Facebook Announces New Android Skin/Launcher/App Pack Dubbed “Home”

fb home

It’s official, Facebook has announced their new “home on Android.” It’s called Home and is essentially a third party launcher or skin or pack of apps that can be installed on any Android device to make people come first, rather than apps (if that made sense). As expected, Facebook wants to become the focal point of your device every time you unlock it, so having a launcher take control is a major step in the direction of making that happen.  We’re still taking in the live event (which you can watch here) and will continue to update this post live.

-So the app is indeed a third party launcher, but it’s an intense one. This takes over the top layer of Android. It’ll work on tablets, but not for a couple of months.

-Here are the first few compatible devices, launching April 12.

-HTC and AT&T also came on stage to announce the HTC First, which is essentially the first Facebook phone.

Facebook can’t even get their app right and now they want people to use a whole suite of apps as the main environment of their phone? I don’t think so..

  • joejoe5709

Obviously I think this is crap. Updating the FB app would have been fine for me. But I think it’s awesome that this is not even remotely possible on an Apple product. I can hear now the FB addicted Apple users drooling on their keyboards. Even better… they’ll love it and want it – we have it and we HATE it. Lol. This is the beauty of Android.

  • No nexus 4….?

  • droidftw

I use Facebook religiously (I’m 16 and everyone refuses to use Google+) but I would never use a phone with this. I find Touchwiz and Sense intrusive enough, this is just over the top.

  • dylan84

I swear to god…This better be separate from the Facebook app.

    • joejoe5709

The mobile site is still faster than the app anyway…

      • CapnShiner

Not on my GS3 it isn’t. Plus the app has features the mobile site lacks. I reinstalled the app a few updates after they launched the Android native version.

Awesome Dude Time to retire the KIN!

How will all that background updating affect the battery life?

    • Ghee Buttersnaps

Or is battery life a taboo subject when dealing with HTC?

    • Dave

Your battery percentage readout turns into a basketball shot clock.

    GTFO!!!!! NOOOOO!!!!!! No nonono Nooooo

Chatheads was the only part that caught my attention. I use the previously used app button all the time to check and respond to messages but sometimes ignore them bc i don’t want to have to switch back and forth. Seems like a great solution as long as it doesn’t cause performance issues with the app in use.

    • MikeCiggy

I agree. The chat experience they outlines is definitely ideal

  • The Gooch

Is this the part where they tell us that they’re improving the basic Facebook app too?

  • To me, this makes Google look foolish. Where are they at with their own G+ integration on their own OS? Kudos to FB for showing what can be done.

    • CapnShiner

Google understands that many people would not want something as obtrusive as this. I think Google+ integrates into Android about as much as it needs to. This rumored Babel app/service that will combine all their chat services will be the last piece of the puzzle, IMO.

  • Edwin Mann

I’ll take a form of chat heads. Other then that Facebook home is a no go for me

  • Bengman

This seems to be a hole lot of nothing. The ability to choose you apps and how you see them is what’s great about smart phones. The fb thing will make your phone less user friendly, why bother?

  • Syraz/Azilla

man, all I want is a tablet version of their app….come on this just looks/seems silly

  • Austin Warren

Even though I don’t like this, suck on that, apple.

  • Adam Wolfgang

No way in hell! I don’t even use the FB app, just the mobile site in a browser on my phone.

  • John E. Jablonski

Ok..I know it’s the dreaded FB, but, based solely on the screenshots above, parts of it don’t seem like a horribly bad idea. For example, it does seem like a nice way to get a bunch of people together to pick a time and place for a movie.

For all the bitching that we hurl at google for the often haphazard and disjointed nature of some of their apps (voice, chat, talk, etc), this does not look nearly as bad as I expected. It’s seems like they spent a lot of time polishing things (look and feel, integration of various aspects, etc).

Tho I’d much rather see that stuff integrated into the app itself, as there’s no way in hell I’m installing a FB launcher.

  • Austin Warren

F you Facebook. Just another reason to have more people ask me to water their garden.

    • CapnShiner

LOL…people still play those stupid farm games?

  • Detonation

Despite the common negative opinion here, I’m sure there are thousands of teens and other people obsessed with facebook that can’t wait to get their hands on this.

  • There’s actually a possibility of a person using this? Seriously?

    • You know there are other people in the world than you, right?

      • Austin Warren

        6,973,738, 432 other people.

    • Yup. More then just one, also.
I’m sure more then a few of us have friends that are on Facebook constantly and this will beneift them in their quest to become completely and utterly obsessed if they aren’t already.

  • FelisLachesis

Oooh geez. I use Greenify to freeze FB when I’m done with it, because I want Zuck to have less control over my phone, not more.

Just tell me when they said FB for Android went through a complete rewrite and is now fast. Of that doesn’t happen, this will be a waste of a press conference.

  • RaptorOO7

There is no way in hell I will ever buy an Android phone with Facebook front and center and in the drivers seat controlling what I see and how I interact with my device. I use FB as little as possible and see no real benefit for this to exist.

    • Floski

Well then, it’s not designed for you… But plenty of people use the hell out of Facebook.

And replacing this seems like it’d be pretty easy. Just… get a new launcher?

      • Sam’s Son

Plenty of people as in Floski?

        • PhoenixPath

…or as in the 1.06 billion unique active users reported each month….

          • Floski

Weird right? It’s like the crowd that says “Choice is good! Android!” is suddenly “I WOULDN’T USE THIS AND SO NO ONE ELSE WOULD. IT SUCKS.”

It’s just another choice people. No one is going to force you to buy this thing. And yeah, I think Facebook has a decent size user base. Call me crazy.

“installed on any Android device to make people come first, rather than apps”

ok let the terrible and inappropriate jokes begin….don’t disappoint me.

    • CapnShiner

      There’s an app for that?

  • does anybody even care about Facebook anymore I mean come on even our parents and grandparents have moved on to Twitter or other forms of social media

  • I tried using it i keep getting a load screen every time i unlock my phone

    • How? It’s not even in the Play Store yet :/
