LG Trolls Samsung With Well-Placed Optimus G Billboards in Times Square

LG Optimus Times Square Troll

Someone on LG’s marketing street team is a genius. This morning, new billboards went up in Times Square, directly over Samsung’s “The Next Galaxy” ad that reads, “LG Optimus is here 4 you now!”

We know that Samsung spent $400+ million dollars on marketing Galaxy last year alone, but it’s starting to look like they should have spent just a tad bit more. Well played, LG.

You mad, Sammy?

  • fourprime

id hardly call that genius or clever. more cliche than anything and its not even a well designed poster. the typography is terrible

  • I think you meant to say at the end “Problem, Sammy?” {{^_^}}

  • bkosh84

    haha, that’s genius.

  • Lol well played and well placed LG

  • bananatroll

appears to be a copycat attempting to copy the king of the copy cats

  • One “4” Sign . . . Ha ha ha!

    Two “4” signs . . . Ha ha ha!

    Three “4′ signs . . . Ha ha ha!

    Four “4” signs . . . Ha ha ha!

Four signs with the number four . . . Ha ha ha!

(I hear the Count now that i typed this)

  • YOLO

  • yummy

    I’d be firing people right
    about now

  • That is pretty clever and I give them props just for the fun in it, but as everyone else is saying, it’s not going to do much for LG other than make a few people chuckle.

  • dannyWHITE

Looks like in the Engadget article they claim that LG had that spot for their advertising for over 20 years and Samsung just took the spot below them a year ago…so if u ask me Sammy is trolling

  • dannyWHITE

People will think there is a LG Optimus Galaxy launching lol

  • mgamerz

LG is ready 4 the raping the S4 will give the Optimus G

  • TomStieger

I don’t know what phone I want, but it has that 4 in it somewhere? Oh the iPhone 4S has siri …. I’ll take it! πŸ˜‰

  • JakeS41

I really couldn’t care less about the GS4. It looks like a rehash of the GS3 and I’ve never been a fan of TouchWhiz or the cheap plastic feel. For me, the HTC One is where its at. 5″ is too large for a phone IMO – in phablet territory it’s fine – but not for a phone. HTC definitely earned my money this round.

  • Jroc869, Nexus-Life

Apple should take notice. You dont have to take everything into a court of law, sometimes the court of public opinion is a far more powerful thing. My opinion of LG just went up even more. Id much rather this smartphone war than the one that Apple chooses to fight.

  • Reginald Spence II

“it’s starting to look like they should have spent just a tad bit more. Well played, LG.

    You mad, Sammy?”

  • NicholasMicallef

That’s either a very good or a very bad idea. The fact that it’s so similar (with the 4 in the middle and everything) might mean the LG ad get’s easily overlooked

    • Famouz Starz

most consumers will not even notice the LG all they will see is the 4…. they are just hyping up the S4 even more.

  • hackthis02

LG should have made it for the Nexus 4

  • joejoe5709

Should have incorporated Nexus4 in there somewhere. πŸ™‚

  • Dave

it’s funny, because that’s how many Optimus phones are sold daily worldwide.

  • kuboo99

    Dang…That is pretty good.

  • zurginator

A big thing I noticed thanks to this add: How many god damn fonts to companies need to use in a single device’s name?
Samsung Galaxy S IV. Each word is a different font.
LG Optimus G Pro. Each word is a different font.

4 fonts for a logo is WAY too many.

    • Austin Warren

It got your attention right? Boom

      • zurginator

No, it got me pissed off. I will never buy a device with that many fonts on it. Minimalism is the way to go in the modern world. Get people their information, and keep the actual item out of the way.

        • Austin Warren

Good thing you aren’t in marketing.

          • zurginator

            1) Marketing and Design are different fields.
            2) Apple marketing works just fine with minimalism.

          • Austin Warren

because their fans will buy anything with an apple

          • zurginator

Yes, and they built that fan base through well-done marketing.

        • PhoenixPath

“I will never buy a device with that many fonts on it. ”

          Ahhh…a truly discerning buyer.

“It does not matter one whit, Sir, if it works or not: You have too many type-settings.”

          • zurginator

As a designer, I do actually care about what my various items of use look like. Sure, I’m not going to buy some POS because it looks nice, but form does play a great deal into my final purchase.

And because I know it’s coming: No, I don’t own any Apple products. I have a N4 with a custom designed back on the way (no logos), and a Windows (until PS is Linux friendly (Don’t say GIMP)) desktop, which I did pay quite a pretty penny to get a nice chassis for.

          • PhoenixPath

Cool. Glad you’re not as fanatic as that original post made you out to be. πŸ˜›

Oh, and just because I’m a complete jackass: That windows computer you have? It’s got *tons* of fonts on it. Just check the fonts folder in C:Windows, man…littered with ’em.

            *wicked grin*

(This should be a capital crime….)

          • zurginator

Technically the fonts are IN it, not on it. πŸ˜›

Hell, even my keyboard has no letters. Haha.

          • PhoenixPath

“even my keyboard has no letters.”

That would make me want to kill things. I’ll stick with letters on my keyboard. Ya know, for safety reasons….

          • MonkeyWork

I do actually TRY not to buy from companies with huge advertising budgets, and no sense of style because they make the world uglier. Advertising becomes more intrusive every day.

Having said that, also look up hyperbole.

  • Butters619

Honestly it comes down to which you read first. Once you read one you’ll probably assume the other is the same.

  • ImmaDroid

Wow.. This bashing game is getting entertaining. The billboard is just like sammys, lol funny, people probably will just think its samsungs

    • tyguy829

or that samsung’s is lg’s…considering that samsung doesn’t have a logo anywhere on its boards, while LG does.

  • Justin Barrett

That’s about as effective as Schiller’s rips on Android.

  • shooter50

Everyone hates the big dog. LG should try making a better product. When their big deal phone is a glass back 3G Nexus 4, I can understand why they need to try gimmicks to get attention. This should work about as well as microsoft’s “scroogled” campaign.

    • LG’s big deal phone is the Optimus G…not the Nexus 4……..sure the nexus 4 has probably outsold the Optimus G, but the Nexus is Google’s baby….LG just built it for them.
also, nothing wrong with the optimus G. its a sweet phone. i would take one in a heartbeat. but not being on all carriers is a killer.

  • Good move by LG, and now LG needs to get their top of the line phones on every carrier

  • Ken Bosse

lol I like it. Only thing better would be if there was an apple logo somewhere below Samsung’s ad

    • john

because of how much sammy copies apple?

      • Austin Warren

        don’t even start that.

      • JoshGroff

My Note 2 feels more like an iPhone every day. πŸ˜‰

      • Ken Bosse

I guess you could say that, but i was more going in the direction of, I hate Apple.

  • Austin Warren

Too bad it won’t help their sells. Still funny though.

  • Sat Sharma

clever, but it will just draw more attention to the s4 event.

    • Butters619

They really shouldn’t have put the “4” on the board.

      • NexusPhan69

It almost makes it look like both ads are for for LG. I don’t see Samsung anywhere. Just LG. I think the 4 is brilliant.

        • Butters619

It’s really hard to get an idea of the Ad without being there. Clearly the LG Ad is brighter so from the viewpoint of the photo you are more drawn to it, but does the same hold true for the street view?

I do agree though the LG logo is really the only thing that stands out between the two ads, and Samsung really should have included a logo.

However, like Sat said, the 4 draws even more attention to the S4 event, especially considering Samsung has already plastered Times Square with “4” stuff including a “4” stage.

          • NexusPhan69

            I was there πŸ™‚

          • Butters619

Oh nice! But you are a DL reader :p. You may be a bit more informed than the average New Yorker haha.

          • NexusPhan69

I never notice the ads. Ever. I hate times square and usually avoid it. I was looking around for once because of the impending announcement for clues! So you’re exactly right. The average New Yorker will never know.

          • Butters619

Are there a lot of “4” ads out? Sites keep making it seem like Samsung is going all out.

          • NexusPhan69

They were setting up some massive stage or something blocking a huge area but in terms of ads, not that much really. There are a ton of TV screens that can easily be changed to GS4 once the event is about to start.

          • NexusPhan69

It looked very fancy. Big white tents and white chairs a bunch of banners (maybe hiding something). They’re going all out with this.

          • Butters619

Thanks for the first person POV! haha.

          • NexusPhan69

No probs. It was a nice day for a lunch break walk.

          • Casual New Yorker goes into store, “I’m looking to purchase the next Samsung galaxy LG Optimus G 4.”

          • Butters619

Hahaha! That is exactly how I was picturing it in my head. And I feel any employee in the store is going to be beyond confused at first and then recommend waiting for the SGS4 rather than picking up the Optimus.

          • NicholasMicallef

I bet Samsung has invested in more billboards in the area not just that one so there’s a good chance most people will simply overlook the fact that one of them is actually from LG.

          • Butters619

That’s exactly where I was going with it when I said that LG shouldn’t have included the “4”. With the “4” on it, it just matches all of the other Samsung ads in the area so people won’t look twice at it.

      • michael arazan

        I can’t find the LG 4 anywhere = P

Unless they meant the Nexus 4 which took 7 months to get in stock

  • Tony Byatt

Samsung will probably have the last laugh…where it counts…$$$

    • New_Guy

Haha, exactly. The Optimus G is “Here 4 now” but after the unpacked event, it will be “Gone 2 morrow.”

      • MikeCiggy

I gave you a thumbs up, but this was corny as hell haha

        • New_Guy

Ha! And so was LG’s ad =)…

      • LOL’d so hard

    • michael arazan

I’ll take the Samsung over LG any day, at least samsung is trying to update phones faster now.

That biilboard was probably Half of LG’s budget for the year in Advertising too

  • James_Kernicky

And they still won’t sell near as many phones as samsung…

  • EatUrCrap

    Hahahaha, trolololol

  • Shaunwin

    Ha ha ha ha ROFL

  • John Ippolito

Is that the number of LG Optimus that will be sold today? 4? Love the effort, but that’s like a average NBA player taking shots a LeBron. Pointless.

    • Austin Warren

    • WAldenIV

Phonetically your post reads “a la Bron” which is funny to me.

  • the SHREK Optimus G. That’s some nice trolling there LG.

  • *slow clap* Well played, LG, well played.

  • mike

Im not usually a big fan of these types of antics, but give credit where its due. Nice job LG

  • Uriah Bullard

HTC needs whoever is behind the marketing at LG, then they could possibly be contenders…..Take notes HTC

  • Paradisimo

I’m surprised that the sales people that lease that space would allow LG to place that ad right above the Samsung ad. Given that Samsung spent $400M on marketing last year I think I would maybe be a little more careful not to piss them off since LG probably spent 1/10 of that amount.

    • Doubt it, if Samsung doesn’t buy the spot next time someone else will.

      • JoshGroff

    • All the owner/operators of the ad space are likely to care about is that someone wants to buy their space. Being in Times Square, what do they care if two ad companies want to duke it out? Its just more money in their pocket, since you know they make a profit everytime they change the message even if its the same company.

      • Paradisimo

The difference being that Samsung spends much more marketing money than LG and will likely purchase far more future ads than LG will. As a salesperson I wouldn’t want to compromise an account like that over a one time shot from LG.

        • john

its times square. you think they have trouble selling the space?

          • JoshGroff

            This logic, it’s flawless.

        • Liderc

It’s not like Samsung is going to stop advertising in times square because of it. They’re not idiots.

          • Paradisimo

Right because they haven’t gotten into pissing matches with anyone over petty issues…
