New Facebook Update on Android is Live in the Market

We tweeted about this a few hours ago (following us on Twitter?), but wanted to make sure everyone saw it. The new Facebook app that was previewed this morning, is live and available to all. With it, comes a whole new UI that allows you to navigate from anywhere, better tagging, a new photo viewing experience, improved searching, faster notifications and more. It’s pretty massive, even for Facebook.

I have been playing with it and like almost the entire update. Only issue I now have is with uploading pictures. You used to be able to tag and choose the album to where you wanted the photo to upload. It doesn’t appear as if either of there are options any longer.

Any chance someone could pull the apk for this newest update and post it somewhere to allow me to download it? I ask because I have a low-end tablet (Coby Kyros) that technically doesn’t have access to the Android Market. I do have it running on the device, but it’s not possible to update Facebook because Facebook is not supposed to be compatible with this tablet. I can easily install any apk, so a simple download of the newest version of FB would be much appreciated. Thanks!

If you use Facebook it is a huge improvement over the old UI. I used to only access on the web but since it is basically the same now, I will be using this one.

  • this is one app I have never bothered to download, never will

  • Mike S

    Im waiting to be impressed!

  • Great update but still a FAILl!!! you  cant like someones post form the app.
For example, if there’s comments on a pciture and you want to like what someone posted you cant from the app, you still need to go into the mobile web. FIX IT DAMN IT!

    • Anonymous

Really? You’ve been able to do this for a while. From the news feed, click on the “+” icon next to each post on the right and you get the option to Like or Comment. From within a post itself viewing others’ replies, there’s the word “Like” in each reply.

      • The 1st part is correct im not speaking about that.
You’re thinking about the web app that allows you to do what u described. Do EXACATLY what i stated. You cannot like a comment thats within a pic or status update.

        • huh?  yes you can, i just did it…from the app.

        • Anonymous

I apologize, you are semi-correct. You can however Like comments on a status update. Similarly, you can also Like comments on photos as long as you select the “X Likes, Y Comments” below the picture on your news feed. However, you are correct that when opening a picture from a gallery or something, then choosing Comments from the full screen image, you can’t Like those comments.

  • toasty

Still garbage without push notifications on comments

    • I have push notifications and works very well

  • omniphil

Does it still have a service thats always stays running even with notifications turned off?

Does it still ping GPS every time you open, with no way to turn off? No thanks.

    • Anonymous

Turn your gps off. It’ll save you battery anyway. Lots of widgets out there to make it easier.

  • Alan

Still a piece of junk. And still no notifications for comments to statuses? Seriously? COME ON.

    • my thoughts exactly!

    • Anonymous

You dont get notifications for status comments? Strange I do. But its not reliable.

    • Anonymous

I know this sounds strange, but find someone with a blackberry and add the Facebook for Blackberry Smartphones app to your facebook account and you will start receiving notifications for everything like you’re supposed to. Worked for me, I used to barely get anything except event invites and inbox messages, now I get everything.

  • Jake

Is it just me, or when uploading a picture you can’t choose what Album it goes in?

    • Blackmagick20

      It’s just you

Damn you Kellex. Once again I fall prey to the master of the tagline and jump on the download of something I abhor. FB is like a dark alley with sounds of heavy breathing (not the good kind) and you made me, forced me, pushed me, into downloading the update just on your UI sayso. All I gotta say is behhhh, behhhh

The new web and app look its horrible. It makes it really difficult for the user to get to places such as your profile, friends..etc.

    • Are you high? You just like to hate, I’m not a huge fan of facebook… but the update vastly improved the user interface. No longer do you have to go to each independent screen to do anything the menu is on the top left giving you access to friends/pages/etc… while status views are in the top right.

      Quit hatin poser.

      • Anonymous

First thing I noticed too. I actually like the new mobile revamp.

  • StormFreak

It seems like my new notifications aren’t showing up in the list. It says I have 3 new notifications, but it still shows the notifications from last night. If I actually login to FB, they show up fine. Hmmm..

    • Professor Poopypants

pull down to refresh in the little popup bubble for notifications

too bad my OG droid basically self combusts when i try and use facebook

  • Austin

Like I said when I tipped you guys my og droid hates this update because it eats all of the memory and runs slow.

    • HuskerHog

My OG Droid took longer the first time I tried the new update, but works great on the second time.

    •  374 people tipped DL before you.

  • nice post! thanks!

  • I want Push support Facebook! Please dont bother with your facelifts until you can push me notifications.

    • Anonymous

      Push works fine here..

I actually like the new app. I was using friendcaster before and that app is just wonderful except you can’t send msg. That’s a major issue for me.

    • Evan Knofsky

Just download the standalone messaging app, I’ve been using it since it came out and it works great. Why they can’t implement that into the main app? Not sure

    • Anonymous

Cant you just click the drop down menu, go to messages and click the new message button in the top right?

      • Anonymous

I wish it would but it just sends you to the mobile website.

        • Anonymous

Weird. It looks like it’s still in the application on mine. I havent actually hit send but the compose message screen is in app.

          • Anonymous

Hit send. What phone? I have a droid 3.

  • Tyler Cameron

Anyone else getting double notifications for each message received? Also, I feels as though messages are not being pushed.. HTC Rezound

    • Anonymous

Completely agree that and conntacts not syncing.

      • Austin

My contacts started to force close when I went to them with Facebook sync to them. I had to take it away.

    • Aoholmes95

I also get duplicate contacts on mine

The FaceBook App gets worse with every update! I went back to using the browser. I get way more detail and it runs faster! The only thing I use the App now for is chatting.

  • Rtd4379

I really like it. I hated always having to go back to the menu to check my notifications

  • Sean

    Sander van Doorn is great!

Glad to see a SvD fan here! He’s a quite nice chap too.. 🙂

Btw, anyone figured out how to access the mobile timeline they talk about in the changelog? I have Timeline on my profile but the app is still the standard view..

  • Anonymous

Kell, it appears there is no pleasing anyone today. Get some rest buddy, tomorrow is gonna be a doozie.

  • eze4

    Facebook>Google+

    • CoFoltman84

Facebook has been coping some of Google+ design lately though…

      • LionStone

Yea, like when a pic is posted with a comment, now on FB when you tap on the pic, the comment goes away and you can actually “see” the pic and not with the comment superimposed on it. Thankfully FB copied Google+!

    • WAldenIV

Aside from the fact that the Google+ app isn’t broken and the fact that FB is just copying everything they can from Google+, why not?

  • Anonymous

Hmm…it’s actually quite enjoyable browsing Facebook through the application now.

  • Kellex when did you wake up? I had it for the whole day now 🙂

  • Hey Kellex…are you able to access the menu in ICS now? so you can sync your contacts

    • I’m actually wondering this as well.

      • Well, I checked out the app and there is no other way to manage the settings besides pressing the menu button, you can manage account settings without the menu button, but that is something entirely different. I found out today that friend caster allows you to sync your contacts though…so maybe that works with ICS

    • Anonymous

you acan access the menu, but contact syncing is still a no-go.

  • Noyfb

facebook sucks worse than a loose hooker after a busy weekend.
