ADW Launcher Returns From the Dead, Revamps “Almost Everything”

Remember ADW Launcher? It’s back! According to the “What’s New” section in its app listing, everything has been redone. If you check out the video, you’ll see a lot of Holo theme, along with settings and features that match up to today’s hottest launcher, like Nova and Apex. I have to admit that I had forgotten about this launcher, but now that it’s back, I’m ready to give it another shot.

I just downloaded the new ADW launcher for the nexus 7. This launcher is insane, I don’t know what to do with all my options! I am a big Nova launcher user but this new set up may be making me switch over.

  • Sqube

It looks really good. I’m just not sure why I should want to use it over Nova or Apex or any of the other launchers that have shown up (and been updated) since ICS showed up.

  • Derek

    I’ll try it out.

  • Best tech news of the week for me personally. I just updated my GS3 to JB with Sprint and Nova Prime seems to struggle badly. It can’t add more than a single widget before force closing to add another widget, and the laginess is unbelievable. Hopefully ADW brings the smooth quickness I used to love about the launcher.

  • Guest

No auto-folder creation by drag-drop icon on another! Boo! Show stopper for me. Sticking with Nova! Played with ADW a little, but other than lack of above, didn’t see any reason to switch from Nova.

  • Dont know about you guys but I dont see anything cool about nova or apex launcher, I prefer adw over them any day.

  • Anoneyemou5e

Good thing I saved a copy of the old version. Mainly because my favorite themes don’t work anymore!

  • Kirk Lei

surprised GO EX launcher was not mentioned here considering is one of the most popular ones on Play.

  • cheezeboy

On my Charge (yes, feel sorry for me), I’m really digging the update. Things are moving very smooth. Gotta play around with it some more today; but so far, so good. For years I was Go, then got annoyed with all the ‘Go’ stuff.. Tried Halo but that really lagged for me.

and the Launcher Pro comments begin…

  • Master O’Disaster

I’ve been running ADW-EX v1.3.3.7 (on my stock ICS Samsung GS3) since last night when I found out that it was updated. Here’s my initial impressions:

    1) The transition graphics are smoother than any other launcher I have used so far (Nova Prime and Go), I don’t usually make this sort of comment, since I get irritated by the overused “Fastest ROM yet” yadayadayada ramblings. Try it and see for yourself. The GS3 GPU hardware may be helping out on this, so YRMV.
    2) Screen touch responsiveness is definitely better than Go Launcher – No missed screen presses yet (Will Go ever fix this problem?). Screen edge touch response as good and may even be better than Nova Prime.
    3) ADW-EX v1.3.3.7 does not seem to play well with ADW Notifications yet.
    4) NOTE: To edit a Desktop Icon/Widget title or get the icon menu, you need to double-tap the icon. This is a change from how ADW (and, most other launchers) have worked in the past.
    5) Aside from crashes when adjusting ADW Notifications, ADW-EX has been very stable for me.

In summary, ADW-EX is my preferred launcher once again. I missed it. 😀

I’m currently still on GB so I’ve been rocking ADW for several years now and I still love it. This update was fantastic. Bringing a little bit of a modern feel to my oldschool CM7!

  • Bionic

    To little too late.

  • dean2359

Keeps force closing on my S3. Too bad ,I was anxious to give this a try. Using Go now

  • I just don’t see the need for launcher apps anymore, not with ICS and JB.

    • David Bice

If you flash roms often, they can be a big time saver. I use Nova and all your screens and widgets are backed up with titanium. If you are using the stock launcher, you have to set up everything from scratch after a full wipe.

  • KleenDroid

I bought ADW EX back in the day and liked it then. I am willing to give it a try again but it will be difficult to top Apex. 🙂

  • drt054

I never left ADW EX with ICS Theme… But it is even better now!!!!!

  • C-Law

I bought this long ago when Google was having a 10 cent sale. I just reinstalled to try this new version and it is insanely customizable! It is running silky smooth on my n7 too. Still not sure if I’d use it over nova bc I like the stock look but if u want more customization and tons of animation choices, check it out! I did notice that there aren’t any widgets in the drawer and I can’t adjust wallpaper scrolling to only scroll on static wallpapers and not live, scrolling is either on or off. Definitely worth checking out though

  • jsf6262

I’ve been using ADW even after getting ICS. Nova launcher only lets me have 7 rows on the homescreen. Apex and Holo launchers let me have 10, but they blow up the icons and make them look stupid. Apex even blows them up so large they don’t fit in the grid and the images get cut off. ADW is great.

  • master94

This was my first launcher. Good times

  • Hmm, just hmm.

  • Looks like a sweet update, but I’ve moved on to Nova and don’t think I will ever go back to anything else. Stock feel with gesture controls and other customization options that work great.

But it does look like a good option for those poor souls who are still stuck on GB, though Holo Launcher is great too…makes my old D2 fly.

    • Captain_Doug

I use 5. One for games, 1 for productive stuff, a main page for often used apps, another page for media, and the last page was a twitter feed but I haven’t found a good 4×5 replacement widget.

    • If i didn’t have widgets id probably only need one. Love my widgets.

    • enigmaco

I don’t use many screens myself, phone runs slow enough as it is. That is why I like nova launcher helped speed things up.

    • Buy This

I do too. Keep it super minimal. Only widget /item on the screen is storage ether and everything else I need uses novas gestures. Too late for adw it was great for a while tho.

    • Scott H

I too picky – I want my ‘main’ home screen clean (same with my PC desktop). Minimalist clock and nothing else but the Apex Dock.

  • Captain_Doug

This really was such a great smooth launcher with a huge amount of customization. Glad to see it resurrected. I’ll definitely give it a chance. Nova’s been pretty nice to me, Apex was just a little too buggy. I’m looking forward to ChrisMLacy’s(creator of tweet lanes) new launcher too. Good stuff happening.

  • enigmaco

Nova does it for me its the bees knees lol

    • 3M4NU31

Well that makes Apex the cat’s pajamas

  • droidftw

I remember when the only way to install ADW was to flash an update.zip through recovery. The good ole days 🙂

  • Music…

  • Oaxican509

    Sigh…… LauncherPro…..

  • Can you do a poll for Apex, Nova, and ADW? I’d like to see what the community thinks

    • Daniel Maginnis

am i the only one that preferred go launcher? haha

      • Oh yea, i tried that one and liked it a lot my self. but it was also really slow.

      • KB26

        You’re not alone. xD

        • michael arazan

All the launchers still slow down my phone the longer i use it, from my D1 to my Gnex. It starts lagging after hours of using it and gets slowly worse. And I’ve tried the top 3, the free ones.

          • KleenDroid

In Apex go into the homescreen menu and then the minimum scrolling time and change it to 5.

Then go into the drawer settings and also change the minimum scrolling time to 5.

If you do this it will just fly all the time. If you want to make it even quicker shut off drawer flying in and out animations. Animations just mean slow.

I like fast and if you make these changes I think you will really like it.

          • michael arazan

        • Travis Keany

I just recently made the change from Apex to Holo HD and will not be looking back anytime soon. Much lighter and faster.

    • Booyah

    • Buckoman

Let’s let everyone use the new ADW for a little bit before upping a poll, no?

      • NO NOW!
Lol, i didn’t meant immediately, just that they should do one.

      • abqnm

I don’t think it is needed. I had to uninstall after a few minutes as all the new ADW did was LAG. Everything was laggy. Transitions felt like I was trying to run JellyBean on my OG Droid. Went back to Nova and all is happy again. Even Apex (which is a bit laggy) is 100x better than this new version. Will try it again once it gets a few updates.

        • Buckoman

          Ouch, really? What device?

          • abqnm

Galaxy Nexus. Even overclocked it didn’t matter.

          • mjmedstarved

Came here for this comment; thanks!

            Nova FTW..

          • Mason Lammers

Do you know how to get widgets working in your app drawer without rooting your phone? My wife complains about this and she won’t let me root her phone. – Nova Launcher

          • Buckoman

That’s odd. Runs like butter on my X2 and GS3.

Something was weird about smoothness when I had the Nexus. Things that were always snappy on other phones were just…not.

          • abqnm

TI OMAP processors have always been plagued with this symptom on Android in my experience. On the Nexus it seems that Nova was optimized for it and it works flawlessly. Apex would be about 90% as smooth as Nova and ADW, at least in its currentform, would be about a 30%. It really is that bad on the Galaxy Nexus. Maybe the developer will get it sorted out soon. Some of the new features look appealing.

          • Weird — had been using Nova on my rooted tbolt (Nova comes default with the liquid ICS ROM I’m running) and the newest ADW EX is now my default, preferred launcher. Smooth as anything I’ve used lately on my thunderbolt. And man, I feel like a dinosaur still using this tbolt!

ADW EX will help me keep it on life support until I decide if I want to take it on the chin buy a phone for full retail (note 2?) to keep unlimited data on VZ or take it on the chin from a network perspective and go to tmobile or sprint.

Really stinks that the N4 and that awesome 360-panorama camera isn’t coming to VZ.

          • abqnm

I really think it is the choice of processor. TI OMAP processors on Android have always, in my experience, not been nearly as smooth as other offerings with some applications.

As for the N4, I won’t miss it that much considering it has way too little internal storage. The photo-sphere will likely come to the Galaxy Nexus at some point. Also when it is released to AOSP, I am sure it will find its way into other JB custom ROMs as well, so at least some of the phones on VZW will get it. There are also apps that do the same thing already though.

    • EC8CH

      Helix Launcher…. I’m old school

    • Butters619

I got Nova Prime for 99 cents on sale and I love it.

  • mgamerz

How did they get a video? Is it a render…? Gnex doesn’t support video of screen like it seems..

    • Well for one looks like they were using a usb mouse. Maybe they just filmed the screen?

      • abqnm

It looks like they were using the show pointer location option. A USB (or bluetooth) mouse has an actual pointer, not the dot. It looks more like they used video out of some sort and recorded it and then edited it onto a GNex image.

  • mr_taxi

I see what they did there.

  • The video is still looking dull. Anyone else felt that they are looking at a ’90s video?

  • TheFirstUniverseKing

Nice to see that Anderweb didn’t just give up when ICS was released like I thought. I’ll give this new update a shot.

  • antinorm

    It’s at version now. l33t.

  • SecurityNick

Was my favorite, but haven’t used it in a long time since 4.0 came out with the galaxy nexus. It’s still installed so I’ll have to update & try it out.

  • Jonathan Bunch

Where is that extremely overdue launcher pro rewrite?

    • ha

    • 3M4NU31

      I’m STILL waiting!

      • Mike Gall

I hear ya…waited so long so I moved on to Nova.

        • Same here I just couldn’t wait any longer. After that I won’t purchase another app from that developer since they don’t keep things moving forward.

    • Thats been my question for the last two years…

    • Don’t think it’s ever going to happen. Guy abandoned it a long time ago.

    • KleenDroid

We are all turning blue from holding our breath.

    • That was the first paid app I ever purchased. I am disappoint.

  • Garrettjrussell

    Oh yes.

  • 3M4NU31

Now i’m just waiting for Launcher Pro + to come back from the dead! Tis’ the season after all.

  • Sorry ADW, I’m a Nova launcher user now…gonna take a lot more than playing catch up to get me back…

  • I agree, after Nova I completely forgot about ADW. However, I think I’ll wait for other users to chime in and convince me to go back and try ADW again because Nova does everything I need at the moment.

    • polioman

Just bought it and it’s pretty great. It adds tons of features and absolutely screams. I haven’t used Nova or Apex for a while, but if I’m remembering correctly, this is on par with them feature-wise and perhaps beyond them in terms of speed. I recommend you try it and refund if you don’t like it.

      • abqnm

I found that on my GNex on JB that ADW was lagging beyond belief. I used Nova when it first came out but switched to Apex and used it daily for most of the year. I just recently tried Nova again and realized that the little bit of lag I got in Apex was completely non-existent in Nova. Nova +1000

        • DigitalDK

You must be holding it wrong. All I get is jelly butter baby!

    • Rotkaeqpchen

For users who still have to use 2.3.4 like me on my beloved Droid 3, ADW Launcher is great, but Holo Launcher (for me) is even better 🙂 Finally I can use something else then Go Launcher…

      • Holo Launcher is very lightweight and smooth. Makes my old D2 fly, even though I only use it as a backup alarm clock and as a streaming music player connected to my Yamaha desktop radio.

    • Cowboydroid

I tried it for a bit…despite the improvements, it still feels like the old ADW. Just not nearly as clean as Apex or Nova.

I’m waiting patiently for Action Launcher to debut…

  • They kept the name for good reason. ADW was awesome a couple years ago.

  • Emilio Fahr

    Awesome! I’ll give it a go 🙂
