Add December 19 to the Asus Transformer Prime Release Date List

by: | posted 11.29.11 | News, Rumors

The Asus Transformer Prime has had about as many rumored release dates as the Galaxy Nexus. We had seen both December 9 and November 28 through Gamestop’s website as possibilities, but now according to their internal systems, they are expecting the world’s first quad-core tablet to be available December 19. Pre-orders have opened up and with that came some confusion as to when the device would actually be available if you were to jump on it early. There is a chance that it will be later than the 9th after all. That does seem sort of late though, especially knowing that Asus has an event planned for “early December.” We’re wondering now how confused Gamestop potentially is?

Screen Comparison: Galaxy Nexus vs. DROID RAZR vs. HTC Rezound

by: | posted 11.29.11 | News

One of the top selling points for all three of Verizon’s big holiday devices (DROID RAZR, Galaxy Nexus and Rezound) will undoubtedly be their screens. Some have variations of the Super AMOLED display while another has a Super LCD. One is “qHD” while the others are the world’s first “HD” screens. There has been talk of PenTile and hatching and whether or not you can tell a difference between them at such high pixel densities. It can give you a headache if you dig too deeply into it, so that’s exactly what we did for you. As usual though, we like to keep it light on the science.

Microsoft Lets Android Users Experience Windows Phone 7 Via The Browser

by: | posted 11.29.11 | News

We would never leave Android, but it doesn’t hurt to test out how thinks might have been if we were to choose another operating system. I must admit, Microsoft has done some pretty snazzy stuff by creating a Windows Phone 7 emulator – all within your phones browser. By visiting http://aka.ms/wpdemo, you will be prompted to start a guided tour through WP7.

Your device will soon switch from Android to the Windows Phone 7 experience you see above. Every tile is functional and Microsoft has done an outstanding job with a unique marketing ploy. Additionally, at the end of the tour you have a chance to win a free Windows Phone 7 device – because they know, we all love free things.

Galaxy Nexus Gets the Teardown Treatment

by: | posted 11.29.11 | News

Waiting for the Galaxy Nexus has been painful enough already, so if you can’t possibly take anymore, then you may want to pass on watching iFixit do their standard teardown. As a device that is almost impossible to come by unless you are willing to fork out $700+ for an unlocked GSM version, this just hurts.

On a positive note, they gave it decent scores for repairability. Well, except for the glass, which they recommend you take good care of as it won’t be easy to replace should you crack it.

Nielsen: Android and Apple Control 71% of the U.S. Smartphone Market

by: | posted 11.29.11 | News

The smartphone game has had 2 elite players for quite some time, but when you combine the two to compare it to the rest of the big players, it just looks silly. According to Nielsen’s latest report, Android and Apple control 71% of the U.S. smartphone market. That puts Blackberry, WP7, WebOS and others at around 28% total. And that’s quite the stat.

I don’t want to completely write off these other mobile operating systems as having zero chance, but I don’t know how any of them will ever be able to catch up. In order to overcome a deficit, there are hurdles to jump and then there are Grand Canyons. I think it’s clear which type of gap Microsoft and RIM have to cover if they ever want to be taken seriously again. Will they be able to do it? It might take a miracle.

Adobe: Both Flash Player 11 and Adobe AIR to Support Galaxy Nexus in December

by: | posted 11.29.11 | Apps, News

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus may not support Adobe Flash 11 or AIR yet, but it will at some point in December according to the latest blog post from the Flash team. We were informed a week ago that they would bring support by the end of the year to Flash, so this matches up to that report while also tossing in an Adobe AIR mention. After both of these apps are updated though, don’t expect to see many more. With development halted on mobile platforms, we’ll have to look to community developers to make versions available to newer devices.
