Rumors: Samsung Creating Super High-Res Nexus 10-Inch Tablet, $99 Nexus Tablet Coming Too

According to a report out of CNET, Samsung and Google have teamed up to create a 10.1″ Nexus tablet. The device will sport a super high-resolution display of 2560×1600, which equals 299 ppi (pixels per inch). For those keeping track, that’s a higher pixel density than the new iPad, which sits at 254 ppi. This will be a high-end tablet, according to their source Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch. Shim says that “supply chain indications” have helped him draw this conclusion. I hate to say it, but DigiTimes lists “supply chain sources” on a daily basis and we balk at them all of the time. Let’s hope this guy is legit.

Shim also mentioned that Google will start manufacturing a $99 tablet in December.

Funny, we tossed out Samsung and the Nexus 10 earlier this morning. Quite the coincidence.

I see no reason for a tablet to be above 1920×1200. There is very little content created at higher resolutions (pretty much only photos) and that means most of the stuff you look at is going to have to be scaled up to fit the display resolution and thus will look worse then a lower res (1080p) display that can display the content natively. Additionally your 3D performance is going to suffer on mobile GPUs with all those extra pixels.

  • King of Nynex

Although I can see why people would want a Nexus 10, for me, 7″ is the sweet spot between space and portability.

  • J. Gilbertson

Samsung’s Quality Assurance > Asus Build Quality. Build quality does you no good if you toss in cheap hardware into a pretty box. Just hope Samsung can ditch the cheap feeling plastic though.

  • theentropic

If this indeed hits the market, I will be selling my Transformer Inifinity (or giving it to my wife) and buying one of these.

So this weekend I got to play with a yet-to-be-announced Nexus tablet by Samsung. It was about 10″, had stereo speakers on the sides of the screen and was codenamed Manta. It was also running JellyBeanMR1 – like the LG Nexus floating around. There were no ‘hardware’ pages in Settings, About so it was hard to see what the hardware was, but it was gorgeous and fast. The screen looked gorgeous, but I don’t remember it being as high-rez as the New iPad, but it could have been.

But I can confirm that Manta is a Samsung Nexus tablet at about 10″

    • DarkRain

Does it come with phone capabilities also like all other samsung tablets?

  • htowngtr

Will probably be in the neighborhood of $500.

  • Sven Enterlein

All these specs are great and I am very tempted to buy into another Android tablet. However, the biggest downside for me is still the lack of even most basic apps like a decent handwriting note app and office suite. Without these I don’t see myself spending money on a new tab (better put: I cannot justify the expense). If anyone has suggestions for apps though I’m listening!

    • Raven

I like Polaris Office the most on my Asus Transformer and use Quickoffice Pro HD on my Nexus 7. I also recently got OfficeSuite Pro but I haven’t really used it much yet. Personally, I have no interest in handwriting apps but I have seen SuperNote recommended. Also, I hear Skitch + Evernote is a good combination.

      • Sven Enterlein

I have downloaded virtually every big office app on Android and tested it. They all lack in key functionality, especially the presentation apps. I have also tried almost 10 different note taking apps and I agree, Evernote is great, but even with Skitch it’s not what I’m looking for. My coworker is using Notability on his iPad and it looks like a sophisticated app. Something like that would be great. Problem with all handwriting apps so far is that they have only the one sheet to write on and no multi-windowed options for writing/document overview etc. Look at Notability and you will see what I mean. http://www.gingerlabs.com/cont/notability.php

I hate to be the one to say this but…. I bought a Galaxy Note 10.1 and seriously, it’s perfect for school and work. Especially with the new update that cleans Snote up a bit. I’ve seen the early release stuff for the JB update too, that’s going to make the note even better for those two enviroments… and it has the note taking while being able to review a document side by side. I use it for that purpose all the time.

pretty sure a $99 nexus will be a piece of poo… unless it’s debunking the nexus 7 as the… how do i put this… “main” flagship tablet(?) and putting out a 10″-er for the $200-300 price range…

  • Chuck Finley

“This will be a high-end tablet, according to their source Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch.”
They’re talking about a high-end Nexus 10.1″ tablet, I’m very interested in seeing the pricing through the Play Store…

  • PhoenixPath

Can’t wait to see the costs on this thing. If the N7 is truly going to be coming out with a 32GB version, I can only hope the 10″ version launches with it….

    *crosses fingers*

  • user311

Would trade in my transformer infinity for this IF it has an Sd card slot.

  • Rawheat

    Hell to the yeah!

  • JoshGroff

Remembers said $99 rumor being put to rest earlier…

  • Southrncomfortjm

If the Nexus 10 has an available keyboard dock like the Transformer tablets, then I’m sold on Day 1 since I’m looking for a tablet to replace my laptop. If not, then I’ll have to see what Asus’ next tablet/dock combo looks like in terms of price and specs.

    • JoshGroff

I sadly couldn’t replace my laptop as I have it in place of a Desktop. 17″ Toshiba, I love it to death.

    • bitpimpin

bluetooth keyboard plus folio case bro

  • First Prime

Sounds very interesting, lets hope it’s all true.

  • http://www.facebook.com/DigitalB.tch Jay Crossingham

For $99 (£62) it will be no where near as good as an iPad. Anyone who thinks otherwise, is being a little naive. These things will be great to give to the kids to mess around with, but nothing more.

    • JoshGroff

There are two separate rumors, a 10″ tablet, and $99 (probably 7″) tablet. The budget one obviously won’t be to compete with the iPad.

  • Jeff “Big Red”

Oh hell I’m on board for this one!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/kevinesser90 Kevin Esser

    I’m in

  • http://twitter.com/scrwdgeneration Cliff Keene

Will this have an external memory card slot??? Cloud is great but games are memory hogs.

  • DainLaguna

this could really be something. i always figured it would happen given the ‘n7′ designation. (if it was the only google tablet planned, why the number on the name?) a display that puts the ipad to shame(which is an exaggeration, the ipads display is quite nice), direct updates from google and googles newest pushes for developers to put out better tablet apps sounds like a win.

price? as long as its only as expensive as the ipad i think it’ll be fine. google (and nexus devices) need to be priced as premium or semi premium products at good prices. i say for that display, 499 is reasonable.

if they threw in 32 gigs of space, it would be epic

  • mikeyv

do u think the rumors of the 32gb nexus will still come to light even with this 10 inch rumored now?

  • Michael_NM

I’d like to see that supply chain end at my front door.

  • Bionic

    I want a nexus 42 inch

    • fixxmyhead

      galaxy nexus+ hdmi cable+ 42in tv= problem solved

      • Buy This

Does the Galaxy Nexus have a micro hdmi port I am not aware of?

        • fixxmyhead

with an adapter thingy damn it . idk if ur trolling or being serious

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=75200646 Stephen Cox

Yeah, it supports the MHL adapter.

  • Bionic

Even with all these rumors. I’m perfectly happy with my nexus 7 16GB. I simply have no need for a bigger screen or more storage.

  • JaredCarlson

My nexus 7 will be sold as soon as the high end 10″ nexus is announced. Maybe ill finally get my google designed note taking app :D. (scratchpad ported to the play store as the official app would be ideal.)

  • http://www.getintonursing.com/ Jon

$99? I just don’t believe it. It would have to be utter crap to come in at that price or be like 5 inches.

  • Buy This

Shame to say that Shim sounds like a sham.

  • nightscout13

I’d LOVE a 10 inch nexus! Imagine the posibilities!!!!!

  • bose301s

Hopefully this is true, 10″ > 7″ for tablets to me.

    • Michael_NM

Mathematically speaking, that’s true for everyone.

      • DainLaguna

only because the ipad is closer to ten than 7 ;)

        • michael arazan

          ^ this guy, pff

        • TD

Yeah, until they come out with the mini.

        • JetmanFL410

OMG did you really just say that?pff

          • DainLaguna

            omg i SO did.

        • justincase_2008

Or cause 10 > 7 Did you pass middle school math?

          • DainLaguna

did you pass context 101? his > symbol was shortened way of saying ‘better for me.’ not literal greater than.

          • justincase_2008

I’m pretty sure > has always meant greater then. That is why he said “to me” at the end. As in a 10 inch is greater the 7 inch to him. Not just in size but in use.

  • Teng Taing

ill buy just to support Google and Android

    • DainLaguna

had a friend who did this for the n7 when it came out. and he uses his ipad more. :/

      • El Big CHRIS

same reason I skipped the n7 and just bought a ipad2 on CL. It’s not because the n7 isn’t great, it’s because a lot of apps that are made for tablets are only available for the ipad. Don’t ask which ones, but i can attest to the stuff i use it for apple has secured them apps for themselves. Devs still don’t see android tablets as profitable, hopefully that’ll change and I will sell the ipad and buy and android tablet in a heartbeat.

        • DainLaguna

i wonder if apple pays devs handsomely…i know plenty of folks who pirate expensive games on their jailbroken ipad 2 and 3’s…and these are hardcore ifans. piracy must be THAT much more awful on android. a part of me is hoping that with the nexus announcements this month, google will discuss a new incentive they have given to devs to make popular apps with native tablet versions for the n7 AND the n10.

      • DainLaguna

lol why did this get downvoted? i dont agree with him either. i guess you all had no other way of saying ‘wow thats stupid’

  • sergio

I don’t understand one thing. Companies can build bad ass tablets or phones with the latest technology available at the time. Then why don’t they??!!! Not sufficient funds? Well, if they build this super phones or tablets, I’m pretty sure they’ll get their money back and then some. Maybe I’m missing something. Anyone?

    • GQGK

It’s a combo of what people want and what they are willing to pay. The Nexus 7 has shown that most standard consumers don’t want a large tablet and are happy with a smaller screen. Hardcore users are the ones that want the fancy specs and bigger screen. I myself passed up the N7 in hope of something bigger. Just keep in mind what you want and are willing to pay doesn’t represent the majority if you are a power user as I am.

  • sciwizam

The “Manta” Antutu benchmark had a 1.7Ghz clock speed. Guess what one of the rumored clock speed of the Exynos 5250 is, Cortex A15 @1.7Ghz. And the Exynos 5250 was rumored to power a 2560×1600 display.

    • Anonymous

This is precisely what I got to play with last weekend for a few minutes. A 10″ Nexus tablet made by Samsung. I posted about it above.

  • thislandisyourland

Please Jesus let these be right this time.

  • http://profiles.google.com/butcherchop Beto Aguirre

My Asus Nexus 7 is the biz! I love it, not sure if I’d buy a big 10″ tablet, but never say never, I guess.

    • JoshGroff

Having owned both the Xoom and Touchpad, I must say that 7″ is better. Sure you have a smaller screen, but at least you can hold it in one hand.

      • http://asten77.myopenid.com/ Glitch

        aren’t those both 10ish?

        • JoshGroff

Yes, but I’m saying in my experience they were too big, and that the N7 is a bit more convenient, I kind of phrased it wrong though.

      • JetmanFL410

Did you use to hold your laptop or desktop with one hand?

        • JoshGroff

No, but tablets are supposed to be portable and convenient at 10″+ a laptop/netbook is more efficient.

  • johnc7995

I would prefer a 10-inch Nexus tablet from Asus instead.

  • http://twitter.com/Footba11Joe Joey Malcomb

Any ideas on pricing on the Nexus 10? I don’t see myself paying over $400 for a tablet…

    • Bionic

      I’d say $350 for a 16GB version.

  • Q’s

been waitng for a google tablet to compete with the ipad

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1304767408 Steven Lam

if you still feel that way with whats already on the market right now, maybe you should just get an ipad and quit this denial that you want an ipad

      • Q’s

Who are you? And whose to say I don’t already own an ipad? which I do. But thanks for your interest in my life.

Oh and I love my Nexus 7 too by the way, which is why I want a Google experience in the size of an ipad. Thanks for being an ass tho. Your mother must be proud.

    • JoshGroff

      Transformer Infinity?

  • http://twitter.com/erikbond Erik Bond

99 dollar Nexus tablet? I’m in, screw my Xoom.

    • David Henry

Pretty sure the $99 tablet will not the 10.1″ so don’t toss the Xoom yet

The $99 tablet was more of an ‘also’ at the end

    • http://profiles.google.com/karbonkopy9 Timothy Reider

Gotta give the XOOM credit. It’s gotten all of the major Android upgrades and still runs like a champ. I love my Wifi XOOM! That being said I’d love a lighter more powerful version at some point, and with 7″ being a bit too small for me…10.1″ is perfect.

      • Lactose_the_Intolerant

Right there with you… picked it up on launch, it’s almost 2 years old. 7 inch screen hampers my productivity (word, excel & powerpoint files). Bring on the N10 !

This + Google’s new Tablet apps guild-lines = iPad Killer
