Variety of Android 4.0.3 ROMs Already Available for the Galaxy Nexus LTE

The Android team announced at the end of last week that Android 4.0.3 would be the base of Ice Cream Sandwich going forward. Everyone cheered at the new social integration tools and camera capabilities, but then quickly realized one thing – the Galaxy Nexus is still on Android 4.0.2. So while we watched the Nexus S then receive Android 4.0.3 over the weekend, you can imagine that some G-Nex owners were slightly annoyed. And while we are sure that an update will be out in no time, this just means that we will simply have to look to the developer community to get us up to date. After all, isn’t that the beauty of a Nexus?

We grabbed 3 of the first Android 4.0.3 based ROMs that we could find for the LTE version, all of which happen to have been created by some of our favorite people or based off of our favorite ROMs. There is a CyanogenMod 9 kang, the RootzBoat from our boy Birdman, and some Gummy love from Kejar who you all know from the Liberty series.

      • IntlGrizzly

        Yup

I actually won’t be installing any roms or themes for at least a few months. I want to take in the glory that is Ice Cream Sandwich first. Once I get tired of it, then, well….that’s a different story.

    • Anonymous

Ditto! I like it the way it is. I root cause I am bored lol.

….but man, i need a fix for this battery life. MEH!

      • Anonymous

Get the extended battery, it seriously does help. It gives at least 30-40% more battery life. At least for me it does.

Will it still fit the dock i want to put in the car? How much thicker is it?

Can someone help me w/ setting up the adk? I’m stuck here:

Unzip the file & inside you will see android_winusb.inf. Copy this file to C:android-sdk-windowsextrasgoogleusb_driver replacing the “stock” android_winusb.inf

I don’t have an extras folder. Under android-sdk-windows I have: add ons, platforms, platform-tools, temp and tools.

    • Anonymous

I am pretty sure the newest version of the SDK has that included already. When you do ADB DEVICES, if ANYTHING shows up, you have correctly set up the SDK.

you probably have it disabled somehow. call verizon.

Anyone else having this problem with G-Nex: When I go to VZN voice mail, and push a number for my password, the system here’s it as being pushed twice.  So ’1″ is being recognized as ’1-1′ etc.  VZN just told me to take off my screen protector, but that’s not helping much.

    • Anonymous

I use google voice for vmail. It is realllllllly nice. have you tired it?

  • Philip Perry

directly from google… so why dont they push it out to the gnex already?

    • Anonymous

Because it has to go through Verizon first. JUST LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE.

        WRONG!!!!!!

I’m always unsure about which ROMs to flash.. I know people have their individual preferences as far as devs go, but I’m fairly new to the idea (I flashed liberty, then the unofficial GB to my DX) and I’m not sure what each one has to offer – the forum links don’t give much away. Kellex – try to get some screenshots next time to help noobs like me decide!

  • IntlGrizzly

While I really really wanted to get the Nexus, I couldn’t. But it did cause me to finally make the jump to root my DROID X and put a ROM on it.

I can tell you that that was definitely an unexpected outcome of the GNEXUS.

    • Anonymous

Hope you are enjoying it! Did you put ICS on it?

      • IntlGrizzly

Not yet. I wanted to put a more stable and better working one on it first, but ICS will definitely end up on my phone eventually

    • Anonymous

What did you root to? CM7 or Liquid? or MIUI?

      • IntlGrizzly

I tried to get CM7 and Liberty, both failed and broke my home button and lock screen. Kinda pissed. Im not sure what I did wrong. I’ve factory reset and SBFed. Gonna try MINI now even thoughI don’t like it in the hopes that it fixes those problems.

  • jmich

Have not had any signal issues.  I did have to return my first Nexus due to a mic issue.  The mic did not work on regular, but did work on speaker phone.  On regular it sounded very muted.  Returned phone, and all is well now

    • Anonymous

The voice recognition is so rad in ICS!

  • Michael Allis

So, just to make sure, these are just Vanilla Android updates, right? Or, for instance, are these full fledged ROMs (i.e. the CM9 ROM would include standard CM tweaks)?

    • Anonymous

there are only minor tweaks as of now.. advanced power menu and such

  • Anonymous

Jesus Christ, I’m sorry my Nexus experience hasn’t been as rosy as everyone else’s. I’ll refrain from thinking and go back to conforming to popular “consensus” if that will please the gods of the internet.

Titanium of course. I’ve been juggling these roms after restoring system data the signal meter won’t show blue for some reason.

    • http://www.facebook.com/nadeemqasem Nadeem Qasem

yea exactly. same problem here. i had to restore apps without system data to get it to work

  • steve

Do you have to wipe your device for these ROMs? If so, is there an easy way to restore it all?

  • Jeff G

Hi DL’ers..I ordered my Gnex at 10:03 PST and got it that friday. I love the phone but i have some questions for you all. First  I unlocked the phone the way DL showed. I had adb and sdk all set up and waiting before i had the phone in hand, but there was a glitch in my driver install, I got the waiting on device issue but got that figured out and did unlock the phone but the driver for the phone didn’t seem to install properly. My problem is that when i plug the phone into my laptop (to move files etc) i get the found new hardware wizard window popping up ( i am in windows xp btw) but it says there was a problem installing this hardware…samsung mobile MTP device. Now  on the phone when i go into settings/usb computer connection and switch from media device MTP to camera PTP my computer picks it up and i can see Galaxy Nexus under my computer but listed as a digital camera. when i click on that it opens and i think i am seeing all the phone stuff alarms right thru tunny browser. But i want it to be right, this kind of bugs me anyone have a fix? and i think this will interfere with my file space eventually, i am still trying to figure out how this works without an sd card…
Also where do i go to see the dbm (I think hats it) that people refer to when speaking of connection speeds etc?
And the thing that is bugging me the most! when i open up any music source tune in radio for instance , even with the volume all the way up it is barely loud enough to hear. I used to love listening to things thru my old OG droid’s speaker and i wasnt expecting this one to be as good as that (which was amazing for its size) but i thought i would at least be able to hear it, it is coming out at call volume not speaker phone volume if that makes any sense.I do not think  one has to wear headphones to listen to music do  we?
I apologize for such a long post but i know this is the palce ytto find folks who know what they are talking about.
Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays.

    • QtDL

Changing the USB connection type to PTP was the only way for me to unlock/root. It took me forever to figure that out. Once I changed that setting I was able to install the proper drivers for it to be recognized. I haven’t hooked up my GNex since rooting last night but plan on messing with it tonight. I was concerned as well about the storage/transfer issue w/ it reading as a ‘camera’.

      • xformulax

MTP is not for Mac, it’s part of windows media framework… and if you’re on XP you need at least windows media player 10 for MTP support.

        • QtDL

My mistake. I was just reading what it said under the USB settings of the phone when I was messing with it.

        • QtDL

This is what it says when I plug my Nexus into my PC.  “There was a problem installing this hardware: Samsung Mobile MTP device. An error occurred during the installation of this device. The required section was not found in the INF.” …..How do I fix it so I can use the MTP USB connection?

For those with battery problems: Try Android Revolution HD ( http://androidcommunity.com/android-revolution-hd-rom-2-2-1-on-the-verizon-galaxy-nexus-20111219/ )

No visual tweaks, all performance based.

I just saw that apparently Google is ‘suspending’ 4.0.3 to the nexus s for battery drain/high cpu issues. Not sure if that applies to us but still something to keep in mind.

This is exactly why this is the one and only phone you should be considering if you haven’t yet bought one. Every major developer out there is already working on this phone (Pete, Greg of PE, P3Droid, nearly everyone working with Rootzwiki) and those that don’t have it yet (like Liquid) are planning to soon.

    • Peter

It makes me giddy with excitement that literally every dev that I followed on the OG is now on the GNex. Hopefully I get one from santa…

      • QtDL

That depends. Have you been naughty or nice? :)

  • PC_Tool

Running RootzBoat v4 and GAPPS v10.  Flawless.  Cannot believe how much smoother this is than the 4.0.2 OTA.

…this is why you buy a Nexus, folks.

(DroidVicious already has a MIUI v4 out as well, but it’s a WIP…)

anyone complaining about signal needs to read this

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/5254/investigating-the-galaxy-nexus-lte-signal-issue

there is NOTHING wrong with signal strenght on the GNex

    • Keith Sumner

When several end users post that they have poor signal strength in real world settings, how can you deny that. “No, you are delusional, you are not having signal problems”

      • PC_Tool

…you can question whether they actually own a Nexus…especially if it comes along with “plastic toy” and “poor build quality” comments.

        • Bretski

Well in some defense the build quality isnt like Droid, however thats really not the point to owning the phone.

          • PC_Tool

Depends on whether you feel plastic is *always* inherently inferior or substandard regardless of the application or quality.  More doesn’t always equal better.  In many case, more is nothing more than a gimmick.  At worst, it degrades build-quality.

          • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

i agree with you. idk why people say this phone feels cheep. that plastic used on the body feels almost like metal. sure the cover is a bit weird, but i couldn’t care less about the build quality of my battery cover, doesn’t really affect the phone. at least it stays on!

and i ALWAYS have at least the minimum available 4g service which is like 3up/2down (still faster than my DSL) so im still impressed. not much signal strength issues besides the fact that i live in a 4g dead zone.

          • Anonymous

Speaking of the build quality of the battery cover…

            Case closed.

          • Anonymous

So it’s flexible? Doesn’t help the feel of the phone at all IMO

            No, you spelled durable wrong…

          • Orlando Ayala

GSII battery cover? How does that help the GNex owners?

      • Anonymous

Reading > U obvisouly you didnt read the article.

      • Anonymous

…maybe they live in a poor signal strength area.

    • Dshudson

Agreed, at work in Boston, I wouldn’t notice anything because my signal strength is so strong.. at home though, I have a different signal entirely, at times I will even receive failed text messages because the signal is so bad.. That being said, I had the TBolt, Bionic, Tbolt now Gnex, I can tell you with 100% certainty that Bionic reception was slightly better than TBolt and Gnex is almost the same as Tbolt slightly better, but not as good as the Bionic.. I have only received one failed text notification and I have had the device since the 16th. So in closing haha I will say there is no problem with the signal.. it’s fine..

Install a wireless network. When I’m at home, I always get full bars while Galaxy Nexus is connected via wireless router. It’s awesome

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000249685691 Jack Witherell

       I Don’t think so…

I flashed a rom update from 4.0.2 to 4.0.4 on my GNex and my signal strength everywhere increased by a minimum of one bar.

The internet also stopped flipping on and off as well.

    • KevinC

actually, it’s google that makes customizing android cell phone possible.  they do pretty much all of the work.

If anyone is running this can you tell us if in 4.0.3 if facebook sync works yet? I’m curious if the facebook app is already updated for 4.0.3.

    • Charlienesh505

      I have the same question.

    • Anonymous

That’s something that has to come from Facebook in an update.

      • Anonymous

No, its Google who took it out.  Why do you think this article talks about “social integration” of 4.0.3?

        • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

No google took out nothing but a special privilege that they gave Facebook. now facebook has to use the front door like everyone else.

Where’s the one that fixes the poor build quality and my awful reception?

    • http://twitter.com/LucasNJohnson Lucas Johnson

      you obviously don’t have one…

      • Anonymous

        Believe what you want.

    • Anonymous

if it had poor build quality why did you buy it? Why do you still have it? Maybe you dont really own one. Build quality is solid. Ill give you reception issues but thats it.

      • http://Twitter.com/ContestsAccount bigrob60

I don’t have any reception problems at all. The stereo speakers blow, but I was prepared for that.

        • http://twitter.com/darkzero7 Anthony

speakers are awful. I actually have better signal and GPS  reception on my Nexus than I did on my OG (before I fried it) and my replacemnt D2.

          • eleazar

My signal bars are absolutely lower than on my thunderbolt, but as we all know, that doesn’t mean anything. I’ve had 0 dropped calls and my data throughput is 100% identical to my Thunderbolt.

I couldn’t be freaking happier with this beast.

          • Dshudson

I agree, in my earlier post.. it is a little bit better than tbolt signal.. I am very happy

          • http://Twitter.com/ContestsAccount bigrob60

If my G-Nex had the speakers of the OG Droid I would have no complaints at all. Does anyone know of an app the might improve the speaker quality?

          • Crow

            Volume+

          • http://Twitter.com/ContestsAccount bigrob60

Cool. I’ll check it out. Thanks.

          • xformulax

agreed, volume+ (paid version) on +10 volume works fine.

          • Anonymous

Are you running this on the stock nexus or are you rooted? I downloaded it and plan on slowly working my way up so I don’t blow the speakers

          • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

you got a point. im really disappointed with the volume of the speakers. even on max my ringtones are about no more than 3/4 as loud as my OG. but that’s such a small neg about this phone. just get some headphones for music and put it on vib.

          • Anonymous

My speakers are fine. I can listen to Music and youtube w/out a complaint, however the alerts and volume are very hard to hear. I think it’s more of a software issue and not related to the speakers

          • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

oh really? i guess i haven’t really tried listening to anything. ill test it out. but my complaint was directed towards the notification volume, i have to turn it all the way up or its useless.

          • Anonymous

Yeah it’s even useless all the way up lol. I hope the custom roms take care of this issue. Also the navigator voice. Boy I could do without that and I’d be happy with the old voice

          • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

omg yes. idk why they even changed it. last one was fine. much better than this one. she sounds like shes a smoker and a bit slow in the head too.

        • Anonymous

Im not really having signal issues either but enough people are that you have to admit something is wrong. Speaker isnt loud but i hate loud rings anyway and if im listening to music i use headphones or the jack to input.

        • Granted

That sucks about the speaker, cause when my upgrade is up I might have bought it. But after going from the awesome speaker on the Droid, then being horribly annoyed at the Droid X’s crap excuse for a speaker, well I just don’t know. Speaker quality is a big deal to me, along with good specs and power, so I’m going to have field test a bunch of phones when March roles around. But maybe I’ll just hack my tablet and create the first tablet phone, and proceed to look like a complete asshat walking around talking with a tablet on the side of my head.

          • http://Twitter.com/ContestsAccount bigrob60

LOL. 4G Tablet w/ skype and bluetooth headset & your all set.

      • Anonymous

I don’t. I had more dropped calls on this than the Charge, first time I’ve been unsatisfied with the call quality of a phone on Verizon since I jumped to smartphones. Returned it and kept my RAZR.

    • Anonymous

Build quality is fantastic. Not a flaw at all. Of course it’s all a matter of opinion, but to say it’s a poor build quality is harsh. And regarding signal issues, I have read about these problems, but I am fortunate to not have any. Not a single instance of dropping calls, losing data, or being very slow for me. Maybe I’m lucky.

      • PC_Tool

No, I’m pretty sure you’re in the same boat as most Nexus owners.  Along with the “build-quality” comments, the “signal issues” seem to be the trumpet call of people who are apparently unhappy about the buying decisions of others for whatever irrational reasons…

Zero issues with this G’Nex as well.

        …but maybe…just maybe…we’re just really frakking lucky.

      • Anonymous

The main issue is a generally weaker signal being pulled for whatever reason. It’s not a big difference maybe 5dBm.

I tested my Bionic (post OTA) before I got the Nexus and it does get a slightly better signal where I live. However, download speeds are about the same and in a strong signal area I am getting speeds faster than I’ve ever seen on the Bionic.

        • Anonymous

Signal strength doesn’t mean anything when a data connection is frequently dropped. I consistently had much lower speedtest scores with my GNex than my RAZR or even Droid X on 3g when it actually did work.

      • Anonymous

I guess I’m just spoiled with Motorola and HTC phones then, I just can’t get over the feel of Samsung phones next to such solid devices like the Droid X and Rezound. My OG has been through hell and back and I didn’t have the same confidence in my GNex.

      • Anonymous

I’m happy w/ the build quality too. The droid was too much of a tank.

I like the placement of the charger, volume controls and power buttons and I seem to be in the minority there as well. I can plug the phone in and put it upside down in the cup holder w/out any stress on the charger. I’m right handed so the volume keys are in a perfect spot as is the power button. I’m thrilled about the design of the phone.

I am, however having signal issues at times. Once I couldn’t even make a call and a few times I had no 3g or 4g

  • Scottholstein Sh

Any chance one of these could help with signal reception? My signal is so poor it won’t matter how many ROMS someone comes out with…NEED A SIGNAL FIX BAD!
