FlashME Turns Your Android Phone’s Flash Into a Notification Light

YouTube Preview Image

Just in case the front notification light on your device wasn’t getting the job done, we wanted to point out this app called FlashME that turns your phone’s rear camera flash into the ultimate notifier. In the free version, you can set it up to flash during calls and text messages, but if you want more control, you’ll have to pony up $0.99 for the full version which then allows you to pick and choose which apps are attached to FlashME.

I will say that the app is a bit intense and probably wouldn’t work for me on a daily basis. With that said, I can see how there could be times when you need some extra notification juice and this may come in handy.

Lightflow already has this feature, just so you know.

I wonder how much this app would shorten the life of the LED flash? I know some people who would look like a disco ball with all that flashing.

  • Rob Reason

SInce I purchased tasker I have implimented this feature for when my phone is face down.

This doesn’t seem right. Flashme controls the standard notification led, not the camera flash.
Beacon might be the app you’re looking for: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.monopoint.beacon

I don’t know why this is getting such negative reviews. Personally, I like it. My phone is usually on vibrate or silent, so this, apart from the temporary blindness, is pretty useful.

This wouldn’t be annoying at all…

I could see fun and evil applications of this. E.g. installing it on a friends phone while you are playing with it. :)

    • JoshGroff

Especially if they have a custom launcher so you can hide it from them.

Pfft, I’ve had this with Tasker for a loooonnng time. And to use it more appropriately, it’s only on between certain night time hours, so that if I am awake I’ll be able to see it. Or, more useful, when I’m working on a music project or playing games. Plus, it can toggle it on/off if I happen to be at a movie, funeral, what have you.

Care to share the profile for tasker? Would love to have it. I’m sure I could get tasker to do it, but if you’ve already taken the time to set it up, why reinvent the wheel, right? :)

A kid sitting in front of me at a movie recently had a similar app on his iPhone that kept going off the whole movie. Apparently multiple LED flashes are less distracting in a completely dark environment then a notification tone. Who knew?

Sounds like a great way to Burn out the Flash and Eat a lot of Battery life

Some girl had something like this on her phone last time I was at the movies. I don’t know if it was Android or iPhone but she kept sending texts and lighting up the whole damn theater.

I threw popcorn at her until she stopped.

  • Detonation

This sounds like a terrible idea.

Apps like these were originally developed for the iPhone since it didn’t (still doesn’t?) have a notification LED. No need to go backwards with android, in my opinion.

I was going to say this too. I knew a guy who had this on his iPhone, and it was one of the most annoying things ever. Also, I imagine that this would suck for battery life if you don’t check your notifications right away.

      • Droidzilla

Yep. It was just one more thing in the long, long list of iPhone tweaks to make it function more like an Android.

Pretty sure the setting is found under the Accessibility section, implying that it was implemented for those with hearing impairment, not as a way to “fix” Apple’s “perfect” device.

Just as a warning – if you do decide to use this app, and you’re riding in an automobile with someone at nighttime in the rain, please, PLEASE disable it if you’re going to leave your phone out in the open. My girlfriend has something similar on her iPhone, and she temporarily blinded me while I was driving.

Funny, I usually temporarily blind my girlfriend while I’m driving..

      Isn’t everything? /s

To be fair, they do have some nice features baked in that I’d love to see ported to stock.

      Yep.
