Video: Quick Look at the Nexus 4 Bumper Case

LG Nexus 4 Bumper Case

When the bumper case for the Nexus 4 went back on sale earlier in the week, I caved in and bought one. After having a well-documented, not-so-awesome time with the glass on my first Nexus 4, I decided that this time around I would do everything in my power to protect the second one. So, bumper case we go. The most surprising part about it may be the fact that it arrived already, as in, a day and a half after ordering it. Not bad.

So what do I think? Well, it provides just the right amount of protection. You can set the phone face down or face up and the bumper’s lip should keep both surfaces off the ground/table/naked body. It’s minimal enough that it shouldn’t get in your way or make the phone feel too bulky in hand. But most importantly, it allows you to still see that beautiful Crystal Reflection backside. Mmmhmm.

Is it worth $20 plus the $6 in shipping? If you have already broken one glass back, it probably is.

  • Haha!! 1:36 in the video: “Headphone jack on the top.. that should be on the bottom…” *under his breath*

    • Droidzilla

I prefer it on the top.
      . . .
      . . .
That’s what she said! But seriously, I’d rather have the headphone jack on top than on bottom. It’s preference; there really isn’t a “correct” way.

      • Yeah, I don’t care either way really. It helps to have it on the bottom when I’m in the car and I’ve got the power plugged (to my Galaxy Nexus), but I really wouldn’t care if they would just release their accessories for their phones. I’ve been waiting to get the Car Dock for my GNex for about a year now.

        • Droidzilla

Just get a generic. The novelty of the nice fit and finish of an OEM will fade in less than a week.

          • I wanted the car dock mainly for the convenience of the Pogo pins. It’s annoying to manage all the cables in my car with the way it’s all setup. But it’s not all that bad I guess.

          • Droidzilla

Forgot about the pogo pins; that is a nice feature.

  • JMonkeYJ

i didn’t watch the video, but i have to say i’m really not liking the lip on the front. the glass on the front of the N4 is so wonderful with the rounded edges and whatnot. the ease of swiping and using the touchscreen is definitely one of its best features. and it gets covered with the bumper, from what i can see 🙁

    • Droidzilla

I don’t think there’s any way around covering that if you want protection, but I’ll agree that side to side swiping (especially things like accessing the camera from the lock screen) is a delight on the Nexus 4.

  • Nexus 4 should be one of the worst phones ever made. I just don’t even know who the idiot was that thought a glassback was a good idea(ESPECIALLY after the iPhone. We all laughed at the iPhone 4 and 4s, but at least they learned. I think the fact that a phone needs any kind of protection, it isn’t manufactured well enough. I just hope that next time its a Motorola Nexus. The Droid DNA looks like a damn good phone too. But Nexus 4 has to be a joke, it just has to be.

    • Droidzilla

After owning one for almost a week, I can’t disagree with you more. The phone is beautiful and stupid fast. Great screen, fantastic feel, stock Android with fast updates; really a stellar device.

As for the glass back, that’s a design decision. I for one thought Apple was foolish not to have a glass back, but to make a glass back that didn’t have hardened glass. The N4 is Gorilla Glass 2 front and back, so it won’t get micro scratches from being in a case and then magically shatter. Yes, there are issues with a glass back; but that’s a design compromise. Unless you make something like the Casio G’Zone, you’re making compromises for design over durability.

I’m no iPhone fan, but in all honesty the glass back was loved by many for its classiness and certainly didn’t hurt sales for the 4/4S. That antenna, on the other hand . . .

      • I’ve dropped my Galaxy Nexus many times, and it still just about looks good as new. A lot of people complained about the plastic casing for it, but damn is it durable. Never once have I needed a case for it. I tried a silicone case that wraps around its back, but found it to be too bulky, and decided that I can use my Nexus just the way it is.

        • Droidzilla

I was the exact same way with my Droid RAZR. Plastic is a great material for smartphones; durable, great signal transduction, temperature resistant, etc. Still have to say that I absolutely love the look and feel of my Nexus 4, though.

          • FLHC

This is comforting also coming from a RAZR. I’ve voluntarily dropped my phone so many times just to show how resilient these phones are. Of course, I won’t do that with my nexus.. something I’ll miss but still good to hear that coming from a previous RAZR owner.

          • Droidzilla

The Nexus 4 feels downright fragile compared to my Droid RAZR, but my Droid RAZR feels downright chintzy compared to my Nexus 4. It’s a trade off, but I try to enjoy both for their strengths rather than lament both for their weaknesses.

  • andrew galvin

just got mine today and i hate how it feels in hand. Makes the phone feel 30% bulkier

    • Bob G

Tell us again how you feel after an hour into it. I know I hated it at first, but now love it.

  • classic

Ha! That reminds me of the time I was riding on a camel in the Australian outback. There was this lady running through the field with a bonnet on and yelling at the cab driver about the monkey wrench. The guy says, “Hey you!” and then everyone fell off the bench. I was like, wait…what!?! But the guitar strings were too stretched to fit in the cement truck. I mean, really!!! CLASSIC!!! I know, right?!

  • People keep saying “OMG $25 for a bumoer!!!”. This is probably the nicest bumper I have ever seen for a phone. It has different textures and the buttons are just like pushing the buttons on the phone. Its not just a piece of injected molded garbage. I personally think $25 is a decent price considering cheaper feeling bumpers are 10 – 15.

  • Abe

how many more posts of this bumper are we going to see ? , bumper in stock , bumper out of stock , bumper showcase , bumper back in stock.. seriously !!!

  • QuadNexus

+1 to the n4. ive been playin with the one i got for the gf and im starting to like it more and more over the gs3 and the n2. something about the super round corners on the samsung phones. but arg the onscreen nav buttons ingame are killing me!

    • Bob G

That’s the game dev fault for not making those go away 🙁

  • Chris

I can confirm that the Jellybean update is here, I just updated mine over wifi! 😀

    • Chris

Sorry this doesn’t relate I just didn’t know where else to put it.

      Kellex B @Tim-o-tato

  • Liderc

Sorry, thought I was on a Droid site, these iPhone bumpers confused me.

    What has happened to us!?

    • My Bionic is case free (MOTO build quality!!!) but if I were to get a phone with a glass back, then I would get a bumper case. What is the point of a manufacturer making a phone look good if everyone puts a full case on it?

  • Hatyrei

Do u guys have any tips when will be the next stock? I hope I can get mine before Christmas. 🙁

  • I just got mine also but i don’t have a Nexus 4 yet…. Hurry up google!

  • socalrailroader

If you think 26 bucks is a lot, you should see what people are charging on eBay, OUCH!

  • socalrailroader

He said stiff, uh huh huh huh uh huh huh huh

    • “I guess you just stick it right in and that’s it..?”

  • I can’t justify buying $26 on a case.

    • Steve Benson

I hope you can justify another $299 when you drop a naked N4 and it shatters.

Like someone else said, this is without a doubt the nicest bumper case I’ve ever seen made for a phone.

      • Wouldn’t the rearth ringke case be just as good? $17 Cheaper and covers the whole backside. Not to mention the bumper being just as scarce if not worse than the N4

  • Plerisei

I hope otterbox makes a case, I do not want to break this when I get it.

  • Bruce Vazquez

Received mine today too and my rearth case from amazon.

  • It does not keep surfaces off naked body.

  • Art Carter

  • Just when I thought I saw it all…$26 for a bumper case!? O_o

    • Mchl496

They cut down on material and increased their cost.

    • patrik69

It’s actually one of the highest quality bumper cases I’ve ever seen. The fit and finish including the vol. and power buttons is second to none. And I normally bitch about case prices and usually get mine from Aliexpress.com for a buck or two apiece.

      • capecodcarl

So how is it superior to the inevitable $2 TPU or gel cases that will come out for this phone with free shipping? $26 for a 5 cent plastic ring is beyond price gouging.

        • patrik69

Oh Carl don’t get your panties in a wad. If you haven’t had the chance to see one in person then you might want to check one out. I’m not going to argue with you. You seem like you’ve already made your mind up.

    • michael arazan

You’d think by now, Manufacturers would design the device to not require a case or bumper for a phone or have a built in design protection that still shows the design of the phone with protection instead of covering that design up with a case.

      • Totally agree. I keep thinking this while I admittedly look for a bumper case. Would it be that hard to build in a mm or two of rubber around the edges of a phone?

  • Dillon Brown

It makes the phone look like it has the sides of the gnex

  • Pedro

I would LOVE to see some type of follow up with Skinomi/Zaggshield applications.

Maybe an entire “Protect the Nexus 4” thread…

  • 1:16= Thats what she said.

  • Geo

kellen what are you gonna do with the broken glass nexus 4?

    • I’m sure he gets tired of seeing these idiotic comments… He’ll do whatever the hell he wants with it. The last thing he’ll do is give it to someone. It’s broken, let it be broken. If you want one, buy one like the rest of us. Period.

      • Mode3

        U mad Bro?

        • What’s there to be mad about? I’ve got my N4. I just think it’s ridiculous to ask a question like that. As a matter of fact, that question has been asked quite a bit and Kellen has ignore every inquiry. It’s a stupid question.

          • I have a question for you. Why do you have two disqus accounts? Or are you identical twins only separated by a middle name? Just curious.

          • Depends on how I’m connected I guess. One may be linked to Twitter, the other to Google+ or Facebook.

      • Good thing you’re here to help or else he wouldn’t know what to do with himself!

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

        ..shut up

    • He got a replacement…

      • Geo

sorry if I rustled some people here

        • Didn’t bother me but some people have something up their rear end.

        • I was just in a bad mood, didn’t mean to “flip out.” Sorry, lol.

  • zoobey

I just received mine today. It is a great looking bumper. The on/off and rocker switch work perfectly and feel like they are part of the phone itself. I am still getting used to the feel. IMO it does make the phone feel a little bulky and the plastic is slippery. The plastic has a very different feel to it. Kind of rubbery, but slippery. You’ll have to feel for yourself I can;t explain it. IMO it’s worth $20, but add in the tax and shipping and you start to lose that warm and fuzzy feeling.

    • brkshr

Agree with everything said here. I’m not big on the bulky feeling myself. I’ll probably only use it selectively. For now, it’s on there until my XO Skins back protector comes.
