Nova Launcher Updated – Scrollable Folders, Improved Responsiveness

Our favorite 3rd party launcher based on Ice Cream Sandwich called Nova Launcher, has just received another useful update. In addition to a few minor bug fixes and folder fixes, you can now have more than 16 apps in any given folder with the ability to scroll through them. Wicked.

If you already have the app, go in to Nova settings and hit “Check for updates.” If you have a device running ICS and want to give Nova Launcher a try, then head to the forum post where you can download it, here.

Cheers Justin!

I’m currently using  the Cobolt transparent theme which allows for your wallpaper to go all the way down under the soft keys.   With this new Nova update it’s thrown off the image so that it only goes half way through the soft keys now.   Otherwise it’s a great update.

Anyone have re-draws with Nova?  Sometimes I constantly get OG Droid like re-draws after exiting an app or the browser.  It takes upwards of 5-10 secs for the home screen to load sometimes and it’s very annoying.  No reason it should be doing that with 1GB RAM.  It even still does it after modding the build.prob file to lock the launcher in memory.

Putting apps into folders doesn’t seem very forward thinking to me, sounds just like BlackBerry that’s supposed to be such an “out-of-date” OS that’s been around forever…

    • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

It’s quite useful. All my Games are in a Games folder. I have a *lot* of games.

      • Herchtune

It is useful, I switch back and forth with my BB every now and then for a change and that I like that I can throw all like apps in a folder to save home screen space, it just seems funny to me that everyone runs away from BB’s now and folders just arent a new groundbreaking idea .

        • Anonymous

Nobody said they were new and groundbreaking or that BB didn’t get ANYTHING right… folders in android were inevitable one way or another, and I like them.

Am I the only one that REALLY wants continuous vertical scrolling back in the app drawer?

    • Michael Forte

You know, I used to love the vertical scrolling with the 3D effect, but after using the ICS app drawer for a while now, I don’t miss it anymore.

      • Anonymous

Fair enough.  But I’ve been using ICS for a few weeks now, and I simply can’t stand the page-by-page horizontal scrolling.  It’s neither smooth nor intuitive.  It’s one reason I hate iOS.  I have about 169 apps, and at 20 apps/page, that’s 9 pages.  So if I want to get to an app towards the end, say Yelp or Zedge, I have to flick left 8 times.  It’s ludicrous.  With continuous vertical scrolling, I could flick up just once to shoot to the end of my apps list.  Easy peasy.  I prefer vertical scrolling to horizontal, but if ICS is gonna stick with horizontal, at least give me the option for continuous scroll.

        • Balls

          search for it, dont scroll

          • Anonymous

A quick swipe will always be SO MUCH quicker than typing.  Searching isn’t much better than paging, from a speed-of-access point of view.

          • Noyfb

i’m still holding out for diagonal scroll or a spherical ball that holds all my apps

        • Ron

Or you could just make a shortcut for it on one of your homescreens

          • Anonymous

I could, but I’ve always kept a clean homescreen.  Just a couple of vital widgets, nothing more:  See this: http://imgur.com/C7DJ6

        • Jslafarr

LCD density. Can probably fit 40 apos if u bring it down to 240. Makes everything look wayy better.

    • Anonymous

Nope, you are not the only one. I HATE the horizontal “pages”

    • Bret Farris

That is the only thing keeping me from using Nova. I thought it would get added soon enough but, I’m tired of waiting and plan to uninstall it soon. I’ve been using Go Launcher since I got my Nexus but, I don’t like the way they do folders. So, I’ve been experimenting with ADW and am liking it’s implementation the best so far. The vertical scrolling in the app drawer is the only thing killing Nova for me.

  • Anonymous

Do they have noval launcher beta 15 invisible folder zip yet?

    • John

      He’s working on it now

  • Blumenaj

Wow. Definitely a notice in responsiveness. +1. Nova is doing it right.

    • Blumenaj

It does say for specific phones…Im on a Galaxy Nexus

    • John

I’m noticing a slight improvement too

    • Anonymous

I just wish he’d fix the vertical spacing in the dock bar. Squashed dockbars are not easy to use.

  • http://twitter.com/samthomas86 Sam Thomas

I dont know if anyone else is seeing this, but the app drawer is awfully laggy. Really big step backward if you ask me. Not enough to abandon, but I would rather go back to the last release.

    • John

I still have all the previous apks of you’d want 14 again

    • Anonymous

Bummer. Mine is smooth as silk.  Did you try rebooting?  I’ve found that sometimes that heals certain lag issues.

  • http://twitter.com/Bigsike3 Matt Sikon

Not till I heard this was going to allow more than 16 apps in a folder did I give this a shot. My impression fast simple and functional. A+ good job guys

FOLDERCEPTION :))=)) I aprove your message!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

So can anyone say if it is actually faster now?  I’m using Apex Launcher right now because I feel like it is more responsive.

    • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

Definitely a performance boost. I just updated and IMMEDIATELY noticed a difference, no OC going on either.

    • Anonymous

does apex do folders the same as nova?

  • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

This deleted some of my homescreen customizations. feh.
EDIT: it just rearranged my folders.

  • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

Oh god. Now I will have one HUGE ASS FOLDER.

    • Rampagedeluxe

      You mean an app drawer?

      • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

I mean folder… Scrolling folders means more apps in each folder. I am really lazy and will put them all in one folder.

  • http://twitter.com/tgwaste tgwaste

*sigh* still no swipe-down notification gesture..  *fail*

    • Anonymous

because swiping down at the top of the phone is difficult?

         yep.

      • http://quiklives.tumblr.com quiklives

        This really cracked me up.

    • Lakerzz

just set up a Nova action short cut. You can do that for screen previews and more…and customize the icon with a ‘blank’ icon to keep you’re home screen nice and clean.

    • KellyW

tgwaste:  *sigh* still no swipe-down notification gesture..  *fail*”

Then you should put your mad coding skills to work and develop a launcher with all the sweet features you want.  If you go through life just whining, saying fail and waiting for others to do things for you then you have a rough road ahead junior.

    awesome, doing it right now

Chrome 2 phone / Chrome to mobile.

And kimir was pointing out why Chrome to Phone is not obsolete or superceded by the features in Chrome.  It was a valid response.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Tim-o-tato

I have basically everything installed because we need to know when apps get updates so we can be first to inform our readers ;-)

  • Michael Forte

Sweet! I was wanting an option for more than 16 apps in a folder because of so many games. Nova Launcher is awesome. Just need an option to hide apps from the app drawer and it’ll be perfect.

    • Anonymous

just swipe em to the left or right, you can make the divider bar disappear and have multiple app drawers

      • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

        what…?

        • Anonymous

are you talking about the very bottom or just above it, just above it you can have multiple screens that you can swipe left or right just like your home screens, if your talking about the very bottom there is a way to do it but its a pain, go to xda and look for [double x] make your screen full

          • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

App drawer is the thing with ALL of your apps. The circle with the squares inside.

          • Anonymous

got it, not sure why anyone would want to hide the apps there though, why?

          • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

Used to be for bloatware, now I guess for things like Latitude and Places (apart of Maps but you have to disable Maps to get rid of them [not prefered]).

          • Anonymous

I was thinking dock for some reason, doh!

          • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

            No problem :)

    • Michael Forte

Just realized something else needed, a way to make a batch folder, takes too long to add one app at a time.

      • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

I have auto add shortcut on. Then, every time i download an app, it goes on my desktop and it makes me file it away in one of my folders.
I need the ability to combine folders.

        • Anonymous

I would really like folders within folders within folders within folders!

          • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

    • elbarto

you can deactivate your apps and they will disappear in the drawer. just go into settings ->apps and click the app you want to deactivate, you should see a button who is called “deacivate”

      • Jslafarr

        Disable

        • elbarto
