Preview of New Google Play Version 4.0

new google play 4

The Google Play store is an ever-evolving marketplace that has seen its fair share of changes throughout the last few years. It was once incredibly fussy and difficult to navigate while lacking features, but over time, has become much more polished with an image-heavy layout that has likely helped Google push products from apps to magazines to movies and music. The last time we saw a major change was back in July of 2011, though. Since then, we have seen a number of tweaks to make it fit new design guidelines for Jelly Bean and Ice Cream Sandwich, but overall, it hasn’t changed all that much.

Today, I’m happy to show you Google Play 4.0, and the next big UI overhaul.

New Look

new google play1

As you can see from these screenshots, the entire thing has been redone from a UI perspective. It’s more Holo themed than ever, uses new fonts as category section titles, bigger images, and what I can only describe as a Google Now box-style item container. Individual pages for apps, movies, etc. are all filled with bigger images and a much cleaner design. The layouts of most pages, including search results, remain mostly the same, however, the eye candy is everywhere. Google is using text to separate sections, but then throws big beautiful images and color in your face to grab your attention.

Gone is the dark box-styled home page – in is a much more minimal and clean, well, everything.

There is no telling when we’ll see this new version of 4.0.16. As the video indicates, most of the new pages are not live at this time. We’ll keep an eye on it over the next few weeks and hope that we start to see some movement, which in turn should mean that the mass rollout to everyone will happen.

Also, as I dig through it, I’ll be sure to update you with any new features that I stumble across.

In the mean time, what do you guys think of the new Google Play?

  • Jack Roberts

    I couldn’t give a crap if stuffs broken just leak the apk please :-) :-) :-) :-)

  • http://twitter.com/rschleg Rob Schlegel

FINALLY. I hope they update the website and Play Music too. These things have looked like hot trash for so long.

  • foghorn67

Ugh, I’m going to flamed for this. But why talk with your hands when trying to show software? Also, 40 seconds in, and still talking…with hands?

  • Ben Baggley

Looks awesome, I can’t wait to see Android 5.0 now. Also, what are the little menu buttons on each item for?

    • Shane Redman

Maybe to put on your wish list?

  • Fatty Bunter

    STOP SAYING “DOT”

  • http://twitter.com/ChrisCorp ChristopherCorpening

I’m going to say that I don’t like it that much. Reason being, they put the buttons (update/uninstall, etc.) too close together. Also, the sections of “What’s New” and “Description” are not defined enough to tell they are separate areas. Maybe I’ll just have to get use to it, but it’s doesn’t like as fancy and “shopper-esque” as the old Play Store.

  • Adam Neighbors

    Very Google Now “Card-esque”.

  • mikeym0p

It’d be cool if they let you slide past ‘all’ and see all the apps installed on your other devices.

  • Justin Winker

So… Any chance of getting the APK for this?

  • Simon

Try it out on a tablet, I really want something different then just a blown up phone ui

    • http://katzmatt.com/ Matt Katzenberger

      This.

  • Bill

Will this be released before Google I/O in May or will this be announced in May?

  • Jay C. Ortiz

What do the menu buttons on the side of each result do?

  • Asimoalex

Did they bring back “my purchase”??

  • sonicemerald

i don’t care that this might be broken… i just want to use this for myself… it’s so pretty! i should go figure out where google keeps their apks… or something.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aarontrevor Aaron Sentell

    YESSSS.

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

This looks so much easier to navigate around. I love the tabs.

  • http://www.isaiahjroberts.com/ Isaiah J Roberts (Izzy)

Looking good! I’m hopeful that we’ll see all the Google apps continue to become more cohesive (here’s looking at you Maps, Music). This update bodes well for the coherence of the entire Android OS.

  • Chris Hollenbeck

Do you have the camera on your head….?

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

LMFAO!!!!! the camera is on a stand that is infront of him.

  • T4rd

Still no way to just view purchased apps?!

    • http://twitter.com/BigDaddyBesbris Ethan Besbris
      • T4rd

Yeah, I have that. It’s just retarded that it’s required in the first place to view purchased apps. This functionality used to be in the old Market app, but they removed it in the Play store for some reason.

        • http://twitter.com/BigDaddyBesbris Ethan Besbris

I agree. Pretty dumb of Google. I’ve got it side-by-side with the regular app. Meh.

  • hasbrobot

would be nice to see my purchases again….

  • Ryan Northrup

    Looks good.

  • Adam Emshwiller

looks like the Google now UI is going to be the new android 5.0 UI theme. i like!

    • http://scribblepeople.net Mike

if that was the case, that’d be sweet

      • mgamerz

it’ll also be all sorts of a pain in the ass for developers

    • Ryuuie

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking. Get out of my head.

In all seriousness though…how could they pull something like that off? The leaker from a few days ago claims that 5.0 is so big in terms of change that it’ll take Samsung a while to update even the S4 to the changes.

If that’s true…what really changed and how would you put Now into an OS UI that’s pleasing?

      • bloomtronzero

        What leaker?

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

What did Duarte say? He’s only “1/3 of the way there”… oh boy.

    • Austin Warren

That would be weird. But I’ll take anything they give us.

    • Chris

You mean holo? Of course. Has been since Android 3.0

  • Edward Smith

Wonder how they got it or if they will share if for previewing.

  • Tyler Casilio

Kellex, do you think that this may be a preview of what 5.0(Key Lime Pie) has in store?

    • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

The Keep app is definitely a preview of KLP, as is the 4.2 clock app.

  • Tyler Casilio

Yeah I’m liking this. Reminds me of the updated Slacker radio UI. Even though I feel like they really were the ones that just did the Google UI thing but lol

  • http://twitter.com/A2Eric Eric S

I prefer the current ‘dark theme’. Anything white looks horrible IMHO.

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

U must own a HTC device. GAWD, do i hate the settings menu on Sense.

      • JetBlue

What’s wrong with it? I personally like it way better than I liked Touchwiz’s

    • EC8CH

I hear what you’re saying… black themes look particularly sweet on AMOLED displays like the G-Nex.

    • Chris

Same. Dark themes are easy on the eyes and are better for battery life.

  • Capt. Crunch

Looks great now we just need to get 3rd party app developers to design apps for Android that actually look like they fit into the ecosystem instead of looking like another ios app. Ex. Instagram.

  • Pedro

    Where’s the pimp gold watch?

    • Abgar Musayelyan

      dont ‘belie me, ju’ watch!

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Hah, using the Pebble for a minute since it just got updated. :P

  • http://profiles.google.com/lolshooter michael steinmetz

i wish they would bring back the purchased section

    • http://twitter.com/apa1102 Apa Chen

+1 that the only thing I want!

      • http://twitter.com/BigDaddyBesbris Ethan Besbris
        • http://twitter.com/apa1102 Apa Chen

with root and modified Play Store? no, thanks :)

          • http://twitter.com/BigDaddyBesbris Ethan Besbris

What’s your issue with root? Lol. I’ve got it installed side-by-side with the regular Play Store.

      • tanknspank

This is probably the best solution until the day they do add it back:

        My Purchases: http://bit.ly/11l4NPN

If I remember correctly, it doesn’t require root, just requests permission to log in to the play store.

        • http://twitter.com/apa1102 Apa Chen

          Thanks :)

        • TheOiulkj

Sweet, thanks for point that out. Much better than loading two play stores.

    • michael arazan

If they can have installed, and past downloads window, why not a third window for purchased?

  • Malcolm James II

I can’t believe its been so long since the Play Store has been updated. This new look is awesome, hopefully we get it before G I/O

    • http://scribblepeople.net Mike

it was a little over a year ago

  • Derek Traini

I am hoping that this is just the beginning for UI updates for Android! :D:D

    • http://scribblepeople.net Mike

i would love to see music updated

  • http://twitter.com/kirilv Kiril

It looks like a mix between the old version of Market and the Windows 8 store. I don’t know how I feel about that.

    • EC8CH

even when the old version came out some said it was a kang of Windows 8. I’d say some elements look similar but it definitively has it’s own distinctive style. The newer version differentiates even further with the obvious Google Now inspiration.

  • Jarren

Really liking the new design language. Unfortunately, this makes the wait for google I/O even longer!

  • JetBlue

Definitely looks good can’t wait for when this comes out hopefully the Music player will be changed too.

  • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

show us what it looks like on a Nexus 7

  • Daniel

I just hope it can handle “update all” when the screen turns off…

  • eazyean1

    i like what i see !

  • http://twitter.com/chaoslimits chaoslimits

Hope we can finally batch install apps.

  • SeanPlunk

Where can I get a copy?

  • Greg Morgan

With Keep and now this, I think we’re seeing Google updating all the UI’s on the Android Gapps.

  • http://twitter.com/Tutunkari Ku

This thing is hideous. No thank you.

  • squrel23

    I love it.

    • http://scribblepeople.net Mike

      that is amazing

  • http://www.pcprocare.com/ Barry Taylor

    I wish they’d change the name.. Worst… Name… Ever…

    • http://www.pcprocare.com/ Barry Taylor

      *again.

      The old name was better.

      • http://scribblepeople.net Mike

from google play, i like google play

    • Taylor Wickens

They should name it “Google Market”. “Google Play” or “Play Store” is a stupid name. As is “Google Keep” and “Google Babble”. Who the hell is coming up with these names from Google lately.

      • Chris

They hired some middle easterns from a tech support compney

        • thommcg

          Ironic spelling error…

          • Chris

Glad to know people still think it’s cute to play the spelling error game

          • thommcg

It’s to be expected when you attribute products naming decisions to “some middle easterns”.

  • http://scribblepeople.net Mike

wow this looks great, i would love a leak of this

  • http://www.facebook.com/justin.signa Justin Signa

    I like it!

  • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

Oh, Kellen: can you get this on a tablet?

  • EC8CH

Now how about updating the music player to the Holo theme.

    • Tyler

And Google Maps particularly the Navigator.

      • kubukoz

        Maps are Holo.

        • mikeym0p

The navigation interface is 50% holo

          • http://www.ashevilletechnologyservices.com Dan Brown

            ho

          • picaso86

            ^ LOL

        • Taylor Wickens

The iPhone Google Maps looks more Holo than the Google App. That’s a problem

          • nsnsmj

No. And it’s not a problem unless you are a fanboy. The only part of Android Maps I can think of, that isn’t holo, is Navigation. When holo was introduced, it looked nothing like Google Now or Gmail and Maps on iOS. The current Maps on Android is already holo. Google Now and those few Google iOS apps are an evolution of holo.

Know what you’re talking about before you spout out some nonsense. Both are holo. Both are Google’s design language.

          • Steve Schneider

            But an iphone then.

        • Tyler

Navigator still look like it did from Android 2.0-2.3 the only difference is they moved the stuff from the menu button to a new menu button, it needs an overhall in my opinion.

      • mgamerz

and just google voice… for anything

        • Trevor

          Yes, please!

        • http://develosigner.me/ Matt Digilio

I have a feeling we will see the Holo theme with the new unified messaging service that is rumored to be shown at Google I/O

          • olavnennig9kf

my best friend’s sister makes $87/hr on the laptop. She has been laid off for 9 months but last month her pay was $17353 just working on the laptop for a few hours. Read more on  Ask25.com

          • Chris

and in other news the sky is blue and the grass is green

          • http://www.pcprocare.com/ Barry Taylor

Under the three feet of snow you mean?

          • http://www.facebook.com/archercc Ryan Stewart

God I hope so, the messaging in Google Voice is horrible. That whole service could use an overhaul.

          • picaso86

and please add MMS support, so I can stick it to Verizon.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303904674 Michael Harrison

            And short code.

          • http://profiles.google.com/fordreynaldo Reynaldo Ford

MMS started working for me last friday, I was pretty excited

          • http://www.facebook.com/archercc Ryan Stewart

Still nothing on my end. The only way it works is if you forward messages to gmail.

      • Chris

You have to be carefull when doing that. Navigation is primary used for in car while driving. Holo would need to fit in with that. I’d rather them stick with the current look. Looks more close to actual GPS units.

        • Alan Paone

Everyone knows a nice, consistent UI would be unusable on the road /s

          • Chris

when I’m driving, I’m worried about the road and getting navigation down to few taps/voice actions and not about the apps interface.

          • Alan Paone

Of course, that’s obviously why Nav’s UI isn’t a priority, but that doesn’t mean it has to be ugly, it just doesn’t have to be pretty.

      • Michael

Normal Google Maps looks okay, but Navigation… yeah, that needs a serious overhaul.

    • kubukoz

      >Google Play Music

      • Chris

They really should just name it “google music”

        • zurginator

Or “Play Music” (is that a pun?) since that fits in with their current naming scheme.

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

I think that’ll happen when they launch their music streaming service. If that’s even a real thing.

    • nsnsmj

You mean Google Play Music or the AOSP music player? Play Music is already holo.

      • Israel Lai

At least it’s a fake Holo.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000832131603 Cooper Hansen

The music app is practically the most Holo app on my whole phone!!! What are you talking about?

  • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

This will be a big thing at I/O and for Key Lime Pie. Hope the web Play Store is redesigned too.

  • Austin Warren

    Yeehaw! Can’t wait for I/O!

  • http://twitter.com/BiggiePhat JG

    umm..where can i get this?

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Can’t share, sorry. Plus it’s all sorts of broken.

      • http://twitter.com/BiggiePhat JG

lol figured. but I did get a Kellex reply!

        • Tyler

          You should feel honored. :)

      • http://www.androidheadlines.com/ Alexander Maxham

        :(

      • mgamerz

Where did you get it? Mock up? Leak? Just wondering if you made it up or not, you don’t even mention where you got those pictures.

        • http://twitter.com/fr8cture Eric

          did you watch the video?

          • mgamerz

            At work, can’t :/

      • http://scribblepeople.net Mike

yes where did you get it?

      • http://kennydude.me/ Joe Simpson

You should tear it down like Android Police ;)

    • Alan Paone

It’ll be on xda in a matter of hours, if its not already there now
