How To: Enable Tegra 3 Graphics on Dead Trigger with Non-Tegra 3 Devices

If you play Madfinger’s Dead Trigger, but don’t own a Tegra 3 powered device, then you’re missing out. NVIDIA teamed up with Madfinger to bring better graphics for Tegra 3 chips, but unfortunately, that leaves some users longing for more in the aesthetics department.

Don’t worry, the Android developer community is here to the rescue. If you own a rooted device, then you can make a simple edit to the game’s files which will allow for the better graphics playback.

Instructions:

  1. First of all, enable graphics details to high in setup/others.
  2. Exit game.
  3. Use root explorer like ES File Explorer.
  4. Go to /data/data/com.madfingergames.deadtrigger/shared_prefs/ folder.
  5. Edit com.madfingergames.deadtrigger.xml file.
  6. Change < int name=”UnityGraphicsQuality” value=”1″ /> to <int name=”UnityGraphicsQuality” value=”2″ / >.
  7. Change < int name=”OptionsGraphicDetail” value=”2″ /> to <int name=”OptionsGraphicDetail” value=”3″ / >.
  8. Save it.
  9. Modify permissions to remove all write permission on User, Group and Other.
  10. Delete com.madfingergames.deadtrigger.xml.bak.

  • Gabriel

in xperia play i can change the graphics to high, is that tegra 3 already?

  • PJMAN2952

I can’t do this on my HTC One S. I go into Data and the only folder I see is for my CM9 launcher. I dont have a folder for dead trigger. Please help!

Reposting: Xoom tablet rooted, ics stock 4.0.4
Will this modification affect future updates on this game?
I tried high graphics on setting and I got the tegra 3 effects but it slows down really awful the game.. so, if I try this new change from the very root of the game , will this make it better ? If not, should I re download it again? I can ru this game kinda smooth using low graphics but I want the whole effects thing being displayed on the game …so, just let me know..
    Thanks ..

  • oskar kings

Hi, will this modification affect future updates? I’m using a Xoom tablet it’s rooted, running stock ics 4.0.4 and when I set the settings on the game to high graphics without being using this tip of course, the game slows down a lot and lags…I wonder if this modification will affect it in a bad way…I already went to the specified folder and its pretty easy to follow this but I’d like to know if this won’t affect the game..thanks a lot in advanced.

  • Robert Farrow Jr.

Works, and plays very smooth on verizons SGS3

  • noisemakr

    I can’t find the path/file specified in step 4.

  • steve lucking

wow..with this enabled it runs perfect with SGS2….this is great? what else can i enable as well?

    • steve lucking

      whoops…no “?” after great…lol !

  • br_hermon

Will this work for shadowgun too?

    • http://twitter.com/Enderman147 nex

for shadowgun you need to use Chainfire 3D. but I think there is another way by hacking the .dex binary.

  • hackthis02

I don’t notice a difference in this and High quailty setting. i dont see the water effects. Granted i have a Tegra 2 device.

  • slide83

WTF, that folder isn’t in the madfinger folder… Anyone else had this problem?

    • Daistaar

The folder is not on your SD card but on the root of your phone / device.

  • http://twitter.com/JGUNZ Ray

Running smooth and with all the effects on GNex with JellyBean 4.1.1

    Thanks for the tip

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rahul-Nirmal/37517471 Rahul Nirmal

    Darn fragmentation! :(
First Tegra 3 exclusive effects, HD Netflix playback only on OMAP devices, etc.

    • drparty

Well, at least with this it isn’t a problem with the hardware but rather nvidia paying off the developer to make their game look better simply to advertise their chips. Pretty lame.

  • Lambo_21

will it run smooth on a TF101… i havent rooted my transformer (yet) but if this looks and runs well i might just do that

  • Knlegend1

Cool cool not doing it though. Great tip!!!

    • Knlegend1

Ha I got thumbed down for ME not doing it to MY game lmao!!!!

  • Adam Stanfield

how is step # 9 completed?

    • hackthis02

      Press and hold the file.

  • adam1982

I’m up to step #9 and I don’t see where to do that? What am I overlooking? Thanks for the help in advance!

    • http://twitter.com/BossAsHell Boss As Hell

Press and hold file, menu pops up, click either permissions or properties(whatever gets the permissions displayed) and uncheck the stuff in the “write” column.

    • Steve Wojciechowski

Just long press on the file and check the permissions in root explorer

  • jer85008

Thanks for the tip. However…Anyone else less than enamoured with Dead Trigger? I realize it was only $.99, but I was pretty stoked to try it after Shadowgun. Feels too much like a “freemium” game to me…(end rant).

You can get through the whole game without buying anything (I did).

Besides, with all of the in app purchases, the game still comes out to around $8 anyway which is what most people expected it to be.

I would much prefer game developers did things this way.

    • Higher_Ground

I just wish they would fix the controls so that you don’t end up turning around by accident when you touch the left side while while reloading. Much more frustrating than grinding for money.

  • Luxferro

Gotta leave it to Nvidia always having the software companies, for which games they sponsor, purposely dumb down the graphics on competitors chips. They do this in the PC world, and now on mobile platforms…

  • http://twitter.com/ChrisCorp ChristopherCorpening

This is the first game I am putting and playing on my N7!

  • http://twitter.com/ChrisCorp ChristopherCorpening

This is the first game I am putting on my N7!

  • George Davis

Tried this hack on my Bionic (running ICS .232 leak). Looks amazing, and runs perfectly smooth. Thanks for the tip!

    • kixofmyg0t

Did you get the 1.2Ghz over clock with 232?

      • George Davis

Yep, got the 1.2GHz bump on .2233, .230, and now .232. Loving this phone right now.

        • kixofmyg0t

Sweet. I’ve been planning on putting 232 on mine but I’ve been working with another phone lately. Can you confirm GPU clocks?

          • George Davis

Where would I find that info?

  • Liquidretro

    This should be good on the N7 if it ever ships . . . . . #Waiting

  • Geronimus

Nice. Performed these steps on my Galaxy SII and the game runs perfectly find with all the added effects! Sweet tip.

  • mike

Actually it is easier than that, on the main screen for dead trigger click options, then click graphics and change it to high, you now have tetra 3 graphics

    • Droidzilla

Including the extras they enable for Tegra devices?

      • Lambo_21

        no… :/ just checked mine… :(

        • Droidzilla

I thought not. It’s cool that the graphical enhancements are all there, just need a little build.prop style hack to be unleashed. $10 says some enterprising dev will come up with an .apk for rooted users or something like (though the current process is pretty darned easy).

          • Lambo_21

have you done it? is it worth it?

          • Droidzilla

I haven’t as I don’t have any Tegra 3 games, yet. If you have a game with a Tegra Zone counterpart and are rooted, I don’t know why you wouldn’t do this.

          • Lambo_21

Not rooted on my TF101… been debating back and forth about it, just wanted to see if it would run smooth enough before making a final call.

          • Droidzilla

It’s a personal call, but I’d say go for root! It’s easy to do, opens up some nice possibilities, and I have yet to hear of a single person either hard bricking or being denied warranty coverage due to root. It’s your device and your risk, of course, but I recommend it.

          • Lambo_21

i did it back when i had the OG Droid, was easy and did it to my galaxy player (still wish i never bought that thing). have wanted to do it to my bionic but since that thing gives me issues i dont want to risk it if indeed it needs to go to vzw…. but i may do it to my TF bc there is a tool to do it with. haha so i have the experience to do it, so it probably will happen. its all about when now haha

          • Droidzilla

I was the same with my RAZR. Never felt the need to even root until I couldn’t get the ICS firmware pushed during the soak test (I’m in the test). I ended up ADB flashing a leaked ROM, but I still have yet to root. It’s just not necessary to root/ROM like it used to be with the OG Droid (still miss that little tank of a device).

          • Lambo_21

yea agreed with that last part

      • Hunter

Seems to be working on my GNex running 4.1.1

  • feztheforeigner

I am LOVING this site right now!!!

  • http://twitter.com/Chasemanhattan3 Chase Chick

This work ok on Gnex? I have a 384mhz OC GPU so I think I’m good right? Also, is there something similar to do for this for Shadowgun?

    • kixofmyg0t

Overclocking your GPU doesn’t do anything but drain battery. Of course Noone will believe me so take it from the horses mouth.

      http://rootzwiki.com/topic/13092-leankernel-minimalistic-kernel-ics-3100-jb-410-71312/page__st__3110__p__434188#entry434188

      • http://twitter.com/Chasemanhattan3 Chase Chick

Using Peanut Butter Jelly Time. I get plenty of battery. GPU comes overclocked stock. But hey, to each his own. I leave it at 1200mhz and the GPU comes out of the box at 384mhz. Not undervolted or any of that crazy business. If you want a great kernel, with not a lot of unnecessary features, and only is OC and updated with mainline linux kernel, you can do no better than PBJ,

        • snobrdr2324

It actually doesn’t come at 384, it comes at 307. A while back fransisco franco posted a link to the reason why the 307 is stock and why ocing to 384 only drains battery. So if you haven’t specifically oc’ed your GPU its running at 307mhz.

Same here….is there a way you can do this with shadowgun? This mod is freaking cool. Now I’m enjoying it even more. It’s really smooth with added effects. I love my Gnex!!!

  • thecharrr

Oh boy, it’s like back in the day where some programs looked their best (or work) on a certain GPU only

  • Michael Forte

To me the whole optimized for Tegra just sounds like a bunch of marketing BS.

    • Droidzilla

      That’s because it is.

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y28e4cFHVqE&context=C400d214ADvjVQa1PpcFOiLGlDqf2sJr2k4TNISoJzm8bFM7wgYKU= TheAndroid1

I think that there needs to be some way for the phone to figure out how powerful your phone is and automatically optimize the graphics settings.

It doesn’t work perfectly on my Galaxy Nexus. I get hangups at the beginning of every game and some random stops while playing the game. It can obviously handle more than what it’s currently getting, just not fully maxed out.

Maybe Google can implement something to help this situation in the next version of Android.

    • fixxmyhead

maybe but why do they look better on tegra devices? they always have extra special effects like shading and other stuff

  • SirSoloDolo

    Any phones with Tegra 3?

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

      One X, none on VZW

  • TheWenger

Would be interesting to see how other SoCs handle the load. I would imagine some of the more current chips would work just fine.

    • Abhijeet Mishra

The GNex handles it fine with its old SGX540. Hangs for a second every minute or so, but apart from that, totally smooth. Tegra 3 only? Yeah, right xD

      • http://twitter.com/Chasemanhattan3 Chase Chick

Is your GPU stock or OC?

        • Abhijeet Mishra

stock. game does slow down a little when there’s water dripping down on the screen, but apart from that smooth with only those one second hangs. :D

    • kretz7

My sock handles my load pretty well.

      • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

        Oh snap!

      • nwd1911

        ZING!!!!! Must be a Friday.

      • Kevin

        *slow clap*

      • Steve Wojciechowski

You almost made me choke on my lunch, LOL

    • Scuzzy19

tested this with my GS2 and it runs smooth without much trouble, I do see a small hiccup here and there but will test more when im out of work ;)
