No. It has its purpose and it’ll find its audience, which is young teens.

    • Bionic

its funny, when i was a young teen i was playing baseball and getting my first handjob, then blowwjob, not playing with a phone, lmao

      • NIGHTSCOUT

        Facebook+sexting= teen orgasm

        • Bionic

          indeed

      • Liderc

Teens use phones now, like all of us, teens just also spend a lot of time on facebook as well. My father fished when he was a teen, and hunted, I spent my time building computers and playing video games. Time changes things, you aren’t special. The X phone isn’t real.

        • Bionic

          really dude? really?

        • NIGHTSCOUT

Dang, that last sentence made my jaw drop….You sir, are an ashole :D

        • Dr_Buttballs

Last sentence made the comment. Well done.

      • umataro42

        that’s some impressive flexibility.
        j/k

      • rosssimpson

I’m sure your dad wasnt playing on a smartphone when you were a teen though…. times change buddy

  • Bionic

Poll fail. you need an option that says “no, the app is all the facebook i need” the only “no” option you gave people is “i hate facebook”

Its like saying “are you going to make this girl your sexual partner of choice?” and the only no option is “no i hate females”

    just saying

    • umataro42

I’d make it “No, the app or mobile site is all the Facebook I need”. I’ve found the app to be more trouble than it’s worth, and the launcher looks to be more integrated, so I imagine it would be much much worse.

    • mustbepbs

I thought it was a fitting poll option.

  • zeiroe

The main thing that is going to test my patience with Facebook Home is: How well can I use Google Now with it. From the livestream, it doesn’t look very promising.

  • Austin Warren

Need an option like “Facebook is like herpes. Nobody wants it.”

    • http://twitter.com/jcardona1 jcardona

Downvoted, just because you’re the downvote queen of DL.

      • Austin Warren

I know right? I enjoy it. Bring em on! Let’s see if I can break a record.

        • NIGHTSCOUT

I was that way with reddit karma, before quitting altogether. Reddit has turned into Sodom and Gomorrah. Except instead of pedophiles and rapists, there’s karma whores.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=705034 Jeff Simpson

I won’t be using it for the same reason I won’t use Angry Birds as my launcher.

  • LionStone

Not interested…don’t even have the FB app on my phone anymore. But every time HTC gets mentioned, it will only bring more attention and awareness to them…leading to more sales, which should keep them going on their comeback.

  • saimin

I would rather have Google Reader as a home screen launcher

  • http://www.facebook.com/JasonKWhite Jason Kenneth White

FIRST! IN FRONT OF ETHAN! ME! LOOK HERE!!!!! FIRST!!!!!!

  • Sara Frey

It doesn’t even support widgets. Laughable.

    • Marsg

Facebook home is just one giant annoying widget.

  • Daniel

No way! I’m VERY happy with ADW EX on my device and would feel much to limited in customization using a simplified launcher like this that’s basically letting FB take over your phone and target ads to you right on your lock/homescreens.

    • Clay S.

ADW? stuck in 2009 i assume.

      • Joshua Percell

Or maybe his device doesn’t support one of the newer launchers.

      • Brian

ADW was recently updated and is still light weight (for me, uses less battery than Nova or Apex), feature-rich without being preposterously bloated with tacky, unnecessary bells and whistles… It’s still the best in my book.

But I’m curious, and will definitely DL the FB launcher and see what Better Battery Stats has to say about it after a couple days.

  • Trevor

I don’t necessarily hate Bookface (though I wish everyone would just use Google+), but I give a big HELLS NO to using their launcher.

  • NemaCystX

This is just Facebooks attempt at getting more data out of you when your not posting to Facebook. If you thought your data was unsafe when Carrier IQ was involved, Facebook Home is probably worse since it gets system level access

  • https://twitter.com/#!/doomstang Doomstang

I’ll give it a try for a few minutes and see how bad it is. I expect it to need a lot more work to become a daily driver so we’ll see.

  • http://www.facebook.com/BenUdkow Ben Udkow

I need a “NO WAY, but it’s not because I hate Facebook, it’s because this is a horrible launcher” option. But I voted the current “No Way” one anyways…

  • dhirensavalia

I don’t hate Facebook; however, I do not use Facebook enough to need something like Facebook Home.

    • Beezey

The poll should’ve had a regular “No” answer.

      • Flyinion

Definitely. I use FB but will not use the launcher. Ever. I’m totally happy with Nova. I don’t want FB exploded all over my phone when I’m not using it.

      • Sofia Carter

just before I saw the bank draft which said $8016, I didn‘t believe …that…my friends brother could realey making money part-time from there

pretty old laptop.. there uncles cousin has done this for less than 18 months and by now repaid the dept on their house and bought a brand new Mercedes. we looked here, . http://www.GoogleProjects2013now.qr.net/kg1x

    • j__h

The person who makes the polls for Droid-life needs to stop adding commentary to the poll answers. Yes, No, Maybe (or something similar) is much better.

      • http://twitter.com/jdrch jdrch

        This.

    • http://www.facebook.com/spencer.kingman Spencer Kingman

There should’ve been a “I would try it out, but my phone isn’t supported” option… :/

      • angermeans

Hell, it’s Android. I would bet every phone will be supported soon thanks to the great devs

        • Formerly Known As Mousecop

You clearly don’t own a Thunderbolt or EVO 4G

      • michael arazan

Thank You FaceBook for not supporting my Nexus, first time ever I didn’t want support for Nexus

    • http://twitter.com/marctobolski Marc Tobolski

Agreed – the poll questions are biased and insulting. I don’t hate Facebook but I also don’t want it as my launcher.

      • chihova

        How is it insulting?

    • http://twitter.com/jdrch jdrch

      +1.

        well played sir

  • CaptainHowdy13

While I do like that launchers are getting support by bigger companies, I have no need to immerse myself in so much Facebook.

  • Inquizitor

I’ll give it a try. Don’t get why some people are so extremely against facebook. Their extensive control of your data and less-than-stellar privacy record isn’t too different from Google.

    • Pedro

I think the difference is that FB wants to sell your data for cash, whereas Google wants to use your data for internal use only. FB can’t really use what they know. They have to sell it to someone. Google gives you Now, Maps, GMail, etc. to enhance your life, while sending you a few targeted ads.
The devil you know vs the devil you don’t.

      • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

Actually, the difference for me is Google benefits me directly by sharing my data with them, and facebook does not.

  • http://twitter.com/BigDaddyBesbris Ethan Besbris

      Please die in a fire.

      • http://www.facebook.com/carlos.lopez.77736310 Carlos Lopez

Considering that this is somewhat related to the htc first i dont find it all that annoying lol

    • ZzZzZzZ

Congratulations!! Take your dime and get the hell out of here!!

    • calculatorwatch

Strange that that’s only the second time I’ve seen that on a post about the HTC First and it’s already gotten old.

      • http://twitter.com/BigDaddyBesbris Ethan Besbris

That actually wasn’t even my intention, lol.
