Droid Life Q&A Sessions: Volume 10

Q&A

Well, we have made it to Volume 10 of the DL Q&A Sessions. We have MWC coming up later this month, plus it would appear we are going to have a brand new HTC flagship device tomorrow morning. With these posts, it’s the perfect way to ask the DL staff something Android-related, personal, or anything else you can think of.

We will be taking a handful of questions and answering them this Friday, so let’s do this! Drop down below in the comments and let us know what is on your mind.

To see all of our previous Q&A’s, check them out here.

  • Legionaire

Ok, so Google Glass brings up some concerns for connectivity. “How?” being the main concern. Is it going to run on open Wifi, or be connected to a carrier? I started to think that the wireless network Google is testing at HQ, my have something to do this. Maybe they plan on going global and will create a network specifically for Glass, with the network expanding for the Nexus line of devices. Has this crossed anyone else’s mind? What are your thoughts for how Google plans to keep Glass connected?

    • Fattie McDoogles

I think it’ll be an extension of your phone.

Only one serious question… Who is Tim242 and why is he EVERYWHERE?

  • John

Do you guys(DL staff) not think it’s a little strange how many pairs of shoes K owns?

    • Fattie McDoogles

      How many does he own?

      • John

Dunno the exact count but I’d say 20+ given the amount of images I’ve seen him post on his Instagram

        • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

          Hey, I’m a shoe guy. :P

  • James Jun

Let’s hear it. 3 things out of the top of your head that your expecting at Google I/O besides the obvious (Key Lime Pie).

  • Serf33

I read through one page and one glaring question stood out in my mind: Who the hell is Tim242 and why is he answering all of the questions?

  • Dylan Patel

Do you guys have any individual Blogs, youtube pages, or websites, and can I get a link. Also, Where can I find you guy’s individual twitters, or are thoes private?

  • http://twitter.com/ChrisCorp ChristopherCorpening

For those of us still on Verizon using the grandfathered in unlimited plans with our new phone every two years contract – most of us have the GNex – what do you think our next phone upgrade should be and should we be waiting for any particular announcement/phone?

  • KOBALT

Do you stand up to wipe, or stay seated?

  • wm snyder

what new advances has the rom community has come up with?

    • Tim242

All apps in multi-window. Something Verizon and Samsung refuse to do. Per app DPI, tablet UI in your selected apps.

      • wm snyder

        kool

  • AranelAlasse

Will Google ever get their act together and provide a standard printing solution for Android? (So we can print easily/quickly from INSIDE of ANY app? (instead of switching to a third party app to do it?))

    • Tim242

You should be able to do that via share to Wi-Fi Direct.

  • Raven

Will Motorola (or anyone else) ever produce another high-end physical keyboard Android phone?

    • Tim242

      No.

  • wm snyder

what new tech is out there for the future phone what can we expect, new type battery? is android going to revamp it ui? is there new blue tooth tech out there? new wifi tech? new wireless rendering? you get the ideal right?

    • Tim242

      HOLOgraphs.

      • wm snyder

        battery sucker…….damn!

  • Brandon Shaw

    This is a 2 part questions…
1)If your contract was about to expire would you leave that carrier (Verizon for me) for a pre paid service? If so which one? I feel like pre paid services are the future of providing cell service. It will allow people to buy the phone they want, for the plan they want and switch WHEN they want

2)Will the rumors of Google and Dish Network getting in the game of providing cellular coverage help this pre paid movement?

    • Tim242

      1. No. Prepaid is too data restricted.

      2. Too early too tell.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bmyton Ben Myton

Will you guys ever rename the site? It drives me nuts when people look at an S3 and ask “is that one of those Droid phones?”

I think if you guys were to put together the top 5 smart phones on the market right now you probably wouldn’t find a “Droid” brand on the top of the list. Can you see a time when the site resumes the “anDroid-life” name?

    • Raven

I am not exactly sure where they fall in rankings, but 2 of the best phones out are still the Droid RAZR Maxx HD and the Droid RAZR M.

      • Tim242

Not really. Displays suck. I mean really suck.

    • Tim242

When George Lucas sues. Answered in DL Show, episode 15.

  • zUFC

Yes i have a question. When in the hell are some new phones coming out!!!! I’ve never seen a dry spell like this. I have the stupid DNA and can’t stand sense anymore. I’m hoping that this is going to be the year they come out with perfect phones. Long batt life(like MAXX) and light skins (Motorola) and soft keys!!!!!!! etc, etc.
I can’t take it anymore. No go on the S4 because of touchwiz and that stupid home button.

    • Tim242

      Stay tuned…

  • http://www.facebook.com/bmyton Ben Myton

Does the DL crew give other Mobile OSes serious test drives (3-5 days use) to keep perspective on your Android reviews?

I see a lot of comparisons in reviews between different Android devices, but rarely do you see a line like “the camera does better in low light than HTC WinPhone 8x but still not quite as good as the iPhone 5″.

    • Tim242

      Of course.

      • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

How do you know we do? :P

        • Tim242

Because you say so on the podcast errr DL show. I’m a good listener.

    • Chris

Well I know that Ron has spent a lot of time with Windows Phone and the iPhone (see his opinion posts). So maybe if he did an Android phone review he would make those points you spoke of?

  • Alex Mosqueda

Why were you all so quick to dismiss BlackBerry as a viable os you guys gave windows 8 a shot why not blackberry? I would argue blackberry has a better ot at making a comeback then windows does just because of the developer support that was present at launch

    • Tim242

Put lipstick on a BB, it’s still a BB.

      • Fattie McDoogles

And what happens when you put lipstick on an Android phone?

  • Brent Cooper

Do you think Google will release a Nexus(or XPhone possibly) that is sold through the Play store that will work on Verizon’s LET, as well as all carriers? If so do you think we will see it this year?

    • Tim242

Not for CDMA carriers. Certainly not for Verizon. CDMA is proprietary, and Verizon is a control freak.

  • Dave

    Please more M7 hype….the DNA+ just can’t wait.

    • Tim242

      DNA+ – .3″ on the display…

  • Lunkman

I have a Droid Razr with an upgrade due in July. Will we see the X Phone by then, and if not should I wait for it or go with S4? I would go Nexus 4,but I Verizon is the only way to go where I live.

    • Tim242

Nobody knows when the X phone will land, or where. You should wait until the phone that tickles you the right way comes along.

  • wh1te_mag1c

Do you believe in being ‘on the cutting edge’ of phones as practical
for tech junkies? I understand that as blog writers, you might be
biased, but I’ve been entertaining the thought of leaving the subsidized
new phone approach, but also avoiding the new, unsubsidized phone
approach, as well. If you stay behind the cutting edge by some months,
you still end up having a great device, with far more ROMs and other customizations available, all at a fraction of the cost.

    • Tim242

That is only something you can decide. That’s like asking if you should buy a phone now, or wait.

  • Wyveryx

Do you feel that stock Android is on the right track for consumers or is Google allowing it to be messed with too much by carriers?

    • Tim242

      Yes and yes.

  • KnappyRoot

What ROM lasted the longest on your daily driver? How long before you switch to a different ROM?

    • Big_EZ

I’d love to know their favorite rom, and if they prefer any customized touchwiz, blur or sense roms over AOSP.

      • Fattie McDoogles

You should know the answer to the second part of that… They have said on numerous occasions how much they don’t like skins.

        • Big_EZ

But they have said that like some features from some of the OEMs so I want to know if they have a particular rom from touchwiz, blur, or sense that has features they use on a regular basis. I don’t like skins either, but on most devices stripped down OEM roms run better than AOSP. Also on my Note 2 I’m stuck on touchwiz because I’m not giving up multi window, and it’s not that bad.

    • Tim242

AOKP Verizon GNex. Used it for a year before getting the Note II.

  • JBartcaps

Would you buy an iPhone just to break it?

    • Tim242

No. I am not poor. Wasting money would be stupid.

  • John B

I am going to buy my first tablet this year. I have a GN but I am seriously considering an ipad. What’s coming up with the nexus tablets that I should know about?

    • Tim242

Nexus 10. Anything else is just a guess.

  • Kerry Fath

Will we see a Nexus 5 this year??

    • Tim242

Of course. But maybe not by that name.

  • Derek Duncan

would you recommend the Nexus 4?

    • Tim242

Yes and no. You have to make that decision.

  • Akeem McAllister

What is your favorite college team?

    • Brent Cooper

YES! We hear so much about pro sports but hardly anything about the college games

    • Tim242

      Razorbacks, of course.

  • Akeem McAllister

What size phone feel the most comfortable and why?

    • Tim242

Whichever one feels most comfortable to you.

  • t3chi3

When is the projected date for the Sony Xperia Z and ZL to be released?

    • Tim242

      None yet for the US.

    • Fattie McDoogles

I think I remember seeing something about AT&T picking up the Z but I don’t think anyone is getting the ZL in the states. You will probably have to import it. Preorders went up in Australia today.

  • ace

Kellen how did you become a Braves fan living in Portland?

  • Akeem McAllister

What is the best phone to purchase right now that keep a consumer comfortable with their purchase amongst the release of new phone not only on the Android platform but other OS’s?

    • Tim242

Any with 2GB of RAM, and quad core.

      • Akeem McAllister

        Thanks

  • Akeem McAllister

Will service providers change their business model once more people go to Pre-paid services?

    • Tim242

Nope. Too many people are addicted to subsidies and good phones.

  • http://twitter.com/hockey_david David Rando

when will my Verizon GNex get a 2.2 update, or will it ever?

    • JetBlue

Not sure why you would want to go to Froyo from Jellybean. Hopefully you meant 4.2.2 instead.

      • Tim242

        Of course.

    • Tim242

As soon as you install that ROM.

      • http://twitter.com/hockey_david David Rando

        opps yeah 4.2.2

  • Akeem McAllister

What phone is the Android community looking forward to the most?

    • Tim242

X Phone. Unless HTC pulls a miracle out of Peter’s a$$

  • Trevor

Once Verizon’s LTE rollout is complete, and they have VoLTE up and running (with compatible phones), do you think VZW will become more like a GSM carrier in that we’ll be able to pop a sim into an unlocked phone – provided it’s running the correct LTE frequency(ies) – and use it to our heart’s desire?

Spinoff question: If the answer to the first one is “yes,” do you think Google will ever sell Nexus’s through the play store that will work on VZW LTE?

    Thanks!

    • Tim242

You can already do that, the LTE bands just aren’t there. I’m thinking Verizon is too much of a control freak to let that happen through the Play Store.

  • http://twitter.com/dtriscari19 David Triscari

When do you guys think Verizon will kick everyone off unlimited data, and how will they do it? I can see them offering free upgrades to those to go onto tiers, etc. but at some point it wont be an option anymore, right?

    • Tim242

As long as you are buying full retail, or bring your own, we will keep it. They are making money either way. I am buying a new phone once per year at full retail. That’s $60/ no extra for them over that year. You will be month to month. Would they risk losing you? I ddon’t think so.

    • sarah

Well of course it will be when Sarah Silverman decides enough is enough. Seeing as how she controls Verizon like its wrapped around her little finger.

  • EvanTheGamer

What ROM(custom or fully stock) are you guys sporting right this very second?

    • Tim242

Jelly Beans build 9, Note II.

  • EvanTheGamer

What is your all-time favorite Android game, and why?

    • Tim242

Who has time for games? Games are for kids and deadbeats

  • EvanTheGamer

If you could create a hybrid animal, what two animals would you use, and why?

    • Tim242

      Really?

      • Mack

        Absolutely.

      • EvanTheGamer

        Yes, really.

    • John

      a Liger

  • Danny Sullivan

Do you think we’ll see another Nexus phone on Verizon?

    • Tim242

HELL NO! Did you even have to ask?

  • Kevin Bojarski

What are your daily devices (phones, PCs, tablets), and how do you use them for what tasks?

    • Tim242

      Self Explanatory.

      • Mack

        Not really.

  • http://twitter.com/LoganLopez Logan Lopez

Besides the main 5 of you, were there others on staff of DL? If so, why did they leave?

    • Tim242

They ran away. They are dearly missed.

    • Sarah

Well there was once Sarah Silverman, but she was just too prude and straight laced. We needed people who don’t take life too seriously and have humor and sarcasm.. Geez uhh duhh.

  • marlen

When is gslll getting 4.2 on Verizon

    • Tim242

When Verizon releases it. That’s the only answer to that question.

  • Jared

Does Ubuntu phone interest you and would you like to see parts of it in future versions of Android?

    • Tim242

      No and no.

    • michael arazan

Do you Think the average consumer will know what Ubuntu is and is this HTC Ubuntu device geared for the average consumer. My brother is excited about a linex tablet & phone but he is Tech savvy, but I have never used or seen one and don’t know anything about it or what a Linux system os can offer.

      • Jared

In my opinion, no, the average consumer probably won’t know… at first. Technically, Android is a Linux based OS and uses a Linux kernel, so you have used one if you’ve used Android. The supposed advantage of Ubuntu for Phones is that it will give a person pretty much full computer power in their smartphone, once it is docked, at least. At this point, this is speculation because they haven’t released the images for flashing. I’m intrigued to see what it brings to the table because of the possibilities. Back to your original question, I think that average consumers are becoming more and more aware of Linux, especially Ubuntu, as an alternative to the status quo (Windows). We’ll have to see what happens over the next year though.

  • http://twitter.com/davidbavin David Bavin

What kind of cars do you guys drive?! Always wanted to ask!

    • EvanTheGamer

YOU son of a! That was MY question! lol

      • http://twitter.com/davidbavin David Bavin

HA! SUCKA :D few seconds late lol

        • EvanTheGamer

Actually, more like 1 second. Regardless of that, it doesn’t say who asked it first..since that question was asked at almost literally the same time. So…. ;) lol

Or I just f’d up by saying that you beat me to the punch. DAMNIT!

          • http://twitter.com/davidbavin David Bavin

Lol just hope it gets answered… and I’ll be happy

          • EvanTheGamer

            That would be cool. haha

          • http://twitter.com/davidbavin David Bavin

I’m the one that actually suggested to start this whole Q&A series… :) and my suggestion was approved!

          • EvanTheGamer

            Apparently! lol Nice!

    • Mack

I feel like Kellex drives a sedan and Tato rolls in a lifted truck haha.

      • John

Watch tato have a smart car

        • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

          Gross. lol

    • Futbolrunner

Ron did say he drives a Prius lol

  • http://twitter.com/rbrtwillis Robert Willis

Will the 5.5+inch screen form factor become the standard minimum over time?

    • Tim242

      No.

      • Chris

        Agreed sir

    • Fattie McDoogles

      Probably 4.7/8

  • EvanTheGamer

What kind of cars does the Droid-Life crew drive?

Also, what weapon would you use in the eventual zombie apocalypse?

And how much do you think the SGS4 will be priced at?

    • Tim242

      1. GMC Truck
      2.
      3. $199.99, plus applicable taxes.

      • Mack

You do realize that these questions are for the DL crew, not you right?

        • Tim242

          Huh? Whaaaat?

          • EvanTheGamer

            LMAO!

        • EvanTheGamer

          LOL!

  • Captain_Doug

What are your deal breakers in a smartphone? Will you buy a phone with a non-removable battery? Non hd screen? no microsd card?

    • Tim242

Bad camera, bad display. Removable batteries are nice, but not required. SD cards are so 2011…and fragile.

      • Captain_Doug

MicroSD cards are fragile? Since when? They don’t break when you drop them, some are water/x-rayproof. They’re too small to hurt by sitting on them. How are they fragile?

        • Tim242

Random unmounts and formatting. Easy to lose if you remove them.

          • Captain_Doug

I haven’t had any of those problems but I agree that those happen. I guess I just forgot.

  • http://twitter.com/ryan_wakefield Ryan Wakefield

How long until we see verizon make phones without 3G and just go to a pure 4G LTE Phone? Any chance that the S4 does not have 3G?

    • WAldenIV

That won’t happen for several years. There is no part of the country that is completely covered by 4G, no matter what the maps from Verizon look like.

    • Tim242

7 years, when they no longer use 3G.
