Droid Life’s Look Back At 2011 In Numbers

by: | posted 12.28.11 | News, Polls

We have a huge love for people’s opinions here at Droid Life, which most of you have gathered as participants in our well known reader polls.  Over the course of this year alone, we have posed about 70 different poll questions, asking that you share things like which devices you want, what features you need, and even what apps you can’t live without. As a community driven news outlet, there is not a better way for us to decide the direction of the site than through these polls. Plus, they are a ton of fun. At the end of 2011, we have reached 650,000+ total votes casted and more than 480,000 comments.  To us, those numbers are mind-numbing.

So down below we have gone ahead and pulled some of the top polls, charted them, and then presented them in a way that will give us all a look at what 2011 was all about. Who were the most popular manufacturers from one quarter to another? Are unlockable bootloaders important during the purchasing decision? Did any of our 2011 predictions come true?  Enjoy.

Want to Upgrade to 50GB of Box Storage for Free and Without Rooting? Try This Sneaky App

by: | posted 12.28.11 | Apps, Deals, News

Box and it’s cloud storage service is apparently running some sort of free 50GB upgrade for owners of the Sony Xperia Play and various LG phones through the end of the year (yep, just 3 days left). Why we aren’t see it for every Android phone is beyond me, but Sony and LG likely struck some sort of deal to make their devices look more appealing. If you don’t own either though, you can get the 50GB thanks to a handy little app created by developer redphx. Previous attempts to get devices the free space were limited to rooted phones and forced you to edit your build.prop, but this new app allows you to get it by simply signing into your Box account.

*Note – One of the permissions does include Internet Access which may scare some of you since you are using your account login to get the deal. The developer assures us that “no email or password is stored,” but how can you really tell? Proceed with caution. I can say that my account does indeed have 50GB of storage now after using this app though.

*Note 2 – As reader ksat has mentioned, a simple password change in your Box.net account should ease your concerns after using this app.

HTC Rezound Bootloader Unlocked at HTCDev Even Though It Isn’t Listed as a Supported Device

by: | posted 12.28.11 | News, Rezound, Root

HTC Rezound owners, get your butts over to HTCDev.com immediately before this gets shut down.

According to a variety of forums, the Rezound’s bootloader can be unlocked using the tools provided at HTCDev. You are left with S-ON afterwards, but to my knowledge, that’s the way all HTC unlocked phones are left after using these tools.

It should be noted that you won’t find the Rezound listed as a compatible device, but if you follow all of the instructions laid out, your phone will indeed get the unlock treatment.

Verizon 4G LTE Nationwide Data Outage Happening Once Again (Updated)

by: | posted 12.28.11 | News

It has been a rough month for Verizon’s network to say the least. The entire network (both 3G and 4G) for LTE  customers appears to be down once again. This would be the third time this month alone. According to Twitter, the outage seems to be pretty sporadic with some in NYC having no issues while others are. Phoenix, Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and Portland are also being reported as down.

As usual, we would love to hear your city and state in the comments and whether or not you are having issues. If you are, be sure to let us know when you see network access again.

Download: MotoACTV App for Non-Motorola Phones

by: | posted 12.28.11 | Apps, Downloads, News

Other than price, one of the biggest annoyances to Motorola’s MotoACTV sports tracker has been the fact that it is limited to only being able to pair with Motorola Android phones. This limitation left anyone who owns say a Galaxy Nexus, Rezound or other non-Moto phone without the ability to receive calls, texts or calendar notifications during a workout – one of the major selling points to the device. Thankfully, the developer community has our back again and pulled out the permission from the app that was asking to validate with Blur and it now works on all Android phones, accepting calls, texts and even calendar reminders.

DROID 4 Audio Clips Confirm That It Was Ready For Launch

by: | posted 12.28.11 | News

It’s pretty obvious that the DROID 4 will not be launching in 2011. Early rumors pegged it for a December 22 release, but that was almost a week ago now and the device is no where to be found. Well, that’s not 100% accurate. Traces of the phone are everywhere on droiddoes.com, leading us to believe that this device was indeed headed for a December launch. Their marketing department or promotional team that puts these things together usually doesn’t populate that site with new device info unless we are ready to rock. What happened? That’s anyone’s guess. The latest target date we have seen is February, so for those waiting to get their hands on the first truly-powerful 4G LTE slider, it may be another month or two.

In the mean time, you can check out 6 audio clips that a friend sent over, giving us a great description of the device in that classic droiddoes.com military-esque/futuristic-tech voice.

Andy Rubin: 3.7 Million Android Devices Activated Over X-Mas

by: | posted 12.28.11 | News

Yeah, 3.7 million activations is a lot of activations over a 2-day period. The only question mark here is whether or not that is both days combined or the total for each day individually. I would tend to lean towards that being the 2-day total or Mr. Rubin would have rephrased it or straight up dropped a “7.4 million” Tweet. According to a report yesterday, there were 6.8 million Android and iOS devices activated on X-mas Day alone, so going by all of that math, iOS was the clear winner here. Then again, when you are talking iOS devices being activated, you are talking iPads, iPod Touches and iPhones. With Android, sure you are getting some tablets in there as well, but the percentage there is likely in the 2.5% range of the total with phones taking the cake.

I think the biggest piece of the story here, is the fact that we aren’t seeing mentions of activations from any other player in the game. Where you at RIM and Windows Phone? This has been a 2-horse race for a while, but it is so more now than ever.
