motorola ghost

Last week, a never-before-seen Motorola device surfaced that caught most of us by surprise. The device, sort of deemed “mid-range” is actually far from being mid-range. In fact, the more you look at the specs, the more you can see that it’s as good as the Nexus 4, just not necessarily where the Galaxy S4 or HTC One sit because it lacks the newest processor available and a 1080p screen. But that device with model number XT912A could be our first preview at a new Google-powered Motorola. Gone was the kevlar backing and RAZR styling – in was a more rounded Nexus design. If this is Motorola’s next, though, will it be good enough to compete with Samsung and HTC’s newest? Or does Motorola have something else in the works. It appears as if they do.

“Ghost”

The Motorola “Ghost” is, as far as we know, the codename for the device we saw pictured last week as model number XT912A. A GLBenchmark for the device already exists with AT&T branding, so we know that it’s at least headed there. We’ve also heard from enough sources to expect this device to potentially arrive on all four major U.S. carriers. This is not the X Phone, but with somewhat older insides (processor and display), there is a chance that this phone drops in at a ridiculously reasonable price. We’re not sure if it’s going to the Play store or not, but it may stil be worth a look.

According to the benchmark, the “Ghost” is running a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro (MSM8960) clocked at 1.7GHz with a 720p HD display. It will have on-screen navigation buttons. The most recent benchmark showed it running Android 4.2.1, but Motorola now seems fully committed to having the newest version of Android on its phones and should deliver 4.2.2.

“Yeti”

The “Yeti” is yet another codename floating around as a potential future Motorola device. The only signs we’ve seen of this device, also include AT&T branding, so it could be another along with the “Ghost” that AT&T will get a shot at. All we have so far is the name mentioned with it running at least Android 4.2.

“Sasquatch”

The Motorola “Sasquatch” is the last codename that we are starting to spot, most recently at 0xbenchmark on March 13. We don’t have specs, but we do have it running Android 4.2.2 along with another mention of AT&T. As with the “Yeti,” we don’t have specs, just a mention that it’s a new Motorola device in the pipeline.

So without much to go on for the Yeti and Sasquatch, we’re simply sharing this to get both phones on your radar. Also, with both only showing as being attached to AT&T, we can’t help but wonder if these will follow in the footsteps of the Ghost, which is being tested on AT&T, but is largely thought to arrive on all carriers.

Be on the lookout.
