DROID Charge Update to Build FP5 is Rolling Out Now

The FP5 update for the DROID Charge should be available to all owners of the device, right now. As you may recall from our two reports on this update, it’s incredibly minor. In fact, we still aren’t sure what it changes. The changelog for the update is nothing more than a copy and paste job of the FP1 update that was released back in March.

To pull the update, head into Settings>About phone>System updates. The update itself is only 19.3MB in size.

Cheers Matt and Nathan!

The update was supposed to update a few stock apps, remove another, make calls more clear, things like that. The big one was that now Verizon can remotely access your phone in terms of technical support [it states “with the customer’s permission”]. There’s also something about it now having the Wireless Alert System, whatever that is.

All I’ve noticed is that my battery went from lasting 36 hours to 14. ><

I kept getting a notification to update, but I would’ve lost my stock-based ROM if I did… thanks to an XDA user though, the notifications are stopped. =]

How did you do that??? My Charge has been driving me nuts!

  • sfox

Prior to the update I couldn’t sync my phone with Media Player. Just worked for the first time, so I am happy.

No update is available for me yet. But from reading the comments, I guess it doesn’t really matter

  • Droidicus

This is, hands down, the worst phone I have ever purchased. would love to know what this update is actually supposed to do

This is the 2nd worst phone I’ve ever had (1st was a 2nd generation verizon envy). I’m starting to believe the common theme (verizon phones) is the problem.

  • doubletaco

Oh boy another update to ruin my custom ROM phone.

  • Matthew Merrick

never going back to stock, at least not as long as they have that FUGLY brown + orange color scheme. on stock, the entire phone looks like it was done by someone colorblind, in a pigsty.

tweaked 2.2 Gingerbread ROM for me. its the closest you can get to running ICS without running ICS.

How’s the speed with that rom? I’ve been wanting to streamline my charge for awhile, it just seems bloated currently.

      • Matthew Merrick

its pretty fast, though the ROM uses a bit more CPU/RAM than others, so you’l have to use the task manager to close stuff out when it starts to run slower. Or, alternatively, just set Titanium to reboot your phone every night.
and flash an ICS theme (not the transparent one) – trust me, you’ll love it.

No update available for mine either. Says system up to date put plainly shows FP1.

      Still no update for me

  • WalkerNA

Got my update last night. Did notice less lag than I was experiencing in the last few weeks but that seems to always happen after any firmware update on this phone. The real question will be if it stays this responsive for the next several weeks.

As good as the GNex & SGS III look, the lack of support on this phone + Verizon’s hesitance with firmware updates has left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

  • Andrew Han

my charge has been fine and the only complaint I have is the excessive heat from the lte radio especially when I have wifi tethering on. other than that, I wish there were more developers on this…where’s my jelly bean!

  • Sean Connery

Let’s be honest, the Charge isnt that bad, but sure, it could have been a better.

  • DJyoSNOW

Yeah after four charges I finally got a stable version. Its not so bad just under developed.

My wife got prompted to update last night and I forgot to tell her she shouldn’t because her phone was rooted. Well needless to say, she tried to update and then the phone got stuck in an endless Samsung logo reboot loop. She was running stock, but was rooted.

    • Jesse Holt

Okay, I’m stock root as well. Good to know. Guess I’ll be backing up before I let the update run Thanks.

    • chad1031

mine is rooted and also got stuck i just held power button and it came back on but it is still fp1 any fix to get update with rooted phone???

      • Paul

I didn’t have such luck. No matter what I did, it wasn’t going anywhere and wouldn’t start. To fix it, I ended up just re-flashing CWM and then flashed a new ROM, so everything was lost since we never made a backup before trying the update. But oh well… But I think your best bet to get the update would be to find someone who released a ROM with the update included. Originally, I had hoped that the update would go through smoothly and we would just lose root, but it doesn’t work that way with this phone apparently…
