Verizon Galaxy S3 Update to Android 4.1.2 Already Rolling Out

galaxy s3 update

The 150.3MB update for Verizon’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 that was approved yesterday is already rolling out. The update jumps the phone up to build VRBMB1 and Android 4.1.2. It should improve Bluetooth, predictive text in the keyboard, email syncing, and allow you to take pictures while on a call.

The full changelog can be found here.

To pull the update, head into Settings>About phone>Software update.

Anybody have a root for this update? I don’t need a custom ROM or anything. Just wanna root this 4.1.2. Thanks.

  • Csteffel

Does Foxfi still work this update ?? This is my main concern as I use it on a daily basis .

  • Kirk Wilson

Unfortunately, I accepted the 4.1.2 update yesterday. now my phone reboots every couple of hours or so. Up to now the GS3 has been the best phone I have ever owned. As of yesterday, I can’t make a phone call without it triggering a reboot. I will be calling Verizon later today and I am hoping they will be able to help me roll the update back to the last stable build.

  • nicole

This keyboard update is terrible. In fact, both of the updates have made the keyboard go fromgreat to caveman. The autocorrect is awful. If I wanted a phone to remember every typo I made, I would go back to having a flip phone. Verizon has killed the S3.

    • Megan

Agreed. I love this phone but the new keyboard updates are HORRID. Frequently have an issue where I try choosing a word from the predictive text menu and it deletes everything I’ve just typed (I’m talking a paragraph, not just the word I’m currently on).

  • Coling08

Mike, I have the same problem with my S3 stuck on the “Secure Fail:Kernel” screen. Can you please give me a quick step by step on how you fixed it? It would be very much appreciated!

  • JB Quigley

Did the update and now i get an extened beeping all the time!!!! Pain in the butt. I took my phone to Verizon and they had 0 clue. Come on Google, get the bugs worked out before you send out an update.

  • patd

    I have 4.2.2 on my vzw s3 🙂

  • Meaghan Juba

On the new update my keyboard vibrates and beeps when you hit a key. I went into settings and turned off any option that could be causing it to do that. No matter what I turn on/off the vibrations and sounds keep occurring. Before the update, no problems and no vibrations/sounds. Any ideas?

    • cmumathwhiz

Did you check the keyboard settings? Settings -> Language and input -> the gear icon next to the Samsung keyboard.-> advanced …. then there are Key-tap vibration and sound settings.

  • John Martens

This update broke all my sync features. Corporate email, GAL lookup, all Google services, dropbox and Facebook. None are syncing and I am unable to enable it. Is anyone else having this issue?

  • Ndlelenhle Njoko

    Where have they been?

  • jeff

I don’t use bluetooth, I use Swiftkey, Gmail sync is fine, and I’ve never needed to take a picture while on a call. So basically, this update won’t affect me at all.

  • Greg Carter

Will I lose my root if this updates?

  • tommariner

4.1.2 is not jelly bean. Jelly Bean is 4.2.x (now 2).

    • Diablo81588

Uh wrong? 4.1 is jelly bean..

  • Lavoisier1794

This update broke my phone. I had previously bought a used S3. It wasn’t rooted, but it apparently had clockwork recovery mod on it. Last time I got an update, it pulled up clockwork recovery mod, but I told it to update anyway and it was fine. This time, it won’y even boot up. It just say “System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone and go to the nearest Verizon Wireless Store for help.” Any suggestions on how to fix this. I have almost no knowledge of rooting, ODIN, etc.

    • Lavoisier1794

The weirdest thing happened. Ok, I put in ODIN mode and pressed cancel. Then like 3 minutes later, it just started up all on its own. The update failed of course but the phone is working again. Weird. Was able to turn it off and restart.

I think I may trade this phone back into the same folks who sold it to me. I am clearly not cut out for this.

      • Colin Wolfson

        Wow… that worked. Eff yeah!

      • C-Law

I dunno if would change ur recovery back or not but u could try a reset. . I guess it would depend if ur on a stock rom. Go to settings >back up & reset>Factory data reset. I’m not really sure though if that would restore ur recovery or not. If not, you would need to download Odin and a full factory image and flash. It’s super easy. There are tutorials on xda

  • Mason Lammers

Can someone humor me and tell me if there is a 4.2.2 ROM that allows multi-window on my Verizon GS3? I see ROMs with 4.1.2 but none for 4.2.2. Perhaps there is a way to side load this but even that has eluded me. I will keep digging, but I figure the best resource is DL.

  • Updated to 4.1.2, but GPS won’t lock on 🙁

  • GregSki86

I upgraded….seems like everything is much smoother IMO and swype keyboard is phenomenal (compared to samsung’s sh*tty keyboard)

  • kane

Meanwhile In root land Cynogen and AOKP have new releases… for 4.2.2 plus a new build of GAPPS

  • Anyone with root update yet? Did you use OTA RootKeeper? How did it go? Anything I should note?

    • Cott

Nope, got the update this morning, Immediately ran Voodoo OTA RootKeeper. Root restored. Note: For all of you that have not run OTA RootKeeper before, make sure you run it first before you update to make a copy of your root. Then run OTA RootKeeper again after the update to restore root.

      • I did this, and my phone updated and rebooted. It now says “secure fail: kernel” in the upper left of the screen and there is a message on my screen that says, “system software not authorized by VZW has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest VZW store for help.” WTF!? Can someone tell me why this happened and how to fix, please?

        • To elaborate, I only have a rooted GS3, no custom rom. I have been regularly backing up data via Titanium Backup to my Google Drive. Not fully panicking but need some assistance! Thanks.

          • …anyone? Please help? I do need to do an Odin flash or something?

    • Zak Fliss

I have my SIII rooted running stock, I ran voodoo root keeper then updated. It ran the update and said it failed after the reboot but everything seems to have gone just fine. I’m now running version 4.1.2 with root still Intact

      • Same I used voodoo did the update… and then it said failed… checked and its at 4.1.2 hmmm

  • Chris Hollenbeck

    Got it.
    Northwest Washington.

  • Eric Laboy

Do you think this will be the last update for the vz galaxy nexus? Or do you guys think we will get 5.0? Sorry for jumping the gun just curious.

  • The new keyboard is far and above what the 4.1.1 one was… huge improvement…

  • amosk

Been stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S III bootup screen for a good 15 minutes now. Do I pull the battery?

    • Mine too. Just letting it sit pulled in for a while.

      • amosk

        • amosk

          Nevermind, pulling the battery…. 🙂

          • Please update if that works 🙂

          • amosk

OK, it’s coming back up now. I waited at least 20 mins on that screen. Wierd

          • I’m not sure if this is normal but I know when flashing roms most developers always say to give the first boot up at least 15-30min.

        • Mine stuck at S III bootup screen as well…anyone confirm that a battery pull will clear it up?

        • cmumathwhiz

Any updates on this issue – I’m having it too – let it sit for 45 mins and nothing. Any suggestions on what to do???

          • amosk

Pull it. I did after 20 min and then it booted up ok

          • cmumathwhiz

I’ve pulled several times, I think the issue is I forgot I customized a few files on the phone (I’m rooted) that must not like the OTA – I should have remembered and put the original files back. Time to try flashing!

  • Jordan Epps

Anyone notice the new unlock symbol after installation when rebooting?? Rooted btw

  • bigee1212

any word on if it fixes notification pull down lag ? (which gets unbearably bad wtih a few notification items?)

  • downloading now! sweetness.

    Hey Tim!

  • I thought it was odd SnapChat could take pictures while on a call, but the camera app couldn’t

  • tomn1ce

Interesting the G-Nexus is still on 4.1.1 o_0

    • tomn1ce

Why the down votes….vzw hasn’t released the official update to 4.2.2 for the G-Nexus…

      • huskerhog

        They are tonight. See above.

      • schoat333

        That’s droid life for ya.

      • michael arazan

First phone to beat the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon with a newer os update. Or did the DNA come with 4.1.2?

    • huskerhog
    • ToddAwesome

shouldn’t be for long, now that 4.2.2 is out there

  • guest

I downloaded it now I cant get my keyboard to stop vibrating when I type lame

  • Downloading now….

  • Austin Warren

I want 4.2 on my note 2 Damnit.

  • It also has an icon for “Group Play” now.

    • Todd Martineau

That is because the ‘Group Cast’ feature was separated from the AllShare Cast App a while back. At that time the Group Play app was supposed to automatically download but it didn’t. If you never updated Allshare Cast the Group Cast features were still there. But if you updated Allshare Cast they disappeared.

I contacted Samsung and they said it would be fixed in the next update. Looks like they were right. The Group Play app looks pretty nice. It looks easier than when it was part of AllShare Cast.

  • Rosepher Catervas

“Already”? Don’t you mean, “Finally!”? Considering 4.2 has been out for quote some time and they’re just now getting 4.1.2?

    • JoshGroff

This is Verizon we’re talking about, saying finally would just be redundant.

    • Own a Verizon Galaxy Nexus and then get upset. If you are looking for the lastest software update, root.

      • avinyc

Well except today owning a verizon gnex shouldn’t upset you. 22 days after releasing 4.2.2 the update leaked for everyone to enjoy. Fastest update since 4.0.4

    • The phone has been on 4.1.1 since mid-December, so this is just a small update and bug fixer. I think the “already” just means that we didn’t learn about this update through leaks long before it rolled out, which is unusual.

I suspect that a 4.2 update will drop in another couple months. It’s gotta go through Sammy and VZ, so yeah, that’s gums up the works pretty bad.

    • Ben

I don’t see a Sammy 4.2.2 update coming until Google fixes Bluetooth.

      • Jaron1226

What’s going on with the bluetooth?
