This Week in the Life of DROID: 9/21/2012

What a week it has been. Naturally, many of this week’s tech/mobile news circled around the launch of Apple’s newest iPhone 5. All hail iPhone 5. Anyways, what we did come out with is LG’s new Optimus G, official Jelly Bean update for Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus, and Motorola/Intel’s new RAZR i.

If you missed any of this week’s awesomeness, here are the highlights:

Have a great weekend!

  • surfboard3r

I have always said that if I was given the option, I would choose the iphone over any android running phones assuming I could run android on the iphone. The hardware of the deivce is light-years beyond everyone else

  • SolipsisticPsychologist

Nice to see that Droid Life’s founder Kleenex, owns or has a review model, of the new iPhone. Can’t spell sellout and hypocrite, any better than that. Now on with the teat-suckling apologists, that are too blind to see the shocking irony and hypocrisy here. Remember to wipe that brown from your nose, before you go out.

    • And if they didn’t spend substantial time with the iPhone you’d bitch about that, too.

  • FreshPrince

I think its funny how most people complain about carrier logos being on a phone but the iphone has stupid FCC brandon and dont throw away b.s stamped all over it…..

    • FreshPrince

  • The new LG Optimus looks amazing. Their OS probably is the best compared to Sense, Blur, and TouchWiz. Again, I’ve only had Blur and Touchwiz for a few days after flashing some AOSP.

  • JulianZHuang

i5 still better than my gn….

  • DanWazz

Show the bottonless/solid front of the Nexus compared to the “same ol’ same ol'” i*hone design, and there s no comparison. Being 10 months old the Galaxy Nexus still looks years ahead of any phone out there

    • Dain Laguna

dude what crack are you smoking? i love my gnex, but our phones are great because of the SOFTWARE. that pic above says it all. iphone may look boring but it feels like a flagship phone. google needs to bring it with the next nexus. the hardware and camera needs to be 100% better than what it is now.

      • rocnrob

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder because the 2 tone is not doing it for me, also I actually handled one and it feel a little “too” lite almost as if it might break. I think the lenth to width ratio is a little off to me, but of course that’s just one opinion I’m sure everybody has there own…….

  • achaff86

Now the question is, when will the gs3 get some JB love… lol

  • EC8CH

    i*hone…. meet my phone.

    G-NEX FO LIFE!!!!!!

  • Rob

Just played with my brother’s new iphone 5, and honestly nothing really amazes me about it. Design is sleek but other than that it’s pretty boring.

  • AlexKCMO

So Tim, how are you liking the iPhone? Are Apple users going to be able to handle all that extra screen space? Is the extra row of icons going to be too much? 🙂

    • I think that iOS users will be really happy. The phone is speedier, has LTE, and you know, has a 4″ display 😛

  • iPhone 5 looks nice from the back but what no one is noticing is that the aluminum on the back WILL scratch bad! I’ve got both a MBP 2011 and a flash drive made for the Mac that is made of the same aluminum and guess what? They both look horrible with scratches and they have never once been abused or dropped!

    • Liderc

Been hearing lots of people say the metal is scratching badly. I saw some people saying it came out of the box severely scratched. Metal-gate otw.

      • And even a case won’t fix it because the snap on cases always scratch when dirt / dust gets caught under it. Bad Apple!

    • john

I have a MBA and it isn’t scratched at all. I’m not sure how you are handling your equipment.

      • I treat it how it should be treated. Like $3000 of overpriced metal! This is my first Mac and unless Apple puts something major in the new ones this will be my last!
Such as today, I put it on my desk on top of an old, plastic HP. After about an hour I got up and went into the bedroom and when I picked up my laptop I noticed a new scratch that went in a zig zag through the top left corner! Its huge and lets just say I wasn’t happy! Its sad when I put a case on the laptop, its so fragile the case scratches the computer but with no case, everything else it touches scratches it! Glad I took out an insurance policy through State Farm just in case lord forbid I drop this thing. If it scratches this easy I would hate to see how many billions of pieces its in after a drop.

        • john

Ok, now i know you are just lying. You need to look into something called hardness. Plastic cannot scratch aluminum. Nice trolling.

          • I’m not lying! Have you ever heard of a thing called dirt and dust? They get on the bottom of the computer and scratch, its the same reason the Spec case I used for a few months scratched and when I looked online there are thousands of angry people from all over complaining about it! Putting a case on this thing scratches it and yet if you don’t have a case everything else in the world scratches it!

  • a.youth.in.Asia

That phone on the left looks awfully like the GooPhone i5… That has a patented design in China

    • michael arazan

      Say it ain’t so Tim

      • It’s a friends. Don’t worry! 🙂

    • john

china doesn’t abide by US patent laws and we sure as hell don’t abide by theirs.

  • jay_peter

That iPhone 5 is stunning. No other hardware manufacturer can come close to the quality of Apple’s phones.

    • a.youth.in.Asia

It’s not how good the product is on the outside, but how good the product is on the inside…

      • jay_peter

        Apple wins there too.

        • a.youth.in.Asia

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ROTFLMFAO! Right…. And blackberry is the richest company in the world….

        • jay_peter_drank_the_cool-aid

That’s why EVERYTHING about iOS6 is playing catch up to features Android has had from 4 months to 3 years ago…way to be excited about old tech…

      • CIFchamp24

someone has an ugly girlfriend…. hahaha jk

  • Droid4LifeDawg

Thanks for the wrap-up, forgot all about that Netflix update…

  • shamu11

i have to admit, the iphone 5 looks much better compared to the nexus…good thing the nexus’s software is 100x better than the iphone’s though! ANDROID FTW!!!

    • Gel

Only thing I dislike about the Nexus is the back but other than that any phone > iPhone 5

      • jay_peter

        You’re a f00l.

      • michael arazan

The only thing that disappointed me about my Gnex was a 5mp camera, coming from an og D1 i wanted something better, but I love taking 1080 hp videos, and the minor bugs for five months weren’t bad didn’t bother me as much as using a 5mp camera.

    • TheRobotCow

The iphone 5 actually performs pretty good, i’m gonna pick one up and keep it along side my galaxy nexus!

      • CIFchamp24

i was thinking of rocking both as well

      • I was going to do that. However, there is no way to use a nano sim with the Verizon Nexus. You can’t use an adapter with a spring loaded card slot.

    • Larizard

Personally, the all-black front of the Nexus is still classier than this. And I agree with Gel below, the back could be a lot better though..

      • EC8CH

Yes, plain black face of the G-Nex is sweet. Especially in the dark when the black from the app drawer fades into the bezel. Looks like you’re holding pure screen in your hand.

    • john

thought the exact same thing. The iphone is basically the exact same as the iphone 4 which came out over two years ago and yet it still looks more modern than the nexus.

    • like Edwin responded I am amazed that some one can make $6867 in 4 weeks on the network. did you see this (Click on menu Home)

    • goo.gl/audUJ

  • joejoe5709

Yeah! Busy week for Kellex, that’s for sure. Have a great weekend buddy!

    • Larizard

Kellex, we need some Nexus rumors, it’s almost October!! If I am to guess, I think the next nexus won’t be on Verizon. Because if it was, Droid-Life could’ve already gotten leaks out by this time (because of their Verizon insider).

OMG!.. just got my verizon iphone 5!… AWESOME!!.. LTE rules..
Also another bit of good news for those with Verizon iphones.. THEY ARE SIM UNLOCKED!!.. and will even work with ATT 3G…

    WOW WOW WOW!!!..

    Thank you Verizon.

    • paul_cus

I think you might be lost.

      • He probably used his new maps app.

        • Hopefully they told hime to drive off into the ocean or that his local burger king is also his local church!

    • Dan Treacy

Why would anyone on Verizon want to use AT&T 3G?

      • nightscout13

        • Guest

naah dude.. I’ll never go to ATT.. it’s just good to know I have options with it…like Tmobile or Straight talk in the future.. plus, I travel abroad.. so I can switch to gsm sims.

      • Guest

naah dude.. I’m not gonna go to that cr appy att company.. but it’s good to know I have options like Tmobile in the US or straight talk.. plus I travel abroad and I can just sim swap to any gsm network.

    • a.youth.in.Asia

Android was enjoying LTE 2 years ago, glad to see apple finally caught up…

      • jorge

yeah cuz having 3.5 hours of battery life on my thunderbolt was a wonderful experience… /s

        • DroidDoesnt_2

          Boom! Lol

        • LionStone

Well Facebooking for 3 hrs straight will do that!

  • ticker47

My vzw galaxy nexus has yet to receive an update, any ideas? It’s stock IMM76K.

    • PuzzleShot

Not all phones get access to the update at one time. The phones are put in batches, and batches are prompted for updates one by one. However, a Verizon executive told me that after ten days you can pull it manually.

      • Fragmentation within fragmentation? /s

        • EC8CH

    • jay_peter

Here’s an idea. How about you get an iPhone, where you’ll actually get your updates on time.

      • You do realize the amount of Nexus owners that actually are trying to get the update is minimal. Most have rooted and romed and left the whole offical OTA thing a long time ago.

        • jay_peter

I find it absurd that that is even necessary.

          • The whole point of a nexus device is hacking it! Yes it makes a good phone even without hacking but its main purpose for was people who love android and want to be able to do with it as they please.

      • Futbolrunner

        But it’s still outdated.

      • EC8CH

        replace j with g

    • EC8CH

Your VZW G-Nex is obviously telling you it is fed up and isn’t accepting the OTA update to spite the evilness of Verizon.
