Samsung Officially Announces the Galaxy S4

GALAXY S4 Product Image (1)

Finally. No more leaks. No more rumors. No more questions. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is official. After months of anticipation, the “next big thing” has been announced at a live press event in New York City. In years past, Samsung waited until the early summer or late spring to push out their newest Galaxy, but in 2013, March was the right time.

The Galaxy S4 has a laundry list of specs and features packed into the device to separate it from its predecessor.

Specs:

  • Processor: 1.9GHz Quad-core processor or 1.6GHz Octa-core processor
  • Memory: 2GB of RAM and 16/ 32/ 64 GB User memory expandable through SDcard slot
  • Display: 5″ full-HD Super AMOLED (1920 x 1080) display, 441 ppi
  • Connections: Hexaband LTE, HSPA+, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, IR controller
  • Battery: 2,600mAh
  • Android 4.2.2

A 13MP camera on the back is complimented with a 2MP shooter on the front and both utilize Samsung’s Dual Camera technology that allows you to take photos and videos with both cameras at the same time. Samsung also threw in other camera software tweaks like the ability to capture sound to go with your photos and the ability to take a series of photos and edit out photobombers in the background. Story Album makes automatic albums of your photos when you travel and gathers them for you, even letting you order a physical copy through Samsung’s partnership with Blurb.

TouchWiz looks more or less the same with a few tweaks here and there to look a bit more simplified. The additions of Smart Pause and and Smart Scroll were not lies either. Smart Pause allows the phone to pause a video when you look away from the screen and Smart Scroll does what it says and scrolls with your eye movements. Air View and Air Gesture we’ve also heard of before, allowing you to scroll and do gestures on the S4 just by hovering your finger over the screen.

No official launch date was announced at the event, but Samsung says that we should expect to get our hands on it sometime within Q2 of this year.

Well I’m done. Never again will I buy a Samsung phone. To HTC I go.

  • Gannicus

I’ll buy the Galaxy S5 in 2014 when my Verizon contract has ended.

  • Van Hicks, Jr

Presentation was horrid, but some of the new features were pretty cool. I like the dual video camera. Can’t wait to get it in a custom rom for my note.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.gonzalez.33886 Jonathan Gonzalez

Now time to start hype-beasting the X-phone

  • Dee Beezy

Will these features be coming to the Note 2? Will that little kid get braces??? I NEED TO KNOW NOW!!!!

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

      GIVE ME DUAL CAMERAS!!!!!!

      - happy note 2 owner.

      • Mchl496

They never will come to the old phone. Newer hardware and lazy programming prevents it.

        • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

Not lazy programming per-se, but ithey are smart enough to know that adding next-gen fetures to current-gen devices immediately reduces their sales due to people not upgrading. However, they will definitely be on the Note 3, and maybe on the Note 2 in its 4.2.2 update (assuming it has one, of course)

  • http://www.facebook.com/CalebShwarez Caleb Loop

Guys, dont be stupid, THE NEW ONE HAS A DIFFERENT PATTERN IN THE PLASTIC. /s

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

Same design. Fine. Samsung continues to impress me with new features and software changes. Dual cameras and the notification bar change are nice.

Solid hardware too! Nice pictures, good battery, and hopefully a nice screen.

  • Verizon

This is so painful to watch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/CalebShwarez Caleb Loop

      We meet at last, Verizon.

    • LionStone

      Yes it was, very.

    • nightscout13

      Qualcomm style!

  • Chris

“how will people know i upgraded if it looks the same?” – Samsung
    -______________________________________-

    • Kram Sacul

That one really hurts. You’d think they would pay attention to their own commercials.

      • zurginator

Well to be fair, the 4s is a lot, LOT closer to the 4 than the S4 is to the S3. There are some pretty significant tweaks, it’s just not a total redesign (nor should it be, really).

    • Mchl496

      Because you will brag.

    • Bionic

      bigger screen

  • Futbolrunner

    S-this, S-that.. a bit overplayed for a GS3″S”

  • Jroc869, Nexus-Life

Google/Motorola better step their game up is all I have to say.

  • Guest

Guys, you are all stupid. THE NEW ONE HAS A DIFFERENT PATTERN IN THE PLASTIC.

    • http://www.facebook.com/CalebShwarez Caleb Loop

:| Wish i hadnt had gone back and deleted that comment to add the picture now.

  • David Escalera

    Nexus 4 or X-Phone here I come

  • Vitruvian_Kid

Now we know how the isheep feel when they have an “s” year iphone release.

    • adbFreedom

I have no intention of buying this device, but all of the negativity is surprising. This is nothing like the 4s was to the 4. They made the phone with a bigger display, higher resolution, better camera, faster processer, and software enhancements from the last. This would be more like what the 5 was to the 4s. If they ditched the home button, this would have been my next device. Unfortunately, that is what people identify with the galaxy series now and I don’t see it ever going away.

      • lye

It feels like they sat around brainstorming “interesting feature ideas” while smoking bowls instead of paying attention to what would have actually made phones better.

    • http://twitter.com/hexagram86 David

this is kind of funny coming from a company that spent millions on ads trashing other phones for all looking the same.

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

      Who loses the remote?
      *raises hand*

      • Tyler

just means you’ll lose your phone in the couch more :)

  • Futbolrunner

Vivian needs to shut up! That voice is just as annoying as The Nanny on tv.

  • Ron_Swanson

    Meh.

  • Diablo81588

Can the presentation be any more corny?

  • Killer4247

So many people asked me which phone is best, I said wait a month for the S4. Tomorrow, I will be recommending the HTC ONE/ Droid DNA to multiple people.

  • NyReynolds

Looks likea bigger S3. bet verizons version ‘s has a locked bootloader like the s3 too.

  • Inquizitor

    As ugly as ever.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tylerjehills Tyler James Edward Hills

Haven’t heard anything in the presentation about the processor. Exynos Octa or Snapdragon 600?

    • andrew galvin

600 for us octa for international “1.9GHz quad-core processor / 1.6GHz octa-core processor (will differ depending on market)”

  • Yancey

People sure love to complain about things even though this phone is better than any phone anyone here has

    • Futbolrunner

I’m sure a lot of these new features can be ported on to a new ROM for a GS3 or Note 2. It’s not worth upgrading to this.

  • Killer4247

    Such a cheesy presentation

  • s23

On to the X phone, On to the next one, On the HTC One

    • 4n1m4L

Or glass. I’d settle with glass.

  • nightscout13

This phone has disappointed extremely. I thought we were gonna be WOWed

    • C-Law

What more did you want? Everything improved from the last phone

      • nightscout13

not by much. for day-to-day use, there will be minimal seen changes. All that gimmicky software, no one will use it.

  • Killer4247

This presentation is retarded. We did not tune in to watch another episode of SNL or Modern Family, I want to actually see the darn thing.

  • nightscout13

Those actors are so cheesy……Qualcomm style!

  • andrew galvin

    HTC One > Galaxy s4

    • angermeans

      Yes I very much agree

    • C-Law

gotta disagree. I can’t see any reason to pick the HTC over this

    • C-Law

larger, removable battery. More storage options. sd card slot. More sensors. Bigger display. Better camera. Some cool camera/video features that might be useful. I still can’t see any reason to pick the One over this

      • http://twitter.com/Rkahla Rob Kahla

Aluminum body that is prettier (sorry, it is…regardless of durability to scratches… looks better)… but yeah..that’s it….. it loses in every other state…

      • Bionic

i hate to admit it, but i agree.

      • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

I would hesitate on the “better camera”, as while we now know that the UltraPixel is more gimmick than quality, there’s absolutely nothing that says this new 13 MP sensor is any better than the 4 MP sensor on the HTC.
Also, some people (myself included) simply do not want a device with a 5″ screen. I have a bad feeling I won’t have much choice over the next year, but I can hope that there are other 4.7″-ish flagships.
However, the rest of your points are indisputable. As much as I dislike TouchWiz because it looks terrible with Holo-themed software, at least it has some genuinely useful features, while the software on the HTC One was pretty much just bad.

      • Tech Pro

S4 has many good things but larger is not one of them, otherwise Note 8 will 200% better than S4. Removable battery is a bad thing because build quality and design is bad. External battery pack is much better than removable battery.

Having a SD card slot is really better. The jury is still out for rest of your claim. Earpiece and home button design is still ugly. It just does not go with the single piece glass at the front.

    • billy routh

Htc will never catch up with samsung. Sense sucks

      • andrew galvin

        have you used touchwiz?

    • Tim hyppolite

Lol HTC will never be on samsungs level

    • Bionicman

umm did you not see the presentationand how the S4′s features clobber what HTC is bringing to the fight?

      • andrew galvin

you mean the gimmicky crap that i will never use integrated into their terrible UI? yup no interest.

        • Bionicman

every new phone is going to have features that for some appear gimmicky. hell HTC have some too with their HTC Zoe and Boom Sound. i think you should go with whats best for you. but personally i think most people will be more interested in what Samsung is offering with the S4 as a package (excluding hardware design).

“And not a single f**k was given.” -Pewdiepie

  • nightscout13

Flashback to CES, Qualcomm Keynote. See the resemblance?

  • sac

not Upgrating to the S4. Lets just wait for Motorola X phone

  • Eric

This unveiling is so cheesy! Coupled with what we’ve already seen in leaks, I have to say I may have to skip the S4…sad since I’ve had every prior Galaxy S device.

  • Dave Hong

This presentation is horrible. A little too over the top.

    • http://twitter.com/jamdev12 jamdev12

You’ve never gone to a Broadway Show I take it? I know it was a little over the top, but when you have actors acting well things can get a little cheesy.

    • http://twitter.com/ToysSamurai Toys Samurai

This is exactly why they succeed, man. Just look at how HTC tried to explain Zoe — sure, we can understand it, but the average Joe? Good luck. I bet the reaction will mostly be “Why do I need it?” Comparing to how Samsung presents the S4. It really doesn’t matter how the features actually work, because they only show the outcomes of the features, not the features themselves. That immediately answers the “Why do I need it” question.

    • matt

That presentation made the S4 seem cheaper than it already looks.

  • http://twitter.com/MarkARoan Mark Roan

441 ppi. Shut up and take my money!

  • skinja99

The cross hatch pattern on the plastic body looks TERRIBLE.

    • Jon

It might even look worse than the SGS3.

  • jmasterj

Does the screen look like it has terrible color balance or is that just the background? Or me?

  • jsingh07

It looks “corny” like a cheap mid range device. I feel like they didn’t even bother trying. At least when Apple releases the same design its a damn good design not gonna lie. Damn I love my s3 but im just going with HTC on this one.

    • 4n1m4L

It lowers cost per device. Either the price for consumers is lower which attracts more consumers, or increases profts. Business strategy

      • bombhills

But what’s in it for me?

        • 4n1m4L

          Nothing

      • jsingh07

They don’t lower the prices by much so they are just maxing out their profit…how come everyone starts bitching when Apple does it? Its ok for Samsung to do it give out plastic while everyone else gets premium materials (first world problems). I was a huge android fanboy but lately i started looking at things from the outside and damn are we hypocrites.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Same look as the S3, same crappy Touchwiz.

    • rodney11ride

AND same crappy home button…. oh but you can buy a fancy cover for that button… HAHAHAHA

      • Tim hyppolite

Are you guys really complaining about a home button . you guys are so lame lol

    • billy routh

Touchwiz is the best android skin out there and the sells numbers prove it. Stock android is plain and boring and cant do half of what touchwiz can.

  • http://www.facebook.com/preeth.manu Preeth Manu

its less curvy…more squared off, and it doesnt have the nature design like the S3 did…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ryan-Lawrence/1296216206 Ryan Lawrence

They lost me at the physical home button.

    • http://twitter.com/hexagram86 David

If you’re going to copy the likeness of another phone and make a ton of money on it why change it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/thejondude Jon DeMarie

i like the home button :) and i tihnk the 3 key onscreen layout is bad! id rather have menu and back with a physical home button over back home ….and??? resent apps?

    • Tyler Cameron

I’m fine with a physical hone button, but they are STILL putting a menu button on it! Menu buttons have been obsolete since 4.0. We want a recent apos key -.-

  • rodney11ride

Sounds like a bunch of GS3 owners commenting with jealousy? lol Too funny.

    • http://twitter.com/hoodieNation hoodieNation

More like a bunch of GS3 owners commenting with apathy

  • http://twitter.com/rsbousquet Rbq

    Well this is underwhelming

    • New_Guy

That’s what everyone said about the S3. Aaaand 9million pre-orders and 100 million devices later…..

      • http://twitter.com/papibone5 Alphonso Reeves

No where near a 100 million sorry

        • New_Guy

…and no other OEM is anywhere close to Samsung…the point???

  • xFrozenMANGO

    Same design as the GS3..

    • Wongjo

      No, gs3 look better

  • http://twitter.com/hoodieNation hoodieNation

My S3 still feels new. I’ve got no motivation to upgrade to the 4.

  • douchebagger

    This announcement sucks

  • paul_cus

People expected it to look different?

  • douchbagger

Not much different than the S3

    • EvanTheGamer

Instead of ‘douchbagger’, change it to ‘trollbagger’…it’s more fitting.

      • Ibrick

        Is Austin making an appearance?

  • xFrozenMANGO

    Basically the same design -_-

    • New_Guy

Yep the same old, underappreciated, multibillion dollar design… the nerve…

  • j__h

Looks the same as the last one.

  • http://twitter.com/CurrentWeb CurrentWeb

    …”Life Companion?”
    Gag me with a spoon.

    • Mchl496

Its legal in most states except California ;)
