U.S. Judge Grants Motion in Favor of Apple to Ban Galaxy Nexus

Well, this is unfortunate news to end the week with. Back in February, Apple targeted the Galaxy Nexus for their next patent battle, claiming it infringed on 4 of theirs (one being slide-to-unlock), and today, a judge ruled in favor of them. The actual ruling hasn’t been made public yet, so we aren’t sure which of the patents the judge has decided Android is infringing upon. This could lead to a ban of the device here in the U.S.

As more of this unfolds, we will do our best to update this post.

Cheers Nick!

  • Now I don’t even want to go to work because I’m forced to work on a Mac. Apple you go to hell, you go to hell and die.

  • JoeInMO

My Galaxy Nexus speaker has been going bad… now I waited too long to ask for a replacement. They can’t replace them. They offered me a LG Spectrum as a replacement. NO THANKS.

  • There’s more information about the lawsuit here
http://www.todaysiphone.com/2012/06/apple-beats-google-gets-injunction-against-galaxy-nexus/. The patent that allowed Apple to “win” was “U.S. Patent Number 8,086,604 – which deals with Siri voice commands and unified search functionality”.

    • Which makes no sense since Android had unified search and even voice search WAY before Apple did.

  • Nemo Hoes

All I know is they are gonna have to pry my Nexus out of my cold lifeless fingers!!

  • Jarrett Guma

  • migamixfx

wow, this just makes me want to go out and buy an iphone so much more… its because of this type of temper tantrums of apple is the reason apple products are not in this house, and not one computer here has itunes on it (ok, there is a G4 in the corner running yellow dog linux)

  • 744Mech

Florian Mueller is probably creaming his pants right now.

  • Jim

    Eff Apple, I got mine!

  • Braden Parker

This is precisely why I will never, ever own an Apple product again. Since owning an iPhone 3G an iPhone 4, and an iPad 1, I am convinced Apple cripples older hardware on purpose via iOS “upgrades.” My once speedy and stable iPad 1 has become a crash pad and nothing more. Why, look no further than iOS 4 and 5. Oh, I had to upgrade, too. It’s not as if I had a choice. Many of the apps I depended on required the latest iOS release. Plus, Apple won’t let you roll back on a device you supposedly own … supposedly. Last time I checked anyway. Apple is treading on serious thin ice here if you ask me.

I traded in my iPhone 4 for a Galaxy Nexus, and I don’t miss my iPhone at all. In fact, I am so glad it’s gone. I can do so much more on my GN than I ever could on my iPhone. Being able to replace my battery is a good start, btw. My iPad 1 is getting sold and replaced with a Nexus 7 tablet. Apple can eat shit as far as I am concerned.

  • Jose

So if they ban galaxy nexus is it all nexus ban brand what about the galaxy nexus 2 are we going to have that if they do end up making another one

  • Chris McKain

So what happens if I break my phone and use the insurance to replace the phone. Will I get a Galaxy Nexus or something else?

    • Braden Parker

I have the insurance, too. If this ban actually comes to pass, and I don’t get a replacement Galaxy Nexus, then I’m going after Apple. I’ll sue them on grounds of extortion and theft.

  • Screw you Apple. I boycott everything you are just for mere principle

  • it doenst make sense to me that you can patent something so simple as the “slide to unlock” really? come on man! apple is just a fucking joke. why do these fanboys overpay for icrap!

  • Brent Stewart

Just read over on the Verge that Apple posted the bail.

  • tbist

so will apple people chase us around like kyle on the southpark episode humancentipad trying to get our phones?

  • SniperDroid

They can have my Galaxy Nexus when they pry it from my Cold, Dead Hands… after my M4 is empty and melted.

  • EddieDaniels

Just wait until Apple makes a TV. when someone makes one better they will start patenting things like Power button to turn on. The possibilities are endless. Apple could start making doorknobs and then sue everyone for turn the doorknob to open door.

  • ddevito

too bad for Apple the Nexus 7 isn’t banned.

    • Brent Stewart

YET. Don’t underestimate the power of the dark side.

  • Brent Stewart

Apple may be innovating on the hardware front. But iOS is stagnating and they apparently don’t have the talent to take it beyond what Android offers so they want to sue them out of existence.

Other than that lame Slide-to-Unlock patent, anyone know what the other three claims are? NM, it’s in the original Verge article: slide-to-unlock, aggregated search, actionable linking, and touch screen word suggestion. Actionable linking is what they nailed HTC with. Aggregated search is the Google search widget basically – searching across multiple sources through a single interface. For iOS this is basically Siri. This could have HUGE implications for the improved Google Voice search and Google Now unleashed in Jellybean. Not sure what the last one means.

  • Corey Foltman

potential ban on a vzw device that is about to be discontinued…awesome.

    • Droid4LifeDawg

Discontinued, G-Nex is here to Stay at least until the Next…

  • AhsanS

Sort of off topic: A few weeks ago, it would have been obvious to me that the S3 > GNEX. But after seeing JB, and just realizing how much sexier and cheaper the GNEX is, I don’t know anymore. Help, anyone?

  • krusty46

I hear apple is getting the patent to send and receive MMS. they claim they had it before everyone else

    • I also hear their working on a patent for the power button. From now on all other phones will ship with a crank to power on the device.

  • losing hope….

i dont understand…why would goggle put goggle chrome/drive ect and all that stuff on iphone and ipad when apple keeps trying to block ever thing goggle doing?why dosnt goggle allow all android phone chrome before they give it to apple?is goggle going to the dark side?im losing hope….should i be buying a iphone?

    • Sven Enterlein

because google is making tons of money through the Apple products

    • PrjctArchAngel

More user, more devices, more money. Simple as that, unfortunately.

  • For a company so loved.. why are you so hated? Because of crapple like this…

  • bogy25

    F apple

  • Sven Enterlein

I got an email from the judge. Her signature says “Sent from my iDevice”

  • cole hartman

OH GOD NO WHY! I WAS PLANNING ON BUYING ONE! I will never EVER! Even think of buying an apple product again EVER! *RAGE MODE ACTIVATED*

  • I just kicked my iPhone down a flight of stairs. feelsgoodman.jpeg

  • Trevor

I imagine the Nexus is almost EOL for Verizon, seeing as the GS3 is right around the corner, so this isn’t that big a deal (for VZW customers anyway).

  • Mark F

Why is the Galaxy Nexus the only one included in the ban? All androids have “slide to unlock “?

  • Buckoman

So, what, Apple can’t innovate anymore so they choose to attack technology that’s well ahead of them? This is the perfect way to tell consumers never to buy from them again. Apple will shrink to nothing, lose their investors, and punch Tim Cook in the face on the way out.

Apple has yet to amaze me in two years. I doubt they will with anything else from this point forward. At least Google innovates. They’re too busy worried that products have a screen to view things on in the shape of a rectangle and a flat surface.

  • Is this the same judge to “rewrite” Obamacare?

  • Brian_2112

There goes Apple again, throwing their weight around, claiming that everything they have was theirs to begin with…all because they have the paperwork. I have no kind words to say about Apple, especially since most of those words are inappropriate for this setting.

How in the world can people continue to support a company whose main strategy for their competition is “sue, sue, sue”? They aren’t interested in advancing their own interface and product as much as they are interested in blocking the competition by using litigation. Apple needs to get a reality check; they aren’t God.

  • kidheated

Bring on the outrage! I can’t wait to see how this one unfolds! Who knew *pple was so good at making people hate them. I hope more line workers riot in the *pple factory. They deserve it, at the very least.

    • kidheated

I may just buy a Nexus 7 out of spite now 🙂 My contribution to el Goog’s legal fight against the fruity oppressor.

  • glad to know i own a naughty product, or two.

  • ParksDekle

Isn’t there a law where the competition can’t prevent the competing company from making profits? Something about becoming a monopoly. Can we start a petition so that this bull crap ruling gets overthrown?

  • Frank F

ok serious SH*t HERE PEOPLE…who here knows some damn good hackers…i say bring them down…attack siri servers and apple servers every other day until they stop with this crap…im sure most hackers use android anyways for it hackability as apposed to Icrap..im serious here…i dont know enough but i am just planting the seed…either that or create a G+ account and make it an anti apple site and have everyone join and convince them to trade away their Icrap..i dunno im just spitballing here…GOD i HATE THEM

  • First ObamaCare. Now this. The judges have gone mad!

  • So is apple going to come and take this pos. Away from me

    • RoadsterHD1

I take it you have a GNEX?

    • Brent Stewart

POS? Don’t like it? Wanna trade? I’ll give you my Xperia Play. At least the GNex has ICS and is getting (or has if you root/flash) JB. I sadly won’t be seeing either. I might have a near vanilla Android experience but unless I root I’m stuck on GB 🙁

  • Davros

aphole is just trying to sue their competition out of existence while they still have the cash since they cant out develop them, just like good ole steve said he would try to do. I think aphole should move their offices to Deuche Bagistan.

    • nightscout13

Maybe Steve Jobs isn’t dead…. Think about it, he “died” 1 day after the release of the disappointing 4S? It might have been a publicity stunt! He “died” to gain sales!

      • “The iPhone 4S becomes the quickest-selling iPhone ever, with pre-orders
topping 1 million in the first 24 hours and sales numbering 4 million in its first weekend.”

I’m sure they were horribly disappointed.

        • nightscout13

It was disappointing in terms of differentiating itself form the iPhone 4 specs wise. The only reason it was “successful” is because more people are born, and more people are adapting cell phones. I think if you were to run the numbers PER CAPITA, it would definitely disappoint.

          • double post

          • nightscout13

            Captain Obvious

          • No need to get testy.

          • nightscout13

This is an open discussion buddy, I’m free to say what i please.

          • I’m not your buddy, pal.

          • nightscout13

He’s not your friend, guy! -Southpark

          • I was hoping we could have had an endless cycle of buddy and pal. Way to throw a wrench.

          • nightscout13

Well at least we ended on a positive note.

          • “The iPhone 4S propelled what is now confirmed to have been the most
profitable quarter any technology company has ever recorded. Apple on
Wednesday reported record earnings for the December quarter, revealing a profit of $13.06 billion on revenue that surpassed $46 billion.”

I think not; best not to lie to ourselves. I’m a harsh critic of the Evil Empire but the truth is they’re making hand over fist money. In this economy success is measured by $$$$.

          • nightscout13

We shall see what happens in another 5 years.

      • Davros

I hated the guy with every fiber of my being, but I have to admit he is the greatest salesman who ever lived.

        • nightscout13

Ya right up there with ShamWOW and Billy Mays LOL

  • can’t waint until apple wins them all and nobody even uses that phone anymore…. what a waste lol

  • Greyhame

This might just be what android needs.. there’s no way Google can sit idly by now.. they’ll have to take a stand.

    • nightscout13

Watch, Google will put the SMACK down on Apple, I think they are piling a case right now, will all those Motorola patents! It’s gonna be such a big patent suit, that Apple will cease to exist! They will pay through the nose for trying to FACK with GOOGLE!

      • EvanTheGamer

that Apple will cease to exist” – THIS I would LOVE to see! Or not see?

Sure, thousands of Apple employees would be out of jobs, but guess what, they knew what they were getting themselves into.

        • mustbepbs

They’re just a bunch of sunglasses-wearin’, duck-face makin, fedora-capped hipsters anyway. Maybe they can go protest somewhere.

    • EvanTheGamer

And a stand they shall take. Google vs. Apple — TO THE DEATH!

SPOILER: Google will have their heads on a spike. If this happened in the olden days, and Google was in the North and Apple was in the West, I can tell you that they would have fought it out by now, and Google would have been victorious.

  • Android1997

And my friends ask me why i dont have an iPhone..

  • erik

At least by the time a court bans a device its at the end of its sales life anyway.

  • This is why I hate f-n apple

  • Philip A. Kaiser

Much like the notification bar, Apples slides in too late for anyone to care. Nexus is already on its way into the dust bin for the SIII. Anyone that wants one has one by now. If not, move on over to the SIII and support Samsung anyway. Win-win

    • Philip A. Kaiser

By the way, I am by no means saying tbr Nexus is outdated. I am just saying that those of us that really wanted one have one.

      • Dave

I’d agree but Apple will more than likely bring another case against the GSIII (and taken from this), will be granted an injunction against it as well. Although that depends on timing, introducing a new case would likely delay the trial for this one at the end of July. Hard to say at this point what Apple will do.

  • MikeSaver

Will this ban affect updates for the Nexus?

    • SeanBello

not likely. there will be an instant appeal and it’ll get tied up forever. with any luck we might get an extra update out of the deal.

      • EvanTheGamer

Besides that, who cares about OTA updates when you can simply root and unlock the bootloader, and get updates that way.

        • wickets

but if goog isnt updating how much can a developer tack on?

          • EvanTheGamer

True that…but there is always a way!

    • nightscout13

  • Jeff “BIG RED”

So what is apple going to break down my door and pull my nexus out of my hand? ROFL!!!! Apple should learn to quit messing with Samsung. Its like punching your business associate that you do tons of business with in the NADS!!!

  • This news is literally going to break the internet..time to step outside to calm myself down and enjoy my Friday.

    • EvanTheGamer

Naw…the Internet got itself broken after witnessing the single greatest live demo ever to grace the net…when Google live demo’d Glass with skydiving!
