baconreader Receives Sizable Update for Ice Cream Sandwich Devices – Scrollable Widget, Beam Support, Hardware Acceleration and More

If you are into reddit and Android, you have likely heard of baconreader. It’s made by OneLouder Apps, the same crew that produced 1Weather, SportCaster, and TweetCaster to name a few. Their reddit app though, is the go-to for the service. It received a mention-worthy update this afternoon that brought with it a scrollable and resizable widget, NFC Beam support, hardware acceleration, subreddit widgets that refresh depending on frequency, and more. It’s mostly Ice Cream Sandwich related, but you won’t complain, will you?

Here is the full list:

  1. Widget points to selected subreddit, and refreshes at selected frequency
  2. Widget supports scrolling and resizing on Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich devices
  3. Supports Beam on NFC-enabled Ice Cream Sandwich devices
  4. Supports Hardware Acceleration
  5. Posts, widgets, external images and gifs, and comments load more quickly due to component rewrites
  6. Widget points to the appropriate story in the application
  7. If you like what you see, please consider changing your rating in the Android Market!

So someone help me out here. This may seem weird to some, but I’ve never used Reddit. Mainly because I don’t really even know what it is or what it can do for me. Why should I use Reddit and why is it great?

Reddit is essentially a site run by user submitted material that is upvoted and downvoted by other users.  Most people just look at the front page, which generally consists of stuff from the most popular subreddits like pictures, videos, technology and world news.  In order to get the true experience you need to create a user name and customize which subreddits you subscribe too.  I subscribe to a lot, but the ones I frequent most are r/galaxynexus, r/cfb (college football), r/diy (do it yourself projects), r/android and r/pics.

Reddit is Fun, Baconreader, F5, Reddit News, Reddionic (which I just installed today)…. how many reddit apps do we really need?! Choice is good… but this is getting out of hand.

    I prefer Reddit News.

  • Liuzerus87

I prefer both Reddit News and Reddit Is Fun to this, although the widget and hardware acceleration are nice adds.

Reddit is Fun is exponentially better for basic browsing.

They’ve said that the new UI update is coming soon, but right now they’re working on bug fixes and other improvements.  They still need to fix the “when you scroll sometimes it registers as a swipe,” but other than that the updates are great and it’s still my daily driver for Reddit.
