Screen Comparison: Galaxy Nexus vs. DROID RAZR vs. HTC Rezound

One of the top selling points for all three of Verizon’s big holiday devices (DROID RAZR, Galaxy Nexus and Rezound) will undoubtedly be their screens. Some have variations of the Super AMOLED display while another has a Super LCD. One is “qHD” while the others are the world’s first “HD” screens. There has been talk of PenTile and hatching and whether or not you can tell a difference between them at such high pixel densities. It can give you a headache if you dig too deeply into it, so that’s exactly what we did for you. As usual though, we like to keep it light on the science.

First off, let’s get the specs out of the way so that we all know what we are dealing with here:

  • Galaxy Nexus:  4.65″ HD Super AMOLED (1280×720 resolution) – 316ppi
  • HTC Rezound:  4.3″ Super LCD HD (1280×720 resolution) – 342ppi
  • DROID RAZR:  4.3″ Super AMOLED Advanced (960×540 resolution) – 256ppi

With specs set, let’s take a look at the first macro shot of the three screens side-by-side-by-side. It’s a simple photo of website text zoomed out ever so slightly from each display. As you can see, all three of them read absolutely fine and show no distortion, pixelation or anything else that would have you complaining. Now, if you click on the image to get the full version, you will get the full effect with the PenTile hatching on the RAZR and Nexus. Does it matter all that much? To me, with these phones, no. The pixel densities are high enough that your naked eye will never be able to tell, as was the point of the picture below.

In order:  Galaxy Nexus, HTC Rezound, DROID RAZR

And just for fun, we took one more under a different lighting scenario so that you can really see the differences between the display panels. You can see how hard the Super AMOLEDs are working because they have to share pixels, while the Super LCD on the Rezound does not. Again though, the picture above which is a slight macro shot of the screens producing black text on a white website is the more realistic situation and they all look stellar (to me anyway). The shot below is really just to show you the differences between the screen technology.

Up next, we wanted to take all three devices into a real word situation that many of you care about:  streaming video. In this demo, you will get a sense of how video looks depending on the resolution, how Super AMOLEDs differ from Super LCDs when producing color, and the different viewing experiences. It’s not scientific by any means, but you should be able to tell a difference between the three.

So if there is a conclusion to come to out of all of this nonsense, it’s that each display is pretty damn good. The Rezound’s display may be the most clear up close, behind a macro lens, but when compared to that of the Galaxy Nexus, your blind eye probably won’t be able to tell a difference. At 342 and 316ppi, both screens will blow your mind. The DROID RAZR lags behind them a bit, but is a giant step forward from the screens that Motorola used on devices like the Bionic and DROID 3. Is there a winner? It all depends on what your eye prefers. As I said in the video, Super AMOLEDs tend to produce what some perceive as cartoonish or vibrant (read fake) colors, while the Super LCD on the Rezound tends to be as true and natural as you can get.

As we have said for weeks now, it’s best that you spend some time with each of these devices before making a decision. Depending on your needs, I’m not sure you could go wrong with any of them.

: Idk but my RAZR is sharp.

  • Anonymous

I am going to miss my DROIDX.

  • Travis John

kellex you should use pictures instead of a video. Its much easier to see which is better that way. unless you can get all three videos playing the same video at the same time down to the very milli second. even then pictures work better. And put a galaxy sii in there just to see difference between the AMOLEDS. to many people are making a big deal over the fact that the HD AMOLED uses pentile when most people haven’t even seen it in person. they just hear pentile and think it looks like the droid x2’s screen or the bionic’s screen. Now that you have the galaxy nexus please clear the air on this. Also I would like to see a picture comparison between the Rezound’s Razr’s and GNex’s camera. You can throw in the galaxy sii or the 4s as a benchmark.

Vision-impaired 22 year old thanks you for this. Seriously, this helps a lot.

  • http://www.facebook.com/adam.magie Adam Magie

    Glad I got the Rezound.

  • Bigsike

First of all I’m getting the Nexus, second I think the Razr is a beautiful sleek and sharp phone. If it weren’t for the advantages of a Nexus OS I would defiantly be picking up the Razr. I have to admit I don’t think that the Nexus is now going to have that eye shock that I had hoped for.

  • Anonymous

Light on science, that’s fine.  Quite light on meaningfulness as well.

  • yeahyeahyeah

I’ve always preferred the AMOLED screens to the LCDs, but after comparing RAZR vs. Rezound in real life, I was shocked at home much better the Rezound was.  Those who say you can’t tell the difference with the naked eye must be blind!  I’ll have to wait to compare the G-Nex to the Rezound, but I wouldn’t be surprised the Rezound screen looks noticeably better.  I’ll still probably go with G-Nex though….

  • John

Went to 3 different VZW stores in my area throughout the day. All said, when asked about Nexus, end of Dec to beginning of Jan is latest ETA they’ve heard. Sure, prob pure bs(YES i know they’re just CSRs) but still….makes me ::sigh::

    • STiK

I’d be shocked if it shows up before the end of the year… Not saying anymore :P

  • Aoholmes95

Super amoleds at night time are like shining a flashlight right in your face!

    • Fflan513

You do know that brightness is adjustable. lol

    • xformulax

I’d say the opposite… put an amoled vs traditional lcd on your nightstand at night with a desk clock using some dark text (dark red, blue, gray), and then tell me which screen keeps you up…. the amoled clearly shows only the clock (not the black background), where the typical LCD (like on my droid X) lights the whole screen up like a dark gray flashlight.

    • http://smartphoneblogging.com SmartPhoneBlogging

um no, its the other way around. LCDs are like flashlights even with a fully black colored screen. Amoleds have deep blacks and therefore much less of an flashlight effect.

Kellex I’m really liking the quality videos you have been posting (GNexus and ICS Overview), better than anything on Youtube. Keep it up!

  • Robertulintz

Everyone continues to moan about the Nexus. It’s not out yet! How do you know that IS the phone!? Try and use the phones that are currently out. I’ve had the Razr for 2 weeks, and now the Rezound for 2. I will then decide on a phone when the Nexus is out. After I actually use them!!!
Who gives a rats ass what logo is on the damn phone?
As of now, the Rezound is much better than the Razr. I can say that because I have used them both.
To say the Nexus IS the phone to get and whine about it is just………

    • Anonymous

How do we know it’s the phone?  Because he bought the phone.  The only difference is it has a larger battery and an LTE radio.  Kind of a dumb thing to say honestly.

      • Robertulintz

But everyone has not. That’s the point. The reviews of the Nexus is from one person that actually has it. Everyone else demands to have it. Why? Use it first and then “want” it. By the time all is said and done, I will use all three for a period of time and then decide. The phone I lock into for the next 2 years is going to be the one I want. Not what everyone else wants.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=662761387 Nader Elkurd

The Rezound “pops” from that desk from how thick it is. Jeez.

  • shdowman

You do realize that it was YOU who got the masses all riled up months ago regarding PenTile…  :P

    • DBK

      lol Oh the irony  :)

  • http://twitter.com/expertontech Tylar Overturf

I prefer the “pop” on the SAMOLED screens so to me the Galaxy Nexus’s screen is the best. I am pretty sure you couldn’t tell a difference between the Nexus and the Rezound clarity wise. You can definitely tell the RAZR screen if the worst up close. For me its 720p or gtfo.

  • Darat532

I really want to see an up close view of the IPS display of the LG Nitro HD. I have a feeling it is going to be the king of  clarity and vibrant colors. I have the Razr and absolutely love the display. It is one of the most responsive smart phones available at this time also.

  • Gerg04

All 3 look nice. Still the G-nex for me but…. Am I the only one who’s going to miss the kickstand from the tbolt?????

    • shdowman

Get a case with one on it… :)

      • Gerg04

Well said sir… I was unaware this was an option! Long live the kickstand, especially if you can charge while using…

    • http://twitter.com/grilmasterweber kweber

dude i love my kickstand !!! i am probably one of the few people that actually like the phone too lmfao

      • Mule0331

I went from a bolt to the razr, and I have to be completely honest, the screen on the bolt was crisper and when I have my wifes bolt and my razr side to side there is no noticible diff in the speed. I dont do much multitasking so Im not really noticing any discernable diff in the speed. The 2 big things I have noticed is the battery life on the Razr is tons better, and my signal strength is much better on the Razr. There are many things I still like about the Bolt.

      • Gerg04

Tbh I love my tbolt too…. If it weren’t for the sweet stockness that will be the G-Nex I would not get rid of my rooted and SOAB BAMF rom’d tbolt

    • Anonymous

i love my Tbolts kickstand too. gonna miss it. I love my old Dinc and my Thunderbolt. outstanding performance. i was going to just jump for the rezound, but im just waiting to see how the G Nex feels. ill say this though, i LOVED the contrast on my Dinc (first batch Amoled screen). with that said ill probably favor the Gnex screen more.
what i think is funny is ive been to like 4 Verizon stores to look at the Razr and rezoundb and not one of them had thr Rezound on display. every time they went to the back and got one out of the box. BUT the Razr was the first thing out on display……. whats with that sales marketing practice?

  • Jerry Lange

I mean the whole phone not just the screen lol

  • Jerry Lange

Can you guys compare the galaxy nexus to the nexus s? I want to know the difference as i’ve played with a ns

    • http://twitter.com/expertontech Tylar Overturf

Everything is better on the Galaxy Nexus.

      • Anonymous

        Well played lol.

  • Anonymous

Interesting to note from the very first picture is that it looks like the effective web site real estate is greater on the rezound and razr due to the galaxy nexus having on screen buttons.  A device with a 4.65″ screen has less real estate than phones with 4.3″ screens running gingerbread.  Granted the nexus will see more on the web page than the razr due to pixels, but still, that is almost disheartening.  I want my real estate!

    • xformulax

you really think so? the soft key bar is only 95px in height… don’t feel like doing the math, but i’d wager your “real estate” is right around 4.3″

now if you meant less overall resolution, then yes you’d be right… 1280×720 vs 1185×720, of course i’d imagine there will be some sort of gesture or hack to make the bottom bar hide out of the way.

    • Anonymous

take a look at the video, the G nex screen looks alot bigger than the rezound. its not only longer but wider, noticably wider. i was actually surprized.

  • Anonymous

Damn me for looking at this post on my “crappy” Bionic screen. I don’t know what the hell I’m looking at. :p

  • Ravnos CC

Can you do some more close up text shots with different colors?  Not all websites use black on white :P maybe some white on black (ala hardocp)?  Thanks.

    • EC8CH

that preorder story was a hack job.

      • Turbine Tech

I called customer service to “pre-order” today and was directed to sign up at the Verizon Galaxy Nexus landing page…

“If you sign up at the website you will be one of the FIRST to know when it is available.”

^^^^^ Yeah right…Thought it was worth the 6 minutes on the phone for a shot in the dark…

  • Gaswalla

I am an Android guy, so am only presenting this comparison: I’d never actually buy an Iphone.  The iphone 4 has 326 ppi.

    • EC8CH

Very nice screen, but I think it’s too small.  I’ve had my OGD for two years now, and I want my next phone to have a larger screen.

I think a lot of people will buy these newer Android phones over the I*hone in large part because of the larger screens

    • Anonymous

342, 326, 316ppi WTH is the difference? oh yeah thats right the other guys are 4.3″-4.65″ screens. they can take the 3.5″ and shove it…….. what good is it if you have to put it closer to your face to see it.

      • Anonymous

ill take the larger screen with the higher resolution any way…

  • http://twitter.com/trophynuts trophynuts

might be a good idea to tell people to watch this video in 720p instead of 360p or they’re all going to look like krap.

  • Anonymous

is there anyway to turn up the saturation through an app or something on a rooted phone? i just love to pump those colors :D

  • Anonymous

C’mon Kellex tell us which one that wows you :).

The RAZR and the Galaxy Nexus definitely stood out with vibrant colors, and between them I would say the edge goes to the RAZR but still close and hard to tell viewing from a video.

Will play with all three but i am definietly likeing the Nexus.  Thanks Kellex :)

    • EC8CH

you know which one he likes better… it rhymes with Kellexus

I’d say i like the galaxy nexus better from what I’ve seen. Bigger, more beautiful, and the phone doesn’t say HTC on it lol.

  • http://twitter.com/f_roller john fogle

a week or two after Nexus is released in NA, something better will be announced. I gave up waiting for Samsung/verizon and got a Bionic for me, and Thunderbolt for the misses. It’s a never ending cycle.

  • http://twitter.com/darkzero7 Anthony Mai

I really like the nexus and RAZR displays the best, but that’s because I have a preference for the more vibrant and vivid colors than the natural coloring that the HTC displays. In the macro shots it’s so easy to tell how much clearer the Super LCD is, but I could care less about being able to see slight distortions. I wear glasses, my vision isn’t super human!

  • Whatinthe23

Looks like all around great displays.

So I guess the word is week of Dec. 5th is preorder and then shipping the 15th for the Nexus?

Just for fun, you should have included the OG droid in this comparison.  The humor alone would have been great.  Maybe a new post!?!?

    • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Chris Gustafson

The DROID has a higher pixel density than the RAZR, so it actually wouldn’t look that bad. Lol

      Rezound: 341
      G-Nexus: 315
      DROID: 264
      RAZR: 256

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000395370412 Logan Lopez

See, another reason for the comparison.  Everyone needs to like my post so we can get the complete chart up!

        • Anonymous

Funny you say that, the bionic I had looked awful compared to my OG. One of the reasons I returned it.

      • Anonymous

And the OG Droid has an IPS display.

I just got home from the Verizon store less than 15 minutes ago to return the RAZR.  It’s just a pile of shit in my opinion.  Didn’t like the size, didn’t like the jaggies, and absoluted HATED the (non)Blur crap they put all over it.  Going from my CM7 OG Droid to the Razr wsa like stepping into hell.

I will wait for the GN, and even though it will still be too big for my preference (I think 4 inches is the sweet spot for my hands), I sure hope it is a lot better on the software front than the Razr.  I will miss the SD card slot, but not as much as I hated the display and non-removable battery.

        • brah

You mad about your small hands bro?

          • Anonymous

Not that I should bother taking your adolescent wannameme comment seriously, but it’s a conversation worth having.  Phones are getting borderline too big.  I don’t have small hands, but I don’t have monster hands either.  I wear a size large golf glove, which is probably about average for the guys I know.  A 5″ phone wouldn’t be usable at all with small hands (Ron Jeremy for instance, has tiny hands, but I guess he could swipe with other … uh, things).

I just like being able to reach the entire screen with one thumb without having to juggle the phone around much.  That’s easy on an iphone or OG Droid, doable on a 4-4.1″, but starts becoming a stretch with 4.5″ phones.

Really though, the biggest killer for my was the terrible Motorola software skin.  Even rooted, there were parts of it I couldn’t get rid of without screwing up the phone (like the gallery and other shitastic blurnovations).  The size was good enough.  The software just blew and I am not patient enough to wait for an AOSP based ROM while crossing my fingers that the locked down kernel isn’t going to be a major issue for flashing to it.

          • TC Infantino

I agree with you about the RAZR seeming just too big for the hand.  I don’t have much experience with the MotoBlur skin, so I can’t comment on that.  I bought the Rezound after weighing the pros and cons of the top phones out- RAZR, Rezound, Nexus (though I had to rely on the reviews for the GNex).  I didn’t like the way the RAZR felt, too wide, way too light and all the weight was at the top, non-removable battery, and the exterior door for the sim and SD cards looked cheap and easily broken.  I don’t like that the Nexus does not have expandable memory, and basically that it is Samsung (their phones feel cheap and plasticy to me).  The Rezound has an excellent screen, and in fact doesn’t feel too large in my hands, most likely because the screen ratio is 16:9.  It has a good weight to it, seems solidly built, removable battery, expandable memory card and it looks great with the all black with red accents.  I have not given the camera a serious test yet, but the couple of shots I have taken look very good.  Coming from the OG Droid, the speed improvements alone are awesome, and I am coming to like the Sense skin and the versatility it has.  Though I do hope someone comes up with a root method for this so that I have the ability to get rid of the bloatware that is taking up valuable space.  I really would recommend this phone to anyone who is looking to upgrade, it is seriously a sweet piece of hardware.

          • Matt Hickman

I have the Rezound also and have had the GNex and Razr and feel the Rezound is best because of size, screen, UI and beats audio.

I Don’t Mind Sense, I Replaced It With My Favorite; LauncherPro. While It’s Not Bad Hardware, Motorola Has ALWAYS Had Bad Software On Their Phones. There’s A Chance They Can Redeem Themselves With The Droid 4.

          • Anonymous

They already did with the bionic. Once moto added the extra memory, the software its awesome. It dethroned sense and touchwiz.

As far as stock, wth no rooting, (cause I don’t alter my phones) the Moto UI on the Razr is actually pretty nice.  I was fearing that it would be the same as my girl’s Atrix, but surprisingly, I found it much more pleseant.  For the fun of it, I installed Launcher EX to give it a test run and I found it less functional than the stock UI.

And I can actually reach the whole screen with my thumb and use the phone one-handed all the time. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

          • Anonymous

Well, in my defense, I did explicitly say it was just my opinion.  If others like it, go for it.  For me, it was an atrocity – I have a certain workflow and usage pattern and don’t like the way they locked it down and made it impossible (or very difficult) to get rid of the Blur stuff without breaking the phone.

The hardware was nicely built, despite the jaggy screen and lack of removable battery – but I have come to expect that in high end motorola phones.   Certainly not the tank that the OG droid is, but still decent.

Trust me, I wanted to love the phone (hold over 20k shares of Moto Mobility), but I just didn’t like it.  The Droid 4 might be the right phone for me.

          • beau

I don’t understand your logic. Did you just walk in blind and randomly point to a phone and say “That one!” you said it was too big for you and you also said you didn’t like Blur. Both things are pretty obvious if you even held it once and played with it for 5 minutes. And then you say you’re thinking of getting the Droid 4? You have obviously learned nothing and are probably one of “those” people who gets the latest and greatest because your cousin/wife/mother told you it was awesome.

          • Anonymous

I wholeheartedly disagree on the screen size.  I feel that 4.65″ is too small still. I’d like a 5 or maybe even 5.5″ screen size phone since it would totally negate any need I had for a separate tablet device.

You must have really small hands if you can’t reach all areas of the RAZR screen without juggling it around.

          • Granted

Hell yeah, the bigger the screen the better in my personal opinion. I do a lot of drawing on my phone and tablet so I like having more real estate. Plus steaming Netflix on the Galaxy Nexus I bet would be awesome! I think if the phone screen got to 6 inches, well that would be a little much to make calls on. It would be hilarious though to see some jackass making a phone call on a tablet size phone, haha!

          • Myfactwitterbookspace

I have large hand. I can palm a basketball, yet it’s a stretch for my right thumb to reach across to the upper left corner of the screen while holding it with my right hand, phone resting on my pinky of my Bionic. The Razr is even harder to do. The Galaxy Nexus isn’t any bigger than a phone with a 4.3″ display, it just gets the extra real estate from the lack of physical buttons. In retrospect of saying he has small hands, you must have poor eyes if you need a 5 – 5.5″ phone screen. You could always get alaodock 500, Web top accessories with hd station & smart controller, or if you want a REALLY big screen, get those old school glasses that Sony made back in 1998 that you plug in to your tv/vcr/dvd player that makes it look like you’re looking at a movie screen :)

          • Waiting

Totally agree…my 7″ tablet is just too big to fit my pockets easily…A 4.5″to 5″ screen would be ideal. Here is hoping that the nexus screen is what I’m looking for!
Now if they will release it before the ‘4 gig for the price of 2′ event is over, I’ll be set.Just my thoughts.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1608000023 Brad Beno

I think it’s a good conversation but everyone is going to have slightly different opinions on it. I have my dislikes about certain things on the RAZR coming from an Incredible. Overall though I like it. I thought the blur thing was awesome the first time I saw it. I also have an anti-glare screen protector on it n that makes my screen not as shiny for some reason, so maybe that’s why it doesn’t annoy me.

lol- The RAZR is definitely too wide for the majority of normal people’s hands.

I actually just upgraded to the Rezound from having my OG Droid for 25 months.  The Rezound is great- the display is awesome and it is super fast.  The dual core 1.5 combined with 4G LTE blows away my OG Droid- it’s like upgrading from a Prius to a Corvette.

Unfortunately a $50 Rezound was too good to pass up.  I guess I will be getting the quad core Moto Nexus when it comes out at the end of 2012.  Enjoy the Galaxy everyone!

Out of all that he said that is what you commented on??  Wow.

Ever hold the droid X? The Nexus is just about the same width. The Razr feels very wide and weird in my hand.

        • Anonymous

since when did the OG Droid have an IPS display????? i had one at launch, and i can tell you it has no such thing.

          • Anonymous

OG Droid had the best display at the time and arguably the best until the iPhone 4 came out. It is a standard RGB IPS panel with 264 PPI and some of the best color reproduction around.

          • James Friedman

I agree in fact it even won awards for best mobile picture display. The colors really pop, and are very well balanced. Very comparable to the iphone 4 display

          • Bob

Android to the death but i must say, retina display>

          • Anonymous

Motorola kinda ruined the benefits of the IPS in the Droid by having such a large gap between the gorilla glass capacitive panel and the IPS LCD.  You can’t’ appreciate the nice viewing angles IPS gives you because the screen is too recessed from the glass for you to see it well from an angle.

          • Anonymous

As posted below, Dr. Soneira of Displaymate stated the Droid had an IPS display after doing a full review and teardown.  He knows more about displays than any of us could ever dream, so if he says it’s an IPS, I believe it.

            quoted from his website:
“Motorola Droid: In Plane Switching IPS LCD

Excellent 3.7 inch 16:9 Aspect Ratio display with a native resolution of 854 x 480.

Very accurate colors and intensity scales are very close to a calibrated studio monitor.”

        • djjsin

i have a droid x.  i went down to verizon the other day to get a rezound or razr as well, and then return it so i can get a nexus.  I played with the razr in the store and just couldnt stand the blur or the shape and feel of it.  the screen also looked like ass compared to the rezound.  So i got the rezound.  Though i though it was decent, wasnt as thick feeling as i expected..but i hated the htc sense, and the battery life was atrocious.  I couldnt even drive from los angeles to vegas while streaming the iheartradio and using the gps, with the screen on the lowest setting, WHILE THE DEVICE WAS PLUGGED IN.

So i returned it, and what happened next is a story for another time….i’m giving up alot of things for the galaxy nexus (sd card/no usb mass storage…some of the same reasons i stayed away getting the iphone)…i just want them to give something concrete, its getting a bit rediculous.  here we are at the end of november and still no concrete date…while its released in other countries.

            98.7 FTW!

      • Anonymous

It’s not just the pixel density either, the DROID has an excellent looking LCD screen.

        • Anonymous

but the droid it is small that is why it looks good. A small display with a lot of resolution. The iphone has the best display but at 3.5 not good enough.

          • Anonymous

Nope, the Droid’s display is better than the iPhone’s.  PPI isn’t everything and the Droid’s LCD has better color accuracy and contrast.  You can’t even notice the difference in PPI between the two.

          • Anonymous

So the best display ever made is between the droid and the rezound. Have you seem the one in the razr? How do you like it?

          • Anonymous

The Razr’s display could be better, having said that, it’s pretty damn good.  In my opinion.

          • Anonymous

I know, but moto will make it better. Look at moto new software, it dethroned sense and touchwiz.

I’ve looked at an iPhone 4 next to my Droid and you’re right the DPI difference is minimal.  The thing that makes the iPhone look better to my eyes is that there’s no gap between the LCD and the glass.

err…no,  the iPhone has a better display.  I am an OG Droid owner, and when I look at an iPhone 4, it’s like looking at the future.  But that’s ok, cause the OG Droid has a great display in its own right.

          • Anonymous

Why because the iphone has a pretty UI? Don’t confuse the two.

            http://www.displaymate.com/Motorola_Droid_ShootOut.htm

Like I said, the Droid’s display actually has more accurate colors than the iphone’s.

I remember comparing the OG Droid to the BB Bold when we first were deciding what phones to get in our office.  Needless to say the screen alone was reason enough to get the OGD.

Verizon Guys really wanted us to get the Blackberries at that time.  Now that our contracts are up they really want us to get the Bionic or the RAZR as soon as possible.

    • http://www.facebook.com/TJHRULZ tjhrulz

The OG droid should just be in every comparison by default

      • http://twitter.com/LiveInTheDream litd

My OG Droid is staying with me forever. I can’t sell such a device. It’s part of history! (and still my current phone)

        • OG Droid

I turned mine into a mp3 player with google music; its like it has been reborn.

          • James Friedman

Might have to do that myself…although right now the wait for the GN is making me think evil thoughts about destroying my once prized possession. Maybe there is hope for the OG

    • Eric Kwan

Or the iPhone 4S screen, since—let’s be honest—that’s the phone people will be comparing these against.

I’ll take a SAMOLED display over anything out threre.
      – sent from my sensation 4g-

      • Deewc74

Yeah I thought so too until I saw it on the Razr. The 720 on the rezound is clean

        • Zeadaplaya

          Razr is only AMOLED.

          • Anonymous

            Nope, it’s SAMOLED

          • Anonymous

Technically it’s Super AMOLED – Advanced, which is a SAMOLED display and layout with SAMOLED Plus’ power consumption.

        • Anonymous

The Rezound screen is gorgeous, BUT, you just can’t beat the 100,000:1 contrast ration of SAMOLEDs. Even if you rewatch the above video on the black parts, the rezound looks like a light bulb covered in black construction paper to the other 2. On it’s own, you may not notice, but next to the others you do.

Once Samsung finishes merging SAMOLEDs Plus technology with HD next year, everyone else will be a very distant second.

  • nexus? :(

wow…. the hd-lcd rezound blows these pentile amoleds away…

    • Anonymous

I really thought that the Rezound looked dull and drab next to the pure blacks of the sAMOLEDs, both in the above video and in person. The only place where the SLCD seems to shine is in macro shots. Just an opinion.

      • Anonymous

Resolution is king!  Better color and contrast doesn’t matter.

        /s

      • Darat532

The worse thing about the rezound is that it really lags. I tried this phone out and the Razr was faster and smoother than the Rezound. I really feel that Motoblur is the best skin on the devices right now just narrowly beating out Touchwiz. I absolutely hate HTC sense it is very intrusive and it really lags your phone down.

        • Deewc74

Sense Sux but so far it has smoked the razor in quality.I had the razr returned it due to batt life and the screen looked great but the pixel problem became increasingly noticable. The screen on the Rezound is awesome I just wish it was backed by samoled.Butt the batt life smokes the razr

        • Anonymous

I have been saying that all along, but these fools do not listen to me. Moto has made the best software right now. We just have to see how good is ICS. The faster device right now are the two best devices on the planet. The razr and GS2.

go see them in person, you’ll change your mind even with the SAMOLED Plus

  • EC8CH

For all the complaining that went on regarding the size of the G-Nex due to its 4.6″ screen, it’s size is almost indistinguishable from the RAZR and Rezound in this post’s picture.

    • Jorge

I’m pretty sure there were complaints that all three phones were big (ie. larger bezels than my Thunderbrick).

      • EC8CH

Yes there were, but I think the G-Nex was singled out even more because it’s screen was even bigger (and probably because it is a Nexus device).  From what I’ve experienced with holding a RAZR, I think all three look like a decent size for people who are looking for a larger screen.  None of them seem too large.

        • Alan

Nah, that’s just you remembering the negative posts about the Nexus more.

          • EC8CH

That could be, but people mocked the RAZR as being too large and then made the G-Nex sound ridiculous for having even a larger screen.

Bottom line, most people aren’t going to notice that the RAZR is a bit wider or that the G-Nex is a bit longer.  If their are looking for a larger phone they’ll probably be equally happy with the size of either.

          • Anonymous

Exactly, some of us have been saying this from the beginning.

          • EC8CH

this photo demonstrates this very clearly

          • Anonymous

Holding the RAZR it just didn’t feel good in my hand. I think the thin edges had a lot to do with that. The Rezound felt great and I am hoping the GNex will too.

          • cpug5150

Put a case on it, that’ll thinken it up and do that with the Rezound and it’ll surely be a brick.

          • Anonymous

People were mocking the Razr’s width as well even though it’s a difference of 1 mm.

          • http://twitter.com/gleamingcubes danny damore

The reason the screen is the same size in the photo above is because the “buttons” are visible on the Galaxy Nexus.  When they are not in use the entire screen is used for things like video as you can see in the video playback.  I “think” that when the buttons are lit up on the Nexus it forms to a 4.3 inch screen.

          • GC736

I believe EC8CH was referencing the size of the phone as a whole, not the screen size. The disappearing buttons are the reason for the lack of overall size difference.

          • Anonymous

The only thing that messed up the nexus was that it was made by samsung. My best features are call quality and radios and samsung is lacking those. ICS is the best, i just wish moto would of made the nexus :)

          • Anonymous

            I am with you there.

          • Anonymous

:) I feel moto now has the best software. They improved it, why samsung can’t improve their radios and gps problems? The next moto device will have the best display and camera, you will see.

          • Guest

looks like you have a new friend that you can slurp his cum up.

          • Guest

            ….

    • Jikhead

Yep, that extra .25″ in screen real estate is in the new on-screen buttons.  The screen will technically be the same as a 4.3″ all the time except when watching videos and the on-screen buttons go away.

  • Eh

So, pretty much in real world use, it doesn’t really matter. What I do care about, though, is which uses less battery.

    • Eh

Hmmm, I’m going to guess and say battery life difference isn’t that noticeable in real life either.

      • Jason

Despite all the technical stuff people are just copying and pasting here, in the end it doesn’t really make much difference. The video/photo quality, smudges and scratches on your screen or protector matters a whole lot more.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Battery life shouldn’t be that much different between the 3.

      • Anonymous

Kellex, so tomorrow will be 1 week from the 8th, if we don’t see the pre-order, ya thinking we’ll cruise past that release rumor as well?  Just curious.

        • Up2bKrzy

99.9% chance you will NOT see anything for preOrders tomorrow. Last conversation I had on it was the device WILL NOT  come anytime before the wk of 12/12 and that is a given. PreOrders may start before that but they will not be in stores or ship prior to 12/12.  There is just to much bad info on the web about the Nexus which is why everyone is so up in arms over it. If people would have listened 6+wks ago to some of the ACTUAL GOOD info around no one would be upset about the release date at this point.

      • Hotsawce69

It will be when you throw extended batteries in the mix….Razr = not an option, Gnex = third party if it is available at all and Rezound = phone is already a brick…..so what’s a girl to do?????

I really like this article, it has some useful and informative data. However, I have been refreshing this site every 10 minutes for the past two days and when I see the word “Galaxy Nexus,” I get a bit disappointed when it’s not followed by “available for Pre-order.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/japultra Jason Nguyen

Looking like the Rezounds LCD screen is besting the SAMOLED. Oh, well. I’m still getting the Nexus.

    • Anonymous

remember rezound has a higher ppi so of course it will look better

      • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Chris Gustafson

The Rezound is also RGB stripe, not PenTile RG-BG like the Galaxy Nexus. Still you shouldn’t be able to notice too big of a difference between the two, the G-Nex should also have better color.

      • Anonymous

I’ll take a SAMOLED display over any other screen out there.

    • EC8CH

no doubt if getting the absolute best quality display is your goal, then you need to seriously consider the Rezound.

      • Anonymous

No sAMOLED< no sale. Just my opinion, but I prefer a great contrast all the time to less pixelation in a macro shot. Of course, this is the beauty of Android: choice.

        • EC8CH

my wife got a DInc before they switched to the LCD screen. The images do seem to pop off the screen more than on my OGD.  I guess it depends on what you value more, contrast ratio or color accuracy.

          • Anonymous

OLED panels can be color calibrated for accurate colors just like LCDs, they have a much wider color gamut than LCDs as well.

          • EC8CH

most ppl aren’t calibrating their phone displays though and the OLED screens I’ve seen look a bit over saturated.

Just Kidding but seriously these are all great phones.. Personally, screen is not the determining factor for my decisions in smart phones. Too many times have I seen a phone with a great screen but still lags or no lag but a less than stellar screen. I just  got ICS and some Gala Nexus in my hand…

  • Bryan Paul

Ugh, the Rezound’s screen definitely  begs me to pick it up to play with it. Even if it does cost me the restocking fee when the nexus comes out…
