Google’s New Nexus 7 Ad is Nothing but Animated Fun

nexus 7 ad

Google’s newest Nexus 7 ad just appeared over at the Nexus YouTube channel and I’m a fan. I’d try to explain the animations in some sort of design speak, but you should just watch it and enjoy. You will see the spot highlights the device’s 10 hour battery life and the access it gives you to tons of content in Google Play.

    Lame commercial.

I don’t know about 10 hour battery life, unless they mean “the battery dies in 10 hours whether you’re using the tablet or not.”

I actually think battery life is borderline unacceptable in both the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.

    • KleenDroid

That’s odd, my Nexus 7 has pretty good battery life. Of course mine is not stock. I run the Atom ROM on my Nexus 7. I’ve never used a Nexus 10.

      • http://twitter.com/HughHansen Hugh Hansen

Well, everything’s relative. They’re better than the Nexus 4, but much worse than the iPad.

My biggest complaint is how much battery they lose while in standby.

        • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

Mine loses about 20-30% a day in standby…which is pretty high. I can cut them down to near nothing by turning off wifi when screen is off… but that gets rid of too much functionality for me.

Awesome ad!!! My favorite part is where the soldier returns from years of war and says, “hey, you put your chocolate in my peanut butter!”. And then his wife is all like, “No, you put your peanut butter in my chocolate!”. And they both laugh and stuff. Wait. Nevermind.

  • r0lct

Despite all these commercials I still haven’t met anyone who wasn’t into tech who knows what a Nexus anything is. They need more marketing.

    • KleenDroid

When I purchased my Nexus 7 back in November at Game Stop the guy said they were selling like crazy. Someone must be hearing about them.

      • r0lct

Well there certainly are, I’m just saying get 100 random people in a room and I bet (aka guessing) 80+ will know what an iPad is and maybe 5-10 will know what a Nexus device is.

        • KleenDroid

Yes and it wouldn’t hurt if they sold them everywhere.

I think it was a test to see how well they would do. In the future I bet they will push it more since it has done pretty well.

  • RAZR_FANN

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Nexus 7, but where are the Nexus 10 ads?

    • r0lct

I think they were waiting until they had more than 100 in stock before doing that.

  • Raven

Too bad I can’t watch it in my browser on my Nexus 7.

    • billy routh

Why cant you? Flash works on it

      • Raven

It doesn’t work in Chrome or Dolphin at all. It almost worked in Firefox, but no audio and stopped part way through. How would you suggest?

        • Austin Warren

Go to the actual YouTube app?

    • http://twitter.com/kirilv Kiril

That’s actually Droid Life’s fault. They need to use Google’s iFrame embed code, and not the Flash object code. That way, you’ll be Flash on the desktop, and HTML5 on mobile. On other sites, I can watch videos embedded on the webpages.

    • KleenDroid

      Works just fine on mine.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aliff.alfiry Aliff Alfiry

The music is so similar to the Sims

    • Double Edge

This music sucks, but the animation is awesome…

  • James

    Oh, Nexus 7, how I love thee…

  • NoBullet

Wait a second. So did they hire the guy that made this fan-made Nexus ad?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TJ6uvN6hoqg

    Thats pretty cool.

    • baconslayer09

From the looks of it, they probably did. Unless Google decided to blatantly rip off that other ad.

    • http://twitter.com/Twitteninja Zargh

It’s not “some guy”, it’s an ad agency which Google has contracted in the past.

    • StDevious

That isn’t fan-made. That’s the marketing company Google hired to do these ads.

      • NoBullet

Every site was calling it fanmade, pretty sure even DL. Mostly because it wasnt an official google ad.

    • http://andymerskin.com/ Andy Merskin

This one is WAY better than the one referenced in this article, IMO.

    • NoellyNturrall

      Thumbs Up

    • NoellyNturrall

as Ann replied I’m in shock that a person can make $6065 in 1 month on the internet. have you read this link

  • http://twitter.com/NovembersDirge The Observer

It’s so nice to see that not only is Google is finally advertising their devices, but the commercials are so damn good.

  • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

Were there significant battery life improvememnts in 4.2.2? I’ve never managed to get more than 7 myself.

    • http://www.AndroidAllies.com/ Max M.

My Gnex(toro) is running a PUB build of 4.2.2 AOKP and the battery life has been great. I usually charge it before bed, then take it off and I wake up with ~75-80% left, but this morning I woke up with 92%.

Haven’t tried it on my N7 yet. :C

      • JetBlue

Why not just turn it off and have it be at 100% when you turn it on?

        • http://twitter.com/Fresh2infinity Marcos

Because there are things called emergencies which require people to get a hold of you

          • http://www.AndroidAllies.com/ Max M.

This, and it is also my alarm clock. Then I just charge it up while I’m getting ready in the morning and it is usually back up to ~100%.

          • JoeyKhache

Big thumbs up to that one. Its a great thing for one person to not only think of ones self but also the needs of others. Everyone should be aware of their surroundings.

      • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

That kind of standby has been obtainable for sometime with the Gnex with custom ROMS/Kernels. Mine & my wife’s never lost more than .5% per hour screen off. Now screen on…that always feel like pouring water out of a bucket.

        • KleenDroid

Every night I unplug my phone before bed at 100%. When I wake in the morning I am always at 90%. So it loses 10% while doing nothing over 8 hours.

          • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

It has a lot to do with your cellular signal strength.I always keep mine plugged in at night…probably from anxiety some crazy wakelock would drain my battery and the alarm wouldn’t go off.

          • KleenDroid

I have somewhat poor reception in my house. I seem to have this thing finely tuned now. But I know what you mean. Back when I first got the phone I had a few times where the thing seemed to die almost instantly. Luckily that stuff is easily fixed.

      • Sean Quinlan

Hope the improvements are as profound as you say they are, battery life is the one thing I hate about my gnex. And out of curiosity, why don’t you charge your phone over night?

        • http://www.AndroidAllies.com/ Max M.

I used to, but I feel like sitting on the charger for that long could be bad. My battery started to crap out at about 7 months into having the phone. So I got a new one and I try to not keep it sitting on the charger.

    • Jwhap

I noticed a huge improvement in battery life! Not sure if it is 10 hours but a huge improvement non the less.
