HTC: Thunderbolt Ice Cream Sandwich Update Still Should be Done by End of August

According to HTC’s Facebook page, the Thunderbolt is still on schedule to receive its Ice Cream Sandwich update by the end of August (this month). They told us back in May that we should expect it in either July or August and are sticking to their guns.

Other than the Thunderbolt, the Rhyme should see it as well, unless something has changed since we last heard from HTC. The Incredible 2 is apparently still questionable.

WELL wife just sold htc rhyme and got an iphone cause she was tired of the connection issues and slow lock ups.

Yeah. Although Thunderbolt should be getting ICS it would be a phone of the not so distance past. And something still worth holding onto until you get a upgrade or catch a good bid on ebay for a rezound or razor. ICS update is the only thing keeping the thunderbolt in good standings with owners of them(as myself).

I’m holding HTC to their word. I am the one who asked because I am frustrated waiting for the update.

  • Tyler Chappell

Just for kicks, I was in a Verizon store yesterday and decided to ask a rep if he knew if the ICS update would be out for the Thunderbolt this month. I didn’t expect him to know or even be correct at all, but basically he was like “I wouldn’t count on it..” but in my head I was smiling because I knew he really had no clue. Oh well. Cant wait until it does come out. The TB community on XDA has been pretty stagnant for the past few months, it would be super nice to see this update liven things up again for a few weeks.

Still using my Thunderbolt and in my experience..its a great phone no real battery issues no different from any other smart phn. Anxious to see ICS

    • asdf

great to see this…I had pretty much given up hope

  • Diablo81588

This better not come out before the bionic gets ota ics..

    • Tyler Chappell

it probably will, and why shouldnt it? Afterall, the Thunderbolt came out nearly 6 months before the Bionic. The Bionic was like the most poorly released phone last year. I almost didnt buy my Thunderbolt in April because everyone was saying the Bionic would be out in May. I am glad I didn’t wait.

  • TheDrunkenClam

If they didn’t have to bloat their precious “Sense” all over it, it would have been done by now. This is why I will never again purchase a skinned device. It’s bone stock Google experience for me. The way God, and Google intended it.

  • reyalP

There are still people that own a Thunderbolt? I ditched this turd 3 months after getting it. Thunderbolt and Bionic were some of the worst top tier phones ever!

    • JoshGroff

Owned both, didn’t mind either, still own the T-bolt.

    • Tyler Chappell

Due to battery and reboot issues, it wasnt until I finally put Gingerbread on my TB a year ago that all my problems were gone and I was extremely happy. My first 3 months with the phone = lots of headaches. Now its super solid and I am glad I didnt end up with a Droid Charge, LG Revolution, or Bionic. Once I have ICS on it, that should help me get enough life out of it to last until the next Nexus or early next year.

  • UrDoGG

While the Thunderbolt was a decent phone, I got tired of seeing everyone around me get the Galaxy Nexus and have the latest stock Android OS… So I bought one. I don’t regret my decision.

    • JoshGroff

I use my N7 for stock, have my T-bolt on Thundershed.

      • Tyler Chappell

I’ve been meaning to try Thundershed. Have you tried ThunderStick Full Blown? Ive been too comfy with that to move to Thundershed just yet.

        • JoshGroff

Not yet, but I’ll give it a shot.

  • New_Guy

And with the update comes the RIL…which means custom roms should actually work not long after =D!!!

  • BroRob

So in HTC world that means by October. I gave up on stock when it was taking forever for GB to come out so I’m just hoping they release the ICS update soon so the devs can fix the radio issue.

    • New_Guy

Can’t wait to get a working RIL. ICS ROM may actually work in the near future!

  • 2001400ex

This is crazy, why is every phone behind? Even the razor took forever. I mean, it shouldn’t take 6 months and only a month before the next version is out. At this point, they should skip ics and come out right with jelly bean.

    • New_Guy

Problem with doing that is that JB based on ICS. Remember, the build is 4.1 and ICS is 4.0. Needs to update to ICS first. But, hey, I’m running 2.3.7, so I’m not one to complain about an update =).

      • 2001400ex

Yes, in a technical manner, they have to get to ICS first. But they could release the JB update and skip ICS, in terms of updates.

        • Tyler Chappell

then users would just have to wait even longer. Getting a solid ICS release out first will likely help the JB release go faster anyway IF they decide to upgrade to jelly bean

  • KleenDroid

I know a few people that still have the Thunderbolt and it is a good phone. It will be even better when it gets ICS.

    • New_Guy

The only real problem with the T-Bolt is the battery, but custom ROMs handle it pretty nicely, so not mad at it at all. Very excited about the update. ICS custom ROMs might actually work not long after (maybe even JB (=).

      • Tyler Chappell

Custom ROMs completely fixed my battery life on the TB. I got the 2750mAh battery the same day I got my phone last year, but used the stock battery for the first week before opening the extended. It was pitiful. And even then, the extended used to only get me through a day, now it can easily get me through 2. It would be amazing if the devs are able to release a jelly bean rom for the Thunderbolt due to a stable ICS release.

  • ddevito

And in four months we’ll be running Key Lime Pie

    • mustbepbs

That would be a total mistake for Google to release the “K” iteration. I highly doubt we’ll see any whiff of the next version until mid-late next year.

      • ddevito

And you’re basing this off what exactly….?

They’ve released Android in this timeline:

        1.0 – Sept 08
        1.1 – Feb 09
        1.5 – Apr 09
        1.6 – Sept 09
        2.0 – Oct 09
        2.0.1 – Dec 09
        2.1 – Jan 10
        2.2 – May 10
        2.3 – Dec 10
        3.0 – Feb 11
        4.0 – Oct 11
        4.1 – Jul 12

And you think they’re going to skip a 6+ month iteration because of……?

        • mustbepbs

          Your mom.

        • http://twitter.com/wctaylor79 IICOWII

because aftet GB they publicly stated only one big jump a year. their first idea was 2 a year but realized once a year was better. we all have google phones.. google it and you should find the article

  • http://www.goosio.com/ Adam Siekmann

Update may be done then, then it will take a few months before Verizon says okay.

    • steve0617

Maybe not. The Rezound got ICS on what, the last day it was promised, which was the last day of July, right? So perhaps the TBolt will be the same way. Friday, August 31st. 11:59pm EDT

      • Imitation

Unfortunately the update missed the “June-July” schedule by a few days into August. :P

  • streetlightman

its weird that the Inc2 is still questionable since it has better specs and came out after the thunderbolt..

    • KleenDroid

Just curious as how it has better specs?

      • streetlightman

nvm, i thought it had a dual-core processor. my bad

        • KleenDroid

          :)

        • JoshGroff

Both are the same phone internal wise essentially. Minus the LTE modem of course.

  • http://twitter.com/PackFanJason Jason

Yeah don’t care anymore. Gave up on the TBolt ever getting ICS. Went to a GNex and simply bypassed ICS altogether. JB ftw!

    • New_Guy

Would if I could afford to break the contract…well played sir

    • PaperWeight

Agree and to add- I didn’t know paperweights could receive software upgrades. Sorry T-Bolt owners, you got the shortest end of the shortest stick…

      • JoshGroff

Solid hardware with a nice speaker and kickstand? Works perfectly fine if you go to the dev community for software.

        • Diablo81588

You forgot worst battery life on the market.

          • JoshGroff

On stock… With Thundershed (still on stock battery) I pull around 20 hours with moderate use-2 days with light use.

          • Diablo81588

Impossible. With what, five minutes of screen on time? Screenshot please.

          • Dillan

What does it matter? The truth is that there are people who are happy with the TBolt. I was, but the razr’s hardware was too much for me to turn down for free. If I had to change phones and couldn’t get a razr/razr maxx I would rather have a TBolt than Samsung phones, because I don’t like Samsung’s devices.

          • Dillan

to add on to what I just said, the battery life on my razr is almost on par with that of the thunderbolt.

          • Diablo81588

No.. The bolt has a 1400mah battery and the razr has a 1800mah. How can they have the same battery life?

          • irtechneo

Not impossible. I alternate between Skyraider Zeus and BAMF Forever ROMS on my Tbolt and get better battery life than my wife’s Razr (stock not rooted). I get two days easy on light usage and right about 20 hours with heavy use.

          • JoshGroff

            https://www.dropbox.com/s/h4azof024iyr13v/snap20120721_193516.png

That’s with the stock battery, I don’t use my phone a lot, and when I do, I have the brightness set fairly low.

          • Tyler Chappell

The Verizon GNex had way worse battery life than the TB. I got my TB two weeks after it came out and was lucky to get 6-7hrs on the stock battery.
My dad was lucky to get 3-4 on the Gnex’s stock battery when he got it in January, before i rooted it in May, then got the 3800 Seidio battery a month ago.

    August… 2013.

  • http://level2studios.com/ Jared Sartin

I could use an update… almost ready to jump ship to an SGSIII

    • Murphy

      Thundershed…. your best friend.

      • New_Guy

Sure as hell is. Found this baby about 3 weeks ago and wonder why I didn’t find it before. Best ROM if you won a T-Bolt, and only good version of CM7.2 I know of for it.

      • JoshGroff

This ^ very much so. I love how they put in the Knight Rider theme as a ringtone too. :)

        • Murphy

Wait what?! I usually use one from my SD card

          • JoshGroff

So do I, but I enjoy the Knight Rider theme, and completely forgot it existed until it popped up under ringtones.

      • Cipher Zero

Most definitely. Thunderbolts always got a bad rap because of what Verizon did and didn’t do to them. I only ran mine stock for a couple of weeks because It was my first HTC phone, and I wanted to check out Sense. Once it was rooted, that was one of the first things to go. I’ve been running the latest (July 22nd?) build of TShed, and it gets excellent battery life and runs very smooth without really needing to do any further tweaks.
