Tip: Single-handed Zooming With Google Maps 6.12

YouTube Preview Image

Google just published the 6.12 update for Google Maps that includes better syncing of places and directions between PC and phone, but that isn’t all that came with the update. They also introduced a new way to zoom without using two fingers or two hands. It’s called single-handed zooming and is accomplished by tapping once and then holding your finger to the screen on the second tap. Once you have held on the second tap, you can slide your finger up or down to zoom in and out. Neat.

I’m super glad to see them using this feature! I use navigation a lot and for the past many months I was using the onscreen zoom buttons from the labs section while driving, this will be so much easier and therefore safer.

    well thats pretty cool

  • anth

seriously patent this right now Google

  • LionStone

Well before this I just enabled +/- buttons in settings > display…but that’s another cool option with the slide zoom.

Make sure you give Gary Sui, developer of xScope Browser some props for this. I’m not sure whether Google was influenced by his work, but he’s been developing since OG Droid, and pin to zoom was one of his early implementations. Unlike the Apple ecosphere, I’m sure he’s honored such an implementation showed up in maps, though he’s much to modest to take any credit.

Seems like Google is hedging a bit in case they can’t get the pinch-to-zoom invalidated.

So much the better, I say. I always use my device one handed anyways. Only drawback is you can’t pan and zoom at the same time.

  • meowmix

i didnt know but look over a two story mall and the numbers 1 and 2 appear to the right and you can change levels. CRAZY !

thank you for posting this. good to know.

  • Vicious King1914

    Patent this NOW!!!!

  • wickets

nice……anyone know how to delete location history?

    • Daniel Maginnis

I don’t think you can, but it is private tho. (Maps not browser right?)

      • wickets

yes, maps. The feature is rather brilliant, but do you rally want the gf to know you stopped at kfc instead of salad express?

    “Anyways, Droid Life”

    • Sirx

That totally made me wonder when Kel and the boys are gonna come up with the official Droid Life hand sign. Something we can throw up at the homies to let them know we rep that Droid Life :-D

      • Jason Brown

        LOL

    • cizzlen

It always makes me lol when he says that.

    • Larizard

      “We’re Droid Life. Peace.”

  • EC8CH

    Excellent addition!

Only way it could be better is if it would zoom on center of where you tapped.

  • Justin Brunk

    Hmm. Works in Chrome too

    • Daniel Maginnis

Really? Double tap still does normal zoom for me w/ no context to the swipe afterwards

  • joejoe5709

Sweet. I love all the little tweaks that keep making the experience better and better. Thanks Google!

  • bloop

Why did I hear that as “Anyways, thug life..”

  • JDub

Now I can have a beer in one hand and zoom in on bar locations with the other while cruising down the road! Sweet!

  • NorCalGuy

    Patent that apple

“I thought that was cool. anyways..DroidLife.” …..I laughed at this for some reason.

  • jason

do you happen to know if this ws recorded using google glasses? just curious..THANKS!

    • will bartlett

it was. kellex has a pair and won’t share.

  • Caleb

What happened to my Latitude icon?? First they take away the widget, now the icon shortcut??

    • Daniel Maginnis

Good riddance. I always hid the superfluous buttons anyway. I don’t need 4 icons for maps. (Maps, latitude, navigation, local, wasn’t there also places?)

      • Mack

        Places was renamed to local.

    • TechGuy

Yes – really annoying that the shortcut has gone – I use latitude far more often than maps or navigation and the shortcut was really useful. Now I have to launch maps and then select Latitude. Someone has said “Good riddance” but it’s easy to hide a button/shortcut that you don’t use but impossible to use one thats not included now. Maybe they think Navigation should be removed as well?

  • smithers85

Xscope browser had this feature long ago, it’s called “pin zoom.” https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sui.mRelease

  • Stevedub40

Very nice, thanks for the tip!

  • http://twitter.com/kashtrey Trey W

Cool implementation from Google, but isn’t this what xScope was doing like years and years ago. I quite clearly remember xScope (perhaps another browser) adding this feature way back when Android’s Browser didn’t support pinch to zoom and I loved it.

    • jeesung

      yeah, they’ll probably sue.

  • Daniel

I really wish all apps had this, much better than pinch to zoom imo

  • Greg Morgan

    Google: “Suck it Apple!”

  • NorCalGuy

    Patent that apple
