Nokia Claims Nexus 7 Infringes Upon Some of Their Patents, Will it Ever End?

Hot off the heels of the Galaxy Nexus getting slapped with an injunction, the Nexus 7 is now under attack based on another patent dispute. Nokia is claiming that neither ASUS nor Google asked to use a WiFi patent that the company owns. One would think that the move is more for Nokia to get a cut from the sales of the Nexus 7 rather than a ban on its sale, but that’s tough to tell until things become a bit more official.

Neither Google nor ASUS have responded to the accusation yet, but you can imagine that it isn’t going to go over well. With the Nexus 7 already giving them almost no profit per device, shelling out cash to Nokia won’t be fun. We know many of you are planning on getting a Nexus 7, could you stand to see another Nexus device banned?

How are they supposed to get a part of the sales on a device that is being sold close to manufacturing cost?

This is just another reason why Google needs to just copyright Android. It would be nice for everyone to share and be open but it looks like there is no end.

As distasteful as the patent scene in the tech world is right now, the funniest part of this article is that the next few words of the definition displayed in the image you chose explicitly show that you constantly misuse the term “patent troll” due to a strict requirement being that the troll in question must have “no intention to manufacture or market the patented invention.”

  • Rotkaeqpchen

Nokia is transforming to… well, Microsoft… Poor Nokia, I used to love you so many years…

    • JB

It’s pretty sad for a company that was, for years, the leader of the smart phone market. Won’t be long until they follow Palm off the cliff into oblivion.

  • Mack

Will it end?? Ask again later…

  • Knlegend1

    Wifi really? Smh

  • erikiksaz

And here is nokia’s plan b.

  • Prime7

Maybe it infringes upon Windows Phone 7. Why not, since you can patent broad concepts like that these days anyway.

  • Justin Frieberg

at this point if Nokia makes a huge stink Google needs to just buy them for the patent portfolio.

    • OhAaron

Lmfao, I didn’t even think of that! They could easily afford Nokia.

    • Treknologist

Great solution! You want to screw with us? Here, we are buying you out!

      • Jay

Ah if only it really worked that way, but Nokia can prettymuch just patent troll them and tell them to bugger off when they bring up buyouts.

Time for Chrysler to sue all the car makers for making minivans.

  • Bionic

Nokia can go suck a left-curved dickk

  • g2gsr

When is Ford going to sue GM for designing a car with an internal combustion engine that uses unleaded gas?

  • Mustang5Oh

Nokia is grasping onto anything at this point since they are utter failures and have to suckle from the teet of Microsoft to not end.

I can only imagine this is a particular variant or technique for implementing WiFi technology (maybe a particular antenna design?). Obviously Nokia doesn’t own any specific WiFi band (a/b/g/n) as they’ve not come after any of the previous devices on those grounds. So Google/Asus can simply divulge the tech used in the Nexus 7 and show it doesn’t infringe, change the tech so it doesn’t infringe (there are surely many options), or negotiate a license fee (which is probably neither necessary or appealing). I’m not too worried about this one, at least not yet.

Nokia needs to make $$ someway

jeez these large companies create more drama than high school kids -.-

  • MookieJay

Wow really? Can Google not catch a break? Money-suckers everywhere these days. I will be pissed if they ban the Nexus 7…the best bang for your buck!

    • Cowboydroid

I have to think Google has enough legal expertise on retainer to hold them off. Going after the Nexus devices directly is not going to end well for either Apple or Nokia.

      • riteshk

        This ^^

        • michael arazan

How can anyone make a phone or tablet with the excess of similar and vague patents? Google needs to create a search engine just for patents only so everyone can just Google-Patents to see if they are infringing after they make they’re prototype. So we can put an End to stupid patent trolls. Or maybe a WikiPatent.

  • EvanTheGamer

What is Nokia, and how do you kill it with lots of fire monkeys?

Seriously though, as long as I get my Nexus 7 before that non-sense goes through(a BIG if), I don’t give a rats ass in clown hell.

  • nathanp8

Google could start marketing their Nexus line with, “Banned in seven countries!” Might be a just the thing they need to boost sales.

    • Damien Brown

add a tattoo skin on he back and say
“its not your mothers tablet” LMAO

  • http://twitter.com/HowdyFellers Inspector Butters

    a wifi patent??? really???

    • chris125

i love how wifi patents are allowed to do this yet 3g patents aren’t. I’d say wifi is pretty standard for a tablet. Lame ass companies.

  • frankandsimple

    Nokia and Ikea.. two Eurotrash.

  • AnotherAndroidKid

All this is is Nokia trying to butter up to Apple in hopes of being bought by them.

    • Suke

You forget even apple pays them royalties for wifi. Nokia has one of the Mobil worlds largest patient arsenal and one of the largest licensing portfolio

No body wants to buy garbage Nokia stuff until Windows Phone 8 is out…. So what’s the point

  • Jason Purp

    Nokia fell off

  • Liderc

    Who’s Nokia?

    • http://twitter.com/AMPthe13th Adrian M. Petty

They’re those silly people making Windows Phones.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jaxon.wright Jaxon Wright

they make those phones that survive Nuclear bombs… :D

    • TheWhiteLotus

I think they make furniture or something. Not sure how that related to Android.

    • LastDanmer

      GSM creators

  • Trevor

I’m going to cry if my Nexus 7 doesn’t ship.

    • EvanTheGamer

That bs will take months before(IF) it goes through, so no worries, everyone will be getting their Nexus 7 I’m sure.

Or else I start a riot. With fire monkeys. And fire ants. And fire elephants.

      • http://twitter.com/infidel0331 Doug Kulp

I’m with you! I’ll fire bomb those Swedish communist bastard, the like of which hasn’t been seen since Dresden in WWII!

        • EvanTheGamer

AMEN to that! Nokia won’t know what hit ‘em!

          • michael arazan

Except that 16gb Nexus 7 has stopped preorders cause there are so many orders. In order to order a 16gb one you have to give them your e-mail and they’ll notify you when more are available. So for those who haven’t preordered and were waiting for places to get them, i.e. gamestop, they may not get them if there is an injunction.

          • EvanTheGamer

Wrong about Google no longer accepting pre-orders of the Nexus 7. Just added a 16 GB N7 to my cart and was able to check out(last screen), so they are still accepting pre-orders.

And yes, Google could put a hold on shipping Nexus 7′s until this Nokia mess is cleaned up. Let’s just hope Nokia has no case. I’m sure Google has the best lawyers money can buy.

        • Trevor

I’m pretty sure Nokia is Finnish, but let’s destroy them anyway!

    • Liderc

Didn’t the same thing happen with the Nexus right before the release? Was Apple suing them for something.

      • EvanTheGamer

Apple is freaking suing someone for something every day it seems. Idiots.
