Verizon Galaxy Nexus 4.2.2 (JDQ39) Update Hits Testers, New Radios Included

Screenshot_2013-03-02-11-34-41 (1)

Earlier this week, Verizon’s official Twitter support account made mention of a new Galaxy Nexus update on the horizon. In fact, they said it would be here “soon,” prompting a little excitement from the G-Nex crew. What we weren’t sure about was whether or not this would be a 4.1.2 update or a big jump to 4.2.2, the current version of Android that almost all other Nexus devices are running. Thanks to a very special man with a very special version of the Galaxy Nexus, it looks like 4.2.2 might indeed be the build we see in the near future.

If you have followed along in the journey of the VZW G-Nex, then there is a better than average chance that you have grabbed an early test build for the device from El Madhatter, a long standing member of XDA. Well, we reached out to him this morning to check in on his device, and sure enough, he claims to have received 4.2.2 (JDQ39) this week. He also sent along the screenshot above. Unfortunately for our greedy update-needing purposes, he has already applied the update, is no longer rooted, and doesn’t have access to a computer. So any chance of us retrieving this update, are slim for the moment.

In good news, we are seeing new radios listed as FK01 and FK02.  The kernel appears to be somewhat old, but that could be for a variety of reasons.

If you want to follow along to see if someone in the community can get the file or URL of the file from his device, he has created a new XDA thread here.

We should also point out that another source of ours is also claiming that the next VZW G-Nex update will be 4.2.2.

Update:  Another XDA thread to keep an eye on. Looks like he was talking to another guy about the update and he’s been active there.

Cheers El Madhatter and Open1Your1Eyes0!

I was pretty sure we would have a colony on Mars first.

I just want my damn bluetooth range back.

  • Bionic

    Butt secks

  • Dean Milord

Let me tell you the minutethey try and force me out of my Unlimited data, I might just leave for Solavei!!!

  • M

Can anybody tell me approximately how much a Verizon Galaxy Nexus is worth these days? What’s a fair price to pay?

    • Steve Benson

Go on Swappa and see what they’re going for there. Last time I checked, a mint condition 32gb Gnex was going for between $230-250.

      • joejoe5709

Eh. I went to gazelle and they would only give me 80-90 bucks. So 200-250 sounds about right.

  • Stephen Parker

    I’m pretty agnostic about Verizon…
…they may I would like to believe they’ll update their devices, but the evidence points to nothing of the sort.

Verizon is the God of OTA updates.
    They don’t exist.

haha 4 months late. im on i5 now.

  • joejoe5709

If Verizon wasn’t so militant with locking down 80% of their phones, I’d say they were the world’s leading supporter of rooting and romming. Why else would they delay the updates so badly? (Ok guys… go easy. I’m only half joking here…) If there were a way to find out a fairly exact number, I’d be very interested in seeing how many GNex phones are rooted and rommed.

    • kevinc

      probably less than 10%

      • wm snyder

i would venture to say a whole lot more, from watching here at dl. tthey have about 5,000 ppl here that vote now multiply that times the other sites and you will have alot more than 10%

        • kevinc

most gnex owners don’t visit this site or any android sites.

          • Steve Benson

Actually, I’d bet it’s a lot more than 10%. The Gnex was a sales failure overall, but it was the go-to replacement for the OG Droid. It’s by far the biggest development phone since the OG. I’d say better than 50% are rooted based on limited sales.

    • joejoe5709

Of course a much much higher percentage of rooted Gnex’s – I’d wager well over 50%, probably closer to 60-75%. Rommed however, I’d say 50% or less. So this update is still a fairly major one. Imagine all those poor Gnexs without Lockscreen Widgets and Dashclock! Haha. Even better, I’d wager that 90% people that haven’t rooted this phone are those that don’t even know what rooting is. They simply bought this phone because it was basically Verizon’s equivalent of the GSII and therefore probably don’t know what they’re missing out on.

  • http://www.facebook.com/DCasper Dustin Casper

What does it mean that as soon as I saw “New Radios Included” I gasped. Am I doomed?

    • Steve Benson

Why would you be doomed? New radios mean better.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Christopher.Raymond.Brown Chris Brown

Any idea of when this is expected to drop? And how does one become a “tester?”

  • akazerotime

This story should have waited for the 6th day of nexus. I mean this is what most of us really want

  • jack

Google was smart for ditching lte cause they did not want to be on a carrier cause they know the middle man like Verizon would delay their updates. That’s why nexus phones with gsm n unlocked are the true nexus phones and nothing gets in the way of updates except Google

  • Steven Cornea

I would rather have them do this then do other meaning less updates that dont change anything

    4.1.2 didnt change anything,

4.2.1 had ALOT of bugs and if verizon would release that you would get a CRAP load of people complaining about this and that.

at least with 4.2.2 everything is mainly fixed.

I could care less about the 4.1.2 update and the 4.2.1 (hell I never wanted the 4.2.1 update).

    • Steven Cornea

it makes sense that verizon didnt release 4.2.1, if they do alot of testing, then they would have saw a huge issue with bluetooth and wifi and said, how can we release this to the people who pay over 100 a month for their phone? people would be pissed. I find it interesting that the binarys were released just the other day and already there is a build out days later.

that tells me that they had 4.2.2 already done and they were waiting for the binarys.

      • joejoe5709

One would like to think this was the problem… But they certainly didn’t have a problem with iOS6 and we all know how that story went.

  • Henry Babcock

Wow, cool timing. I just got my used Verizon Galaxy Nexus yesterday, after selling my S3 (pocketing over $300 difference, towards eventual Xphone or whatever I decide to go for next). I’m alreadyd running 4.2.2 (JDX 13.1 now) and loving it (no more horrible physical home button or touchwiz crap from my stock S3 etc etc), but excited about further Verizon optimization and especially about the new radios.

Already loving having a Nexus phone. This much maligned Verizon one is not seeming so crippled any more.. Will certainly tide me over a few months until a new better option emerges (Xphone I’m still hoping..).

  • Travis Felix

    I rooted 3 days Ago. I guess i’ll unroot and wait…or go paranoidandroid…

    • KleenDroid

There is never a reason to unroot.

      • hkklife

Warranty exchanges or selling a device.

        • KleenDroid

Yes, these are a couple good reasons.. :)

        • joejoe5709

Unlock, unroot and factory reset. Heck even unrooted, I’d factory reset it before exchanging or selling it. So that’s not a good enough reason.

  • Dave12308

How is it an old kernel? It’s the same version as the GSM Galaxy Nexus 4.2.2 OTA.

OT question for people here because everyone has their own opinion and I know at least some of you have these phones. I currently have a Galaxy Nexus, I love it, first nexus phone that I have ever bought, I am an aspiring app developer so thats why I got it but I have been looking alot into the Note 2 and am looking to upgrade to that in the next day or two, does anyone think the devs for the note 2 roms will be able to keep up with the coming Android updates in the future? Or should I just sit on my update until another Nexus phone comes along? Looking for opinions any will do, thank you.

    • kevinc

if you’re trying to become an app developer it doesn’t matter much since you’re writing applications, not developing ROMs for the phone. i would recommend testing your apps on old hardware and old versions of Android to make sure they still function.

  • http://twitter.com/hockey_david David Rando

can someone explain what new radios mean?

    • Steven Cornea

The radios are what your phone uses to make calls and connect to the network, the galaxy nexus has been plagued with bad call quality so new radios are always a good thing.

People are still waiting for this?

  • Brian Walker

I like to think that this is because I gave Verizon an earful about timely Nexus updates last month while processing my ETF. You’re welcome, everyone.

    • michael arazan

A lot of people have, including myself. Go to the Vzw.community and go to the Galaxy nexus phone forum, over half the post there are people just complaining about vzw stalling updates, and never saying a word. What sucks is that Vzw pays people to write in the forums and belittle customers who genuinely want help and are looking for advice and/ or answers like ann and tidbits

      • cphilano

That’s funny as hell that anybody who has visited the Verizon forum has run across that BS coming from tidbits. Just saw a thread by this dude claiming that Google was practicing anti competition with Google Wallet. I couldn’t believe the pile he laid out for people who didn’t know any better!

        • FLHC

The verizon forums are filled with verizon fanboys. I mentioned something about the nexus 4 in the forums not too long ago and it was nothing but verizon apologists defending their actions and saying it was google’s fault for not bringing it over.

They also said I didn’t know the purpose of the nexus, because it’s ‘a developer’s phone’. These are the people that BELIEVE in android skinning.

        • cmsfl70

I got into it with him in a thread which wound up being locked by a moderator. Tidbits totally took over my thread offering up excuses for Verizon being 4 updates behind. He had to get the last word in.

  • joejoe5709

Too little too late, but thanks for the update. I’m a poet and didn’t know it!

    • Brian P

Wow!… You can make a rhyme anytime!!!

  • Sean Lally

You know why this happened, right? Because I just gave up on them updating and flashed cm 10.1.

  • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Skittlez

thank god. now shiny can update using this and can possibly lengthen my battery life again

    • Daniel Clifford

Shiny has been fine with me. Running the 22nd build, no mods.

  • Tac

A sign of better treatment of nexus devices from Verizon? I sure hope so…

  • https://twitter.com/#!/MMcCraryNJ Michael McCrary

Lol at nearly everyone in this thread. For the last couple of months it was, “This is inexcusable. Verizon has no reason to hold up the updates like this. It’s not a REAL Nexus! I’m so disappointed, Google should NEVER work with Verizon again!”

And now that it looks like we’re getting (or, at the very least, Verizon is testing a release candidate) 4.2.2 in a REASONABLE time frame (it’s been like, 2 weeks? 3 weeks? Since it dropped onto all of the other Nexus devices, and two days after dropping into AOSP with updated binaries) the tune changes to, “See, if Google doesn’t release a CRAP update, Verizon is on top of it!”

I’ve been popping into these Verizon Nexus threads every so often to reminds everyone that 4.2 and 4.2.1 were filled with bugs that Verizon would never approve them, and everyone chewed my head off, saying I was either wrong or that they didn’t care, they just wanted the update. It just goes to show that Google could change nothing other than the build.prop in a point release and people would be upset if they didn’t have it.

Verizon just saved you all from multiple reboots, Bluetooth connection issues, garbage Bluetooth streaming quality, and extremely laggy lock screen widgets.

    • http://twitter.com/CJ_Matthews Matthew M

I already have multiple reboots on the crap version I have now, so it wouldn’t have been any different. I can’t begin to tell you how many times my phone either freezes and pushing the power button won’t turn the screen back on, even if my notification light still flashes, or that the phone will restart itself.

      • KleenDroid

What the heck are you running? Why don’t you simply fix it?

      • Steven Cornea

I’ve been running stock 4.1.1 and haven’t had any of these issues, don’t blame the phone, its the crap rom your running. And you probably dirty flashed everything and used titanium backup to restore all your app data. So ya your phone is gonna mess up when you do that.

ALWAYS start fresh when flashing a new ROM, NEVER dirty flash.

        • http://twitter.com/CJ_Matthews Matthew M

Excuse me, but I’m running stock. I have never flashed, unlocked, rooted, or any of that stuff. I don’t know how.

    • antinorm

So they would never approve an update that causes spontaneous reboots? Tell that to the Thunderbolt owners who got that OTA update that caused random reboots (multiple times a day for many people).

    • avinyc

I agree lots of people were upset and frustrated with Verizon. It still made it unfair to have a nexus and not be on par with all the GSM updated devices. But even though there is light at the end of the tunnel, everyone would have been less emotional had Verizon, Google, or Samsung provided status updates. That’s all, just official messages to the community about what was going on behind the scenes could have subdued the mob.

In any event, until this is released, there will be doubters abound. And once a new update comes along, the same arguments and complaints will flood the blogs.

    • http://brgulker.wordpress.com/ brgulker

I have been running 4.2.1 for weeks without any of these things.

As for Verizon “saving” me…that’s not what I signed up for when I bought a nexus.

  • DanWazz

Cool. 3800 mah how long does it last you ? I am talking heavy use. What’s your on screen time without WiFi. Most of these people that post these crazy on screen time are on WiFi.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=9407754 Will Fry

I did for the first few months but then after a while I started to notice that it didnt drain as fast as before.
also, I eventually got a second battery, and carry it with me whenever I will be out for an extended period.

    • Steven Cornea

Turning off 4g defeats the purpose of having a 4g phone.

      • wm snyder

that depends most of us work in a place where we dont have time to play on our phones so its smart to turn your 4g off and i might add walk out from work with 80% battery left. but i for one always want the 3g toggel option untill 4g can last all day long

  • http://www.facebook.com/vanhouse David VanHouse

    Hell has officially frozen over

  • Trevor

Wonder if the new radios will finally get rid of the one-way audio issues. I’ve had them with multiple Nexii from Verizon. It would be awesome if we actually got 4.2.2 vs older iterations of Android. Yay for updates!!

    • bananatroll

      lol you said nexii

  • Artune

I truly am shocked that they are doing this but I’m man enough to applaud the effort when it is due. Good job Vzw, good job.

  • duke69111

Upgrading us straight to 4.2.2 kind of takes some of the fun out of bagging on Verizon Wireless.

    • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Just give it like or 3 months when the next version of Android is released and EVERY nexus device except the VZ GNexus is being updated….

      • Steven Cornea

If the release is buggy as all hell like 4.2 ,ya I would want them to wait. And they are probably gonna add new radios and wait for Google to release the binarys. Binary released a few days ago and a new build came out the other day, Verizon was probably waiting on Google.

  • flycast641

      • Jimneezy

  • Ethan Ash

It’s entirely true that Verizon has screwed us over royally in this, but I can at least give credit where it’s due in being grateful for (relatively) quick integration of 4.2.2 – it did only ship a few weeks ago. That shows at least marginal awareness of GNex users’ actual inclinations and beats the heck out of what I anticipated – 4.2.1 or even lower.

    • Jeremy Couch

There’s an expression “Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched”. I’ll call it a “quick” update if it rolls out within the next two months.

      • Ethan Ash

Completely agree. It’s been as much as month from these first rumblings to the actual rollout (another 2-3 weeks for that to progress), so you may be spot on. But considering that this’ll theoretically put the VZW Nexus ahead of Sprint (a first), that’s also welcome. It’ll be interesting to see what Verizon actually delivers (and if this is our last official OTA upgrade, which I strongly suspect).

        • Tyler Cameron

Something tells me the Galaxy Nexus will be updated up to Android 6.0

          • Ethan Ash

Yes, but will Verizon so generously continue to “test” them and actually end up pushing them? There’s no precedent, so who knows what they’ll do now that they’ve put it in EOL status.

  • bull3964

    Moral of the story?

If Google doesn’t put out a crap update, it doesn’t take as nearly as long to clear testing. It’s pretty plain at this point that 4.2 and 4.2.1 just weren’t capable of passing Verizon testing (and I can pretty much agree with that statement.)

    • http://twitter.com/sleepyguy007 hans wee

given how buggy some of the other versions are (relative to my droid razr m) and random reboots and such, on the galaxy nexus, i feel like verizon is almost justified in not releasing a lot of the nexus updates. they are shoddy updates from google half the time.

      • Michael Quinlan

I hate to admit it, but there were a series of crappy updates from Google. My bluetooth was broken for months, and if it weren’t for being rooted, it would have been broken for months longer.

      • Steven Cornea

If you ask me 4.2 has been the windows vista of the android os. I would rather have Verizon wait till Google fixes all the bugs then release a crap update.

          • C-Law

Yup I had to do the same but then I dropped it and cracked the screen and was sad until I bought a gs3 and it may not be a nexus but they sure did improve battery life. I get longer battery life with 4g on than I did with 4g off on my gnex. I’m still gonna download this update on my gnex though

There is never a reason to unroot for an ota. Yet there are some people who always do it. If you want stock so badly just wait ten minutes after the ota goes out and someone will have a stock rooted version posted.
