YouTube Preview Image

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus.  Receiving so much love.  Feels good, right?  The newest feature we are going to boast about is a touch enabled version of ClockworkMod Recovery which is available for the Galaxy Nexus.  It is still in Alpha (Beta now), but is completely usable and available for download.

Update:  Beta 1 has been released. Updated link below.

Download:  cwm_touch_alpha2_toro.img cwm_touch_beta1_toro.img

Installation instructions:

  1. Download .img file.
  2. Place .img file in tools folder of your Android SDK.
  3. Open up a command prompt in your tools folder.
  4. Write out the following commands then hit enter.

adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery cwm_touch_beta1_toro.img

You should now have the newest touch-enabled recovery on your device.  If you want to go back to regular ClockworkMod, you can easily do so by flashing it through ROM Manager.  Have fun!

Via: RootzWiki

Cheers Whiteboy7thSt!

  • Bigwavedave25

Sweet, this works great so far!  Just flashed in the latest beta5.img

*** If anyone is using WindowsXP and is having issues with the command prompt, changing the directory, etc….
Just copy “cmd.exe” and paste into your SDK Tools folder and double click to launch (usually located in c:windowssystem*).  This will preload the directory to the proper location for you ***

Verizon told me yesterday, Jan 10 – that the baseband should be 1515.10.  I had called to complain about bad reception, and I was told the new baseband was meant to fix that.  He told me to go into a local Verizon store to force the update.  My phone was rooted, so that wasn’t an option.  Where do I get 1515.10?

  • Josh Groff

Still not MadMaxx’s Touch screen recovery from ARHD, pretty cool either way.

  • Acniehaus04

That is pretty fantastic. I can’t tell you how many times I disabled the flipping back button trying to scroll

  • dom

My recovery won’t stay.I have to reflash with from manager just to use it. Any thoughts on how to make it permanent?

    • Jeremy Morrison

      There’s a how to under root/galaxy nexus/how to root here in droid-life.com

  • Anonymous

Oh, guys, you should probably change the instructions to the beta’s filename. I figured it out on my own anyway, and I think most will, but it’s still probably worth fixing.

Yay, the day after I finally take the plunge and root my Nexus!

  • Honay toad

i am unlocked and rooted but not on custom rom and i dont have cw permanent so each time i reboot the phone i lose recovery and have to reflash.  can i still install this?

  • El El Kool J

works like a charm.. lovely mods.. why I love you so dearly Android.. :P

Is anyone else like me waiting for a stable version of CM9 released to my GNex before I root or unlock??

    • Fillyo

Ummm…no. Axiom has significantly improved battery life, no reason to wait, it’s a few clicks.

      • http://www.twitter.com/nblufire12 Nathan Patel

Axiom is better than CM9 will be…?

        • http://twitter.com/shaywasserman Shay Wasserman

maybe, but it’s definitely better than stock

          • http://www.twitter.com/nblufire12 Nathan Patel

Oh wow I did not know that, Kellex hasn’t been giving it much love. Is it better than Kang right now?

    • chmcclellan

      No, and you shouldn’t either.

Not sure if you are coming from CM7 on the OG Droid, but winner00 who did great work on that is now compiling a CM9 alpha rom for G-Nex.

I’m sure CM9 when officially released will be my daily driver, but G-Nex development now is really exciting, lots of different roms being released almost daily to try.  I think when the heavy hitters, CM, MIUI, Liberty, Pete, etc have stable roms a lot of this wild-west like development will calm down.

      • http://www.twitter.com/nblufire12 Nathan Patel

Yup i came from og d1 cm7 and loved it

Im going to flash it i just dont know if i should wait for stable ir just go with alpha

Who else is making roms right now? Ive heard of kang and axiom but thats about it

        • chmcclellan

winner’s build has been totally stable for me (except where I have freaked it out, undervolting a little too much, etc)

kejar (half of the liberty team along w/ jrummy) has GummyNex which he bills as a pre-liberty.  Ran that for a while and also found it stable.  He is not including CM’s notification power widget hence the switch to winner’s build

vicious has a MIUI build, but it will take me a while to get tired of AOSP roms  with ICS being totally new.  Also, unlike winner and kejar’s roms, the miui build seems to be having problems w/ USB mount/storage.

          • http://www.twitter.com/nblufire12 Nathan Patel

so this kang guy from cm isnt as good as winners?

Edit lol wow kang is the rom winner posted lol im gonna go for it tonight thanks

  • Honay toad

if you want to go back to regular do you just flash latest recovery in clockwork?  what if you dont have cw set perm yet?

  • MrChips

Works like a friggin’ charm.  Love the bigger font too!

  • http://twitter.com/BodyMarks BodyMarks

Nice, thanks for the new features. Took me a minute to realize that there were soft touch keys at the bottom of the screen (right where they should be). ha

  • richard melcher

update the instructions to reflect the new “beta” file plz, this may confuse some users just following the instructions.

  • JoeInMo

Works great.  Good job.  Solves the key bounce problem and the text is actually large enough to read. I appreciate it.

  • Skyskioc

Does this put that little extra search button on the right At the bottom of the screen

    • JoeInMo

      No.

      • Skyskioc

Thanks for the quick response. can someone tell me how to install it I am running Axium 2.3 ?

        • Skyskioc

Sorry I mean that little extra button on the bottom right how do we install that or get that

  • BTGGTR1

This is awesome, the volume button was driving me crazy. This works like a charm.

  • Bro Is Mad

I’m not trying to divert the attention off of this particular post, but would someone please post me a link showing step-by-step on how to root my GNex on a Mac. I’ve looked all over the internet for hours. Tried different stuff. Tried the ‘easy’ one that was posted on here yesterday on my PC, and then on my friends PC, and nothing will work. I just need something that is actually step by step. NOTHING that I’ve found yet is actually step-by-step. Please help. Thanks!Like

You should be able to do it it via adb. But I don;t have a GNex, so can’t say for absolute certain.

    • Fillyo

      Try this:

      http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366806

There are many step by step guides for PCs, it does help to know how to use ADB

  • Anonymous

noob question but im fairly new to this
ok so every time i try to back up or go into recovery
i get a error something stooped responding and it basically fails

  • http://twitter.com/unstableapps Nathan Grebowiec

Beta 1 is already out ;)

  • PC_Tool

Some ROMS are having issues with this.  The build-prop assert line in teh updater script is messing with the recovery and producing a Status 7 assert failure.

Removing the line from the updater script has been reported to solve the issue though.  Not sure if a change to teh recovery would do it as well or not.

    • http://twitter.com/unstableapps Nathan Grebowiec

I just released beta 1.  It fixes this.

      • PC_Tool

Awesome.  Grabbing it now (or as soon as I hit “Post”…)

  • http://twitter.com/BobbyAndAnn Bobby

Thank you, absolutely LOVE this!!!  Thank you also for increasing the font size, my old eyes were having a difficult time with those little letters.  You rock!

  • df2rools

im sad that you didn’t yell at the end of the video WEDROIDLIFEPEACE! =/

  • Christopher Riner

duuuuuuude nice.  I love goodies.  Ive been wanting to put a different version of cwm on my nexus anyways, my 5.5.0.4 is acting a little screwy lately

  • http://profiles.google.com/jeremyrreger Jeremy Reger

This is Exactly what I need, going through ClockworkMod always takes me twice as long because im coming from the Thunderbolt and the buttons are switched.

  • bob

WTF? this post was about the cwm touch… not piss poor signal. Does anyone know if this is strickly for the nexus, or can it be flashed to other rooted devices as well?

  • Anonymous

is it possible to do those commands through the mac terminal?

  • Bert336

love it, definitely need a better font :P

You know I rarely comment on this site but I just have to say Mctypething is annoying as hell. What is his deal.  Does he hate on the Nexus? Or is it all Android? Or is he mad because he has a feature phone?

      what’s up? u mad bro?

Just to clarify we put this in TOOLS not Platform-Tools? Because when I was rooting I put everything (fastboot) in Platform-Tools. Thanks!

  • http://profiles.google.com/cvananden Chris VanAnden

I noticed that it was worded that way in the unlock instructions which certainly helped. I had recently reinstalled windows and the SDK and didn’t notice that adb moved at first =/. It was a facepalm moment.

  • Levi Wilcox

Why didn’t you guys tell people how add the sdk paths to the PATH environment variable?

    • Stating El Obvious

Because Android users are far smarter then iPhone users and don’t need instructions.  Geniuses buy Android, morons buy iPhones.  Oh, wait a minute…

      • Levi Wilcox

Just think it’s odd that they’re always telling people to put stuff in the sdk folder…

      • Christopher Riner

        haha

Would it make whiney people like yourself focus their negativity elsewhere?

If so, they just might consider it.

      • Anonymous

lol, not negative, just pointing out the fact that 85% of the posts on this website have been Nexus related since the beginning of December, I could actually care less (Just bought a new car over the weekend, so that’s been occupying my time) what he posts.. Just thought I would get a laugh from someone, and apparently did from the Associate Editor of the website. lol.

        • Ishbudigital

“bought a new car over the weekend, so that’s been occupying my time”
Uh cant tell its been occupying yourr time because your on here constantly whining about G-Nex whiners. Dont like it BYE. Meanwhile uh any new G-Nex posts?

And the New York Times should change their name or stop reporting on news outside of New York?

      • EC8CH

        LOL

        • Anonymous

The New York Times is called such because it is located in New York, not because it is intended to only report on New York stories. This site is called Droid Life because it (at least used to) report on Android stories. Your comparison is completely idiotic.

          • EC8CH

Your constant complaining about the topics covered by an internet blog…. that’s what’s idiotic.

          • Anonymous

And you’re a sheep. Maybe in due time you will learn to interpret things on your own instead of taking whatever drivel is thrown your way. If this site all of a sudden thought the Nexus sucked, so would you.

          • EC8CH

Yeah… maybe I should go read an internet blog that I disagree with instead so I can act like an assclown in their comments.

          • Anonymous

I know you agree with the blog, so that part is wrong. But yes, you do act like an assclown in the comments, so you have that part covered already. When you learn how to think for yourself, you can then decide whether you agree or disagree with the site.

          • zombiedroid83

Droid-Life was called Droid-Life because it was all about the OG Droid dummy. They even started an Android-Life site for other android stuff. But being that the G-Nex is the next best thing since the Droid, that’s why it’s getting all the love. So, suck it sideways.

          • Anonymous

it was actually for the “DROID” branded line of products, not JUST the OG Droid.
Also the Galaxy Nexus (I refuse to call it ‘G-Nex’) is simply the best phone i have ever had the pleasure of owning.

Now isn’t that just so convenient…

Dude clockwork has been on how many devices now? Yeah I might not be able touch mine but it works great none the less. Whats great though is that all this work will become standard for future devices.. I get it, its the newest device.. and will be all the rage until after CES where there is a new toy to drool over.

Your husband has had how many girlfriends before you Erica? Exactly, the G-Nex rocks and your upset you still have a iphone 3gs. Its okay the iphone 5 is on its way next year. 2013. Could this alpha somehow brick your phone? CWM is so important to android I don’t know if i would trust it with my backups…

    • http://www.droid-life.com Tim-o-tato

This is CWM, just with touch-enabled controls.

      • Anonymous

I know. But it’s an alpha. Alphas crash and have major issues usually.

Having the same issues with the non-touch version but I figured it out. To get to “install zip from sdcard” you have to press up once, down twice then up again then down three times then up twice….

    • Anonymous

Same, as well. Plus, the “Back” button somehow keeps getting disabled. Not sure why though.

      • Chasm31

Press volume up and down at same time to renable.

    • Chrisriner84

I know exactly what you’re talking about. By the way, I’m on the go right now, is it possible to flash this one through regular clockwork to get it up and running?

      • Anonymous

No. You need to flash it with flash boot.

  • No

New computer so i had to reinstall the SDK, users should note adb is no longer in the tools folder, but the platform-tools folder. Take note Kellex!

    • http://www.droid-life.com Tim-o-tato

      Noted :)

      • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Yeah we should probably start saying “put it wherever your adb.exe and fastboot.exe files are.” In our bootloader unlocking instructions we listed out both Platform-Tools and Tools because some have had the SDK installed forever and some just did it, so they definitely differ. :)

        • Scott Webber

I think we should train people to put the adb.exe dir on their system path so they can put the files wherever they want.

          • JMonkeYJ

or just teach people to use full paths…then it doesn’t matter where either the executable OR the other file is! :)

  • Highwire

Sweet, can’t wait to try it!

  • trevorsalienarms

“Receiving so much love.  Feels good, right?”

Would have felt even better if I didn’t have to return two of them because of unacceptable and frustrating signal issues. Would honestly like to see more attention being paid to that, though that’s not really the domain of the developer community.

You mad bro? Yeah, I am kind of! (More jealous of those who got ones that seem to work properly.)

    • DroidzFX

      Complain much?

      • trevorsalienarms

Not typically, but it doesn’t seem unreasonable to expect the units I sampled to work as well as any other VZW phone as a phone. All the rest of the awesome the Nexus brings to the table kind of pales when I can’t make a call when I want. But, I’m dragging this off topic again, so I’ll go sulk in the corner now.

        Thanks for asking though!

A lot of us don’t have signal issues…

        • http://cad.cx Colin Dean

I’ve had zero signal issues. But then again, I’m GSM.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Tim-o-tato

What area do you live? Could be isolated.

      • trevorsalienarms

NE Ohio, in a technically 4G-rich and solid coverage area. Yeah, VZW tech support and I mulled that possibility, but it seemed less of a viable theory once my other new phone (which for the record, was NOT my first choice, I’m not even that thrilled with it…) demonstrated the ability to make calls and switch between 3G/4G seamlessly and very quickly. Both Nexuses I got would take up to 15 minutes to make that switch, if they were getting signal to begin with. Doing the airplane mode dance didn’t make much of a difference. Sometimes you just know something isn’t right, and these were definitely not right.

I’m stilled bummed I got bad apples apparently, as I was so looking forward to this and absolutely love the device, it’s gorgeous but it has to work as a phone, something neither of mine could do reliably.

Admitttedly, my post here was a bit of a troll I guess (all good natured, I promise), but this site is my primary Android topics/news site, so seeing all of you happy Nexus owners is like getting repeatedly punched in the yambag. Maybe it’s not widely publicized, but there are plenty of non-fanboy average schmoes like me on plenty of other forums scratching our heads wondering why our Nexuses just don’t seem to be able to maintain solid reception.

My plan is to hang on to this other phone until I hear that the Nexus reception issues seem to be worked out, quietly or otherwise and I’ll be right back to it if I can.

    • http://profiles.google.com/cvananden Chris VanAnden

When I’m in my apartment I get 1 bar of 4G at like -110dBM. When I go out it jumps to 2 or 3 bars and the signal improves. I’ll randomly have an amazing signal in my apartment with 4G on but I don’t count on it.

I’ve noticed indoors that if i switch my 4G off and use just 3G my signal is significantly better. I have these issues and I live in the NYC area

      • Anonymous

The only time I’ve ever lost signal is when switching from 4g to 3g its only happened once without me manually switching the 2.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

3G is able to penetrate buildings much better than 4G.

I wasn’t at all aware of this.

I too am experiencing terrible signal quality. Coming from an OG droid i expected better not worse reveption. I do not simply go by bars but i have never seen more than two and usuallynone. I am not in a 4G area andmy 3G stinks. I am going to swap it today after putting it back to stock yrsyetday.Does anyone think flashing a new rom will change this? I want tolove this phone.it is great with all the dev fun but if i cant connect it is moot.
