Report: New Nexus 7 Arriving in July, Google Chooses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Over NVIDIA’s Tegra

nexus 7 retail

According to a report out of Reuters this evening, Google will launch a new version of its popular Nexus 7 tablet this July. The tablet will be made by Asus once again, but will use one of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors this time around in favor of NVIDIA’s Tegra line, “for power reasons,” one of their sources said. The new N7 will also sport a display with a higher resolution and a casing with a much smaller bezel than the current model.

Outside of those details, little is known including price. But if the current Nexus 7 is anything to go off of, it’s unlikely that this new Nexus 7 will drop in at anything higher than a couple hundred dollars. The current models retail for $199 (16GB) and $249 (32GB), so as this new model is introduced and the old ones are discontinued, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it slide into those exact price points. Remember that Google isn’t trying to make money off of the sales of their devices, they are expecting to make most of their profits off of either mobile ads or the sale of products through Google Play.

With Google I/O arriving in mid-May, there is a good chance that we’ll see this new Nexus 7 on stage. The original Nexus 7 debuted at last year’s Google developer conference, so why not bring us version 2 in the same environment.

Whatever is not in favor Tegar exclusives

  • feztheforeigner

Please be at Google IO….please be at Google IO…..please be at Google IO!

  • rawwrrrrsheit

yea…im gonna need a 32gb version or greater

  • coolsilver

Well maybe I will consider this as an upgrade to my original galaxy tab

  • Brandon Golway

I’ve been debating on just getting a cheap tablet to put in my car instead of getting a $400-700 touchscreen radio installed and I was going to get an old Galaxy Tab for around $150 but I may hold off a bit and just get the new nexus 7 and put my old 32 gb N7 in the car.

  • Joe Sheffer

You had me at “much smaller bezel”. Oooh, the excitement!

  • JMonkeYJ

cannot wait. this will probably be an insta-buy for me.

    a couple concerns:
    – i hope the move away from Tegra doesn’t limit game selection too much. gaming is definitely one of my primary uses of the N7. it seems like there aren’t as many Tegra exclusives these days, and there are even some Qualcomm exclusives (the pretty entertaining Oil Rush).

    – very worried about smaller bezels. the N7 bezels were about as small as i want on a 7″ tab. i’ll just have to trust Google on this one…

  • chris125

Can’t wait, loved my nexus 7 until the 4.2.2 update and hopefully this will be even better

    • Trevor

Same with me. This thing was great until 4.2.2 essentially ruined it (factory reset helped a little bit though). Hope they hit the nail on the head the second time around!

  • LionStone

After the last update to 4.2.2, my N7 took a hit on battery life. I could barely make it across coast to coast with 50% now, whereas before I could make it with only 30-40%. Tighter bezel, oh yea! Snapdragon? Yes!!

  • Austin Warren

Let’s hope for zero quality control issues this time.

    • Yoyo

We hope for that every time. In fact we shouldn’t have to hope for something like that at all.

      • Austin Warren

        Never happens with ASUS

        • JMonkeYJ

          N7 was made by Asus…

          • Austin Warren

and that had a ton of QC problems.

  • Hatyrei

    put some camera pls… 🙂

    • JBartcaps

NO, I literally point and laugh at people that bring tablets(specifically iPads) to sporting events or venues to take pictures. You look like a complete idiot holding that thing trying to focus on taking a picture, use a camera or your smartphone, not a tablet.

      • Hatyrei

An idiot, dolt, or dullard is a mentally deficient person, or someone who acts in a self-defeating or significantly counterproductive way. So tell me… how ist using tablet’s camera is looking like an “idiot”? Some people are just afraid of change… rofl. Because it’s strange and not common. lol.

        • JBartcaps

No, you look like an idiot holding a tablet up.

          • Hatyrei

So holding a tablet up while taking some pictures or vids looks like an idiot? ROFL. Pointing and laughing at random people looks like more like an idiot to me. If u read the definition again. lol 🙂

          • JBartcaps

Cool definition, “mentally deficient person”, someone who thinks taking pictures with a tablet is better than a camera. “significantly counterproductive” someone who uses a tablet that isn’t made for taking pictures rather than using a real camera, also much easier to carry a camera than a tablet. Goodbye

          • Hatyrei

So if some who thinks and prefer using a tablet to take pictures is a “mentally deficient” person? Pointing and laughing at random people looks more like it. ” Literally” . So tablet’s that has built in camera isn’t made for taking pictures? ROFL. You’re argument is of a child. How is using a tablet with a camera is ” significantly counterproductive”? ROFL. Acting like a monkey ” pointing and laughing” fit’s that criteria ,. rather than acting like a decent person. lol. Good Bye.

          • jsf6262

            Calm down children.

          • Dain Laguna

            use your smartphone.

        • Dain Laguna

no…taking pictures with a tablet is becoming super common. i just dont understand why folks purposefully want subpar pictures.

i visited dc this past weekend and people were doing this everywhere. its not about being afraid of change…its folks who are deliberately making a silly choice. your smartphone has a camera for a reason.

          • Hatyrei

Because those folks choose / prefer to use tablets. Purposely? How would you know. Did u asked them? What’s available or what’s convenient for them might not fit for you. Sub-par to P&P /DSLR cameras? Yes Smartphones? Not really,. why? Becasue newer tablets got 8MP cameras that is comparable to your Smartphones. It’s all about what those folks prefer not what u prefer.

          • mark

But if it’s at best comparable, what’s the point? People might as well use a smartphone that they have on them all the time – it seems pointless to increase the cost of a big tablet with a camera that isn’t any better. And if I do have room for something larger than a phone, then a dedicated camera would be far better quality. Given that the Nexus 7 is also meant to be low cost, it seems a bad idea to waste money on something that only a minority will use. (And yes, I’m afraid I do think that people look silly, simply because of the huge size of tablets, despite it still being a low quality camera – even SLRs are smaller. They look like people taking a photo with a Victorian camera…)

          • Hatyrei

I didn’t know you’re a psychic ,. how would you know that the general population have the best smartphone with them all the time? Guessing are we? rofl. It’s a matter of choice. But 1 thing I’m sure of…those folks that prefer to use their tablet’s camera did choose to do so.Because they have reasons that you might think isn’t acceptable.” Close minded much”? lol. It’s not pointless to increase the cost of a product if it offers “more” what it used to be. Price should also be competitive in today’s market. How would you know only a minority would use it? rofl Assuming are we? Lol…. LOL. You think people who used tablet’s camera silly? ROFL. Afraid of change are we? Low quality camera? Have you tried the newer tablets with high-end cameras? Yes it can’t compete to DSLRS & PS cameras. Those folks who uses tablets w/ cameras think it has some advantages or they just choose/prefer to do so. All the people in this world doesn’t think like you or me. You can keep you’re own jokes and stop being judgemental.

  • shocked there wont be a rear facing camera

    • Futbolrunner

      Where did you see that?

      • Austin Warren

The first one didn’t have one and it doesn’t need it. The back is perfect and a camera would ruin it.

        • EC8CH

yep, never felt the need for one myself

        • I’d like to see a back camera. You might not use it for taking pictures, but it could be useful for Augmented Reality.

  • Bionic

Google I/O things im looking forward to.

    – X phone
    – Nexus 7 (2)
    – Key Lime Pie preview (people who are experts in this stuff highly doubt it’ll be released in May)

    – Google Glass

    • Rodeojones000

Assuming it’s not the same device as the X Phone, I’m also looking forward to info regarding the next Nexus phone.

      • Larizard

nah, Nexus are usually announced around Thanksgiving in time for the Holidays.

      • EC8CH

xphone… the next nexus… whatever, just make it available on Verizon pleeeeeease.

        • Steve Benson

Don’t hold your breath for a Verizon release.

          • EC8CH

yeah… I’ll just hold my gnex instead.

        • sc0rch3d

          mynexphone? 🙂

        • At the rate things are going, you’ll be lucky to see the Nexus 4 on Verizon by the time they release the Nexus 5 everywhere else.

  • Bionic

No surprise. I love my N7 and the Tegra 3 inside is fine but I can only imagine the awesomeness of it if it had a snapdragon inside.

  • James Jun

    So it begins…

Bring on the I/O leaks. My body is ready.

    • that’s what she said

      • Diablo81588

She said bring on the I/O leaks?

        • EC8CH

she likes tech rumors she does

        • Futbolrunner

She likes the leaks..so does R. Kelly.

  • yummy

“in favor of”??, perhaps ‘instead of’ would
be better? Or maybe more coffee
for me, yes, more coffee.. Nurse!!!

    • Larizard

thanks, that section make me go “hmmm…” as well.

    • Maybe HE should have been drinking coffee instead of booze 😉

  • this year’s Google I/O is gonna be HUGE .. can’t wait for it

  • skg

so if a 2nd gen Nexus 7 is on the way .. should we hope for a 2nd gen Nexus 10 to also be debuting sometime this year?

    • Bionic

      likely in time for christmas

    • Austin Warren

Hopefully. The nexus 10 desperately needs a new processor and GPU.

      • Dain Laguna

        for what? because of benchmarks?

        • Austin Warren

No because it obviously can’t handle the display. This is common for most high res things.

    • j

I would expect it, but again, not until later in the season. N10 is too new for refresh

  • michael arazan

    This is old news

Google announced this back in February that they will not use Tegra chips in the N 7

    • Bionic

      Was not confirmed

Don’t make a wrong turn. Oh wait, that’s West Virginia.

          • There’s only a few places in NC where “don’t make a wrong turn” applies. One would be Fayetteville and the other would be Winston-Salem. 😉

          • wakefinance

i used to live in winston and that’s absolutely true! one minute you’re in a neighborhood where you can’t afford the houses until you get your inheritance, next minute you’re in the ghetto

I’m so glad they went with the Qualcomm 600 chip.

    • Justin Swanson

Is it the Qualcomm 600? The post doesn’t say that, couldn’t it be on of their other chips?

      • sdny8

Snap dragon 800 seems unlikely in a budget tab. Snapdragon pro seems pretty dated for a summer release. I think 600 makes the most sense.

        • Bionic

this, it’ll be the 600 likely clocked at 1.7 or MAYBE 2 GHZ if we’re lucky

          • Austin Warren

            Not like Ghz matters anyways

    • jolt.ball

Its Qualcomm 800 chip. says the Wikipedia page of Snapdragon.

    • jolt.ball

Its Snapdragon 800. Update from Wikipedia page..

  • TheFirstUniverseKing

Sucks for those expecting to play Tegra-exclusive games. I hope Chainfire’s working on his app for Jellybean support.

    • Abhijeet Mishra

I asked him on IRC when Jelly Bean first released, and he said it needs a complete rewrite and it isn’t exactly on the cards for him. But let’s hope he is working on it.

    • Bionic

The tegra games were cool for about a minute, then not.

      • agreed. but i have never really been a mobile gamer….sooooo

    • Dain Laguna

lol tegra exclusive. thats got to be the biggest letdown of this soc. we get may some cool effects, but most of the great games out there run worse on the n7….or are adjusted to a lower res to compensate.

i wanted to pull for nvidia…but at this point im all for a qualcomm chip

  • Qbancelli

    I want one.

  • ChristianJohnson

I’m kinda curious what they’ll call it. The new Nexus 7? 7.1? The whole number Nexus thing will get thrown off a bit with the new Nexus phone.

    • Bionic

it’ll be simply the Nexus 7 (2nd generation)

      • joseph pastor

They could make it 7 squared, and then grow each generation “exponentially” Same with the phone and 10. maybe, idk.

        • PSchrades

          the oldddd Nexus 49

    • Austin Warren

      Nexus 7S

  • Brandon Lang

Perfect, especially with my Xoom pretty much dead now this is great news

    • JBartcaps

Mine has dust on it, too much lag to be useable

  • Where do I sign up???

  • I’m curious which Snapdragon chip they’ll use. The S4 Pro or the 600?

    • Bionic

      600 is likely

  • S2556

I will be buying this tab for sure

  • ßen Murphy

    I’m first because I’m restless. =)
