“Hyper Bright Display” Trademarked By Samsung Before Tonight’s Event

galaxy-s4-3

Expect a lot of buzzwords to be tossed around tonight at Samsung’s Unpacked event when they announce the Galaxy S4. The newest one that they recently trademarked for themselves is the term “Hyper Bright Display.” The phrase was trademarked Monday to make sure that Samsung had it locked up before the launch of their new flagship device.

We have expected the display to be at the forefront of tonight’s event for a while now, with rumors since MWC pointing towards a full-1080p, possibly Super AMOLED. Add in the finger hover technology as well as this “Hyper Bright Display” and Samsung is looking to blow us away with the screen on the S4.

We’ll be live blogging the event tonight, so make sure to clear your schedule!

“Works in daylight” now is the other way to look at this enhancement

  • regkilla

Good move Samsung now Apple wont be able to copy you and claim they came up with it first.

  • Patrick

But it would be nice if they still use the words as I registered http://www.hyperbrightdisplay.com today….

  • Patrick

    Denied but still pending

  • JakeS41

They should have trademarked “Hyper Burn-In”. That would have been approved.

    Registration Refused – Descriptive Mark

Registration is refused because the applied-for mark merely describes features of applicant’s goods. Trademark Act Section 2(e)(1), 15 U.S.C. §1052(e)(1); see TMEP §§1209.01(b), 1209.03 et seq.

I like what the Chinese said in the image above — sounds like some commercials for … sexy stockings :-D

  • Nate

That’s cool and all, but the “hover over” feature is a complete gimmick Any videos I’ve seen of it on the Note and this “leak” have it so you hover over a picture to see a thumbnail get bigger. In the time it takes to realize you’re hovering, I’m pretty sure you could have clicked on the image, seen it, then backed out. Cool, yes. Needed? No.

    • jnt

Plus it’s simply not much bigger than the thumbnail…

  • skinja99

The size of the S3 was perfect for what it is. And the size of the NII is perfectly sized for what it is.

But the S4 does not look like a good size.

    • Joe

      lolwut

  • Jim

What’re the chances of Samsung putting in the USB Charge Only and USB Mass Storage options when connection to a PC that Google removed from Android?

    • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

Mass storage is extremely likely. Charge only, probably, but maybe not. MTP is essentially Charge Only mode when an active transfer is not being processed, as the device can still access and modify the internal storage, unlike Mass Storage mode, which remounts the /sdcard and /sdcard-ext partitions to be r/w by the USB only.

      • Alan

Except I don’t want any devices being detected by my OS. Charge Only was useful for that.

  • Makers1071

From the USPTO document: “Registration is refused because the applied-for mark merely describes features of applicant’s goods”

  • bogy25

    I kinda like HyperPixel better

  • DanWazz

Your eyes looking a little pale? Are they too good at “seeing” things? Try the new Hyper Bright Display from Samsung!

  • Androidster_XLS

    very sleek front!!!
what if this is a REVAMPED SIII???

where can I watch a LIVE STREAM of the S4 launch???

Should I go to the event in times square tonight? I hope they have give always and cool stuff. It’s just a 20 minute hop on the subway, but I’ll be there at 5:30 and it doesn’t start till 7.

  • Marshall D

Did you even bother to read the USPTO document? Samsung was DENIED the Hyper Bright Display trademark.

    • PhoenixPath

Registration is refused because the applied-for mark merely describes features of applicant’s goods.

(For those who are unwilling to read the doc)

    • Austin Warren

But apple an trademark a store? Lame

      • Butters619

Please read both patents. There is a reason.

My Lite-Brite had a hyper bright display

These companies need to invest less r&d money in screen brightness and more in direct-light viewing. Just because it’s bright doesn’t mean you can see a thing if you’re out in the sun.

    • Famouz Starz

you and the other 1% that stand out in direct sunlight to use your phone should start a petition

      • Alan

You don’t go out much or ever go near a window?

        • Austin Warren

So do people who live in the mountains get direct sunlight? That’s like asking if a bear sh*ts in the woods.

        • Matt P.

Exactly. The majority of time I use my phone, the sun is in the way and washes out my screen.

        • Famouz Starz

corner office here widows galore, i have no problem viewing my screen, when i go out i dont turn my back to the sun so i have trouble seeing my device, its logical to tilt you device an position your self to view properly.

thats like saying i cant play my old school sit down pacman arcade game in direct sunlight well no sh$t sherlock the sun is beaming right down on it

      • PhoenixPath

        Wow.

        Lots of basement-dwellers posting today?

Maybe you should try going outside more…it’s a big world. Lots of folks spend a good deal of time in direct sunlight.

        • Austin Warren

i think you’re missing the point of “direct sunlight”. Everyone goes outside, but not everyone is in an environment where the sun is beating down on your phone. Theres a big difference.

          • PhoenixPath

Not really. Your shadow accounts for what…30 of 360 degrees?

One should not have to turn sideways and put their hand over their device in order to read the screen. God forbid you’re driving away from the sun and your device is docked facing you…better hope it’s voice nav.

          • Famouz Starz

god forbid you driving in my direction looking at your hyper bright screen.

          • PhoenixPath

Hyper Bright – Images at LIGHT SPEED!

            Oh, wait…

          • http://twitter.com/jcardona1 jcardona

I think you’re missing the point of “being outside”.

    • Austin Warren

Yeah cause everyone is in direct sunlight when using their phone. /s

      • PhoenixPath

Yeah, cuz everyone is a troll living in mom’s basement and obviously never goes outside. /s

        Please…

Anyone who spends a decent amount of time outdoors would like better direct viewing. Glad it’s not an issue for you, but that has no correlation whatsoever to the reality the rest of us must face.

      • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

He’s suggesting that screen brightness (and the accompanying battery drain) may not be the best solution to viewing a screen in bright conditions. Such a feat would be great for outdoor photography, especially as many people are using their phones instead of point & shoot cameras for snapshots now.

      • http://twitter.com/jcardona1 jcardona

I know right? What is wrong with these people that like to be outside and not splattered across a couch most of the day playing video games. They need to get a life. /s

    • Derp

Agreed, just cause the two above me don’t leave their mom’s basements doesn’t mean there aren’t millions of people who live in sunny places like CA where a display that works in direct sunlight is extremely useful.

  • RW-1

At the end of the day, it’s just another unit, and we’ll be looking towards the next one to come out ….

  • Alan

I really hope the final GS4 comes in a solid matte color. That texture look is extremely ugly and yells cheap.

    • EC8CH

I kinda agree. One thing I like about the G-Nex is how the AMOLED screen disappears into black bezel when it displays blacks. That textured bezel would ruin that.

    • Butters619

I hate to say it, but the texture looks better than the hyper gloss of last year

      • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

I kind of agree, but better != good in this case, imo.

  • jnt

Anybody else feel like Samsung is becoming what Apple was 1-2 years ago? Yes I realize that question is somewhat open ended and ambiguous… :)

    • James

      Do you mean successful? ;)

I don’t get it, Sammy uses Android (and even innovates it to be more useful in many cases), features thin devices with bigger (and now higher than retina resolution) screens than Apple, utilizes some creativity in marketing, allows for expandable storage and removable batteries, and now it seems like people just can’t be happy for them or talking about them without negatively associating them with Apple. I just don’t get it.

      • James

edit, and I’m not saying that your question negatively associates them with Apple.. just that many people are starting to do just that.

      • Butters619

While all true, they also have succumb to the hyper-awesome buzzword marketing train. Making up new phrases to describe things to make them seem bigger than they are.

        • S2556

          every company does this though…
          boom sound is an example

          • Butters619

Like I said, it works so I don’t knock them for it. But because it works, it seems every phone company is taking it and running with it.

          • James

Yes, and they should.. because it works. There’s nothing wrong with that so long as they aren’t lying about the specs.

          • jnt

Yeah I was referring more to the hype monster – don’t have any problem with the success! I just get beat down by that, no matter what company it is. And no, not all of them do it when they become this successful. Something about this being a smartphone combined with things like the [non]flash mob (for example) just makes me think of the movie Idiocracy. I’m sure I’m just becoming an old curmudgeon about it all! I do have to say, even though Apple is one of the worst about this, at least Apple’s implementation of their gimmicks normally works really really well. S-Voice, S-whatever, and likely (yes I’m being speculative) all these eye/head control features on Samsung – not exactly a refined experience. Yet they’ll be the key points when the hype monster climaxes tonight.

          • Tim242

Well, that 4 MP ultra pixel camera takes horrible pics.

    • cortesjues

I feel that i will decide today if samsung is becoming th enext apple. I have a feeling the “S4″ is going to end up being more of a “S3s” than a real upgrade, and if this happens then i think they are the next apple. But if they actually innovate then i think they will be just fine

      • S2556

If it is anything like the Rumours then I don’t think it will fit the description of a GS3S.
Apple kept the exact same exterior on the 4 and 4s. they bumped some of the internals up a bit and thats it. The GS4 doesnt take anything from the GS3 except for the general design of the GS3 and they improved on it. I think the apple comparisons are unfair because apple hasn’t upgraded a device as much as this since the iphone 4, Nothing is confirmed yet so we will see this evening, however.

        • cortesjues

well there were some small physical differences between the 4 and 4s (super small) and the only upgrade was siri which was 1 cool new gimmick, and a small spec boost. I haven’t heard any different rumor from samsung’s galaxy line, maybe a slightly better processor and same physical shape? It just doesn’t seem to me like it’s going to be a substancial enough update but i could be completely wrong. Then again the screen could also be super amazing so maybe that is worth it

          • zurginator

Refined design, increased screen res (drastically), bumped camera, CPU, internal storage, bigger battery, etc. What exactly did you want them to do?

          • cortesjues

there wan’t a refined design, haven’t heard anything about a camera, internal storage is same, bigger battery with significatly more powerful cpu and screen so same battery life. I wanted them to either update the build quality, or upgrade the battery life, something innovative not something other have already done

          • zurginator

Different curves, different pattern, different backing, improved feel if that Chinese review holds true, and a 13mp camera.

Plastic is the BEST build you can get on a mobile device if you want something that’s thin, light, or has removable battery. Not to mention shock absorption.

And sure, it’s got a bigger screen and faster CPU to power — but I bet a significant battery life upgrade as well. Just like the S1 -> S2 -> S3, which were all the same as well.

    • Joe

Wow, I don’t think anybody else has mentioned this, said nobody on DroidLife.

      • jnt

sorry… lol, I don’t have time to sit around and read all the comments on each post every day… or every post for that matter :|

  • Thomas

Sounds like a battery killer to me

    • jnt

+1 – 1080 is a lot of pixels to push… I’d be shocked if the battery life on this thing is significantly better than current phones (I can’t remember the rumored battery size)

      • T4rd

I think the current rumor is 2600 mAh battery. If that’s the case, then I don’t think battery life will be an issue whatsoever. That’s larger than the Razr HD (not Maxx) which easily lasts a full day with a decent amount of usage and this phone will have even an more power efficient SoC in it.

        • Dave

Battery is the tank and the chipset is the MPG. While big batteries are nice, chip sets are more important as you stated.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dominick-White/642535026 Dominick White

Should be fine, example DROID dna, j butterfly and the HTC one

        • Tim242

I tried the DNA for a week. The battery life was terrible.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dominick-White/642535026 Dominick White

Same battery life has the s3 and nexus 4

          • LionStone

The dna’s battery is fine, your usage requires more is all. I’m getting 16+ hrs ave. currently….usually 30 min of calls/day…3 hrs screen time on and only using about 10% of the 2020 mAh battery! If I used WiFi I’m sure my ave. would be higher, but it’s all LTE.
It will be interesting to see how the 2600 mAh performs in the S4 w quad core and 1080p…I know how the 2100 mAh performs in the S3 and the screen really eats the battery.

    • Austin Warren

      nope

      • Jon

Why? Does it use the same or less power as previous screens? Do you have power consumption values that no one knows? Battery size doesn’t mean anything in terms of a “battery killer.”

        • Austin Warren

Yes it does? My Note 2 on full brightness gets me 12 hours +. Simple science.

          • Matt P.

Power consumption determines whether a screen is a battery killer. Slapping a bigger battery on a phone doesn’t change the amount of power the screen draws.

It’s like you’re saying a huge truck that gets 10 MPG isn’t a gas guzzler because it has a 100 gallon gas tank.

          • Austin Warren

A bigger battery helps it though. That’s what the octa is for anyways. 4 cores for power and 4 cores for power saving i believe.

    • EvanTheGamer

Nope. Samsung has obviously already thought of that, which is why there will be a better battery in tow to make sure that even with the SGS4’s “Hyper Bright Display”, its battery won’t die super quick.

  • James_Kernicky

Hyper Bright (But put on dim to save your battery) Display

    • Austin Warren

With a big battery that won’t matter.

      • James_Kernicky

Brighter will just use the bigger battery faster

        • Austin Warren

Still get you all day use.

          • Diablo81588

            You and your assumptions.

      • j

every screen can get much too bright anyway. Only necessary for direct sunlight. Seriously, who thinks the S3 screen, or GNex screen, etc doesn’t get bright enough?

        • brkshr

GNex screen was horrible! S3 & N4 are just fine. I owned all 3. I didn’t know how bad the GNex was until I did side by side comparisons.

          • http://twitter.com/jayracer7474 jay middleton

            u never had a bionic

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Besnik-Novaj/100003031304381 Besnik Novaj

Im coming from the Bionic to the GNex and I’m in love hahahaa. maybe S4 my next phone

          • brkshr

Actually I did for about 2 months. I hated that phone!

          • j

Yea, it’s grainy, has vertical pixel lines and discoloration, overall color accuracy and temp issues.. but it gets plenty bright :P

          • brkshr

Not bright enough for me. I drive with the top off my Jeep 8 months out of the year. It was very hard for me to see anything during the day while I’m driving. Other than that & some of the issues you mentioned, it was plenty bright everywhere else. I still have love for my GNex. One of my favorite phones.

    • Butters619

With auto brightness set to “barely see” mode :p

    • michael arazan

And will the Hyper Bright display make the Kessel run in under 6 parsecs

  • gokusimpson

Isn’t this the screen that was rumored to use hexagon-shaped pixels or something like that?

  • palomosan

As long as it’s not Pen-tile, I know a lot of people will be happy.

    • T4rd

Though I would prefer it not to be, I don’t think it matters much at ~440 PPI. If it has the same semi-RGB pixel arrangement as the Note 2 though, then it will definitely be awesome.

    • Brian P

Even Pen-tile, at 1080p you won’t see any of the cursed effects of pentile technology. Samsung has preety much perfected the Pentile tech with the note 2

      • palomosan

Pentile is pentile to me, have you seen HTC’s 1080p screen, it’s just gorgeous and they don’t use pentile.

      • jnt

        I thought the Note 2 wasn’t pentile?

        • T4rd

It’s not Pentile, but it’s not full RGB either. The Blue pixel is longer and is shared by two other GB pixels. It is a significant improvement over the RGBG Pentile arrangement on previous SAMOLED displays though and there’s not much distinction at all between that in a normal RGB pixel arrangement.

        • JoshGroff
  • James

I wonder how this screen will stack up against the DNA or the M7/One?

    • Dave

I think we are quickly approaching where the naked or untrained eye isn’t going to differentiate.

      • gokusimpson

True. The only things someone may see is viewing angles or color difference. And only if they compare side by side. Just too good of screens these days.

        • Dave

With my GN2 “only” being 720p, I’ve never said to myself, “wow this is inadequate, I should have waited for a 1080 display ” Heck, even my kids use my old Droid X and I realize it’s obviously not up to today’s standards, but there’s no way it couldn’t get the job done daily.

          • cortesjues

I agree with you that the GN2 screen is adequate (Read: great!), since i have used my DNA for the last couple of months every time I have to use my work’s S3 i can’t help but cringe at how ugly it is. I dont get the same cringe feeling with the GN2 screen though.

  • p8ntballah21

Boom Sound is still way better

  • Austin Warren

Damnit samsung. You aren’t HTC. Don’t use such a dumb name

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dominick-White/642535026 Dominick White

Dear gods, stop already it’s just a phone
