Fully Working Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ROMs Already Available

If you were a seasoned Android user watching the Google Keynote yesterday where they announced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, you had to be thinking “when will I get this on my phone?” Google said “mid-July” but some of us just can’t wait that long. Late last night, developers jdkoreclipse and Team Liquid were busy porting a nandroid of 4.1 on a GSM Galaxy Nexus over to Verizon’s, and it’s working.

The file is flashable through ClockworkMod Recovery, but fully updates you to Google’s next OS with all the features intact. The new Google Voice Search, the “buttery smooth” transitions and everything that was announced yesterday is running smoothly on the phone. A full wipe is recommended before flashing however so you might want to make a backup before hand. Get yourself some Jelly Bean at the link below!

  • Mike

JD or Team Liquid?? Any difference? Which one are people having better results with?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Darius-M-Clark/1420215236 Darius M. Clark

this is the longest backup Ive ever had!!

  • rawson815

Hell to the ya running as I type got to love a nexus device

  • strows

question, When flashing something like this and you need to do a wipe is that just WIPE CACHE PARTITION?

    • Mike Cox

you need to wipe/factory reset and you should wipe cache yes

    • SD_Scott

Safe bet is to wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik, rinse and repeat!

      • strows

Thank you, I wanted to be really sure I was doing it right. Now running Jelly Bean!!!

  • jak_341

I called it! Jelly Bean ROMS for GNex before Moto rolls out ICS. Absolutely pathetic Moto! Lol!

    • http://twitter.com/WaltPartlo Walter Partlo

So is your argument that Moto phones are ONLY 3 months behind?

      • qqq

His argument is that this isn’t an OFFICIAL update from Google and the carriers, and by the time that comes out RAZRs and MAXXs will have official ICS.

        • Diablo81588

          +1

    • cknight91

someone is pissed they can’t port JB yet…

    • billy routh

only a moron calls someone a moron.

      • WCDave

I think it’s wack, to call someone wack.

        • qqq

It’s stupid to call someone stupid.

          • jlsushman

            its gay to be gay

    • Kenneth O’Byrne

OK but in February the RAZR Maxx didn’t have an official update either, I am assuming you are on Verizon considering the site. We will hopefully have and official JB by the end of July. Not that it matters much since once source for the GSM hits AOSP we will have ROM’s either way.

    • Hmm….

Fail. I had official Moto ICS on the 22nd.

  • CJ Tinsley

The devs out did themselves with this. My only complaint is that the WiFi seems to be way to sensitive and low, I can’t hold a connect anymore.

    • bigfire

You can turn off that ‘feature’.

  • fvqu

I would consider doing this if it weren’t such a tedious procedure to install a ROM a from a non-rooted, locked bootloader phone. This a developer phone, and I’m too lazy to install the Android SDK, Java development kit, unlock my bootloader and flash clockwork recovery to my phone just to install a single ROM. I can’t stand using the Android SDK, it’s terrible.

Unless someone can show me an easier procedure to do this, otherwise I will wait another 6 months for the next update.

    • Derek Gelinas

It takes five minutes. All you need is fastboot commands. Boot into fastboot, run fastboot oem unlock. then fastboot flash recovery and you’re done. why you think you need that other crap, i do not know.

    • Dan Treacy

      http://www.wugfresh.com/dev/gnex-root-toolkit/
Downloads everything you need. No typing commands of anything.
The whole process takes maybe 15-20 minutes. It can also restore your phone to a locked factory state.

      • fvqu

Thanks, much better then the other methods.

        • Dan Treacy

Hey guys sorry about the double post, it looked like it wasn’t going to post the first time. You’re welcome and hope the program works out for you both!

      • http://twitter.com/mickmel mickmel

Ooh, that looks pretty slick! I’ll have to give it a shot.

    • Dan Treacy

      http://www.wugfresh.com/dev/gnex-root-toolkit/
This program does all the work for you. Works on PC only I believe. No typing any commands. Just follow the instructions carefully and you’re good to go. Takes maybe 15-20 minutes tops. I’ve used it on 4 different GNex. It can also restore your phone to a locked, non-rooted, “straight out of the box” type state, you know, in case you ever need to take it back to Verizon.

  • David Cohen

Be careful restoring another phones nandroid is not good in that it leads to sync errors with some services (I forgot the specifics). Although I never experienced it, since I never did the nandroid back up from another device, I know there are top android rom developers who haves tested and confirmed this.

As the post recommends backup just in case :-)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matt-Erbeck/767470857 Matt Erbeck

This isnt a nandroid, from what i’ve read it was a gsm nandroid that was ported to toro and turned into a flashable cwr zip

      • David Cohen

I am not an expert or anything, but I assume porting it over and turning it into a flashable zip would not change it much. Just updating a few files to make it compatible with toro, then repackaging it to flash in cwm. Also partially confirmed by the amount of time it took to get out.

Either way, just wanting to give a warning, but also I don’t want to scare people either.

      • http://twitter.com/SJFee Sean Fee

^— What Matt said. Read the rootzwiki thread header. This is legit.

        /also, seems legit fwiw

  • desiman26

Which one seemed to be more stable: JD’s or Team Liquid?

    • PSU_DI

I haven’t tried Team Liquid’s yet but JD’s rom hasn’t given me any issues, except for the poor wifi connection.
NM 2.1 fixed the wifi issues.

      • r0lct

I’m on TL and also experiencing reduced WiFi performance.

    • Droosh

Using JD’s v2 and it is running perfectly. I haven’t tried TL, but I bet it’s exactly the same except that SU requires a seperate flash in TL.

    • desiman26

@PSU_DI:disqus & @Droosh:disqus I just flashed JD’s v2.1 and its working great so far. Very smooth and “buttery.” Thanks!

  • geedee82

Can’t wait to flash this, but I’m gonna wait for DT’s AXIOM Jelly Bean!

  • akazerotime

Jesus on a pony.. that didn’t take long. As soon as i have BAMF 1.3 set up the way I want, it will be nandroid time and will have to take this for a spin.

  • john

I flashed Jelly Bean this morning. Now I know why I got the Nexus phone. Love it so far. I thought I loved ICS, I guess I have a new love. :) Everything is working.

  • panicswhenubered

Wow that was fast. Dev community for Gnex is awesome, but I’m going to wait a couple days for you guinea pigs to test this out for me :)

    • Anthony Vella

It is as stable as a normal OTA, I actually am getting wayyyy better 4G reception now with it, flash away!

      • ApplesNAndroids

…. it uses the same radios…

        • Droosh

Placebo effect I bet. However, with the browser and in general everything smoother it could make 4G feel faster.

  • http://twitter.com/BossAsHell Boss As Hell

This is why I don’t mind the battery life. Runs awesome.

    • quiklives

How bad is the battery life? I know it’s all really subjective, but is it possible the perceived bad battery life is because you can’t put the phone down, or is it significantly bad?

      • duke69111

I have not installed many apps yet, but I have 54 minutes with the screen on (1h12m on battery total) and I am at 63% on 4G. This is what I have been getting with the WIFI on on ICS. Most of the android systems are at 5% or less of the battery use, while the screen is at 89%. They have done a good job it appears so far in reducing android system drain on the battery.

        • quiklives

          Thanks for the thoughtful response!

      • http://twitter.com/BossAsHell Boss As Hell

I meant the phone in general. People always throw out the Maxx name… well this is why I chose Nexus. That’s all I meant really. I’ve been satisfied with battery life since day one. With all the playing I’ve done today I haven’t seen much of a difference from the last AOKP and franco milestones.

      • http://www.facebook.com/Richard.A.McKenzie.III Richard Albert McKenzie III

I’d suggest having an extended battery or even just a second stock battery, I keep my original battery in my wallet(fully charged) at all times for those just in case moments.

      • sonicyoof

I almost always get about 20 hours.

  • Conrad

So do vzw gnex owners lose root by flashing this? Also is it built from the SDK or is it a full rom?

    • Anthony Vella

Its built from the SDK and you do not lose root, I just flashed it an hour ago.

      • Conrad

Awesome I’ll have to try this later!

      • http://twitter.com/humancyborg Human Cyborg

it’s not built from the SDK. the GSM Jellybean OTA update was discovered in Google’s servers, applied to a GSM phone, then ported over to the VZW (toro) version.

      • Droosh

I don’t think so. I think it is from a Nandroid of the OTA and just modified to work for us. FYI – you don’t lose root.

  • Cubanito1967

I know what I will be doing as soon as I get home!

  • http://twitter.com/thehammerofthor Jeff Helget

Running it now. And it is delicious. Should update the article about the wifi issues though until they’re fixed.

  • Johnny

Yesterday was such an awesome day. I upgraded to a nexus, for 75 dollars, from my friends blackberry curve (long story) got a job, Google I/o was insane. And got incredibly drunk and went swimming. One for the history books.

    • http://www.naskaras.com/ Thanassi Karageorgiou

      You sir, Win.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Magicman141 Nick Errington

      Well played, sir.

  • CheeseMcGee

Frick, literally just updated to AOKP Build 40 last night… time to re-flash! This was waaaay faster than I expected! Love the GNex Devs!!!

  • C-Law

Put this on my gnex this morning and I’m loving it. Project butter is amazing. No more live wallpaper lag! And I love the new notification bar. But there is a problem at the moment with weak WiFi signal. Man this phone rocks!

  • jinglesNoob

Hey noob here if I backup my ICS 4.0.4 on my GNex and flash this will I be able to flash back if I have problems?

    • youdoneyo69

Yes that is the point of making a backup :-)

    • TheWenger

Yup, just reboot into recovery and restore your last nandroid.

  • Mike

I’ve been running this since late last-night. Only issue I have is low wifi strength. That’s about it so far, so go try it out! Oh… and Apex Launcher doesn’t work with JB yet.

  • Jeremiah Coleman

Having no issues at all with this reminds me why I bought a Nexus.

  • Sakina Solomon

AAAAND……downloading *sits in indian style and watches download while smiling*

  • James Baranowski

It is impressive and very fast. No issues so far on toro from liquid.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ab-Gar/538974072 Ab Gar

I love this community. This is exactly why we all got a nexus. Because of the awesome devs out there.

  • Matt Gondek

So that’s what my day being made feels like…

    • New_Guy

      Hahaha!

  • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.a.yager Joseph A. Yager

This is when it would be nice to have 4G at work – stupid work

  • dean2359

I read that you lose root by flashing this, tell me it ain’t so

    • http://twitter.com/Ike_Farmer Chris Franzen

      uhhh no

    • James Baranowski

I had root keeper and did not lose root. When I did a complete shut down it did take forever to start… Restart was normal, getting into TWRP and backing up no issues.

    • EricRees

Root is built in already, you’re all set to go :)

    • C-Law

I installed jd’s v2 build. Root and supersu are there

    • dean2359

      Great! Thanks everyone

    • Havoc70

I installed Liquids and the su, still have root

    • Droosh

      It ain’t so

  • http://twitter.com/Ike_Farmer Chris Franzen

    wifi is pretty borked

    • http://twitter.com/savagejeep SavageJeep

      which version?

    • muffnman

Wifi fixes have been posted for both ROMs. Wifi->Advanced->uncheck avoid poor connections. Wireless N 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz connections confirmed working as well.

  • Devon

Holy Crap, cannot wait to get home tonight to flash this….

  • possomcrast1

Quick controls is improved and animated it looks awesome.

  • http://twitter.com/Payaso_113 Payaso

Is there a way to get the look of this notification bar on my galaxy s3?

  • Mark

I am on 4.1 I am just having a problem regaining root on my GSM Galaxy Nexus.

    • http://twitter.com/SJFee Sean Fee

You didn’t flash the CDMA version… did you?

      /you trollin’?

  • e_droid

Very Cool. Can’t wait to see what the community can do when the SIII comes out as there won’t be an OTA for it probably well after the release…

  • http://www.facebook.com/patrick.frutuoso Patrick Frutuoso

that’s why i chose the galaxy nexus
    developer community!!!!

    • https://plus.google.com/110773438514346746273/ tjhrulz

It was done and bug free by 4:30 EST, now that is what I call winning.

  • SeanBello

lot of people saying they boot loop when trying to do a restore and have to battery pull and wipe to fix.

  • derekross

Please note that WiFi only works in close proximity to the access point.

    • possomcrast1

That setting can be switched off.

  • dschneider

    I love this development community.

  • bratliff

Flashed with TWRP no issues.. it’s great. Devs are awesome. Been playing with it all morning.

Whoever “disliked” this comment has no sense of humor. Come on, it’s funny!

Unless you just don’t like looking at strings of nothingness as the first comment in this post.

      Either way…allllllllriiiiiiighhhhht!!

      • r0lct

It’s all the bitter people still waiting for ICS

        • 1MPR0BUS

Yep. Where are all the naysayers who cry and complain in all the other Droid Life posts that having a Nexus is a poor decision. Have fun getting Jelly Bean a year from now. I’ll enjoy my Jelly Bean the day it came out.

          • http://twitter.com/DatBizzy Brandon Hagey

The new OS doesnt make the phone better in my eyes. Its still ugly as shit and has alot of problems. However. To each their own.

          • EvanTheGamer

            Hell yeah!

          • http://twitter.com/ToysSamurai Toys Samurai

That really depends — at this moment, we still don’t know if the CDMA Galaxy Nexus will be updated in mid-July. Verizon Galaxy Nexus users still remember how long it took for them to receive 4.0.4.

        • EvanTheGamer

          Ain’t that the truth.

    • Floyd Gray

So many levels of awesome I can’t describe…”Giggity…All-right.”

  • Destroythanet

    Haha, sweet! GNex FTMFW!!

  • htowngtr

Still has issues. I’ll wait till more official builds come out because right now 4.0.4 is running smooth for me.

    • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

      What issues?

    • http://twitter.com/daniel_ohh Daniel Ogilvie

What issues does it have? I haven’t found any yet.

      • htowngtr

Poor wifi signal, can’t connect to wifi N. I haven’t tried the Liquid ROM yet though.

        • Ben Rice

I have ran both. They both have wifi issues but Franco Kernel helps with wifi strength. Found on page 10 in Liquids thread

        • Tres Waters

wifi issues are fixable. Wifi->Advanced->uncheck avoid poor connections

        • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

That was fixed earlier today on JD’s build. Connected to wireless N right now. It is version 3.

    • http://twitter.com/SJFee Sean Fee

Throw JB on. The you’ll realize what smooth is.

  • KleenDroid

    Boy that took a long time… :)

  • Anthony Vella

Just so you know Eric, your article is partially incorrect, they built JB from the SDK released yesterday, not from the previous GSM build.

    • derekross

jdkoreclipse’s release was built from the GSM OTA from IO.

    • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

JD’s is built from a nandroid of someone at google i/o that had received the OTA(GSM) update. Alternatively people have posted links to googles servers that are the OTA update. This isn’t SDK, its just a device port.

  • kaufkin

    took ‘em long enough. it’s been, what… 1/2 a day? #Irony :-)

  • muffnman

People seem to be having fewer issues with the Team Liquid Vicious build. You might want to make that the primary link (I have no association with Liquid, this is just my observation).
    -MM

  • http://twitter.com/daniel_ohh Daniel Ogilvie

Been running it since last night and no issues yet. They weren’t kidding when they named it project butter.

  • Ben Rice

    IT IS AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • Tim Swann

    is LTE working?

    • chris125

      Usually fully working means everything.

      • SeanBello

except there’s wifi issues and you bootloop when trying to restore.

      • Tim Swann

wanted to make sure since it was originally released for GSM. Thought maybe LTE might not work.

    • http://twitter.com/kittygetwet James Sorensen

      yep

    • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

Fully. I have been running this since last night when JD posted. Jelly Bean is a huge step in the right direction.

Grizz: On V1 the weather card for me showed up all the time intended. With v2, the weather card is gone completely. You seeing the same thing?

        • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

I have my weather card up constantly. Even from using v1 v2 v2.1 and v3.
