Rumor: Verizon Customer Service Confirms Galaxy Nexus Pre-order and Launch, You Should Probably Remain Skeptical

by: | posted 11.28.11 | News, Rumors

I’ll try to make this as quick as possible, so that we can move on with our day…

Stirring up all kinds of craziness on this Cyber Monday is a report out of the ComputerWorld camp that suggests the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon will go up for pre-order tomorrow (November 29), with December 8 as the official launch day. Their source is an angry VZW customer who chatted up customer service to find out what the deal was with the delayed launch. The rep he spoke with via online chat followed by a phone call, was clear that the phone would be available soon. That same rep also confirmed to the customer that a local store would be calling to let him know that they would be holding a G-Nex for him on launch day, December 8.

I don’t mean to crush dreams this morning, but this isn’t exactly a confirmation directly from Verizon PR or a company spokesperson. This, as with a lot of the rumors floating about these days, is from a CS rep and a store. To my knowledge, those dates are current targets, but until Big Red makes it publicly official, I would be hesitant to mark them on your calendars as the day. We have seen very similar emails over the last few days from readers who have spoken with VZW reps, but again, it’s tough to take this as anything more than unofficial for now.

Feel free to cross those fingers though – if these dates are going to hold up, we should know something tomorrow either way.

Cheers Peter, Nick and everyone else!

Motorola Announces Two New 720p HD Devices for China, How Long Before We See Them in the U.S.?

by: | posted 11.27.11 | News

Over the holiday weekend, Motorola made two new devices official in China:  the Motorola HD XT928 and the Motorola MT917. Both will look familiar as each was photographed just a couple of weeks ago. Now, normally we ignore most of the phone releases outside of the U.S., but these caught our eye for the simple fact that they have 720p HD displays, which is a first for any Motorola device. Each phone will sport a 4.5″ 720p LCD display (330ppi) and 13MP rear camera, along with the rest of the specs you can find in the DROID RAZR or DROID 4 (1.2GHz dual-core OMAP4430, 1.3MP front camera, etc.). Not bad, right?

We are just wondering why these phones have been announced so close to the RAZR and D4 with almost identical specs, yet have upgraded screens? It’s pretty obvious that Moto has the technology ready for mass consumption, leading us to believe that these phones (or at least one of them) will be here some time early next year. At the rate Motorola has been tossing out phones over the last 6-7 months, nothing would surprise us. Motorola HD with 4G LTE on display at CES? Makes sense.

So the MT917 is up top as the RAZR twin but with a higher MP camera and HD display. The phone below is the XT928 aka the Motorola HD. We’re just guessing here, but the XT928 could easily be the DROID X3. We should also point out that Moto appears to have partnered with Dolby digital to potentially take on HTC and their Beats integration. Oh, and someone better find a way to slap an LTE radio in these or that HD screen is going to be collecting dust here in the states.

A Look at DROID 4 Accessories: Two LapDocks, Two HD Docks and Wireless Keyboard with Trackpad

by: | posted 11.27.11 | Accessories, News

The DROID 4 should be here in just a couple of weeks on December 8, so I’m sure some of you were wondering what the accessory situation would look like. Since the DROID 3 missed out on LapDocks and other webtop goodies, would this phone get compatibility with them? It most certainly will. As you can see in the image up top, the whole array of docks, LapDocks, car docks and keyboards are on the list. The wireless keyboard with trackpad seems fairly new, so we’ll be on the lookout for the improvements made to it over the standard Bluetooth option.

This truly is a RAZR with a keyboard and slightly smaller screen. Check out the full specs here and press shots of the device here.

Galaxy Nexus Landing Page Goes Live on Best Buy Site, Wrong Name and $299 Price Included

by: | posted 11.27.11 | News

Best Buy and that damn Nexus Prime 4G LTE name. They have reportedly issued a correction to their employees that the name is officially Galaxy Nexus, in case some of you were wondering. So please, continue to refer to it as “Galaxy Nexus” just like we have since September.

What’s up with the price though? Is this phone going to be $199 or $299? Best Buy seems to think $299, but again, we saw ads just 2 days ago from Verizon suggesting that the phone could be $199. We are starting to wonder if there will end up being 16GB (for $199) and 32GB (for $299) models, thus the difference in price. The only problem with that theory, is the fact that Google only lists the phone as having 32GB of storage on their Nexus landing page. But again, the Euro-unlocked G-Nex is only shipping as a 16GB model, so we know those exist too. Ahhh, confusion.

I do want to remind you to ignore the full $799 price that Best Buy is listing. It won’t be that expensive through Verizon. Best Buy has to sell phones at higher full retail prices to hopefully get you into a new 2-year deal. These companies make all of their money by getting you into contracts, not selling you phones. Expect that to be around the $649 mark that we have seen for the RAZR and Rezound.

And as far as the price being “effective Sunday, Nov. 27th,” I wouldn’t look into that too much. It probably means that Best Buy was expecting this phone to be ready today, just like we all were including Verizon, only that hasn’t happened as the phone is still going through testing. December 8 is still the current target to our knowledge.

Verizon to Sell the Galaxy Nexus as a Phone With “No OEM Customization”

by: | posted 11.26.11 | News

Verizon’s comparison of the Galaxy Nexus to the competition gave me a good laugh today because of one category in particular. See the “User Interface” section? They plan to use the “No OEM customization” as a selling point for this phone, which just so happens to be the number 1 asked for approach to most phones by all Android enthusiasts. It’s fascinating to see a carrier differentiate a phone out as being stock, since the entire point of OEM skins to begin with is to help differentiate them all. It just shows you how few Android phones there are that can offer you a truly stock experience. They don’t come around often my friends, this would be Verizon recommending that you jump on it.

Also nice to see them list 32GB again, especially with that $199 price floating around this weekend.

And by the way, full training is effect – still no firm date though.

On a related note – does anyone else find it odd that they did not use 4G LTE in the comparison sheet? I’m not suggesting that it won’t be LTE, I’m just saying that they usually use LTE as one of their top selling points.

DROID 4 vs. DROID RAZR – The Evolution of DROID, Specs, and Official Pictures

by: | posted 11.26.11 | Exclusive, News

The DROID 4 has come from out of no where to having us within just a couple of weeks away from launch. The current target date that we have seen from Verizon is December 8, the same day that we could potentially see the Galaxy Nexus (hard to bet on that though). This phone is what the DROID 3 should have been. It has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM, but most importantly, can connect to Big Red’s 4G LTE network. It’s like a RAZR, only with a smaller screen and a 5-row slideout keyboard that has side-lit keys.

To see how we got from the DROID 2 all the way up to this point in about a year, we have an evolution graphic for you below. This is the perfect example of how fast the mobile landscape is changing.

White Motorola DROID RAZR in the Works?

by: | posted 11.25.11 | News

Could we see a white version of the DROID RAZR in the coming months? According to this shot from Verizon, one has at least been entered into their device management system. We have seen all white phones from Samsung, HTC and LG, but this is sort of new territory for Motorola. Sure they had partially white phones with the DROID 2 Global and the R2-D2, but we are imagining white all over this slender beast. Sort of odd to see this version loaded into the system at the same time as the regular RAZR, but that could mean a variety of things.

I’m a big fan of the RAZR design and would welcome in another color. If I had any skills whatsoever with Photoshop, I would try to whip up a render, but will instead hope that one of fabulous readers can make it happen. :)

This interest anyone? Maybe by the time they release it, the Google merger will have been 100% finalized and we will start to see some unlocked bootloaders? Wishful thinking, I know.
