Download: Nexus 7 Android 4.2.1 Update JOP40D

The Android 4.2.1 update that started rolling out to the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 has also started popping up on Nexus 7 devices. If you want to manually download, you can grab the file directly from Google, below. To flash, install via custom recovery, use “adb sideload <filename>” from stock recovery, or try the Google Services Framework trick.

Cheers Drew!

Yesterday I updated my Nexus 7, but now,the touch screen is not responding! I’ve tried to restart the tablet, it restarts ,however the touch screen still doesnt respond! Any guess?? Its really a shame… i got this tablet two weeks ago…

Did you flash the update manually? It may just be a bad download. Try redownloading and use WugFresh Root Toolkit to reflash the update. That may work.

    • Thunder

Same here, i updated and touchscreen not working at all, I re-flashed using WugFresh Root Toolkit several times but nothing, any suggestion

  • Spider210

service framework trick 9 times and it made the update install… 1.1mb update?

    • snowblind64

It’s just a bug fix. Only change I see is the month of December is back in the People app.

  • snowblind64

    WARNING: Please read!!!

I tried the framework trick for the first time and it pulled the update but now my Nexus 7 has disappeared from the desktop version of the Google Play Store (and yet my Bionic that I sold a year ago is still in the device list!). I’ve tried manually syncing my account and downloading an app in the Play Store on the Nexus 7 but it still isn’t showing up. Hopefully it will reappear soon.

    • Mr ilheis

Just use J Rummys Rom Tollbox to make backups of your build.prop and other modified system files and restore them before you flash an OTA. PROFIT!

  • JSiNeM

I just received my new N7 yesterday, and I have had 3 OTA’s within 24 hours! Wish it could be like this everyday!

  • Woops.. if this was news I would have reported it. Hadn’t updated in a while but I got this Friday I think through OTA. Still rootable with ease.

  • Just got my update… Awesome.

  • Butters619

Plan on getting the Nexus 7 for my gf. Does anybody know if another store besides WalMart has a holiday return policy. I looked at Radio Shack, Staples, and Office Depot but couldn’t find it and I really don’t want to shop at WalMart

    • Jonathan

Got my 7 art office Depot
They only had a14 day return policy….sucks

    • Check Gamestop, thats where i got mine.

    • staples has a holiday return policy til like jan 12th

      • Butters619

Good call. Got it from Staples last week. Thought I’d let you know.

  • connor

I got the OTA 4.2.1 update on my N7, and strangely enough Currents is no longer in my app drawer. Did anyone else experience this?

    • slider112

No, Currents is still there for me…

    • Stewie

You would be lucky then, it’s a current hog (couldn’t resist the pun … yeah, i said it … )

    • Newhce

Now that you mention it…I don’t see it either.

  • romMan

when will the galaxy nexus see some decent roms for 4.2???

    • Searchisyourfriend

Obviously you haven’t been looking around, they are there. One word: mmuzzy.

      • itznfb

    • Crack Monkey

The Verizon GNex still doesn’t have a decent dock and you’d like a current release of the OS? ROTFLMAO over and over and over again…..

      • itznfb

        Who the hell uses docks?

  • Alex

CWM prompted me to fix root after flashing this on my nexus 7, working perfectly afterward with root on 4.2.1

    • Mr ilheis

That’s what I love about flashing OTA’s via CWM. I just hit fix flash and fix root. Viola!

  • EC8CH

Kinda unrelated but after the last update Gmail on my N7 was driving me nuts. Items I deleted on it would still show up in my inbox on other devices. Turns out sync background data was turned off in the data usage menu. Don’t know if the last update toggled that setting, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t do it.

  • ToddAwesome

    how soon till 4.2.2?

  • Verbal_Judo 2

Anyone know if this little update breaks root?

    • Guest

You realize that this is a NEXUS 7, which is incredibly easy to root? 😛

      • JoshGroff

This is America, it should be pre rooted, even if only to save us the minute doing so. 😉

      • Raven

Not without unlocking which wipes all the data. Supposedly you can do an adb backup first, but I have yet to have enough free time to try that.
I miss the good old days of one touch roots on my supposedly locked Motorola Droid 2, Droid 4, and ASUS Transformer.

    • Raven

      Use Voodoo OTA Root Keeper.

    • Mr ilheis

If you lash the OTA via CWM it will ask if you want to fix recovery and root before you reboot the system. Otherwise use Voodoo OTA Keeper as suggested.

    • GrandBub

I used OTA Root Keeper. But out of an abundance of caution, I used the “temp unroot” function before I took the OTA, then rooted it back with Root Keeper.

  • Mack

Ehh I’m lazy. Haha I’ll probably wait for the OTA and just re-root.

    • itznfb

I was running a stock rooted 4.2 with CWM and accepted the OTA. When it rebooted into recovery it failed but gave me the option to install the untrusted zip. I did so. It worked. Then CWM asked me if I wanted to suppress the stock recovery. I did. Then it asked me if I wanted to fix root. I did. I was happy. I love CWM.

      • art

Went through the same exact thing… was worried I would lose root, but CWM to the rescue!

  • Bionic_Pags

I assume this will fix the lag issue?

    • chris125

it has been reported many times to try the google currents trick. I have no lag on my nexus 7 and never had any after updating

      • Bionic_Pags

I’m aware of the trick…I’m one of the few that actually uses currents… i had lag after the update and it shouldn’t take a “trick” to fix it. So i would think that this would take care of the issue that some have had

    • Raven

I have not experienced any lag myself, but some people have reported great success with the “Forever Gone” trick.
Google “nexus 7 trim forever gone”

      • XvierX

I didn’t experience any lag with 4.2 but I just got 4.2.1 OTA and my N7 is lagging like crazy. What’s this trick you speak of? Sounds like I should disable Google currents.???

    • Newhce

It has with mine! Well, the Google search box still lags but I think that is because of swift key.

  • Daniel Clifford

Awesome! My replacement comes in today as well!
