New Root Method Found for DROID2 and R2D2, Developers Still Show Love for the Older Devices

Still hanging onto that old DROID2 or R2D2 while waiting for a phone that catches your eye? We’ve got some good news. Since it was updated to Gingerbread, rooting the D2 was a bit of a chore, but now a developer using ideas that gained the D3 root, has an easy way to root Android 2.3.4 on the DROID2. It also works on the R2D2 edition of the device as well, since they run similar builds.

On Windows, all you need to do is have the Motorola drivers and RSD Lite installed along with the file that developer phifc created. There is support for Linux as well for a bit of diversity. If you’re looking to root your phone to get a bit more use out of it, hit the source link below and happy flashing!

Does anyone know how to boot the r2d2 into recovery mode, im trying to install cm9 and i cant seem to launch into recovery mode no matter what button combination i do

  • Really? I sent in a tip about this days ago. Good job DL.

  • Any word on an SBF for the newest OTA on the droid 2. I tryed to flash CM9, failed and attempted to SBF to stock only to accidentally wipe the boot loader seemingly perma bricking my phone. Any ideas on a fix?

  • ScoobySnack

Does this work on the 2.3.4 Droid Pro?

  • Rockingd2

Epic fail, these instructions for the short windows does not work the rootdroid2 file with .7z extention is not recognized by the RSD lite. I give up unless some one else has a way to do it.

    • Morlok8k

a .7z is just like a .zip file, except you need 7zip or winrar or something to extract it…

      • Rockingd2

        THANK YOU!!!!! 🙂 I shall install 7zip! 🙂

  • regkilla

Where’s the love for Droid X?

  • Glad I don’t have that garbage anymore. {{-_-}}

  • SolipsisticPsychologist

I find it quite suspect towards you helping your sponsors like Verizon sell phones. By the fact that you phrase it by saying “still holding on to the phone until something new catches your eye”.

You know it’s very possible that there owners of these two phones who don’t feel the need to upgrade at all, and are just content having a phone that works, or just having the phone at all. Droid Life has the constant trend of over-hyping a new phone, then the very next day or week, knocking it because it’s now too old, and here is the brand, brand new phone that you must buy! That is the mindset of a site who is paid to the bidding of a company like Verizon. There is zero objectivity, and one who is able to see this for what it is, would constantly get the feeling that you’re just not sure what the true motivations of the author are. To each their own, relatively, but I personally don’t feel a need to buy every new phone that comes out, especially not from the habitual pandering that takes place in many articles on this site, which if you really look close, they are nothing more than paid advertisements and promotion. Which is quite sad considering the level of integrity this site used to be known for, before it was turned out for money alone.

    • KleenDroid

As I said before… loosen your girdle and be happy with your R2D2 till they come out with a C3p0.

  • amanda

Will this work on droid 2 global

  • nightscout13

Question is, how many of these phones are still active on Verizon accounts?

    • gorkon

I know of at least one….guy at work has one. He’s about ready to end his contract though.

      • SolipsisticPsychologist

Good for him! Tell him please that I support his stance on showing his disaproval over Verizon’s shady and unethical tactics, with his wallet. I hope to be in his shoes soon as well.

    • KleenDroid

Some of our wives were rockin D2’s after we dumped em on them for bigger and better. Then they got our bigger and better while we got even bigger and better.

      Terrible cycle… 🙂

      • nightscout13

Ya, LOL wish my wife was as submissive… she never took my hand-me-down’s, she wanted her own phones. She didn’t want my OG droid, my droid 2, then my droid X, my Droid Charge, and lastly my G-Nex. And now she made me buy her a Galaxy S3 along with one for me. So every year I end up spending double.

        • Hoff16

How big is your wallet that you buy phones so quickly? Stick with a phone for more than a year!

          • nightscout13

OG Droid and Galaxy S3 were upgrades, the rest were from my friend Craigslist.

          • Nicholassss

I suffer from the same problem. I get bored with phones fast so i craigslist constantly even downgrading sometimes just for a new experience. but I always end up back at my droid and droid 3 because they’re damn near indestructible, I’m pretty sure.

          • KleenDroid

            Phones are fun…

Sticking with a phone too long is not fun…

6 months is starting to push it unless the phone is fully unlockable.

        • LionStone

haha…your wife is no dummy 😉 good for her. Yea, I got mine a D2G for her first smartphone, she’s still using it, on her second one though and it’s getting buggy, so she’s startin to pout…I think that’s my hint she’s ready for a new phone hehe!

    • Neomastermind

The people that strictly commit to staying with their phones for 2 years will just now be looking to upgrade from the D2. Actually all Dinc, Evo, DX, and D2 commits should be looking to upgrade around now. I came from Dinc to the GSM GNex last month after my contract ended.

    • still using my R2D2, but i didnt upgrade to the last update. changed the bootloader so no flashing back.

  • don_xvi

Thank you, Droid Life, for continuing to report on my dear old Droid 2! And to phifc and a few others there on RootzWiki for continuing to develop it!

  • T4rd

Ridiculous that the OG Droid, launched over 2.5 years ago, is still the only phone Moto has shipped with an unencrypted bootloader. Too bad, because I really like their hardware. Dug my OG Droid out the other day just to see how it felt coming from my Gnex and WOW is it so small and cute now, lol. Performance wasn’t actually too bad on stock Froyo.

    • Robin Hu

      I still use one lol

      • Nicholassss

My droid 3 is my daily drive and my OG droid is my back up for when i do something stupid to the 3.

        • Sobr0801

Droid 3 is coming back to life in the Developers department, just sold my fiancés for the bionic.

  • Gimp_Ninja

I ran lots of custom ROMs on my D2 back in the day. Glad to see it’s still getting some love.

  • SomeDooD123

They need a new root method for the Droid X on 621. Current one is too long.

    • Michael_NM

You should come up with something so “they” will be happy.

      • SomeDooD123

Shut your whore mouth. You think if I was in anyway capable of finding a new root method that I wouldn’t try?

    • regkilla

    • Morlok8k

this method apparently works for the Droid X as well… (you just need to grab the right droid X .sbf file)

  • KleenDroid

I bet anyone who purchased an R2D2 still hasn’t gotten lucky.

    • KleenDroid

Looks like there is at least one person here who got one… lol Sorry dude. Even though your livin large as a hard core Star Wars fan I’m sure you must have at least appreciated the humor? Maybe not… If I were walking around with with an R2D2 and have not gotten lucky in almost a year if even then I would be grumpy also… 🙂

      • SolipsisticPsychologist

Actually, the way I see it is, that you yourself are a virgin, and try to cover up that fact to yourself by chastising strangers on the Internet. A content person in this area wouldn’t find the need or the want, to lash out at others for what you view as something making them less than man.

        • KleenDroid

LOL You silly thing you. You still don’t understand what I wrote… I will try to explain it to you and I will type real slow… 🙂 To clear up your confusion I never said anyone was a “virgin”. What I was saying was that if you carried around a phone that looked like R2D2 you probably would not get lucky again if anyone ever saw it. Perhaps it was a poor attempt at humor but I think that most understood it.

But now you are making me cry by pointing out to millions here on Droid Life that I am still a virgin… 🙂 As a Psychologist you should know that it’s this type of humiliation that could throw me over the edge and probably do all sorts of terrible things.

Anyway I hope that you can one day loosen your girdle and enjoy yourself.
