Transformer Prime GPS Dongles Begin Arriving at Doorsteps

Transformer Prime owners who have registered with Asus to receive a free GPS dongle are beginning to see the packages arrive at their doorsteps today. The dongle itself has been reported to fix the GPS locating issues that have plagued the Prime tablet, but some would say that the added accessory is quite the eye sore.

Prime owners, have you received your dongle yet?

Cheers Jared!

Mine says “shipped” and it has for three weeks now but I have no intention of ever seeing it I’ve emailed 6 times with no response.

Yep, got mine and it works fine, went from almost zero GPS capability to full GPS.

  • stinkybutt

Got it, tried it, put it back in the box and on the shelf. Worked great but not practical. How do I charge while using the GPS!?! Also will not work with my case. This was very poor planing on ASUS’s part. Overall I still love my prime. Won’t use GPS much if at all anyway.

With the dongle also boost WiFi reception? It is fine in my house but I find that when I’m on the road, say in a hotel, that it is harder to get good reception.

  • Diablo81588

What good is GPS on a WiFi tablet? You’d have to tether it to your phone anyway… I do commend ASUS for taking care of their customers however.

    • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

I use my prime for navigation. The phone does not give GPS data to the tablet I believe.

      • Diablo81588

I meant you need to tether for a data connection outside of wifi coverage. Google navigation does not have built in maps.

        • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

          I see what you mean.

      • delta echoe

The phone does indeed give data, the only thing you need is a rooted phone and to wirelessly tether.  The network location is based off of your phone location.

        • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

          ah. very nice. thanks.

    • socalrailroader

Not with programs like Navigon or Tom Tom, they store the maps and data on the SD Card.

  • Liderc

Who the hell uses the GPS on their tablet, honestly…

    • FortitudineVincimus

me. try it, you’ll like it. even better when it is tethered to the web as well. I have a special dash mount I made.

      • Liderc

But what’s the point, you have to tether it to your phone, which you could use for GPS anyways?

        • socalrailroader

If you use a program like Navigon, which stores the maps on the Micro SD card you don’t need to tether it to your phone.

    • socalrailroader

      I do.

  • cheezer88

    he he he…you said DONGles…lol

  • gimlet72

I registered for one because it free. I don’t use the GPS on my tablet. I will probably not use it

  • http://twitter.com/belogical2 Be Logical

doh!  chrome no go, IE = good :)

    • http://twitter.com/belogical2 Be Logical

i hate when reply doesn’t work.

  • FortitudineVincimus

Its fugly, its huge, you cant charge with it on BUT it works awesome

    • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

I would be MUCH happier if it could f***ing charge. If you use GPS, you are going to need a charger. DUH

      • FortitudineVincimus

word. your limited to 3-5 hour trips (?) with this since no charging. I have a 7 hour drive to AZ this week and I plan to test it.

        • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

have fun getting lost with a dead prime -_________- or a undetected charging one.

  • http://twitter.com/belogical2 Be Logical

I have been trying to register on the site for like a week, still not registered.  Tech support can’t figure it out either.  Lame!

  • http://twitter.com/DerekChuti Derek Chutipisalkul

yup, I got mine yesterday.  wasn’t expecting it to come this quickly.  I actually don’t use gps much if at all on my prime tho… I got my phone for that.  but yes, it’s pretty ugly and you can’t keep it attached to the prime if you want to use the dock or a case.

  • Daniel Archibald33

Hmmmm I guess you should have gotten a Xoom then. it has awesome GPS…BUILT IN!

    • ATBvsBFZ

Hah! I had a Xoom and I prefer my TF201 to it even with a warty GPS dongle!

    • bakdroid

      And 4.0.4 vanilla…

  • PyroHoltz

I don’t even have a prime, but this dongle pisses me off. What a total fail by Asus, IMHO. Maybe prime owners feel differently since the GPS sucks wo/ it.

    • Treknologist

I have to disagree with you.  While I do believe it was a mistake for them to release the tablet with the faulty GPS (which they probably shouldn’t have even added on a WiFi only device to begin with), they have acknowledged the problem, they bothered to make a piece of hardware to address the problem, and they are sending this piece of hardware free of charge to Prime owners.  Owning up to the problem and offering free hardware to address that problem is not a fail, sorry.  Could it have looked better?  Could it have been smaller?  Could it have allowed for connecting to power the Prime?  Sure.  Does it fix the problem.  Absolutely.  By the way, it seems they’ve only shipped the gray dongles.

      • PyroHoltz

They should have provided a way for users with GPS problems to send back their tablet and Asus could retrofit the internals to fix the problem.  Basically what Asus is saying is, “Be and early adopter and if the hardware sucks, sorry.  We’ll send you a band-aid to “fix” it but at least you paid a bunch of cash for it.”

        • Treknologist

Since the problem is not due to the internals but due to the backing (metal) interfering with the signals, sending the tablet back to have the internals changed would not fix the problem.  This has been explained on multiple web sites.

          • PyroHoltz

Fine, send it back to have it function as intended without dongles. You’re completely missing my point here. They should have offered to make it right, WITHOUT additional crap hanging off the device. You wouldn’t have purchased it with the dongle in the first place, so their solution shouldn’t include a dongle.

I assume you own one and are trying to justify to yourself and others, that this doesn’t bother you but in reality, it’s insufficient on Asus’ part.

          • HolyGrail

            I agree with Pyro

        • MyStroPro

They tried to fix it via software numerous times and failed.  IIRC, most assumptions on what happened point to material issues with the back metal plate.

As if ANY manufacture is going to recall an entire product line, refurbish, and redistribute.  The example you are trying to conjure up is the same as a computer in general.  Whoops, faulty capacitor or something of that sort… let me recall every purchased device, refurbish it with a new capacitor, and send it back out.  Yeah right – no business in their right mind would do that; in fact, most would just cancel the line and make a customer purchase a new device.

I’m not saying its right that a less than advertised device with mediocre QA (resulting in this GPS issue I imagine) is a smart decision to put out there for end user sale.  I’m just saying, from a business perspective, what you are suggesting has never been done by any competing company, nor done by any business I can think of.  At least ASUS took the time to fix a free workaround for a bad part that was blocked by a design choice.

Could the workaround be better designed so you could charge the device and use the dongle? Sure.

Oh… and FYI, I don’t own a tablet… any tablet.  I know people that have the iPad, but right now, I’ve no use for a tablet, so I don’t expect to get one anytime soon.
