Samsung GT-i9300 Photos Appear – This Isn’t the Galxay S3, is It?

There are your first ever pictures of a Samsung device tagged with model number GT-i9300, a model number that has been rumored to be the Galaxy SIII a couple of times now. After seeing these shots though, are we all on board with the idea that the i9300 is not the SGS3? This may sound all “Android Elitist,” but this phone is ugly. It looks like a first-gen Galaxy S phone – maybe even on the level of the Fascinate. Now, it does have Ice Cream Sandwich, and yes that’s TouchWiz, on-screen soft keys and a front camera, but where is the “wow” factor? Is that a protective bumper that if removed, will make this phone look uber-sexeh? Eh, maybe.

Shout out your thoughts.

  • fvqu

Touchwiz is still ugly as ever, but i’m glad to see the virtual buttons atleast.

  • Xevin

Are we seeing the same phone? Looks like a standard slab phone to me. I think that’s everyone’s problem. Its not something completely different and amazing.

Also please stop complaining about SOFT buttons people. Its a simple software mod to rearrange them to your liking.

calm down folks, there’s no way GS3 will have this low resolution:
    http://androidcommunity.com/samsung-gt-i9300-appears-in-uaprof-not-the-galaxy-s-iii-20120217/

  • joecmwu

    Fake

  • speraider430

All of those dumb zero edge renders have made you believe that was even possible as an option for the SGSIII LOL

  • MrEnglish

Oh God. If this is it, I’m going iPhone for sure. That’s just FUGLY.

  • http://twitter.com/kirilv Kiril

Is anyone actually surprised? Rumors aside, we should have all known that this is what the phone looks like. Honestly, it is a tweaked version of the Nexus (based on looks). This was already a given.

The real thing we need to start rumors about is the implementation of ICS skins. Since Google required Holo to be on all phones, how long will it be for us to see a simple hack — or at least a ROM — that allows the phone to use Holo instead of TouchWiz? This should be much easier than in the past.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1025116830 Mike Stratton II

LOL. Sorry to be a bit up front, but my god is that phone hideous. I’m betting on prototype, because god help them if this is real. Wireless charging or not, people do care about looks. This photo is really making me like my Nexus a bit more XD.

  • BrandoHD

Hopefully this is just a picture of an early prototype, or maybe a device to test the software and not the final hardware design………….hopefully

  • Rocketjrb

The ugly store called…. their running out of you!

  • 0silentmage0

It actually looks like it might be in some kind of case. Not that ugly either. And stop hating on the fascinate. It is a nice looking phone and it actually has working ICS unlike a lot of the “Top End” Phones out there

  • r0lct

It looks like a GNex with a bumper.

    • Maleficent

It looks like any other phone with a bumper.

  • http://www.tabletsonair.com/review-samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1/ Samsung tablet

Never improve in design. And Yes.. It ugly!

  • Beefcake

Jeebus Kellex! It’s Galaxy not Galxay.

  • TheUI

They could at least shop the notification bar too.

  • Dominick_7

Wait.. Would this have s memo WITHOUT having a stylus? Maybe they’re hiding that it has a stylus? The screen resolution doesn’t look that high.. There’s too much Bezel and its too narrow to be 5.3.. I really hate ics on screen buttons. Hate. Makes any added screen real estate meaningless.

  • MKader17

I wonder what phone it is sitting next to in that first pic, because ti is massive compared to that phone.

  • FortitudineVincimus

    “where is the “wow” factor”?

the specs man the specs. it’s about the specs!

some of you beotching about the look of phones.. pathetic.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

The only pathetic thing I see here is your comment.

  • http://twitter.com/Defenestratus Defenestratus

The i-9300’s specs were revealed to have a non-HD display so this looks like confirmation that the 9300 != the S3.

  • RadicalPie

Hopefully after the fighter moto can put out something awesome and original cause I’m not looking at this thing for two years. Now I’m just waiting on that Google nexus tablet info
    .

  • RadicalPie

LMAO touchwiz. The phone looks soooooooo. Boring . Kinda reminds me of the front of the D3

  • bogy25

If this is the real SGSIII the this is NOT my next phone – UGLY as hell!  Total disappointment

  • http://twitter.com/JKingDaRuler Jay Kingsley

It appears that Android fans still want that iPhone killer ..Lol

    • ddevito

      No…we already have it. Thanks.

    • Droidzilla

Wow, that’s a really good picture! Are you a professional photographer? The old-photo look is totally fresh and interesting and talented and not like a hipster using Instagram at all. Kudos!

      • tvjrc603

        haha, nicely done.

    • bogy25

We do already have an i p h on e killer in many forms – we are evolving, moving on and want the absolute best looking and functional device we could have.  That is the beauty of Android – it can be many things unlike your crapple device that will look the same 20 years from now.  Change with the times – evolve – leaving you behind apple lover…

    • pj

The iphone killer dropped on Nov 6th 2010. Everything Iphone doesn’t, Droid does! We’ve been looking back at you in our mirror ever since.

  • http://twitter.com/lancec50 Lance Cokel

I bet that is a rubber bumper on the phone. They want to hide how sexy the phone is going to be. They are trying to disappoint us so when it does come out we are like holy sh*t that is a sexy beast. Can’t wait to see the specs on it.  It would be nice if Samsung would let us disable TW and run vanilla ICS.  I’m sure it will be rooted within 24hrs of release and have ROM’s within 5 days.  I can’t wait.

  • Sam

this could easily just be a hardware prototype meant to test/show the viability of the chipset and other internal hardware.

  • Butters619

Well looks like I won’t be getting a Samsung phone this summer

  • Kon-Kon Chao

This better not be the GS3… but if it is at least I won’t feel obligated to upgrade my Galaxy Nexus I just got.  Save some monies.

  • Flip74k

If this is the sgIII. Such a disappointment!!

  • Jeff Tycz

well the edge does look like that one leaked “leaked” photo a few weeks back so i wouldnt be surprised

  • r0lct

Don’t worry, I’m sure that’s just the Verizon version since they demand unique versions from oems. The others will look much better.

    • Djyosnow

Sad but realistic. When is vzw gonna pull there heads out of there a$$?

      • hkklife

Sad thing is, I would still probably buy such an ugly and unsexy device IF it hit VZW with the rumored specs (ceramic back, ICS, wireless charging, 4.8″ screen etc). Fortunately, that will not be a decision I will have to make because Verizon is unlikely to get anything but low-end and midrange 800×480 Samsung phones running Gingerbread for the remainder of 2012.

  • martyjones

    Holy bezel.

  • http://twitter.com/TriadX1 Brad Sando

I am still trying to figure out what value switching the order of the soft buttons has?  Just to confuse users?

    • MKader17

Manufacturers realize that there is no way to really differentiate themselves so they just use fragmentation to stand out.

    • TheUI

I for one, love teh choice….

      Hurrrrrrrr

  • chrisbox29

Kinda resembles the leaked version that made the round yesterday… specifically the bumper edges.

  • http://www.JWesCampbell.com/ Wes Campbell

    looks like an iphone…

  • fiveHellions

I hate to say it but I think the SGS III is turning into the iphone 5(4s). Alot of hype and alot of fake renderings and in the end everybody will be disappointed even though it will be a good solid phone.

Too many of the renderings have absolutely zero bezel which I don’t think samsung has the tech to release a mass production device with that yet. All the rendering look too perfect and to be honest samsung doesn’t make the best looking phones. So in the end I think there will be alot of disappointed android users.

  • TheUno

    That’s the G2x

    • TheDos

      wrong, thats the G2y

  • KOBALT

I wanna know what’s next to it in the left picture….

  • http://twitter.com/ToysSamurai Toys Samurai

Even if we take out that “protective bumper”, it’s still boring. The whole damn design is boring. Among all the Android phones releasing in the next couple months, the only design that stands out from the rest is the Xperia from Sony, but it will ship with Gingerbread and only has Dual-Core CPU.

  • http://www.joshbroton.com KillaPenguin

Why do Android manufacturers insist on messing with system button order?

    FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

    • riteshk

Well, that has been the button order for all Samsung Android phones (the intl ones at least) for as long as I know. What’s so surprising?

      • Guest

No. The back and open app buttons are reversed on this thing.

        • riteshk

          Reversed in reference to what?

          • Guest

            For instance http://www-bgr-com.vimg.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Samsung-Galaxy-Nexus-2.jpg

          • riteshk

I said, all Samsung phones (not talking about stock or Nexus) have had the buttons in this order. Did you not read that?

          • Guest

            Touchjizz isn’t Samsung, it’s just a skin.

          • riteshk

What sense does that make? Its a skin by Samsung and all Samsung devices have always had physical/touch buttons in that order.

          • El Big Chris

I actually like that button order. on my custom rom i changed them to match the articles’ picture. it makes sense for me to use on the GNex.

          • Hanswee

i suppose it does make sense though.  its a wide phone , and most people are right handed and use back more often than multitask

          • Trey Fordham

I’m right handed, but left-handed with my phone. What’s wrong with me?

          • whosthegoss

Reversed in reference to the Galaxy Nexus for one.

          • http://twitter.com/Drweird13 Brian McCann

            Stock

          • tyguy829

The only phone Samsung has released so far with ICS, the galaxy nexus….I mean come on, its not like a Samsung vs. HTC button difference (which is still annoying), but between two of Samsung’s own phones! Frustrating….

          • RoadsterHD1

I agree and see your point. Both Samsung’s and button order does not follow. Since these are not fixed and are in the image panel, can’t the order be put any way you want it? Depending on the ROM?

          • Josh Nichols

The nexus is a Google device.
This phone is a Samsung device.

Both are made by Samsung, but there is a huge difference.

          • riteshk

            Exactly.

          • vitriolix

By that logic, Samsung has made *no* softbutton only, ICS phones then.  The only one on the market set the new platform UI for button order.  Samsung is just randomly mixing them up for pointless “differentiation”.

          • riteshk

God you’re thick! No, Samsung hasn’t made *any* softbutton-only, ICS phones yet. The Nexus is a Nexus is a Nexus, no matter who made it! What’s so hard to understand about that? All Samsung phones (not counting the Nexus as a Samsung phone for this argument because its a Nexus, got it?) have had the buttons in that order, soft or not. ICS or not, the Menu, Home and back buttons have always been that way on all explicitly-Samsung phones. I already made that clear in my previous comment, but you’re having difficulty understanding.

    • Jdstell

OEM skins remind me of that SouthPark episode where Spielberg and Lucas keep raeping Indiana Jones and storm troopers.

      • angermeans

Lol. Thanks now every time I think of OEMs skins Im going to think of the poor android robot getting raped by Samsung, moto, and htc. It (in my opinion) fits though.

      • tvjrc603

pretty soon we can add michael bay raping the ninja turtles…

    • picaso86

In addition to the UGLY phone…

    • Binglut9

Exactly why did they change the order? Are all these companies really this stupid?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1025116830 Mike Stratton II

      Agree.

I figured that for once, the default layout in ICS made sense, therefore they wouldn’t need to mess with it. Guess i was wrong..

    • Austinrgoebel

I know i hate that i get use to using one set and then get a new phone and have to get use to the order again, they all need to stay in the same order

      • http://ThisWeeksBeats.com Deez

Yeah, getting used to something once every 2 years is a real hassle!

        • LionStone

Chuckle…yea, almost as bad as griping about the power/wake button position. We are humans people, we can adapt!

        • feztheforeigner

Because everyone buys their phones in two year spans…

          • http://ThisWeeksBeats.com Deez

So you get a new phone every year and you’re complaining about minor design decisions?

          • feztheforeigner

I’m not complaining about anything…at all…and roughly every three months or so btw (I’m an android developer)

          • http://ThisWeeksBeats.com Deez

well then why did you respond to my reply which was directed at those who *are* complaining about this?

Also, if you’re a dev why would you buy non-dev phones in the first place? Or at all expect manufacturers to cater to the minuscule dev market?

          • feztheforeigner

All I commented on was that not everyone buys phones on two year spans. That was it. Nothing more.

And developers do enjoy testing their products on things other than the few developer devices (especially those that are widely used such as the Evo 4G or Galaxy S II).

          • Noyfb

It’s Called Force of Habit. It takes a while to get used to doing something different that you have done every day all day for 2 years in a row, ok?

    • jeremy626

i think the back button on the right side is better for righties..
besides, Samsung usually had the back button on the right except the Nexuses.

    • vitriolix

      Don’t buy skinned phones.  Period.

  • KOBALT

Maybe the thing is like 5.5″ and that’s all it has going for it

  • ddevito

    Touchwiz is fugly

    • riteshk

Isn’t that sentence too old now? We all know that.. stop repeating it like a poorly programmed bot!

      • ddevito

        Okay. YOU’RE ugly.

        Happy now?

        • riteshk

          Says the stupid bot!

        • sc0rch3d

          @riteshk:disqus
          @ddevito:disqus

both of you have obscenely large, round, ugly heads :)

          • riteshk

            LOL..

    • StupidPhoneRumor

…and this phone is ugly. My god… if this is the SGIII, major fail-o-rama there.

    • PC_Tool

TouchWiz is gorgeous…  Running TW4 launcher, clock app, and calculator on my G’Nex.

      • ddevito

        different strokes for different folks…

but I, Sir, think you’re nuts.

      • http://twitter.com/kaiyel1 Kyle Miller

How? Where did you get it at?

      • angermeans

Ummm I’m speechless. I won’t allow any touchwiz (or any skins) near my precious galaxy nexus. Also touchwiz is a lot of things, but “beautiful” is def not one of them. I guess that’s the beauty of android tho as we all have different tastes and luckily many options.

        • LionStone

          So you’re really saying… TW = Android = Beauty! :-)

      • jeremy626

TW is fine compared to Blur or LG’s skin. sometimes TW adds a lotta functions too.

  • Nideda24

Doesn’t seem to have a very high resolution screen.

  • ddevito

The strangest part to me is that it’s running 4.0.3 – which was designed for tablets wasn’t it??

    • PSU_DI

no, 4.0.3 is the version that Google released the source code for, that’s why most build for OEMs are using it.  It is also the version that was released to the TMobile Nexus S but was stopped due to a bug.

      • ddevito

I guess Sammy doesn’t have access to pre-released Android code after all. Weak.

    • sc0rch3d

the beauty of ICS is its ability to run on tablets and phones. i have a tablet and phone on 403 (both hacked of course)

    • Tommy Thompson

      no

  • KOBALT

    Wow. Glad I’m anti-Samsung.

    • Paul

      +1

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

    It looks poopy.

  • riteshk

NO EFFING WAY… This is not the GS III but it might be a test device for the actual GS III …

  • mikesuds

Sure, could be the GS3, but if so, gotta be a test kit of some sort, perhaps with all the internals and generic outers?

  • Nnbadboy

    Completely FUGLY

  • Bailey Joshua83

    Crazy.

  • John

Absolutely NOT the SGIII.  It’s either a mid-level ICS phone for euro/asia, or an ICS development phone.
