Thursday Poll: What Version of Android is Your Phone Currently Running?

Each month, the Android team updates their OS distribution charts to show the percentages of users running specific versions. In the most recent, we saw Ice Cream Sandwich jump up to over 10% for the first time, but the clear leader in the clubhouse remains Gingerbread after many months. Jelly Bean has yet to make an appearance on the chart which makes sense, since it has not officially been released yet. The August numbers will likely include it.

Until then, we thought we would ask our community, so that we can see what our numbers look like. I get this feeling that the majority is not going to be Gingerbread and will likely be a mix of ICS and Jelly Bean.

Anyone running JellyBean on the T’Bolt yet?

  • James Depew

Droid RAZR on ICS and Transformer EeePad TF101 on ICS. Can’t wait for my Nexus 7 with JB to arrive; it should fit in the white coat pocket perfectly!

  • DinoRick

CM9 on Droid 3 (Yes, Motorola, smooth ICS on the Droid 3 :p)
getting S3 next week though (where are those JB roms <.<)

  • WalkerNA

Sadly, I will probably never get to experience it on my Droid Charge. I’ll probably have to wait until I can afford a new phone w/o the upgrade pricing so that I can retain my unlimited data.

  • Before having voted in the poll, it said I had already voted for Gingerbread. So I went back to the main Droid Life page to see if I could vote from there, and it said I had already voted for ICS. I then clicked on the comments link to get back into the post, and it said that I hadn’t yet voted. So I voted for Jelly Bean, the OS I am running.

This happens to me pretty regularly with the polls. I’m using Chrome on a MBA running Lion.

  • John Wildman

I long for the day when we don’t have to do these polls because everyone is running the newest version. Doubt it is that easy, but a guy can dream

  • GawkerRedesignSucks

I’m on Jelly Bean and I freaking love it! Thank you, my beautiful Galaxy Nexus!

  • Michael Caffey

i dont know anymore….. ha went from d1, d2 , x2. been rooted since day one, and now things have gone so fast i dont even know where i am anymore!

  • schwinn8

Froyo on my “ancient” OG Droid. None of the other ROMS seem to run reliably and quickly as Project Elite 4.2. I tried GB and went back. Simply put, there is really no feature in GB that I “need”… so I stayed back.

Waiting for my SGS3 to arrive from preorder, so I will be on ICS soon.

  • Chris Wilkey

I was on on “pure” JB until yesterday. Used it for about 2 weeks. Its not quite ready yet and the CM9 RC1 is so smooth… Also, I have grown dependent on lightflow and it hasn’t been fixed yet for JB.

  • Jelly Bean at 29%? Come on people, let’s be honest.

    • PSU_DI

If I had to guess a large portion of users on the site own the Galaxy Nexus and then a large amount of those people have switched over to the stock Jelly Bean roms that were ported last week. I’ve been on JB for 2 weeks and I don’t think I could go back to ICS anymore, I’d miss the performance and notifications in JB too much

  • eriher

Jelly Bean master race reporting in. It’s fantastic,

  • oh i forgot i’m running ICS on my tmo springboard

  • i’ve been running JB on my Galxy nexus but stock no mods or custom kernels and haven’t have one single issue except app compatibility but i went thru that with with ICS i know soon the apps will up date for it some have already
been using jdkorelipse V2 not gonna bother with V3 when everything is running perfect and might just stay on this since that crap with apple and google doing a workaround

  • ICS on my Xoom 4G and ICS leak on my DROID Bionic. Runs great on both, only wish is a color correct on weather bug, or color change option in the notification weather preview.

  • Glen

I go from Droid 2 Gingerbread today to SGS 3 ICS Monday. (Also have ICS on TPrime.)

  • dbam987

Google and Microsoft are innovating now, while Apple gets a bit rotten.

  • dbam987

I’d really love it if the RAZR gets a JB update from Motorola/Verizon. ICS is epic already, but now I want Jelly Beans to top it with.

  • Trueblue711

    Wow…. 30% on Jelly Bean already? #YouKnowYoureOnaTechSiteWhen

    • Heartless12

    • Well it’s such an easy upgrade…

      • Only if you have a phone that it has a leak/port

  • Edward

How can I get Jelly Bean on my Droid RAZR MAXX

  • Nazzi_Muhammad

Google has some dumb-ass names for these versions of Android. Makes you feel like you’re 2 freakin years old.

  • Sobr0801

    Rezound on ics

  • br_hermon

I am seriously impressed with the number of people on JB. I expected a lot but not that many. Cheers to all the dev community! 🙂

  • JPose

    Gingerbread. Vintage!

  • my R2D2 is still on GB, doesnt look like it will even get any more love. oh well still have a year left before a new phone.

    • CapnShiner

Don’t forget that if you wait and take a subsidized upgrade, you lose unlimited data and any special promos you have. It may not be worth the discount, in which case you don’t have to wait unless you can’t afford it yet.

  • kixofmyg0t

All of my devices are running ICS.

    Droid X -CM9
    Droid 2 Global -CM9
    Droid 3 -CM9
    Atrix -CM9
    Xoom -EoS V2.0
    Bionic- Gummy

  • gkinsella2

I’ll vote tomorrow when I have my brand new GS3 in hand!

    • achaff86

Right now I have Jelly Bean on my gnex but tomorrow i’ll be back to ICS with my gs3!!!

  • Mike

Jelly bean for my Galaxy Nexus and Ice Cream Sandwhich for my GTab2 7. Couldn’t be happier with Androd.

  • Tatsuo

whats up with these polls? First time i’ve ever got on DL today, never saw this poll and it says I already voted… with Jelly Bean. no i didnt! weird.

  • Nakrohtap

Clearly, this is skewed by only the geeks that read this blog. Either way, it’s a good sign for JB! If this poll went out to everyone who owns an Android phone, another selection would need to be added for “Huh?”

  • Guest

Wow! 48% of the people are using ICS. (Even though only 9% of them really are)
    What a great survey.

    • ericl5112

I highly doubt many people are lying. Just a lot of people with GNex’s, or rom flashers.

    • OhAaron

You do realize this is an Android enthusiast website, right? It’s very possible that most of us are running phones with recent versions of Android.

    • PC_Tool

Do you actually think the folks visiting this site don’t know how (or want) to flash an ICS phone? Do you honestly think many of them bought phones that didn’t have decent dev support?

I’m surprised it’s not higher….though that’s largely due to JB, I am sure.

    • Greg Smith

My guess is that the ICS stats went up significantly when the Razr/Razr Maxx OTA update finally rolled out. That got my wife’s phone on ICS. But I just went from AOKP M5 to Vicious JB V3 on my Verizon Gnex

  • droidbeat

I want jb. But I want flash.

    • TrojanFan

I’m running flash on JB just fine… no issues to date. So don’t let that stop you.

    • TylerCameron

The only thing to use flash for is porn and ads.

  • nightscout13

I tried rubbing unsalted butter on my ICS Gnex, but project butter did not install.

    • CapnShiner

Have you tried the salted kind? What about I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter?

      • nightscout13

should I warm it up first? (the butter)

        • CapnShiner

          Try both ways

  • nightscout13

    WOW 31% running JB? that’s good…..

  • ddevito

I’ve got the jelly belly! Team Vicious V2.

  • Kyle Cummings

A better question should be, “What version of Android SHOULD your phone be running?”.

  • Alan Chavez

I’m running Froyo but that’s only because I lost my thunderbolt this past weekend but since I pre ordered my SGSIII I didn’t wanna waste an insurance claim on the piece of crap TB. Anyway, Another case where the OG Droid comes to the rescue!!!

    • heh, I still have my TB. About to be replaced by a GNex sometime tomorrow. I know how you feel, im not too happy with my Tbolt either.

      • Alan Chavez

Yeah, mine was running a BAMF rom with sense 3.0 and battery life was still crappy. I guess the only thing I miss about it is the LTE tethering.

        • decided to try the liquid smooth rom on my TBolt last night to give it one last hurrah. It’s not bad, the rom works very smoothly and everything is quick and snappy. It’s making the wait a little more bearable.

      • achaff86

I didn’t like my TB I was glad I got rid of it and got the galaxy nexus!! But tomorrow i’ll have the gs3 …. tomorrow tomorrow I love ya tomorrow your only a day away LOL

  • Fattie McDoogles

ICS on Rezound, RAZR MAXX and GNex (my mom borrowed it the Sunday before JB came out)

  • dylan84

My Atrix is currently rocking AOKP (Android 4.0.4) hardcore. Cant wait to see Jellybean in the future though.

  • AnotherAndroidKid

    Peanut Buttery Jelly Bean Time

  • zaxwashere

Was running vanirbean on my gnex until last night, had to switch to aokp to check out some issues i was having moving files over

apparently divx was trying to read my mkvs as i transferred them o.0

  • Those not running JB don’t know how good Android truly is. ICS doesn’t even count anymore, it feels buggy, slow, and outdated compared to JB. Android finally feels “done”. Though I know it will continue to get better, with JB it finally feels truly polished and smooth. My Gnex has JB on it, my wife’s still has ICS. The difference between the 2 is night and day.

    • i’ll just wait till they get the bugs out of the beans

      • ddevito

        Technically speaking…

        • TylerCameron

On my nexus, I notice that if I send some text messages, I get this popup that says “Sending SMS messages you’ve sent a large amount of messages in the past hour. Are you sure you want to send this?” Or something like that. I didn’t even send 100 texts!

          • SeanBello

that’s because it’s not supposed to be on your phone yet. the things it’s SUPPOSED to run on currently, it runs perfectly

      • KleenDroid

I’d be curious to know what you are talking about as far as bugs.

    • Knlegend1

Yeah I heard this today from someone. I was like dang really .1 makes a world of a difference like that? I have to get Jelly Bean and experience this for myself.

    • So funny, I hear this same comment with every new Android version.

      • I have never said that before, but in this case I agree. With each new version I have said that it is smoother, and faster, etc. But with JB there is no lag. Anywhere. I was never able to say that before. There was LESS lag with each new version, but with JB on my GNex, it’s finally gone completely.

    • devator22

I have to agree, this is truly the apex of mobile phone development. Anything from here is just icing. 4.1 is the first os I didn’t feel silly running stock. Almost all the optimizations that amateur devs had to put into previous android versions are rendered irrelevant by the speed and fluidity of jelly bean.

  • Mike

    • Diablo81588

      Already here 🙂

  • shehippie

Ive got my Droid running 2.2, DX on 2.3, Rezound on 2.3 and my Razr Maxx is ICS. =)

  • Falcon34

I loved ICS, but after using jelly bean I can’t imagine using anything else.

    • PC_Tool

Yep. Same here. Not missing AOKP nearly as much as I thought I would be. Would love me some AOKP JB though…

      • El Big CHRIS

  • Android Guru

    • kkanemt

  • Ice Cream Sandwich, but the charging port on my Galaxy Nexus broke so waiting for the replacement to come then it’s off to Jelly Bean

    • Diablo81588

      What a surprise 😛

  • Gingerbread… because the dev community for TBolt havent been able to get a fully functional ICS Rom working (data being the elusive part missing in all roms currently).

    • PC_Tool

      RIL is such a PITA…

      • on the bright side, I have a GNex arriving in about 19 hours time. so *shrug* seems I will have a phone with jelly bean before HTC can get around to updating the TBolt with ICS.

      • zaxwashere

seriously, i remember back when jt1134 was trying to get the ril on the cm7 ports for the samsung fascinate…i thought it was gonna take forever

Sorry you guys cant get it on the tbolt D:

        • PC_Tool

jt is tha’ bomb. Made it possible for me to enjoy my Fascinate. Still wish I’d saved a MIUI with the Rick S mods…2.19 (I think?) was solid as hell.

Without jt…none of it would have happened.

      • pj

It really is. I’ve flashed ICS to 4 other phones already, but my tbolt is still sitting here on gb. I even flashed it just to play with it for a few hours, but without radio’s its pretty pointless.

  • Jelly Bean on the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7, Ice Cream Sandwich on the Galaxy Note.

  • I answered ICS, however I will be on JB by the end of the day.

  • 31% running Jelly Bean……Doubtful

    • On a fan site where a lot of us are nerds with Galaxy Nexuses that like to flash ROMs? Seems legit.

  • Silver Veloz

Interesting – all the people on ICS and Jelly Bean. Those of us with a Droid Bionic (even with the ICS leak), will have to revert back to Gingerbread (for a short time) to upgrade to the official ICS when it’s released. I’m still on Gingerbread (stock Bionic).

  • GB.Just until my GS3 gets here. Then I can lay my Droid X to rest. It will be a bittersweet day. The DX was my first smartphone, coming from an LG flip phone, and it has treated me well.

Verizon, hurry up and ship my damn phone already. I’m getting sick of hearing about everyone else already getting theirs and mine hasn’t even shipped!

    • naterecording

I’m in the exact same boat! My DX has been pretty darn great. It’s almost difficult to upgrade just because the thing has been so durable. I’m almost inclined to wait for the Razr HD… but alas, I have the SGS3 bug now.

      • I wanted to hold out for the Razor HD, but had to pull the trigger on the GS3 to keep my unlimited data.

        • naterecording

Is there a certain date this has to be done in order to keep unlimited data?

          • msnight04

It was June 28. If you renew your Verizon contract now and get a subsidized phone, you will be forced from your unlimited data plan.

          • naterecording

            That. sucks.

          • naterecording

So, did my price just double to $60 for 2gb of data?

          • I think you can still get 2gb for $30 if you’re on an individual plan

          • naterecording

I checked with Verizon, and yes you are correct. Even better, I can use another account to upgrade and then activate it with my own number and keep my unlimited data!

          • msnight04

If you buy a phone at full price, you can keep your unlimited data. If you get a subsidized phone, you can get an individual plan at $30 for 2GB data. Otherwise, you’ll have to get one of Verizon’s new share plans.

          • naterecording

I got some great news from Verizon: I’m the only one on my family plan with a smartphone, so I was able to use another account to upgrade to the SGS3, and then they said I can activate the phone using my own number and still keep my unlimited plan. I’m not sure if this helps people with multiple smartphones on their accounts, or individual accounts, but it works out great for people with only one smartphone on a family account!

          • You had to either by a new phone (or pre-order the GS3) before Verizon launched the “share everything” plans on June 28th. I placed my pre-order on June 12th.

    • CapnShiner

I was able to borrow my friend’s DX2, so my DX is collecting dust right now, but I’m stuck on Gingerbread for now. I haven’t heard of any ICS-based ROMs for the DX2. Unfortunately, I will be stuck for a while because I refuse to give up my “Talk and Text + Data” promotional plan and therefore I must purchase at full retail from now on. My DX was my first smartphone, coming from a borrowed LG Voyager because my enV Touch went swimming. I loved my DX. It’s a tank. I never once put a case on it, just a screen protector. After a year and a half of use, the only damage is a couple of small chips of paint off the battery door.

By the way, for anyone not familiar with Talk and Text + Data, it’s 450 minutes, unlimited text, and unlimited data for $20 off the regular price. The $480 saved over the course of a 2 year period is better than the subsidy for upgrading and re-signing for another 2 years. The fact I can keep unlimited data and leave any time I want are just icing on the cake. For anyone else fortunate enough to be on this plan, I suggest you do the same as myself.

    • IntlGrizzly

Yeah, I’m still rocking my Droid X too. I’ve decided to hold out a little longer and see what the new nexus/nexi have to offer.

  • Droidzilla

The poll results here are why Droid Life is awesome.

  • 4 votes for other. Please tell me there aren’t still people running Eclair.

    • Maybe they don’t know which version they have.

    • not everyone who reads the site has to have a phone running gingerbread+ (more often than not they are, but there are those who still hold onto devices with cupcake, donut, eclair and froyo)

    • naterecording

      Please tell me there ARE.

    • CapnShiner

There could be fans of Android or just this site who don’t currently have Android at all. Maybe they are dreaming of buying an Android device while holding their flip phone and crying softly. Maybe they are, dare I say it, iOS users. Maybe they couldn’t resist the bright colors of a Lumia(or Windows Phone in general). Hell, they could even be holding on to their Pre for dear life. If they have a Blackberry, they most likely are forced by their employer or they are one of those few stubborn loyalists. Then there’s Symbian, Bada, and anything else I forgot.

  • Since I have more than one phone I’ll clarify on here. My main phone (tmo g2) is running gingerbread, think I may try one of the ICS roms out there soon though. My back-up (tmo sidekick 4g) is stuck on foyo, unfortunately. Samsung and Tmo really messed up on that one.

  • Tweekex

What is other? I’d really hope people aren’t still running Eclair..

  • TheFirstUniverseKing

ICS MIUI on my awesome awesome Samsung Fascinate.

    • PC_Tool

I wish I could still get Rick S. GB MIUI on my Fassy….loved those ROMS.

None of them are linked anywhere anymore though. 🙁

  • MattH818

Bionic ICS Leak .230 Love it!

  • Interesting. Over 80% of readers are running ICS or JB. WE ARE TEH 10%!

    • Michael

      I sir am the 1%

  • realfoxm

Reverted back to ICS temporarily, at least until source drops.

  • billy routh

Jelly Belly 2.1 It is awesome.

    • EC8CH

The Jelly Belly gets updated so fast I can’t keep up… still on 1.8.

      I love it though.

  • EC8CH

    Jelly Belly V1.8

Cause the G-Nex is awesome like that

  • Jacob121791

    CUPCAKE FTW!!!!!!!

    • Are you actually running Cupcake?

      • PC_Tool

When are they gonna release it for the G’Nex though…jeez…taking them like, forever….

    • E A butler

      lol… I want a cupcake phone

  • Smitchell

    Droid3 stuck on Gingerbread.

  • Cale Leda

In our house, we have 3 android devices. OG Droid, Droid Bionic, and a HP Touchpad. All of them are running ICS…yes even the OG Droid.

    • Jacob121791

I put ICS on my Eris the other day :).

Gotta love the Android Dev community!!

      • Fattie McDoogles

        how does that run?

      • kwubba

how is it running? I have my old eris still sitting around.

    • djembeman

Oooh… I need to put Jelly Bean on my Droid 1! Great idea, it’s already rooted. I’ll search for it.

  • still on Froyo on the OG Droid !!

  • Smeckle

Rooted GNex on ICS still. I’ve been waiting for Pete to release a new Bugless Beast build for 4.1 but he hasn’t been responding to me on Twitter and I’m really thinking of jumping ship for now until he does come out with one. Would really love to try JB…can anybody recommend a good ROM with it? All I know is what was posted here on DL last week.

    • Jacob121791

I like Jelly Belly but it is hard to keep up with their updates…. (2+ a day)

But i guess that’s a good problem to have.

      • Smeckle

        Thanks, I’ll look into it!

      • PC_Tool

Still using the first V2 from Vicious…been rock solid and I end up nandroiding back to it every time I try any of the “updated” versions due to bugs. They seem to actually be making it worse at times.

        • Mike Petty

Yup. V2 was really just leaked JB with a couple of fixes. Anything after that, and it’s really people just diddling with packages until the source is released. Stick with V2 or other with stock JB kernel for the next month.

        • Matt

Have you tried V3 with franco’s kernel? I haven’t noticed any bugs and has performed wonderfully.

          • PC_Tool

Switched to Modaco’s rom last night. Working beautifully, don’t want to fix what ain’t broken atm.

    • necessaryj

Im with you. Bugless Beast has been awesome. I did jump to JB to try it out. As soon as Pete updates I’m back.

  • Adam Chiou

I have an OG Droid running Ice Cream Sandwich and a HP Touchpad running Ice Cream Sandwich.

  • Rocking Jelly Bean. Come on source!

  • Galaxy Nexus on ICS, but can’t wait for JB.

    • PC_Tool

Of course you can. If you couldn’t, you’d be running it. 😉

  • My phone is stuck on 2.1, tnks to Sony

  • Jellybean here. Vicious V3, to be exact.

    • ddevito

Any reason to switch from V2?

      • Jon

Beats Audio; if that’s your thing

    • b00ky

I had some strange issues with Vicious V2 and now I am much happier with Vanirbean V7. Vicious V2 definitely had issues with the GPS locking and a noticeable lag on certain things like screen touches, opening apps, scores showing up very slowly/stuttering in some games – just some general processing delays. I always do a clean install so not sure what it was. Maybe V3 fixed some of those issues for good, but I can vouch for Vanirbean V7 as well. For those of you that didn’t already know this, Lux did have some issues with JB which have apparently been fixed. It prevented me from answering calls, etc. I tried it again this morning and it still prevented me from answering calls. Weird. Love Lux in general though.

  • Knlegend1

Big ups to the 2% still running Froyo!!!

    • hells yea!!!!!

    • I was rocking Froyo (CM6) on a Mytouch 3G for a week before I got the Galaxy Nexus at I/O.

      • E A butler

        Froyo is gross

    • NicholasMicallef

      it’s 1% now xD

  • l k

4 lines in my house My Gnex JB Wifes GS3 ICS a Bionic ICS and another Gnex ICS. We also have 2 D1s inretirement on GB and a forgoten Thunderbolt on ICS

  • StephanC

So, I currently have a RAZR Maxx but because of the issues I’m having with the screen Verizon is letting me return it for free. Should I get a Galaxy Nexus or stick with the RAZR Maxx? Or perhaps even preorder the GS3? What do you guys think? I’m already locked into the unlimited plan because I upgraded before the switch over.

    • Knlegend1

It depends on you actually. If you are a super power user and eat through battery then get another Maxx. Me personally want some Jelly beans so I would go for the Nexus….if they can still sale you one.

    • Bionicman

id just like to say jelly bean is amazing. if you dont mind a little work to unlock and root, get the GNex and Jelly Belly rom – amazin!

    • hard to argue with that beast of a battery on the maxx, plus you have moto radios, which are far better than gnex

    • 😉

  • ICS!!!!

  • Jeremy Lukan

Up until a week ago I would have said Gingerbread since I was still using CM7. But I’ve since bought a used Galaxy Nexus, that I rooted and loaded with 4.1. Now I can’t wait for CM9.1 (If that’s what they are going to call it)

  • greenbacks

Jelly Bean has been great love it, all the Google apps and OS have been polished. I have to say best OS on the planet. Keep it up Google

    • CapnShiner

I’m curious- do you mean best mobile OS or are you including PCs as well?

  • Greg Morgan

I have an OG Droid running Froyo, Droid Razr Running GB, and a GNex running JB. Who knew ICS would be what’s skipped?! lol

    • why is the Razr running GB? The update is waiting for you to pull it!

      • Greg Morgan

I know, i just bought the Razr and am just playing with it right now. I kinda like the Gingerbread blur that moto has on here. It’ll be ICS by the weekend.

        • the ICS on the Razr is actually really awesome, as close to stock as I ever thought that an OEM would make. My wife has a MAXX and she’s starting to really like the update even though she isn’t techy at all.
          I have a GNex running Vicious V3.

  • Mark F

Mine is “wanabe Jelly bean”. LOL

  • Waiting for Cyanogen mod to come out of RC with jelly bean. Then my GNex will be perfect.

  • teevirus

    Jelly Bean! Root 4 Life.

  • Gingerbread, for now. I get my SGS3 tomorrow to replace my Thunderbolt.

  • Nick Cav.

People still rock Froyo? Haha those were like the DROID 1 days…

  • Dan

Im running Jelly Belly 2.2 (4.1)

    • Was 2.2 like just released a few minutes ago?
I flashed jellybelly 2.1 earlier haha

    • will bartlett

did they fix that fricken equalizer issue where it randomly jumps to full volume?

      • Dan

Light Flow notifications won’t clear. The dev knows and is working on it. That is the only one I’ve had a problem with.

seems like a few applications (at least for me on a toro GNex) are being marked as incompatible on the Play Store since I’ve switched to JellyBelly 2.2. most notably Scan and YouTube. Wallet is MIA from the store but still works.

      • K9 mail wasn’t working for a while, but the dev updated it within a couple days. Everything else I’ve tried works.
